From the General Manager...
W
BOBBY RICE
General Manager
e are proud to present our second annual 40 Under 40 magazine, brought to by The Tuscaloosa News. This project is truly a labor of love, one that was months in the making. It started with input from our community, and this year we received over 130 nominations. From there our team narrowed the list to 40 finalists. On the following pages you will meet those 40 individuals. What they have in common is a deep commitment to their community. Each of them is younger than 40 years old and in the time of their lives when they are juggling careers, busy families and community service. They are the people working to make Tuscaloosa and West Alabama a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. We hope you enjoy 40 Under 40 as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Congratulations to those who were selected this year, and on behalf of this community, we appreciate all that you do.

Current Title: Director of Planning
Other Certifications or Awards: I’m AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners), and a certified Barre Code instructor.
Place of Business: City of Tuscaloosa Education: Bachelor of S cience in Public Administration from Missouri State University; Master of Urban Planning from University of Kansas
Hobbies and Passions: I enjoy snow skiing, traveling, spending time with my family (including our dogs!) on our farm, paddle boarding, and hanging out with my brunch crew.
Family: It’s just me and the cat in Tuscaloosa! Parents in southeast Missouri and a brother and sister-in-law in North Carolina/Oklahoma. City: Tuscaloosa, AL Hometown: Ellsinore, MO Professional Responsibilities: I work closely with everyone to make sure that our Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision regulations are being followed while also building relationships with our community and coming up with solutions. The City is currently in the process of updating the Comprehensive Plan for Tuscaloosa -- a document we’re calling Framework. This plan for the City will serve us for years to come, and a legacy project for those involved. A lot of my time is spent drafting policies and interpreting old regulations -- if you’d like to open a telegraph office, I can tell you where! Community Involvement: At this juncture, I’m not involved in any single organization outside of my work at City Hall except for Young Tuscaloosa. I participate in various events around town to support different organizations, always looking forward to the Mayor’s Cup 5K for Tuscaloosa’s Pre-K Initiative.

ASHLEY CRITES
30 YEARS OLD
Why did you go into your particular field: I grew up the daughter of an Army officer, so public service was (and still is) just a normal part of life. I realized in high school that city management and local government was a way for me to serve without having to get up for PT in the mornings. I took an “Intro to Planning” GenEd class my freshman year of undergrad and realized that combining Planning with my Public Administration degree was what I wanted to do. Planners get to see, touch, and feel their communities in ways that most other professions can’t -- it’s an honest to goodness SimCity game brought to life, but the stakes are real. How do you hope to grow in your career: As I look around Tuscaloosa today, it’s a different Tuscaloosa than the one I moved to six years ago, and I am exceptionally blessed to be in the position I’m in at 30. I look forward to continuing to see changes in our community and I value being the one that folks come to talk to when they have big ideas. Planning is constantly evolving, and technology changing the game -- the ability to use data (instead of gut feelings) to make decisions or recommend a course of action makes our community better and stronger.

I love spending time with my husband, RT, and two boys, Carson and Brady. Being a mom of two active boys, means a life outdoors and I love it! We enjoy watching them play sports, hunting, fishing, and traveling together. Why did you go into your particular field: I went into marketing because I wanted to be in a field that allowed me to connect with people. The research side of marketing, determining “why” someone makes the decision they choose to make, is what initially intrigued me; however, seeing the success of a campaign is what really motivates me. Throughout my career, I have seen how effective communication and TEAMwork can bring success to a company and this is all made possible, many times, through marketing. How do you hope to grow in your career: My hope is to increase my contribution to Alabama ONE by remaining committed to our mission and achieving the goals we’ve established as a TEAM. I believe that the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. in Health Education and Health Promotion would better equip me with timely and relevant resources, theoretical and practical knowledge, and skills needed to do meaningful work in field of suicide. Upon completing my degree my career aspirations include utilizing Health Education to promote positive mental health will lead to healthier lives for youth and ultimately decrease suicide rates. Why did you go into your particular field: I wanted to go to an arts college, but my parents didn’t think “art” was a viable career path. They encouraged me to think of a way to incorporate my artistic talents into a more focused field. That led me to an advertising major at The University of Alabama. Since graduation, I’ve had a public relations title for the most part, but have always had the opportunity to continue to explore my creativity through writing, design and events How do you hope to grow in your career: I’m really happy where I am now in my career. I work for an amazing organization with a group of people who I love and have such big hearts to do big things. I hope together we can continue to increase the amount of people in West Alabama we can help and make an even bigger, positive impact in our community. I’m also really passionate about the West Alabama Food & Wine Festival and want to see it grow into a premiere regional attraction. With the rock star committee that’s in place now, I know bigger things are in store!

