Editor’s Letter Remember, remember our books for November! You’ll have no trouble recollecting our fantastic titles for this month – we have many treats in store… In fiction there are some seriously incredible works coming out of the US at the moment. Ross Simonini’s The Book of Formation (p4; Melville House, 9781612196688, p/b, £14.99) is a speculative look at the culture of self-improvement. This novel-ininterviews follows the rise and fall of a controversial figure we can all recognize. UnAmerican Activities (p4; Dodo Ink, 9780993575853, p/b, £8.99) by James Miller is a series of interlinked short stories, making up a timely and razor-sharp satire of American culture in the age of Trump.

Turning to crime and, at long last, here is the final instalment of Ragnar Jonasson’s Dark Iceland series, Whiteout (p6; Orenda, 9781910633892, p/b, £8.99). Dark, chilling and complex, Whiteout is a haunting, atmospheric and stunningly plotted thriller from one of Iceland’s bestselling crime writers. And over in science fiction we have the spectacular Unkindness of Ghosts (p7; Akashic Books, 9781617755880, p/b, £11.99) from Rivers Solomon. A truly phenomenal, breathtaking debut SF novel of the highest order, which tackles race and discrimination aboard the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organised much like the antebellum South. If you’re graphically inclined then look no further: Best Wishes (p12; Dark Horse, 9781506703749, h/b, £16.99) is a Woody Allen-esque indie love story of New York, full of heartache and clever humour. Or else give I Am Not Okay With This (p14; Fantagraphics, 9781683960621, p/b, £12.99) by Charles Forsman – a graphic novel about sexual repression and super powers in small-town America – a try!

Over in kids Mokomaki (p22; Pow! 9781576878057, h/b, £12.99) is a beautiful picture book featuring (you guessed it) the Mokomakis, a group of little birds who flit playfully through the pages while teaching the basics of numeracy. Likewise, for older kids looking for education through entertainment, send Saving Hamlet (p23; Disney-Hyperion, 9781484743782, p/b, £8.99) their way. A high school student falls through the stage trapdoor into Elizabethan England, in this fantastic, funny, sweet contemporary/Elizabethan debut by Molly Booth, which reads like Rainbow Rowell’s Landline meets Shakespeare in Love. In non-fiction we have the crèmede-la-crème of literary memoirs. Tinderbox (p27; Galley Beggar, 9781910296820, p/b, £9.99) by Megan Dunn looks at the place of literature in the world through the eyes of a former Borders bookseller (as the company crumbles) filtered through the lens of Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451. Meanwhile Horse Latitudes (p28; Tangerine Press, 9781910691229, p/b, £9.00) is Chris Wilson’s brave and compelling autobiography of his early years and descent into drug use – which led to criminality, prostitution, prison and psychiatric internment – written in his characteristically stark and uncompromising prose.

Although not vegetarian myself I cannot wait for Naturally Vegetarian (p31; Avery, 9781101983591, h/b, £29.99) – an Italian cookbook focusing on the use of seasonal vegetables to make gorgeous family-style Italian feasts. Replete with stunning photographs by the author – who is also an award-winning photographer. Last, but by absolutely no means least, we have the mesmerising Brollilogy (p25; Melville House, 9781911545071, h/b, £12.99). Marion Rankine looks at umbrellas throughout literature, art and history in this wonderfully quirky and beautifully designed book. Have a wonderful month. Tune in next time for DECEMBER!

