Welcome Hi everyone, I hope you are all well, welcome to the Christmas / New Year edition.

This time last year I was buzzing, we had put Lockdown behind us, and I was ready to shop ‘till I dropped! I’ve since learned not to “count my chickens”, or in my case, turkeys. I have two in my freezer from last Christmas, and if it turns out to be just the three of us again, I’ll be searching the internet for imaginative things to do with a turkey (no comments on a postcard please!). On the positive side, there was plenty of Christmas Pudding to go round, and only two of us to eat it! I may have had a little more than I should!

Bearing that in mind I’ve decided to prepare for this Christmas by trimming down a little first.

Just last week I went on a long Sunday walk with my husband. He’s used to walking for miles, I’m not, so I was shattered as we walked down the lane next to our home. As I was considering how much I needed to put my feet up, I looked up to see a large, brown bull standing in the middle of the road, horns at the ready, blocking our way home! My husband told me to turn around and walk back the way we had come. I walked as fast as I could, thinking that running might not be a wise thing to do. Too scared to turn to look, I asked my husband if it was following us. He said “Yes, it’s running after us, run!”, I was so scared.

Two ladies on horseback behind us also turned back the other way. I was franticly looking for a gap in the hedge that we could climb through, but thankfully it gave up the chase. We then had to find footpaths across the fields to get to our home. It was a new first in my life, although I wouldn’t recommend it as a “tick-in-the-box” moment for anyone! I really do think I earned all the Christmas Pudding I can eat for this year!

If you have a little more time, a mixed hedge is just about the best you can offer wildlife.

Betula: there are 521 species of invertebrates that are known to feed on birch trees and more than 100 of these are exclusive to that particular type of tree.

Sorbus, the rowan tree: provides food for at least 160 species of insect and, of course, birds and small mammals love the berries.

Butterflies love hebes, sedum (Hylotelephium varieties), Verbena bonariensis, Origanum, Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, buddleia, scabious and many wild flowers such as knapweed.

Conifers: really are worth having! Some have earned negative press over the years but this doesn’t detract from their value to wildlife.

There’s probably no better tree for providing nesting sites and protection for a wide range of creatures.

Flowering shrubs and perennials: choose single flowers over double, every time. They have an open shape that allows access for the pollinators and nectar-drinkers. Look for yellow stamens within a flower; these will support insects.

Classic devices given a high-tech reboot We love our digital devices, our smart bulbs and our personal digital assistants. But sometimes we wish our various gadgets and gizmos had a bit more personality. In the future, few of us are likely to look back on our Amazon Echos with the nostalgia we have for the Sony Walkman, and digital timekeeping is never going to be as exciting as watching something pop out of a cuckoo clock. So we’re delighted to see some firms embracing modern technology with a distinctly retro twist.

Roberts is a great example of that. The £229 Revival iStream 3 looks like a proper old-school AM radio, complete with faux-leather covering and a distinctive golden grille. It’s beautiful and wonderfully old-fashioned, but it’s packed with the latest digital radio tech: it can play DAB radio and stream from the likes of Spotify and TIDAL. It even works with Alexa.

Vinyl has been making a comeback for some years now and there are some very retro-looking turntables available, but it might be sensible to stick with something less tacky, such as the Sony PS-LX310BT Bluetooth Turntable. This £194 turntable has proper hi-fi heritage, looks

like it was made in 1970 and streams wirelessly to compatible audio systems and smart speakers.

Romney Marsh Launches Dementia Friendly Forum In January 2020 Romney Marsh launched a new

Dementia Friendly Community Forum, making plans to support and work with those living with Dementia. . . . and we all know what happened next. . . . . The original plans have been on ice, but the interest and need has remained so the group seized the opportunity to reconvene, reconnect and move forward in their first formal meeting of 2021 at the Romney Marsh Community Support Hub. Julie Lawrence, Chair remarked on how great it was to welcome members back and reflected on the many changes that have taken place at a community and personal level for us all since we last met and felt that we were now able to restart the group in earnest.

The number one priority for the group is to provide a service for local people, run by local volunteers with support from KCC Community Teams, medical and social care professionals. Liz Taylor, Services Manager, Kent & East Sussex, Alzheimer’s Society, as a reminder to us all quoted “ A Dementia Friendly Community is a city, town, village where people with dementia are understood, respected and confident that they can contribute to community life. It is about bringing together local groups, individuals, and organisations to build and deliver action plans that will deliver real change in a community for people affected by dementia. Dementia friendly communities are vital in helping people live well with dementia and remain a part of their community. Too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with, its impact or how to interact with them. That’s why people with dementia sometimes feel they need to withdraw from their community as the condition progresses. THIS ISN’T OK. People affected by dementia still have an incredible amount to offer to their community. If appropriately supported they can continue to play an active and valuable role even years after diagnosis.”

There’s a lot of work to be done and the group are certainly up for the challenge. Liz also reminded us the former KCC Dementia Team have been relaunched as the Sustainable Communities Team, which includes silent disabilities and other illnesses.

The group explored several ideas . . . Plans include raising business awareness; Dementia Champions, who are able to offer a Dementia Friends Training programme to any groups, schools or clubs on Romney Marsh; creation of a support service for Carers and most importantly recruiting new members for the group especially those who live with Dementia daily and are able to give us valuable insight to take the group forward and meet their real needs.

