This time last year I was buzzing, we had put Lockdown behind us, and I was ready to shop ‘till I dropped! I’ve since learned not to “count my chickens”, or in my case, turkeys. I have two in my freezer from last Christmas, and if it turns out to be just the three of us again, I’ll be searching the internet for imaginative things to do with a turkey (no comments on a postcard please!). On the positive side, there was plenty of Christmas Pudding to go round, and only two of us to eat it! I may have had a little more than I should! Bearing that in mind I’ve decided to prepare for this Christmas by trimming down a little first.

Hi everyone, I hope you are all well, welcome to the Christmas / New Year edition.
Just last week I went on a long Sunday walk with my husband. He’s used to walking for miles, I’m not, so I was shattered as we walked down the lane next to our home. As I was considering how much I needed to put my feet up, I looked up to see a large, brown bull standing in the middle of the road, horns at the ready, blocking our way home! My husband told me to turn around and walk back the way we had come. I walked as fast as I could, thinking that running might not be a wise thing to do. Too scared to turn to look, I asked my husband if it was following us. He said “Yes, it’s running after us, run!”, I was so scared. Two ladies on horseback behind us also turned back the other way. I was franticly looking for a gap in the hedge that we could climb through, but thankfully it gave up the chase. We then had to find footpaths across the fields to get to our home. It was a new first in my life, although I wouldn’t recommend it as a “tick-in-the-box” moment for anyone! I really do think I earned all the Christmas Pudding I can eat for this year!

Anyone with a garden can start right away, as we should all be nurturing nature so that biodiversity can triumph. You need to select plants with ample benefits for insects, allow wood piles and untidy areas to become part of the border, and use vertical fences and walls for further planting.
The gift that keeps on giving There’s no better time to start giving to nature on a permanent basis. Most of us could improve our habits, so that we give more than we take. Within around two years, new developments in England will be expected to demonstrate that their projects will increase biodiversity by at least ten per cent. Known as Biodiversity Net Gain, this is a big change from what happens at the moment. The new Environment Bill will make it necessary for developers to use ecological features and environmental enhancements to protect and improve existing natural habitat and green infrastructure.
Best plants for wildlife Most gardens have room for a tree, if only a small one. Trees and shrubs can support a remarkable number of living things, so if you only have time to plant just one thing in your garden, make it a tree, a shrub or something that provides positive benefits for small creatures. If you have a little more time, a mixed hedge is just about the best you can offer wildlife. Betula: there are 521 species of invertebrates that are known to feed on birch trees and more than 100 of these are exclusive to that particular type of tree. Purple and blue flowers are best for bees! buddleia, catmint, lavender, pulmonaria, penstemon, allium and purple-flowering hardy geraniums can all be seen clearly. Ensure there is something flowering from early spring right through to autumn and even winter.
Amelanchier, the June berry or serviceberry tree: has something to offer wildlife during several seasons. Early spring flowers for pollinators make this small tree look like a white cloud. It also provides multiple nesting opportunities for birds and juicy berries during the late summer.
Butterflies love hebes, sedum (Hylotelephium varieties), Verbena bonariensis, Origanum, Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, buddleia, scabious and many wild flowers such as knapweed.
Conifers: really are worth having! Some have earned negative press over the years but this doesn’t detract from their value to wildlife. There’s probably no better tree for providing nesting sites and protection for a wide range of creatures. Flowering shrubs and perennials: choose single flowers over double, every time. They have an open shape that allows access for the pollinators and nectar-drinkers. Look for yellow stamens within a flower; these will support insects.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PENSIONS • Work out exactly which pensions you have – including the providers’ names, account details, the types of pension scheme and what you’re entitled to. • An adviser can then help review all of the pots you have and create a retirement plan to use them in the most efficient way possible. Everybody deserves to have the best retirement possible, and while each person’s pension savings and goals will be different, planning for the future begins with understanding what you have saved and whether you’re getting the best from it. This can be complicated when you have accumulated a number of different pension pots. This can mean people reach middle age with their retirement savings scattered across half a dozen pension pots, including workplace schemes, any private pensions and your state entitlement. It’s not unusual to ‘lose track’ of a pension, often because people have lost the paperwork, forgotten the name of their provider or can’t remember if they even had a pension with a former employer. If you need to track down missing pensions, there is a free Pensions Tracing Service (0800 731 0193), which can help reunite people with their investments.
What are the different types of pension? There are various different types, but most workplace pensions fall into the categories of Defined Contribution (DC) or Defined Benefit (DB). It’s wise to take time to understand the differences between these and how they work, as the type you have will affect the options available to you at retirement.
Defined Benefit pensions

Defined Benefit pensions, sometimes called ‘finalsalary’ schemes, are run through an employer and pay out a guaranteed income every year in retirement, often a sum that rises with inflation.
You can usually take a tax-free cash lump sum, too. The benefits you receive are based on your earnings and the number of years you have been in the scheme. The rules of the scheme dictate the age at which you can take benefits – it is usually 60 or 65. Because you can’t vary the income you take from a DB pension, it may not have as much flexibility as you would like. However, the benefits of such a scheme – such as a guaranteed income for life – mean they are usually always worth keeping. DB schemes are expensive for employers to run so they are far less common than they used to be, with the majority of employers now offering DC pensions instead.
Defined Contribution pensions With Defined Contribution pensions, individuals build up a pot of money and can choose from a range of options once they reach the age of eligibility (currently 55). Unlike DB pension schemes, the plan is usually run by a pension company rather than your employer (although your employer may also match your contributions up to a certain limit), and your money is invested into a range of funds. The size of your pension pot at retirement will be based on the money you have paid in and the performance of your investments, plus any charges applied by the provider. Your retirement savings will get an extra boost as tax relief is paid on your contributions, with the amount you receive depending on the rate of income tax you pay. One benefit of a DC pension is the flexibility it offers, allowing you to access your savings in a number of different ways. However, there are no guarantees when it comes to how your investments will perform or the size of your pension pot at retirement.

