Getting things underway we have the beguilingly titled In This Skull Hotel Where I Never Sleep (p4; Broken Dimanche, 9783943196627, p/b, £10). A fascinating study in authorship by up-and-coming Irish author Rob Doyle – the ‘editor’ of this final collection of work by Berlin scenester, and fellow Irish writer Killian Turner, who apparently disappeared in 1985. Meanwhile Queer Africa (p6; New Internationalist, 9781780264639, p/b, £8.99) is a collection of unapologetic,

Lettuce the Rabbit and Vern the Sheep: Vern and Lettuce (p21; Bog Eyed Books, 9780995555372, p/b, £8.99). YA gets truly dark in #Murdertrending (p22; Freeform, 9781368010023, h/b, £14.99) – set in a dystopian future where a new form of entertainment has been created: viewing the execution of convicted criminals… live.

Then we have a welcome return to Mr Pip author Lloyd Philips with The Cage (p6; Text Publishing Company, 9781911231202, p/b, £10.99). This strange and confronting modern parable is about the treatment of two homeless and stateless men living in a cage in the grounds of a hotel. In crime, first up we have Overkill (p8; Orenda, 9781912374274, p/b, £8.99) – a taut, atmospheric and page-turning thriller, Overkill marks the start of an unputdownable and unforgettable series from one of New Zealand’s finest

crime writers, Vanda Symon. Then, featuring the utterly brilliant strapline: “Crazy is Normal. It’s Everyone’s Biggest Secret” Bellevue Square (p8; No Exit, 9780857302670, p/b, £8.99) is bound to be a sure-fire hit with booksellers, being as it stars Jean – a bookstore owner in downtown Toronto – who keeps being told people have seen her doppelgänger. Women rule the month in graphic novels with Fruit of Knowledge (p15; Fantagraphics, 9781683961109, h/b, £19.99), as internationally acclaimed cartoonist Liv Stromquist riffs on the outrageous history of menstruation and half the population’s genitalia, in a book that is so good half of Sweden own a copy (statistically).

And now some excellent non-fiction. The Eye (p22; New Vessel Press, 9781939931580, h/b, £20) is an art adventure story that exposes readers to a secret, high-stakes profession involving masterpieces, massive amounts of money and an intense love of painting. Sticking with art, Bored Tourists (p23; Hoxton Mini Press, 9781910566367, p/b, £9.95) a colourful, ironic look at tourists on holiday, documenting their funny and bizarre behaviour. And finally, moving to music (with more than a hint of politics) We Are The Clash (p23; Akashic Books, 9781617752933, p/b, £15.99) is an impassioned history of the final, turbulent years of The Clash under the dark shadow of Reagan and Thatcher. That’s all for this month folks! Have a good one and we’ll see you next time.

FRUIT OF KNOWLEDGE

Stromquist, Liv & Bowers, Melissa (trans.)

From Adam and Eve to pussy hats, people have punished, praised, pathologised, and politicised vulvas, vaginas, clitorises, and menstruation. In this graphic nonfiction book, drawn in chunky, punky pen, Swedish cartoonist Liv Stromquist traces how different cultures and traditions have shaped women’s health and beyond. Her biting, informed commentary and ponytailed avatar guides the reader from the darkest chapters of history (a clitoridectomy performed on a five-year-old American child as late as 1948) to the lightest (vulvas used as architectural details as a symbol of protection). KEY SELLING POINTS • There could be no better or more politically charged time to publish this comic. It is extremely relevant and topical. • In January 2017, five million people worldwide marched for women’s rights, and more again in January 2018. • Accessible and funny, drawing on academic research and art history to explore women’s health. • A bestseller in Sweden, it sold 40,000 copies, meaning one in every twenty-five people own a copy. • For fans of Kate Beaton’s Hark! A Vagrant and Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For. ISBN 13: 9781683961109, 144pp h/b, £19.99 Published by FANTAGRAPHICS Rep Territories: UK, Ireland, Europe, Middle & Far East

PETEY & PUSSY: PUPPY LOVE Kerschbaum, John

Petey is a compulsive dog that values his unchecked freedom and exemption from responsibility. Pussy is an irritable, self-absorbed cat with a gambling problem. They are joined by the obnoxious Bernie the bird, who has courted a new girlfriend (or is it just a mirror?) and their owner, a sexually frustrated geriatric who is more concerned with online shopping then her pets. Their darkly hilarious adventures include tracking down troublesome squirrels, barely taking care of a new litter of puppies, and avoiding the dreaded ‘snip-snip’ from the veterinarian.

