EDITOR’S LETTER Roll up, roll up! It’s June and we’re starting summer in a grand style with some seriously wonderful books – of all shapes, sizes and varieties. In fiction Lucia (p5, Galley Beggar Press, 9781910296882, p/b, £9.99), by Alex Pheby, is a deep and dark meditation on the life of James Joyce’s daughter, Lucia. Little is known about her, as after her death her letters were burned – this novel bravely and dramatically reimagines her, whilst questioning what it means to recreate a life. We are also delighted to be bringing you the first novel to be translated into English by award-winning German author Mareike Krugel, Look at Me (p6, Text Publishing, 9781925603354, p/b, £10.99) – a finely nuanced and disarmingly funny novel about a woman who has lost sight of who she once was. Short story fans will delight in a new collection from Influx Press, by Clare Fisher How the Light Gets

In (p7, Influx Press, 9781910312124, p/b, £9.99). From buffering Skype chats and the truth about beards, to fried chicken shops and the things smartphones make you less likely to do when alone in a public place, Fisher paints a complex, funny and moving portrait of contemporary British life. Over in crime fiction and we are supremely excited for the new novel in Gunnar Staalesen’s Varg Veum series, Big Sister (p8, Orenda, 9781912374199, p/b, £8.99). Veum is approached to find a missing girl, by a half-sister he barely knew, and his investigation takes him deep into the dark web, and some personal history he’d rather forget... Also be sure to watch out for Gangster Nation (p8, No Exit Press, 9780857302144, p/b, £8.99) by Tod Goldberg. A page-turning examination of the seedy foundations of American life tracing how the things we value most in our lives – home, health, even our spiritual lives – have been built on the enterprises of criminals.

Meanwhile in graphic novels, treats abound! The Great North Wood (p13, Avery Hill, 9781910395363, p/b, £9.99), tells stories – by bandits, outlaws and gypsies – of the ancient forest that used to cover much of southern England and

now exists only in pockets of South-East London. Another epic London comic: Jenny Finn (p14, Dark Horse, 9781506705446, h/b, £14.99), from legends Mike Mignola, Dave Stewart and Troy Nixey, is a fantastic collection of Victorian-era horror.

In Children’s non-fiction we are all about Getting Things Done For Teens (p22, Penguin Books, 9780143131939, p/b, £13.99) – a howto manual for the next generation and a strategic guidebook for optimising the conditions for a fruitful and effective future. And, let me be the first to introduce you to the next craze… Tentacle Kitty! Tentacle Kitty Coloring Book (p23, Dark Horse, 9781506706993, p/b, £12.99) by husband and wife team John and Raena Merritt is sure to sweep up a whole host of new fans for the adorable alien kitty with tentacles.

And, always last but never least, onwards to non-fiction! Strange Stars (p25, Melville House, 9781612196978, h/b, £22), is an absolutely mega book, exploring the influence that science fiction has had on popular music, particularly on David Bowie and the heady, experimental 1970s scene. We also have Snooze (p26, Text Publishing, 9781925498585, p/b, £12.99) a revised edition of the entertaining and enlightening The Lost Art of Sleep (2009), taking readers on a journey through the knowledge of the great Western thinkers, their fascinations and views on sleep, wakefulness and dreams. And we end the month with The Immigrant Cookbook (p29, New Internationalist, 9781780264585, h/b, £20), a beautifully illustrated and invaluable book of recipes by immigrant chefs from around the world – with a percentage of each sale going to charity. And just like that the year is already half way through! Read up if you know what’s good for you!

MOBILE CHURCHES Laub, Anton Roland

Bucharest in the 1980s. Ceausescu’s ‘systematisation’ programme is in full swing in the Romanian capital: onethird of the historic centre has been wiped out to make way for imposing buildings and wide avenues intended to honour the regime. Despite Ceausescu’s particularly dogged approach towards the churches, seven are spared and undergo a process as incredible as it is absurd: they are lifted and placed on rails then moved and hidden behind housing blocks. Withdrawn from the cityscape, they live secret lives interpolated in the disparate architecture that shapes Bucharest’s urban landscape today. KEY SELLING POINTS • Shortlisted for several prizes including the the Unseen Dummy Award, Unseen, Amsterdam 2017. • Accompanies exhibitions in Paris (November 2017) and Berlin (Spring 2018). • A unique visual exploration of a dramatic and absurd chapter of Romania’s recent history.