Why did you go into your particular field: I developed an interest in civics and government at an early age. That interest morphed into a passion during college. It became very clear to me during this time that the actions of local governments and civic groups affect all of us. I decided to pursue an education in Urban/Regional Planning and Political Science with the goal of establishing a career right here in west Alabama. I was given an opportunity to join the West Alabama Regional Commission as an Economic Development Planner right out of school and jumped on it. My work allowed me to see the direct, positive impact that community and economic development projects have on people. This fueled a great desire to help improve our area; and, fortunately, my career path led me to a position where I am able to work every day to help my hometown grow and prosper. How do you hope to grow in your career: I hope that my professional work and community involvement will have a positive impact. My desire is to pursue and complete projects that will benefit our City and region for years to come. MICHAEL JOSHUA DOGAN
40 YEARS OLD
Why did you go into your particular field: Curiosity and a desire to honor my parents. Was raised around steel fabrication and erection. My parents own Dogan Steel Inc. Around the age of 14, I began wondering how someone knew what size beam or column or stringer to use in different applications. So, began learning how to detail steel and then worked my way through engineering classes until I found some answers. Next thing I know I have about 16 years of design experience of commercial and industrial projects. Some completed projects range from 12 story condos in FL, to new shopping centers in Bethlehem, PA to large churches as far north Buffalo, NY. How do you hope to grow in your career: I hope to continue to improve not only as an engineer but as a person and even more so as a Christian. I am always open to new design and detailing methods that are both practical and easy to construct, granted that they do not jeopardize safety and still accomplish the main goal. Believe wholeheartedly in the team approach to design. If field issues occur, rather than wasting time and energy pointing fingers, I try to focus on finding practical solutions to keep the project moving forward and our client happy. Life is too short to do otherwise. We should keep in mind that we are all going to likely work together again anyway. It is more enjoyable for me to focus on finding solutions and try to keep moving forward rather than focus on how overwhelming some problems may appear. It is sort of like chopping down a large tree, just keep swinging and chopping and don’t grow weary, because you know that progress is being made, and that with every swing there is a little less of the obstacle standing in your way.

When I went to reconsider my major, I thought of my uncle who worked in logistics for the Army for 30 years. I thought I might like doing what he did. Sure enough, when I looked at the coursework needed to graduate in Operations Management, I knew it was perfect for me. This wasn’t a field where you sit behind a textbook, this was a field where you go out and do it until you learn to do it better. This idea of learning a process inside and out, working with others, and putting all the puzzle pieces together to make things more efficient sounded like the most fun career I could think of. Plus, I’d already been doing it my whole life. I’ve always been that girl that plans the fundraisers, the road trips, the projects, and just about everything else. Then, my internship and subsequent career at Michelin’s BFGoodrich plant here in town only validated my passion. Every day is completely different, but every day I get to walk into this quirky 70+ year old plant, and work with others to try and make things better.

It’s also where I’ve met some of the most uplifting people - the kind of people that light up the room and make you strive to be better all at once.! Why did you go into your particular field: When I was younger, I wanted to be Abigail Chase from National Treasure. I was convinced I would study and preserve history. Then I started as a Freshman at Alabama, and realized that I didn’t want to sit through history lectures. I loved reading about history and learning new things, but the idea of staring at textbooks for 4 years did not appeal to me.

My dad has been in the car business his whole life. His dad was a car dealer as well in Bessemer, Roy Buckner Chevrolet. TANNER JOHNSON FUNK
28 YEARS OLD
Hobbies: Traveling - favorite city is New York! and helping others with travel plans to create a memorable experience no matter where they are going, obsessing over Captain and Sailor, spending time with my husband of four years, and spoiling our three nieces. Why did you go into your particular field: It happened by chance, and for a purpose. My degree is in Business with a concentration in Professional Sales, so the banking industry never crossed my mind when thinking about my life, long term. I was in retail right out of college, which is what I set my mind to years before graduating. I realized quickly that quality of life is more important than what I thought I wanted, so I left retail, with no real plan. An opportunity at Alabama ONE fell into my lap in late 2014 and I have never looked back. God had a greater plan for me, and over four years later, I am still so thankful for the part-time job that led to a true work family that I look forward to growing with each day. The opportunities afforded to me through Alabama ONE have not ceased, and I will never take that for granted. It is truly a special place. How do you hope to grow in your career: For me, the credit union movement is fairly new. It is very important to me that as I grow, I am helping others put themselves in the best financial situation possible by introducing them to my credit union. My generation is all about “me” and all about “now”, and credit unions are all about our member, but young people are not aware! I hope at the end of my career, I can look back and know that I have helped others meet their goals from saving enough birthday money to open that first checking account, to getting approved for their first home. As an employee and co-worker, I hope to grow into someone that others can trust and depend on no matter the situation. Also, I hope that as I grow, I can share my experiences and passions with other young professionals in the same way that my mentors have done with me. It is imperative that young people feel passionate about what they are doing, or they will never see a reason to grow.