KEY SELLING POINTS • Like the Secret Life of Pets for grown-ups, with foul-mouthed animals that hang out in dive bars. • Reads as though Larry David wrote an X-Rated Tom and Jerry strip. • This is the sequel to the 2009 cult favourite of the same name, but can be read as a standalone. • Much of the humor is mined from the characters’ dysfunctional dynamics, like in Rick and Morty. • Misanthropic satire softened by its anthropomorphic characters, in the vein of Crumb’s Fritz the Cat. WE ARE THE CLASH

Reagan, Thatcher, and the Last Stand of a Band That Mattered Andersen, Mark & Heibutzki, Ralph

We Are The Clash is a gripping tale of how the band fractured by its Top 10 success - fought to reinvent and purify itself as George Orwell’s 1984 loomed. This extraordinary effort crashed headlong into a wall of internal contradictions, personal tragedy, and rising right-wing power as personified by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. While the world teetered on the nuclear abyss, British miners waged a life-or-death strike, and tens of thousands died from US guns in Central America, The Clash launched a desperate last stand, shattering the band just as its controversial final album, Cut the Crap, was emerging. KEY SELLING POINTS • The Clash, once labelled ‘The Only Band That Matters’, are still hugely popular. • Most Clash histories effectively end with the ejection of Mick Jones in 1983, this book goes beyond. • Interwoven with the politics of the time, the book will be more than a typical rock biography. • Includes black and white photos at the beginning of each chapter. DUTY TO STAND ASIDE, THE

Nineteen Eighty-Four and the Wartime Quarrel of George Orwell and Alex Comfort Laursen, Eric

The Duty to Stand Aside tells the story of one of the most intriguing yet little-known literary-political feuds - and friendships - in 20th-century English literature. It examines the arguments that divided George Orwell and Alex Comfort during WWII. Laursen’s book takes a fresh look at the Orwell-Comfort quarrel and the lessons it holds for our very different world - in which war has been replaced by undeclared ‘conflicts,’ civilian bombing is even more enthusiastically practiced, and moral choices between two sides are rarely straightforward. KEY SELLING POINTS • Two prominent authors agree on the duty of intellectuals in society (if little else). • The same complex issues are very much at play on the global stage today. • A fascinating study of two remarkable twentieth century figures confronting perennial questions about war and the state. SONS OF CAIN

A History of Serial Killers from the Stone Age to the Present Vronsky, Peter

History

ARCHIVE THAT, COMRADE!

Left Legacies and the Counter Culture of Remembrance Cohen, Phil

In Sons of Cain investigative historian Peter Vronsky examines our understanding of serial killing from its prehistoric anthropological evolutionary dimensions in the pre-civilization era (c. 15,000 BC) to today. Delving back into human history and deep into the human psyche, he focuses strictly on sexual serial killers: thrill killers who engage in murder, rape, torture, cannibalism and necrophilia, as opposed to for-profit serial killers, including hit men, or ‘political’ serial killers, like terrorists or genocidal murderers. KEY SELLING POINTS • Peter Vronsky is widely considered an expert in this specific field of history. • His previous book, Serial Killers, sold over 105,000 copies and was called the definitive history of serial murder. • Son of Cain is not a dry academic history nor a series of entries but a relatable narrative with fascinating stories. • Human fascination with serial killers and their crimes is powerful, as seen in favourite films, TV shows and podcasts. ISBN 13: 9780425276976, 400pp p/b, £12.99 Published by BERKLEY Rep Territories: UK & Ireland

The book explores issues of archival theory and practice that arise for any project aspiring to provide an open access platform for political dialogue and democratic debate. How far can the archive serve as a platform for dialogue and debate between different generations of activists in a culture that fetishises the evanescent present, practices a profound amnesia about its counterfactual past, and forecloses the sociological imagination of an alternative future? Can the Left establish its own autonomous model of commemoration? KEY SELLING POINTS • Author Phil Cohen played a key role in the London counterculture scene of the 1960s. • A searing meditation on the politics of memory and the history of the Left. • Explores how archives can let the past live, whilst simultaneously looking to the future. • Examining past and present (as well as potential) archival practice and theory, drawing on Cohen’s own experience. • Examines theories and arguments not only from the UK, but from a wide range of European thought. DESTROYING THE BABY IN THEMSELVES Why the two boys killed James Bulger Jackson, David

That blurred, foggy frame of the security video has become engraved on the public conscience. We can never know the whole truth of what followed, but a critical re-focussing on the Bulger case is essential if we are to challenge the paralysing horror of the event. We all felt appalling pain at James Bulger’s death, yet we are part of a culture which pressures boys to be ever more aggressively manly, to be harder, stronger, more commanding and powerful. FEAR OF BEING SEEN AS WHITE LOSERS, THE Jackson, David

Experimentation to Realization Gingko Press

Surf to Skate - Volume 2 picks up where the first tome left off. In the 70s skateboarding gear made quantum leaps in performance and aesthetics.