BCA Best Regional Restaurant of the Year 2021: Cinnamon Spice On 7 November 2021, Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA) announced the regional winners of its Restaurant of the Year Awards; where eleven worthy UK regional winners were chosen from hundreds of out-standing entrants. Pension Freedoms
What does greater freedom mean for you? How you spent your pension was restricted by tax law until 19th March 2014. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (George Osborne) removed the restrictions at his budget. This created a minefield of choice for those retiring, so how do you make the right choice? I have spoken to many people who realise that pension freedom creates more choice, but they do not understand this choice or that it brings greater risk with it. Earlier restrictions may not have been popular, but they did at least prevent you from running out of money in retirement. We now live in an era where we live longer and are retired longer so need to make our savings last. The latest figures from the office of national statistics show that of those age 65 now, men will live to be almost 84 and women just over 86. This means that men will on average be retired for just under 18 years and women for just over 20 so your money will need to last a long time. With the demise of final salary schemes, most people I see are taking a portfolio approach to their retirement income by using savings, ISA’s, investments etc to supplement their incomes. When doing this it is important that you do not pay more tax than you have to and plan the most efficient way of spending your money. The last thing you want is for the tax man to take a large amount of money from your retirement fund. Taking a large amount from your pension could take you from being a basic rate taxpayer to being a higher rate taxpayer over-night. Careful planning on using your tax-free cash so that you maximise your personal allowance is important.
You also need to be aware that spending money from your pension instead of your savings could leave your children with an inheritance tax bill that may have been avoided. You could significantly boost your retirement income through getting advice. How does this happen? It’s all about understanding the available products, their tax implications and how you can use them to construct your retirement solutions. This could include annuities, flexi access drawdown, uncrystallised fund pensions lump sums (UFPLUS) as well as other savings and investments or a combination of several products Freedom of choice has many implications if you get it wrong, for example, you could create a large tax bill that you could have avoided. Also, not all pension plans may have this freedom of choice so you many need to move your money to an environment that does. This could be a good thing to do but equally it could be bad. The value of investments and pensions and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. You can avoid getting it wrong by getting the correct advice. Try something new
It’s all too easy to get stuck in a beauty rut. If you fancy trying something new, book yourself in for a skin consultation or mini makeover at a cosmetics counter. Or visit a few counters and ask for their recommendations. (You may get given some free samples to try at home.) These are a popular snack with adults and children alike and are also a great energising boost before or after a workout – perfect as an afternoon pick-me-up or when you fancy a sweet treat. Make a batch of these and store them in the fridge or freezer. Preparation time: 10 minutes, plus chilling Cooking time: 2 minutes Makes: 20 Balls
1. Place the coconut oil and xylitol (or stevia) in a pan. Gently melt over a low heat, stirring to dissolve the sweetener. Allow to cool slightly, then tip into a food processor and add the nut butter. Process briefly until combined.
Ingredients • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted • 3 tbsp xylitol or 1–2 tsp granulated stevia • 220g nut butter (cashew, almond or peanut) • 4 tbsp coconut flour • 60g vegan vanilla or berry protein powder • 1 tsp acai or goji berry powder (optional) • 50g dried berries (cranberries, cherries etc.) • Desiccated coconut, to coat
2. Add the coconut flour, protein powder and acai or goji berry powder (if using), and blend again to form a stiff dough. If it seems too wet add a little more coconut flour or protein powder. The mixture should be firm but soft. Add the dried berries and pulse briefly, just to break them up slightly. 3. Tip some desiccated coconut onto a plate. Take small spoonfuls of the mixture and shape into walnut-sized balls, then roll them in the coconut until coated on all sides. 4. Chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes to firm up before eating. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 4-5 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

No experience of flower arranging needed to join, just an interest in seeing blooms displayed advantageously. Demonstrators visit most months but members also workshops and an annual garden visit. South Willesborough & Newtown (SWAN) Women’s Institute has been going strong for 35 years and our members come from all over Ashford not just South Willesborough and Newtown. We meet on the 1st Friday of each month in The SWAN Community Centre, Turner Close, Newtown at 7.30pm where we enjoy interesting speakers, workshops and have a friendly social time. Other activities include the Book Club, the Walking Group, the Darts teams, the Lunch and Gardening Clubs. We also hold a monthly Whist Drive at Baxendale. We hold 2 Jumble Sales each year and 2 Quizzes which are very well attended. Our Outings Sub Committee, with suggestions from our members, arranges interesting outings during the year for all our members to enjoy. For less than £2 per month you too can have an enjoyable evening making new friends, listening to talks on a variety of subjects and just relaxing in the company of other women. Everyone is made to feel welcome so come along one Friday and join us. Why not bring a friend? There is plenty of parking outside the Hall. A thriving Club open to all. Ladies of any age even if you live outside of the Willesborough area. We have interesting speakers, demonstrations and outings and there is plenty of time during the evening to socialise and catch up with friends. 7pm for 7.30pm start.