A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG WOMAN Lopez, Julian & Rutter, Samuel

As political violence escalates around them, a young boy and his single mother live together in an apartment in Buenos Aires - which has recently been taken over by Argentina’s military dictatorship. When the boy returns home one day to find his mother missing, the story fractures, and the reader encounters him fully grown, consumed by the burden of his loss, attempting to reconstruct the memory of his mother. By leaping forward in time, the boy - now a man - subtly gives shape to his mother’s activism, and in the process recasts the memories from his childhood. KEY SELLING POINTS • The English-language debut of one of Argentina’s most promising writers. • Set during and in the aftermath of Argentina’s infamous military dictatorship, little explored in fiction. • A fascinating setting; the dictatorship disappeared more than 30,000 people in the 1970s and early 1980s. • While there are many first-hand accounts of this era, this marks the arrival of collective memory through fiction. • Despite the novel’s political scaffolding, this is a very moving story about a boy coping with the loss of his mother. BATTLE OF CHURUBUSCO, THE American Rebels in the Mexcian-American War Ferraris, Andrea

Crepax, Guido

In the 1960s and ‘70s, Crepax created and chronicled the adventures of Valentina, arguably the strongest and most independent female character in European comics up to that time, and legitimised the erotic genre. KEY SELLING POINTS • Italian cartoonist Crepax is one of the most internationally acclaimed in the world. • Crepax’s work is stylish and French New Wave-influenced. • There is a dearth of literary erotica in the American graphic novel market. FAB 4 MANIA

Today, Churubusco is a residential suburb of Mexico City. In 1847, it was the stronghold of the San Patricios, a motley battalion of soldiers who deserted the United States Army for a just cause. In this graphic novel, Ferraris uses a bold charcoal technique to tell their story through the eyes of Gaetano Rizzo (based on a real U.S. soldier). A 22-year-old Sicilian immigrant, he joins the U.S. Army, who has promised him citizenship if he will fight to take California away from Mexico. Soon, he sees the cruelty he is being ordered to inflict is no different from what he had escaped. KEY SELLING POINTS • The relationship between Mexico and the U.S. continues to be very much in the news. • Much more in depth than the average history class - the narrative is based on a true story. • Stories about conflicted human beings questioning the wars they are forced into have universal appeal. • Has YA crossover potential: Gaetano’s story is almost coming-of-age as he grapples with the consequences of his actions. • This is Andrea Ferraris’s U.S. graphic novel debut and marks the introduction of a powerful new voice in comics. Tyler, Carol

Critically acclaimed cartoonist Carol Tyler recreates the exhilaration and excitement of Beatlemania at its height in 1965, her personal obsession with the Beatles, and her odyssey that leads her to the famous Beatles Chicago concert later that year. Sydney seems like a normal 15-year-old freshman but she also has a few secrets she’s only shared in her diary. Like how she’s in love with her best friend Dina, the bizarreness of her father’s death, and those painful telekinetic powers that keep popping up at the most inopportune times. In this collection of the self-published minicomic series, Forsman expertly channels the teenage ethos in a style that evokes classic comic strips while telling a powerful story about the intense, and sometimes violent, tug of war between trauma and control. History

BOHEMIAN LONDON From Thomas De Quincey to Jeffrey Bernard Rennison, Nick

FRIENDSHIPS Girouard, Mark

Mark Girouard selects and reproduces 29 letters, ranging from his early childhood during the war to recent years, and uses them to memorialise their diverse authors. In the process a selective autobiography emerges as he discusses his relationship with the diverse crowd, painting a riveting picture of Bohemian cultural life in postwar Britain and Ireland. WATERMELONS, NOOSES, AND STRAIGHT RAZORS Stories from the Jim Crow Museum Pilgrim, David & Irving, Debby

All groups tell stories, but some groups have the power to impose their stories on others, to label others, stigmatise others, paint others as undesirables - and to have these stories presented as scientific fact, God’s will, or wholesome entertainment. Here readers will find representations of the lazy, childlike Sambo, the watermelon-obsessed pickaninny, the buffoonish minstrel, the subhuman savage, the loyal and contented mammy and Tom, and the menacing, razor-toting coon and brute. With a diverse collection of essays, Rebellious Mourning shows that we can bear almost anything when it’s worked through collectively, because when we publicly share loss and pain, we lessen what debilitates us. Grief is, of course, universal, but - with unprecedented numbers of people made refugees, rapidly increasing effects of global warming, and the electoral rise of authoritarianism across much of the world - we are in a historical moment where many, especially on the left, are feeling a profound sense of loss.
