General Manager

e are proud to present our third annual 40 Under 40 magazine, brought to you by The Tuscaloosa News. This project is truly a labor of love, one that has been months in the making. It started with input from our community, and this year we received over 80 nominations. From there our team narrowed the list to 40 finalists. On the following pages you will meet those 40 individuals. What they have in common is a deep commitment to their community. Each of them is younger than 40 years old and in the time of their lives when they are juggling careers, busy families and community service. They are the people working to make Tuscaloosa and West Alabama a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. We hope you enjoy the 2020 class of 40 Under 40 as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Congratulations to those who were selected this year, and on behalf of the Tuscaloosa and West Alabama community, we appreciate all that you do!

TODD HESTER

39YEARS OLD

Why did you go into your particular field?: Growing up in rural Alabama I spent much of my time outdoors. Whether it was fishing, hiking, swimming or just playing, I was able to see the raw beauty of our state from a first person perspective. Also growing up and visiting my grandmother frequently we would watch Alabama Public Television (mainly because it was one of two channels she got). There was and still is the show Discovering Alabama in which Dr. Doug Phillips would tell the viewers about the amazing natural wonders of our state. Being isolated in my rural community it was an eye opening show that really solidified my love of my state and for the amazing natural wonders we have here. It also instilled in me the importance of educating others about that wonder and importance.

Born and raised locally, a product of our local school systems, and a graduate of the University of Alabama. Tuscaloosa is my home, and I’m proud to be a part of writing a small part of her story. My love of helping people find just the right home or sell the one they own led to me being selected as the Tuscaloosa Association of Realtor’s “Rookie of the Year” in 2011. I was also named the “Best of the Best Real Estate Agent in 2019” by Tuscaloosa. Over the past ten and a half years, I have been fortunate to assist hundreds of buyers and sellers in their real estate transactions. Their trust in me has been my greatest reward.

Why did you go into your particular field?: I decided to go to law school because, after doing an internship in accounting, I realized that I wanted to be more involved with clients at the planning stage as opposed to preparing their tax returns. I was interested in helping clients formulate a plan to achieve their goals and then preparing the documents to achieve those goals. Since I had a background in accounting, I wanted to practice in the area of tax, business, commercial, and corporate law as I thought that my accounting degree would allow me to better understand what my clients want to achieve. Once in law school, I decided to pursue an LL.M. in Taxation which required me to take several classes on estate planning for high-net-worth individuals, which I really enjoyed. After graduating, I was fortunate enough to be able to find a job which allowed me to focus on the areas of law that were of interest to me, which included estate planning, tax law, and business, commercial, and corporate transactions. My estate planning practice then naturally led to assisting clients with the probate process and transferring assets after a loved one passed away. I have come to enjoy helping people through stressful situations, whether it be a business deal, the death of a loved one, or issues with the IRS, and being a part of a client’s team of trust advisors.
