Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, I must start my intro this month with an apology for July’s crossword puzzle. The supplier notified me of an error, but too late for me to make any changes, the magazines had already gone to print and there was nothing I could do. As you can imagine, with 37,000 magazines being delivered, my email and telephone line have been hot with readers finding the “Simple Crossword” not so simple! Most were good humoured and understanding, asking if it was April 1st! Unfortunately, I’m disappointed to say, one or two were rather curt and less understanding, but I suppose that’s life, we are not all the same. Life is not perfect and things go wrong now and then, especially, it seems, when running six magazines from the bottom of your garden (as I do), but I look on it as an opportunity to learn. I bet it really
challenged your brains for a while though didn’t it! Normal service has now resumed so I hope you enjoy this month’s crossword. July was certainly a challenge for me, my smartphone app, which I so proudly announced in the magazine, incurred a delay. The approval of the app by Apple was delayed, and without Apple approval I could not go live, even with the Android version. Hopefully by the time you read this the problem will be resolved and the app available for free download by anyone with a smartphone. Have a great month!

ust when you thought you could sit back in the garden and enjoy the fruits of your labours (or just sit in the garden), I have some veg sowing tips for you. Late summer is a very good time to get some leafy crops into the ground and will ensure that you can keep picking for salads and stir-fries until the winter (and beyond). Crops that

bolt (run to seed and then taste bitter) when sown earlier in the season, will make a decent amount of leaf now and be slower to bolt. You can be picking things like Spinach, Swiss Chard and Kale as young salad leaves within a few weeks of sowing and then leave some of them to grow on to give you greens through the autumn and winter. The general garden could be looking a little tired by now (if mine’s anything to go by), but if you show a little kindness to the plants that have been flowering their socks off with a light trim and some deadheading, and feed with a high potash fertiliser, they’ll reward you with fresh growth and new flowers. And there are (in theory) some plants that are only just getting going now, so if all yours have gone over and the borders are lacking in colour, treat yourself to a few late flowering perennials and keep the show on
the garden the road. Dahlias, Penstemons and Salvias are good value, flowering until the frosts and they’re easy to propagate too. If you’ve had enough and want to chuck in the trowel for a while (it’s been a hard year after all), just try one last task before you do and think about sowing a green manure where there are patches of bare soil (remove weeds to expose these where necessary). A green manure (clover, tares, mustard etc) will act as ground cover while it grows, preventing too many weeds germinating and then will provide nutrients and create a good soil structure when dug into the soil during autumn or spring. You can comfort yourself then that at least something useful will be happening in the garden in your absence.

Home-Made Burgers 1. Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince.
10
2. Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like. You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too. 3. A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together or use clean hands to mix as thoroughly as possible. 4. Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wetted hands. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked. 5. Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the middle. To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes. 6. If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw. 7. Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.
All You Need To Know! It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious home-made char-grilled burgers. Follow these top tips for the best burgers around… Please Note: Dishes containing pink meats or undercooked eggs are not suitable for pregnant women, children under 5, eldery people or anyone that is ill or has reduced immunity

Creating Space Are you feeling cluttered, chaotic and claustrophobic at home? Katherine Sorrell offers six quick and easy tips to help create more space
20
Step One: Clear out that clutter It’s boring but simple: sort through your stuff. All your stuff. Unless you’re absolutely certain you want to keep it where it is, then put it into boxes or bags marked for rubbish, recycling, giving away, mending or storing elsewhere. If it’s too painful to do this all at once, aim for one room per week, or else do ten minutes a day – then make a habit of keeping on top of it, with regular sortouts. You’ll be amazed how much extra space you find when your house is no longer crammed full of unnecessary clutter. Step Two: Create super-efficient storage Every nook and cranny around your home can be used to store your possessions in a neat and organised fashion. Built-in cupboards make the most of space, as they can be made to fit into the most awkward of corners, and stretched right to the ceiling for maximum capacity. Paint them the same colour as the walls and they will blend in brilliantly. On the other hand, off-theshelf storage tends to be cheaper, more flexible and whether it’s a vintage French armoire or a cheap coloured plastic bucket, can be tailored to suit your style and budget. Step Three: Lighten up Start by ensuring that your windows are brilliantly clean, that curtains or blinds don’t block them, and that furniture is
Pale colours and slender furniture really helps to emphasise space. Modena sofa (medium), £999; Evelyn chair in Pisa, £349; Morrissey coffee table, £349; all M&S, www.marksandspencer.com.
placed in just the right spots to make the most of natural light. As for artificial lighting, bear in mind that the traditional central pendant, used on its own, creates gloomy corners and offers no atmosphere. Instead, think about employing a more interesting combination of different types of lighting for flexibility, comfort and interest. For a quick upgrade on a budget, simply replace main light switches with dimmers, and plug in a selection of table or floor lamps at key points, to layer the lighting and emphasise special features. Step Four: Be flexible with furniture When you have run out of space, it makes sense to take a long, hard look at your furniture and make sure that every single piece is worth its place in your home. Simple, slender styles have the least impact in a small space, while pale or transparent pieces blend into the background, and anything raised on legs will make your room seem larger (because there is more visible floor area). In general, avoid deep upholstery, bulky outlines and fussy detailing. Special foldaway or compact furniture can help – but don’t sacrifice comfort or function – and with a touch of lateral thinking you can turn ordinary
the home
furnishings into dual-purpose ones, such as a chest of drawers that doubles as a bedside table or a coffee table that includes space to store magazines. Step Five: Add glass and mirrors With a little thought and not too much expense, simply hanging a mirror can create the illusion of space where it does not exist and double the apparent size of a room. One positioned opposite a window will distribute the maximum amount of natural light; near a light fitting, a mirror will reflect its brilliance around the room. Glass, too, provides vistas from room to room or from inside to out, really opening up a home. If you are having building work done, consider glass walls, floors or even stairs, but for quicker, cheaper solutions you could opt for glass doors, glass or acrylic furniture or see-through accessories such as lamp bases, door knobs and vases. Step Six: Use clever colour Colour can manipulate our sense of space enormously. Pale colours seem to recede, enhancing a sense of spaciousness, while darker colours absorb light and therefore appear more enclosing. Colours on the ‘cool’ spectrum, such as blue and green, are more distancing than ‘warm’ colours such as red and yellow. Whites, off-whites and cool pastels are, therefore, perfect for making small spaces seem larger – and they look sophisticated and contemporary, too, especially when combined with the natural textures of materials such as timber and stone.
A 50/50 blind gives you privacy while allowing light to flood through the top half of a window. From £146 for a 1,200mm x 1,200mm 50/50 blind, Clarkes Blinds & Curtains, 01252 544 568; www. blindsandcurtains.biz.

