Editor’s Letter Welcome to Turnaround’s April 2017 buyer’s notes! The spring publishing season is in full swing, and we have a bevy of phenomenal titles to fill your shelves. Here are some of our favourites this month: Kicking things off this month is the remarkable account of a woman who rises to power in 17th century Sicily, bringing about sweeping changes before being cast out in a coup after only 27 days – one cycle of the moon. Revolution of the Moon (p. 5; Europa Editions, 9781609453916, p/b, £10.99) begins on the deathbed of Charles III’s viceroy, the marquis of Castle Rodrigo, who names his wife as his successor. Eleanora de Moura is highly intelligent and capable, applying her political acumen to help those afflicted by poverty – lowering the price of bread, reducing taxes for large families, opening women’s care facilities. But her measures were considered seditious by the Church and men in power, who saw her as a dangerous revolutionary and recalled her to Spain. Based on a true story, Camilleri’s gripping novel tells the story of a woman whose courage and political vision is tested at every step by misogyny and reactionary conservatism. Another remarkable story, this time a graphic novel, is A Thousand Coloured Castles (p. 16; Myriad Editions, 9780993563300, p/b, £16.99). This follow-up to author Gareth Brookes’ The Black Project (Myriad, 2013, also available from Turnaround) once again twitches the net curtains as the sleepy suburbs of southern England melt into a world of hallucination, taking the reader through the doors of perception into a life where the surreal co-exists with the banal. Brookes has been widely praised by the likes of Paul Gravett, who called The Black Project “Exquisite, excruciating and exceptional. A landmark.” and by Herald, who say Brookes’s work is “Like Cath Kidston embroidering for David Lynch.” Part of the growing genre of Graphic Medicine titles, A Thousand Colored Castles is set to become a vital resource for patients living with and health practitioners treating Charles Bonnet syndrome, the experience of complex visual hallucinations. Moving into non-fiction, we have Pulitzer Prize-finalist George David Haskell’s The Songs of Trees (p. 33; Viking Press USA, 9780525427520, h/b, £22.99). David Haskell’s awardwinning The Forest Unseen (Penguin, 2013) won acclaim for eloquent writing and deep engagement with the natural world. Now, Haskell brings his powers of observation to the biological networks that surround all species: trees. Haskell repeatedly visits a dozen trees around the world, exploring the trees’ connections with webs of fungi, bacterial communities, cooperative and destructive animals, and other plants. This stunning and accessible piece of nature writing will show that every living being is not only sustained by biological connections, but is made from these relationships. When we listen to trees, nature’s great connectors, we learn how to inhabit the relationships that give life its source, substance, and beauty.
It’s not just trees that connect us, of course. Signal Failure (p. 34; Influx Press, 9781910312148, p/b, £9.99) explores the proposed route of highspeed train line HS2. Tom Jeffreys set off from Euston Station with the aim to walk the 119 miles from London to Birmingham along the proposed route of HS2. (He failed.) Over the course of ten days of walking, Jeffreys moves from a rapidly changing London, through interminable suburbia, and out into the English countryside, meeting conservationists and museum directors, fiery farmers and suicidal retirees. Signal Failure weaves together poetry and politics, history, philosophy and personal observation to form an extended exploration of people and place, nature, society, and the future. It offers a critique of humanity’s most urgent failures: of capitalism, of community, of the city and the suburbs, of architecture and agriculture, of bureaucratic democracy, and, in the end, of our ageold failure to find our place in the world we live in. Last but surely not least, we have the 10th and final book in Dedalus’ Eça de Queirós project: The Illustrious House of Ramires (p. 35; Dedalus, 9781910213391, p/b, £9.99). First published in 1900, the year of Eça de Queirós’s death, the book portrays Gonçalo Mendes Ramires, the latest member of an aristocratic family that predates even the kings of Portugal. Compared to Tolstoy, Dickens, Flaubert and Balzac, Eça de Queirós is considered to be Portugal’s greatest novelist. This brings all of his greatest works into print in English, thanks to translation by the multi-award-winning translator Margaret Jull Costa, recipient of an OBE for services to translation.
Don’t Miss… My Favourite London Devils By Iain Sinclair (with illustrations by Dave McKean) A delirious gathering of some of the writers, living and dead, who haunt Iain Sinclair and who inform his own books. Published by Tangerine Press on 17 November 2016 9781910691175 p/b £10

PACIFISM AS PATHOLOGY Reflections on the Role of Armed Struggle in North America, third edition Churchill, Ward; Ryan, Michael; Mead, Ed & Rodriguez, Dylan
Pacifism as Pathology is a dissident classic. Originally written during the ‘80s, the seminal essay ‘Pacifism as Pathology’ was prompted by Ward Churchill’s frustration with what he diagnosed as a growing - and deliberately self-neutralising - ‘hegemony of nonviolence’ on the North American left. The essay’s publication unleashed a raging debate among activists in both the US and Canada, a significant result of which was Michael Ryan’s penning of an essay reinforcing Churchill’s premise that nonviolence, at least as the term is popularly employed by white ‘progressives,’ is counterrevolutionary. KEY SELLING POINTS • Third edition of a dissident classic. • Challenges the movement’s victories: Gandhi, 1960s antiwar, MLK Jr’s civil rights movement. • As relevant today as ever, and with a new introduction and preface to provide context. LAND WITHOUT BORDERS, A My Journey Around East Jerusalem and the West Bank Baram, Nir
