Nqobile Ncube is a support worker at Sybden House in Hertfordshire, a residential care home for adults with learning disabilities.

I love what I’m doing and I always try and do the best that I can do.

We are one of the best services! I’ve been a part of Turning Point for four years now and I like what they are doing because they’re able to support people’s choices. I love what I’m doing and I always try and do the best that I can do. However, I do think that there should be more recognition for the work that the staff do. Overall, Turning Point is a good organisation. After all, I have been working here for four years. At Sybden, we celebrated Turning Point’s 50th anniversary by organising a BBQ. The BBQ was ‘mwah’, it was sweet. A lot of people attended. We had the local MP make an appearance and the local church people came as well. It was a great turnout. We really enjoyed the BBQ.

Lucy Clayton is a project worker and People’s Parliament leader and Harriet Gorringe is a support worker for Wiltshire Supported Living, a group of 11 local community based supported living homes for people with learning disabilities.

It was nice to see everybody getting together, the atmosphere was great.

Individuals and staff in Wiltshire celebrated Turning Point turning 50 by organising a party during last month’s People’s Parliament meeting. During the party, we talked about what we liked about Turning Point and why we like living there. We had a large photo frame, which people used to take pictures with. It was a really good activity. It was nice to see everybody getting together, the atmosphere was great. The party was held at Bouverie Avenue, one of Wiltshire’s supported living houses. It was very busy in the house and lots of positive interaction and conversations took place.

We were serving scones and jammie dodgers, we went all out for the sweet stuff !

The party lasted for an hour and a half but it was amazing. There was an option of wearing red and white because there was a red and white theme for the decorations and food. We were serving scones and jammie dodgers, we went all out for the sweet stuff ! The residents enjoyed the party and liked taking pictures with their friends using the photo frame. Sarah Gorringe, the team leader, came up with the photo frame idea but we all helped bring the idea to life. We had so much fun!

Mellisa Morrison is a support worker at Timberlea, a supported living service in Hertfordshire that provides care for adults with learning disabilities. At Timberlea, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Turning Point by organising a Sunday roast and it was wonderful. Andreea Dobircianu, a support worker and I personally created and sent out the invitations. We invited other services but they were unable to come, but it did mean more food for us! We also invited the individual’s friends and family to come along and to celebrate Turning Point’s achievement with us. It was a wonderful day and we really enjoyed ourselves.

The individuals were not expecting their friends and family to come so it was a pleasant surprise; they were really happy that they came to celebrate Turning Point’s 50th anniversary with us. The individuals we support and their relatives spent some time talking, playing games and seeing pictures of activities they have engaged in, in previous weeks. It was a marvellous day!