Currently there are Dementia Cafes in Lydd and Greatstone; New Romney is re-opening on 8th November at The Old School and more are planned for Dymchurch, St Mary’s Bay and the Marsh villages, so watch this space, come along to a meeting, find out how you can get involved... The group is very keen to seek the involvement in the Forum of any interested groups/individuals who feel that they would be able to contribute to the work and plans of the Dementia Forum.

You might think looking at a price tag would be simple enough, but it’s not always as clear as it seems. When you see a special offer or a sales reduction, you have the right to certain information to help you make a informed decision about whether it’s good value.

The main law covering sales prices is the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations, which says any price promoted as a ‘sale’ or ‘special offer’ must also list the original price. Usually this should be the price charged immediately before the sale started.

The seller must have charged this price for a ‘meaningful’ period, usually at least as long as the sale lasts. This means shops can’t simply put a dress on sale for £200 for one day, then sell it at £50 and bill it as being 75% off.

One thing to watch out for is when the seller compares the sales price with a ‘recommended retail price’ (RRP). This is usually allowed as long as it’s clear this is the case, even when the seller concerned has never charged that price themselves.

VAT INCLUDED When sellers offer goods to consumers, they must always list prices including any VAT that applies. Sellers can only list prices excluding VAT when marketing directly to businesses and even then they must make it very clear they have done so. Listed prices must always include

any charge that is compulsory rather than an optional extra: for example, car dealers can’t add on a ‘hidden’ fee for number plates.

HAGGLING With all prices, there’s no legal reason you can’t offer a lower price. You have the same rights to haggle in Harrods as you do at a car-boot sale, though not always with the same likelihood of succeeding!

If you negotiate a discount, you still have the same consumer rights to return a faulty product or one that’s not as advertised. The seller might exclude the deal from their normal returns policies if you change your mind, though they’ll need to agree this with you before you buy.

DISTANCE SELLING Whatever price you pay, whether ‘on sale’ or not, your consumer rights are unaffected.

You still have a legal right to a refund if goods are faulty, not as described or not fit for their stated purpose. You can also ask for a repair or replacement, but that’s entirely your choice.

The only exception is if the price reduction was because of a flaw the seller told you about, such as a scuff mark or missing instructions.

Where sales can come into play is the retailer’s own policies that go beyond your legal rights.

Many sellers will offer you store credit or a refund when the goods are fine and you’ve simply changed your mind. Sellers can exclude sale goods from this policy, though they should make this clear in advance.

Inspired by Explorer Oakley, the Cubs built their own Bug Hotel and signs show the bugs have moved in. Plans are in the pipeline to rewild the area adjacent to the hotel and create a Wildflower garden.

Meanwhile Scout Leader Chris, also a member of Litter Picking Watch Romney Marsh, worked with the Cubs to deliver a session on Litter.

The clear message is we should all learn to Love Where we Live. We are all responsible for our environment so take your litter home!!

Nobody should be dropping Litter. Inspired by the Session Cub Mia went on her own Litter Pick.

Her Nan, Mandy comments: ‘My granddaughter goes to New Romney Cub Scouts and this past week they have had to do work sheets about the environment. One of the tasks was to do a litter pick. So this morning we walked from the new builds in St Mary's Bay to The Springs. Not a lot on the tide line except bits of plastic, a lighter, a deflated balloon and lots of string/ nylon netting. We also found a fish skeleton and a stone with a face on.’ Well done and thank you Mia. It’s so important to keep the Oceans clean. Pollution makes life very difficult and sometimes fatal for Sealife so please, please think about the litter you are dropping.

Keeping the theme Love Where we Live, some of the Cubs volunteered with New Romney in Bloom. In a Facebook Post, Paul the organiser stated ‘In just one hour this morning, 3 cubs (Ben, Jack and Daniel) and their Leader (Janet) from the Mulberry Cub Pack, planted over 400 spring bulbs, what a fantastic achievement. The cubs have surely earned considerable points towards their Community and Environmental Badges! The NRIB Committee are very grateful for their involvement, it was a fun time for all. We look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour next spring". Well done and thank you Daniel, Ben & Jack. Keep a lookout on the corner of Lydd Road and Church Lane next Spring for the colourful spring flowers.

These are a popular snack with adults and children alike and are also a great energising boost before or after a workout – perfect as an afternoon pick-me-up or when you fancy a sweet treat. Make a batch of these and store them in the fridge or freezer.

Preparation time: 10 minutes, plus chilling Cooking time: 2 minutes Makes: 20 Balls

1. Place the coconut oil and xylitol (or stevia) in a pan. Gently melt over a low heat, stirring to dissolve the sweetener. Allow to cool slightly, then tip into a food processor and add the nut butter.

Process briefly until combined.

Ingredients • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted • 3 tbsp xylitol or 1–2 tsp granulated stevia • 220g nut butter (cashew, almond or peanut) • 4 tbsp coconut flour • 60g vegan vanilla or berry protein powder • 1 tsp acai or goji berry powder (optional) • 50g dried berries (cranberries, cherries etc.)

• Desiccated coconut, to coat

2. Add the coconut flour, protein powder and acai or goji berry powder (if using), and blend again to form a stiff dough. If it seems too wet add a little more coconut flour or protein powder. The mixture should be firm but soft. Add the dried berries and pulse briefly, just to break them up slightly.

3. Tip some desiccated coconut onto a plate. Take small spoonfuls of the mixture and shape into walnut-sized balls, then roll them in the coconut until coated on all sides.

4. Chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes to firm up before eating.

Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 4-5 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
