Jackie Flemington is a Project Worker at Avondale.
Hi, I’m Jackie Flemington and I’m a Project Worker at Avondale which is a residential service for adults with complex needs and learning disabilities. As a project worker, my main responsibility is caring for individuals, as well as carrying out some admin work and being involved in one-toones with service users. I think Turning Point is unique in the way we support our service users because we strive to involve service users with the community and integrate them into it. Furthermore, the staff all work together as a team. Caring for individuals is for me the best part of my job; supporting them in living as normal a life as possible and helping them to get out and about in the community.

In this job being able to think of others and how they feel is an invaluable skill. Communicating is so crucial as is continuity of care. Some of the individuals don’t manage too well with change but at Avondale we have dedicated staff members who have been here for a long time. I myself have been working at the service for 14 years and I believe this longevity helps to make the residents feel more settled.
There is a misconception and stigma that people with learning disabilities are different. The general public often sees them this way and don’t believe that they will ever be “normal”. For me, I just see them as ordinary people. I am passionate about being a part of Turning Point. If I didn’t believe that Turning Point was making a genuine difference for so many individuals, I can honestly say I wouldn’t have stayed as long as I have.
