The Research group of

Civil Engineering Future’s buildings through digitalization and resource-efficiency

Civil Engineering Various research and development projects, structure technical services and updating training in civil engineering are included in the activity of the research group. Research focus areas include digitalization of construction and information modelling, energy efficiency, indoor air and building health. There is diverse research equipment for different building physical measurements such as surface and drill hole measurements of dampness, thermographic surveys and airproof measurements. Also condition evaluation, condition and indoor air research and bridge checks are included in both education and field research. Students perform the research guided and supervised by their teacher. In updating training we offer e.g. building health and indoor air specialist education.

PROJECTS: • INTOKE: the aim of ESF-funded infra building information modelling project is to create a regional know-how network in infra building, develop methods based on information modelling, add understanding about the benefits of information modelling amongst people working in field of infra and guarantee small and medium-sized companies´ continuity in Southwest-Finland. • Storing heat energy: depending on buildings´ need of heating and cooling bearing piles can work as the collector of heat energy or via piles can be stored waste heat or heat collected from solar energy. The system developed can be utilized in both redevelopment and renovation.

• Swan symbol in building: a building can also get a Swan symbol when its effect on the environment has been low and in manufacturing the environment from raw materials to the ready product is taken into account. • The suitability of hemp structure and recyclability in the structure: finding out the acoustic features of hemp structure for commercial applications and the recyclability of the structure as a nutrient in practice and in part of legislation. The project promotes putting energy efficient, carbon neutral and safe material into operation and a continual cycle of material in construction industry and material production. • Unrestricted playground – sporty plays for all the children: a guide of how to construct an unrestricted playground and plan drawings of playgrounds for the cities of Turku and Pori.
