Editor’s Letter Hello hello… and welcome to a whole new year of books! That’s right, it’s now 2018, and we’re getting the year off to a phenomenal start. Getting the show on the road for the new year is Heartland (p4, Restless Books, 9781632061508, p/b, £12.99) – an uproarious story of a thwarted writer’s elaborate revenge on the woman who stole her lover, blending elements of telenovela, pulp noir, and dystopian satire. I actually can’t wait.

There’s also the fascinating Athenian Women (p4, Europa Editions, 9781609454197, p/b, £11.99), set in 411 BC Athens: a powerful vision of class struggle, the subjugation of women, and the courage needed to change the course of history. Hydra (p6, Orenda, 9781910633977, p/b, £8.99) is the prequel to last year’s brilliant Seven Stories by Matt Wesolowski, which spins the Serial podcast format to gripping effect. This instalment sees show presenter and journalist Scott King investigate the Macleod Massacre, in which a young

Kids Like Us (p19, Text Publishing, 9781925498912, p/b, £6.99) is a YA book about autism, Proust, and young love. It’s a heartwarming and original story about acceptance, falling in love for the first time and learning that the line between reality and imagination does not have to be fixed. Meanwhile Pocket Pups (p18, Powerhouse Books, 9781576878538, p/b, £7.99), will keep kids (and adults!) entertained for hours, creating fun, travel-sized puppies with no need for glue, scissors or tape. Moving to a non-fictional finale, we have three incredible titles with which to see in the New Year. Bordered Lives: How Europe Fails Refugees and Migrants (p24, New Internationalist, 9781780264387, p/b, £9.99) is a landmark book, by awardwinning journalist Hsaio-Hung Pai, on the reporting of Europe’s migrant crisis – and a cry from the heart about an asylum system that is simply not fit for purpose. Spinning Magnet (p25, Dutton, 9781101985168, h/b, £17.99) is a captivating history of the science of electromagnetism, right up to the latest indications that the poles are soon to reverse and destroy the world’s power grids and electronic communications… eek!

woman bludgeoned her own family to death. Or else take a passage to India with The Widows of Malabar Hill (p6, Soho Press, 9781616957780, h/b, £18.99) which introduces an extraordinary, and historically based, female lawyer-sleuth in a new series set in 1920s Bombay! New in graphic novels – one of the oldest works of literature: The Epic of Gilgamesh (p13, Seven Stories Press, 9781609807931, p/b, £15.99). The first in a new range of long-form adaptations from Seven Stories’s Graphic Canon series, this adaptation makes use of the most complete and up-to-date version of the epic. A classic of a different kind, What I Did (p13, Fantagraphics, 9781606994146, h/b, £21.99) bring together three of the legendary Jason’s most acclaimed 1990s graphic novels, finally back in print in this definitive omnibus!

And last, but by no means least, True Stories: Complete Short Non-Fiction by Helen Garner (p,23 9781925498875, h/b, £25) is an 800-page hardback beauty, which brings together Garner’s internationally renowned essays, stories and diary entries of True Stories, The Feel of Steel and Everywhere I Look, as well as later work. A very happy new year to you all; we look forward to filling it with the best books in town!

The Infinite Future is a mindbending novel that melds two page-turning books in one. The first tells the story of an obsessive librarian, a down-at-heel author, and a Mormon historian who go on the hunt for a mystical, life-changing book - and find it. In the second half, Wirkus gives us the lost masterpiece itself. The two halves connect in surprising and delightful ways to form a totally unique reading experience. Part academic satire, part sciencefiction, and part book-lover’s quest, this wholly original novel captures the heady way that stories inform and mirror our lives.

DEAD EYE AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA, THE The World of Slavery at Sea - A Graphic Memoir Vannak, Prum; Pederick, Ben & Pederick, Jocelyn

Too poor to pay his pregnant wife’s hospital bill, Prum Vannak left his village in Cambodia to seek work in Thailand. Men who appeared to be employers on a fishing vessel promised to return him home after a few months at sea, but instead Vannak was held hostage on the vessel for four years of hard labour. CAUSE And How it Doesn’t Always Equal Effect Smithsimon, Gregory

THE LINUX COMMAND LINE

Forbidden LEGO introduces you to the type of freestyle building that LEGO’s master builders do for fun in the back room. Using LEGO bricks in combination with common household materials (from rubber bands and glue to plastic spoons and ping-pong balls) along with some very unorthodox building techniques, you’ll learn to create working models that LEGO would never endorse.

Travel through the history of architecture in The LEGO Architect. You’ll learn about styles like Art Deco, Modernism, and High-Tech, and find inspiration in galleries of LEGO models. Then take your turn building 12 models in a variety of styles. Snap together some bricks and learn architecture the fun way!

You’ve experienced the shiny, point-and-click surface of your Linux computer—now dive below and explore its depths with the power of the command line. The Linux Command Line takes you from your very first terminal keystrokes to writing full programs in Bash, the most popular Linux shell.