A Proverbial Life... Recently I had the pleasure of attending a local lunch and, for my sins, giving a short talk about my working life. Nothing unusual in that you may think. However, it was one of the most enjoyable and thought provoking experiences I’ve had for a long time. As it turned out I was the only female amongst a group of approximately forty men, the majority of whom were retired and with an average age of approximately seventy - many a deal older. To a man they were suited and booted to perfection; their dark suits or blazers worn with an upright bearing and unconscious pride. Each suit immaculately pressed, every shirt crisply ironed, all ties neatly knotted, proper handkerchiefs tucked into breast pockets and the shoes, polished and buffed to a high sheen with not a trainer or casual loafer in sight. They looked magnificent. Similar attention had also been paid to their personal grooming. There wasn’t a hint of designer stubble gracing any chin or cheeks; those who sported beards or moustaches had taken care to trim and comb them into neatness. Each man had a ‘proper’ haircut and there was evidence of the judicious use of hair creams and oils. There was the most wonderful whiff of plain soap, and the faintest hint of aftershave; nothing floral or light but strong spicy and masculine. Jewellery was discrete: a wedding band, single signet ring, tie pin or chunky cufflinks at wrists. No gold chains, bracelets or similar paraphernalia were on display – if they owned such items they had either tucked them out of sight or left them at home. The only earrings I spotted were worn by the waitresses. I did, however, spot several copper bands; worn no doubt for medicinal purposes. They greeted me with firm handshakes, offers of refreshments, gentle teasing and oh so subtle flirting. They stood when I entered the room and when I left the table. They spoke of their wives, children and grandchildren. Photos were proudly whipped from wallets and passed around to be admired and discussed. In short they were totally charming and lovely.
Clothes (and manners) maketh the man It may be that they weren’t all solely responsible for their dapper appearance. Perhaps a wife or partner had ironed the crisp shirts, or pressed the wrinkle free suits – no matter, the overall effect was that standards had been met. On the way home I stopped to buy some stamps. In the queue in front of me was a good looking teenage boy. Jeans slung artfully half way down his buttocks, displayed six inches of bright red, silk boxer shorts. His hair had been teased and combed into a softfluffy halo, with a long floppy fringe that fell over one eye. On his wrists were countless plaited thread bracelets; brightly coloured plastic strands circled his neck. He was rocking gently to the music plugged into his ears and eating from a large bag of sweets. He smelt wonderful and looked rather beautiful.
I had to give him a gentle nudge and point out that he was next to be served. He turned, smiled, offered a sweet from the bag and stood to one side: “Ladies first.” I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he was the grandson of one of my ‘gents’ from lunch.

