Editor’s Letter Hello and welcome to Turnaround’s July buyer’s notes. The year is halfway through and we’ve still got so many great books to go… so let’s get cracking! Ploughing straight in with some marvellous fiction, perfect whether you’re home or away this month. Beginning with The End (p5; Restless Books, 9781632061218, p/b, £9.99), a bracing and enthralling debut from Brazilian film star, Fernanda Torres, about a group of five ageing male friends, as they look back on their glory days of hedonism in Rio’s Copacabana, and tackle the hilariously grim realities of getting old. Anybody longing for something with more of a chill this summer should look no further than Helen Lewis’s The House With Old Furniture (p4; Honno, 9781909983663, p/b, £8.99). A beautifully wrought novel about grief and letting go, which confronts many topical issues through its dual time frame and genre fusion, it tells the story of Evie and her family’s move to West Wales after the death of her eldest son. Crime devotees can venture to Rome without ever leaving their armchairs courtesy of the spectacular Suburra (p6; Europa, 9781609454074, p/b, £12.99) by Carlo Bonini. Shortly to become a Netflix Original series, read it now to get ahead of the curve! Problems plaguing the political system of contemporary Italy are played out, within the context of urban development, against the florid and cinematic background of glorious Rome. For a more fantastical journey, you might like to take a/The Hike (p6; Penguin Books, 9780399563874, p/b, £11.99) by Drew Magary. This is a fantasy saga unlike any you’ve read before, weaving elements of folk tales and video games into a riveting, unforgettable adventure of what a man will endure to return to his family. At once bitingly funny and emotionally absorbing this novel is a remarkable milestone in contemporary fantasy.

Amping up for a summer of graphic novels? It would be remiss not to mention the final volume of Margaret Atwood’s remarkable Angel Catbird 3 (p11; Dark Horse, 9781506701707, h/b, £12.50). The cat-centric adventure concludes with a fight to save the world from the evil rat army. Or you might fancy (and we wouldn’t blame you!) the sultry Maria M (p13; Fantagraphics, 9781683960164, h/b, £24.99), from the renowned Gilbert Hernandez. Maria M. is the mother of Luba from Love and Rockets, and this noir-esque thriller presents her darkly evocative back-story.

Homer’s Daughter (p21; Seven Stories, 9781609807733, p/b, £10.99) is an ideal summer read for literary teens looking for an alternative take on one of the cornerstones of classical literature. Originally published in 1955, Homer’s Daughter is a beautifully written novel stemming from an idea that Homer’s Odyssey was in fact written by Nausicaa, the daughter of a Greek King. If you’re hankering for some non-fiction we suggest a visit to Australia’s murky criminal past with the stunning Convict Tattoos (p23; Text Publishing, 9781925240399, h/b, £23.99). Simon Barnard’s fascinating study combines history and tattoo art in a unique and vividly illustrated volume. We also highly recommend Draw Your Weapons (p24; Text Publishing, 9781911231141, p/b, £12.99). Sarah Sentilles’ combination of essay, memoir, reportage, literature and history asks how should one live in the face of war and violence, of drone strikes, human frailty and so much suffering? In a flowing narrative, sometimes personal, sometimes philosophical, always provocative, she suggests that art offers us a language for making sense of what we see. Finally Hold Tight (p; Influx, 9781910312254, p/b, £9.99)! An enthralling exploration of black masculinity and the Grime music scene. Insightful, very funny and stacked with sentences you’ll want to pull up and read again, Jeffrey Boakya rolls deep, giving a context to Grime that hasn’t been given before.

IMMORTAL HOUNDS 5

WOLFSMUND VOLUME 8

In an alternate world everyone is an immortal. There are no doctors or hospitals. Cemeteries are things of the past; some consider them to be legends or myths. But with immortality comes consequences, like the loss of some of humanity’s greatest gifts... including love. There are those who understand that and choose to die for the ability to experience such emotions again... But the government is determined to eradicate those who take that path.

The debut series from Mitsuhisa Kuji, who earned her stripes working with Kentaro Miura and Kaoru Mori. The tale of William Tell has never been rendered so beautifully as Mitsuhisa Kuji’s stunning debut work, Wolfsmund. The series is set in 14th Century Switzerland, as the Swiss begin to initiate their movements toward independence, heading towards a fortress in the Alps known as the Wolfsmund. They continue to strike fear amongst the German and Italian communities that dare to threaten Hapsburg rule.

GUERILLAS OF DESIRE Notes on Everyday Resistance and Organizing to Make a Revolution Possible Van Meter, Kevin

Guerrillas of Desire offers a contentious assertion: the fundamental assumption underlying Left and radical organising, including many strains of anarchism, is wrong. Historical and current strategies on the Left and in radical movements are predicated on the assumption that working class and poor peoples are unorganised and not resisting. Guerrillas of Desire maps these underground forces, showing how the left might learn from them. A BEAUTIFUL, TERRIBLE THING

How the Scandinavians Got It Right-and How We Can, Too Lakey, George

A Memoir of Marriage and Betrayal Waite, Jen

Liberals worldwide invoke Scandinavia as a promised land of equality, while most conservatives fear it as a hotbed of liberty-threatening socialism. But the left and right can usually agree on one thing: that the Nordic system is impossible to replicate elsewhere. The US and UK are too big, or too individualistic, or too... something. In Viking Economics, George Lakey dispels these myths. He explores the inner-workings of the Nordic economies that boast the world’s happiest, most productive workers, and explains how we, too, can embrace equality in our economic policy. KEY SELLING POINTS • A fun book on economics that is left-wing but utterly sensible! • Lakey shows us that there’s nothing inherently Scandinavian about reducing inequality - and that we should dream big! • Economic inequality is one of the most pressing issues of our time, thus many will be interested in this book. • Likewise, interest in Scandinavia is at an all-time high, with more people adopting elements of the Nordic lifestyle.
