Indoor Environment Creating comfortable and productive spaces by using high-quality tested products
Indoor Environment The research group of the Indoor Environment investigates studies how different factors in the indoor environment, such as noise and acoustics, air conditioning and the psychological factors related to the environment affect the well-being of people.
PROJECTS:
The purpose of the research activities is to produce applied research data which can be utilized benefited in product development related to the indoor environment, in developing the national regulations and design guidelines on the indoor environment, in international standardization and teaching.
• AIRBORNE – Assessing hospital-acquired infection risks to healthcare workers from patients infected with aerosoltransmitted infections: We study the factors affecting the infection risk in co-operation with Leicester Royal Infirmary (UK) and the University of Turku.
The indoor environment research laboratory comprises a research hall, three reverberation chambers and two psychological study rooms. In the field, our operational environments include e.g. offices, hospitals, schools, residential buildings and residential environments.
FOCUS AREAS:
• Anojanssi – Rating methods of noise annoyance: we develop objective rating methods, which can be used to predict noise annoyance.
• AKUSAI – Acoustic satisfaction hospital environments: we determine, how the hospital staff perceives the work and acoustic environment in various kinds of hospital units. • MONITOI – Well-being in activity-based offices: we investigate how the staff perceives the relocation from private office rooms to an activity-based office. • Protective ventilation in hospital isolation rooms: we develop air distribution methods to protect the hospital staff from airborne infections.