Summer Feel great this
It’s never too late to start making yourself feel good - both mentally and physically - and summer is a great time get started. Giving a little attention to your diet, exercise and general wellbeing can really benefit to your overall health.
28
Diet You don’t have to radically alter your diet as even small changes will benefit you. • Blackberries, blueberries, cranberries and strawberries are all high in antioxidants and fibre, are nutritious and eating great handfuls will fill you up with healthy energy • All melons, but particularly watermelons are mainly water. They’re healthy and a great option if you need something sweet • Courgettes, aubergine, mushrooms, leeks, asparagus, onions, peppers and garlic are all delicious grilled or roasted with a light brush of olive oil. High in nutrition and flavour, low in calories • There are no rules for salads - just put in any vegetables or fruit that you have, such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and avocado. Combining different greens or lettuces, such as cos, romaine, Chinese leaf, rocket or watercress make salads more interesting and are cheaper than buying the ready-packaged salads. Add beans, couscous or tabouli for a bit of substance. • Alcohol is high in calories, so reduce this by enjoying a white wine spritzer (50/50 wine with sparkling water) or going for a non-alcohol alternative, such as lemon barley water or lime cordial with sparkling water. Exercise This doesn’t have to mean daily sessions at the gym or long-distance running. The key to weight loss is using up more calories than you’ve eaten, and there are lots of ways you can achieve this: • Walk. Sounds simple - and it is. Start by walking locally three times a week for just 20 minutes. Build up the pace so that you can do the route more quickly and extend the time to 30 minutes by extending your route. If you can fit in four walks a week, or even every day, go for it you will notice the difference. • Yoga is a great exercise for stretching and toning your muscles without having to break out into sweat. In the summer heat, your muscles are already warm and relaxed. Even better, find a class held outside to enjoy nature along with your session. • If you are exercising in the heat, remember to keep to the shade and wear a hat to protect your head and neck. Wearing sunglasses will protect your eyes and help you to avoid squinting, causing lines around the eyes.
• Gardening is great exercise as you use a wide range of muscles and are constantly moving. Wellbeing We all have to deal with stress at some point and research shows that it’s actually the small things in life (being stuck in a traffic jam, forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning, missing a work deadline etc) that causes more tension and anxiety than the major life events. So, allow yourself some ‘me time’. This simply means doing things just for yourself and just for the pleasure of it. Allowing yourself 20 minutes a day to potter in your garden, read the paper, or even take a nap calms the mind, lowers blood pressure and, just as importantly, gives you a few minutes to just ‘be’. More recent research shows that we don’t necessarily need eight hours sleep. Many of us can exist quite happily on less but what’s important is the quality of your sleep rather than the quantity. Try to stick to a routine, even with the lighter summer nights, winding down and avoiding alcohol too late in the evening. If your room gets too warm, fans are a great way to cool the temperature and their low hum will help you drift off to sleep. By Pippa Duncan

The Barn at Kingsnorth
Restored Surrenden, before (right)
Surrenden Lovingly Restored
F
34
ar more than your usual pair of semi’s, Surrenden in Staplehurst was in desperate need of renovation when Woodchurch based Bluebell Developments purchased the property. They were aware that they were taking on a major project but they already had considerable experience in the conversion and renovation of old buildings. Indeed they had won an award sponsored by Ashford Local Authority’s Building Control department in 1999 for their works at Finn Farm, Kingsnorth against very stiff opposition from major national companies.
S
urrenden had for some years been a nursing home but had recently fallen into disrepair and was placed on the market for complete renovation. The house is something of an anomaly and it is difficult to put a date on it. Approaching along the drive, the first thing that strikes you is the grand triple arched portico with its four columns above topped by a classic Palladian style pediment. This style became popular in the early 1700’s, but if you imagine the house without this portico, you have a classic Georgian house of the late 1700’s. Inside, however, the building has a distinctly Regency feel about it and a closer look at some of the external features and at the internal door openings reveals an Egyptian influence! It is my guess that the original architect had a lot of fun designing Surrenden somewhere around 1830.
N
ow known as North Surrenden and South Surrenden it has been lovingly refurbished and converted to form two beautiful houses. Sometimes such conversions result in two properties of which one is vastly superior to the
other but that is not the case here. They are completely different and while one includes the original hallway and many of the graceful original rooms intact, the other offers even more flexible accommodation with the opportunity for part to become a self-contained flat suitable for an elderly relative or perhaps a dream flat for a young adult.
T
he properties are finished to a very high standard and the features include natural English Oak to most of the ground floor rooms and lovely 3/4 height sash windows to the front elevation with 12 panes to the ground floor, 16 to the first floor. Kitchens are fully fitted with new units and include equipment with names like Villeroy and Boch, Neff and Whirlpool, whilst bathrooms have high quality fittings mostly in a Victorian style.
O
riginal or carefully replicated fireplaces, deep skirtings, and panelled doors compliment the high ceilings. As an illustration of the thorough way in which the works have been carried out, damaged or missing areas of plaster cornice work have been carefully replaced by hand moulded copy, indistinguishable from the original sections.
C
urrent projects by Bluebell Dev. Services include Olivia Cottage, just outside of Hamstreet, a delightful conversion of a redundant farm building into four 3 bedroom cottages with stone floors and a wealth of exposed beams, contact Development Services them for details. Tel: 07889 767513

Private Care Service at Bedtimes
Our Private Care Service carers can come to your house and assist you ďŹ rst thing in the morning and / or last thing at night. This help can form part of a tailored package of care that could help you stay in your own home for longer, rather than going into a care home before its really needed.