I will also plan time to appreciate the work we are accomplishing, so that I can be a better leader for my team who is dedicated to our clients and building their brands. Why did you go into your particular field: I have always wanted to work in the non-profit sector because it’s a way to actively make the world a better place. I enjoy working with people who want to do the same. In the case of Kentuck, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to apply for a job working for a nationally-recognized arts organization. I had been going to the Kentuck Festival since I moved here in 2004, so I already felt like I knew them. Luckily, there was so much more to learn! I am constantly striving to become more involved in the community that I have grown to call home. Community involvement is a critical for any non-profit’s survival, and it is integral to Kentuck’s mission. I am also always on the look out for new artists to tell about the Kentuck Festival, our three gallery spaces, or Kentuck’s Gallery Shop. Not only do I want Kentuck to promote the highest quality art, I want artists to have as many venues as possible to sell their work, and I want to open a dialogue with the community about the art that they value. In addition, I am working with Kentuck’s Executive Director, Amy Echols, and Director of Operations, Sherri Warner, to learn more about grant writing and securing funding for Kentuck through memberships. I hope that as Kentuck continues to grow my job will grow to fit it. I anticipate that every year we will reach more and more members of the community; thus, we’ll need to provide more programs to keep community engagement rising.

From law enforcement and traffic safety, to vehicle registrations and insurance verification, to child insurance and HIV prevention, all of my efforts
Why did you go into your particular field: The tragic death of Jaylen Merriweather spoke volumes that we needed to come together as a community and do better for our teens. We have many wonderful opportunities for our teens in Tuscaloosa, but some of those opportunities do not reach to the impoverished areas and those are also the future doctors, lawyers, professional athletes, motivation speakers, etc. My goal was to establish a foundation based off the principles and love for mankind of my late grandfather Rev. Sylvester Croom, Sr. that illustrated that we are all a product of our environment until our environment changes. How do you hope to grow in your career: Honestly, the goal is to have others around the community and the country to see the efforts of The Croom Foundation and aid in these efforts whether financial or with their time. We want to recruit strong male role models and female role models that are not looking to self promote their own agenda, but rather live by paying it forward to someone that may never pay it back to them in return. are applied in nature and in one way or another (speeding tickets, food stamps, etc.) have touched the lives of almost every community and person in Alabama.

Why did you go into your particular field: I had a great ATV when I was a kid and one day while riding it caught fire. It was insured and instead of buying a replacement, my parents bought me a computer. I latched on to it immediately and learned everything about it. From that point on I knew technology was in my future. After 9/11, there was a significant need for applied technology in data integration initiatives for law enforcement, so I leveraged my skills in that domain to try to make a difference. From that point on I knew that applied real-world data integration solutions was my field of choice How do you hope to grow in your career: I plan to progress through to full professor status and then focus on administrative research roles. My initial career trajectory did not include becoming a professor, but after a prompting from a previous mentor to go back to graduate school and serving as a graduate instructor, I found that I greatly enjoyed teaching. Why did you go into your particular field: As far back as high school, I knew I wanted to grow up and make a difference. I didn’t know what exactly that looked like, but upon leaving graduate school, I was given an opportunity to work as a Sexual Assault Prevention Educator at Turning Point. While working in that capacity as an educator and advocate, I developed a passion for social services. I knew that through my work, I could be the person who advocated for others who did not have the resources to be their own advocate. Through teaching rape prevention, I realized how much more there can be done to help families in Tuscaloosa. When an opportunity to work at TOP--an all-encompassing resource center for families—presented itself, I was eager to join their team and grow with the agency. It was an experience that allowed me to work in an environment with many departments that all depend on each other to succeed and promote self-sufficiency for families. My time at TOP has evolved and grown, but those dreams from way back when are present every morning when I walk into our building. How do you hope to grow in your career: My career is difficult to define in that I have worn many different hats, and the nature of our agency is constantly evolving. For the future, I want to continue to be an advocate, I want to continue to be a lifelong learner, and I hope to grow with the knowledge and experience that I gain along the way. I want to find new and creative ways to serve and engage the community to make a better Tuscaloosa for the next generation—the one my children will experience and come to love as I have.
