Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, I must start my intro this month with an apology for July’s crossword puzzle. The supplier notified me of an error, but too late for me to make any changes, the magazines had already gone to print and there was nothing I could do. As you can imagine, with 37,000 magazines being delivered, my email and telephone line have been hot with readers finding the “Simple Crossword not so simple! Most were good humoured and understanding, asking if it was April 1st! Unfortunately, I’m disappointed to say, one or two were rather curt and less understanding, but I suppose that’s life, we are not all the same. Life is not perfect and things go wrong now and then, especially, it seems, when running six magazines from the bottom of your garden (as I do), but I look on it as an opportunity to learn. I bet it really challenged your brains for a while though

didn’t it! Normal service has now resumed so I hope you enjoy this month’s crossword. July was certainly a challenge for me, my smartphone app, which I so proudly announced in the magazine, incurred a delay. The approval of the app by Apple was delayed, and without Apple approval I could not go live, even with the Android version. Hopefully by the time you read this the problem will be resolved and the app available for free download by anyone with a smartphone. Have a great month!

After perusing over the last few months columns
delphiniums along with tall elegant Ht roses and climbers. Instead they have been blown over by the gales that keep hitting us in this SE corner. My selenium, (potato plant), was so badly hit that it looked like I had held a wedding in the garden. All the blossom was blown off and lay forlornly on the ground. I have never known it before but even the clematis got wind burn!! Such a shame. I can honestly say that this peculiar weather has put my garden back by approximately three weeks. Not a raspberry or spring onion ready, not even a lilly out in bloom. Browsing round to find a few entries for the Summer Show that had no damage was like looking for hens teeth! I concluded that if I picked the few items that I had in the garden that was undamaged, I wouldn’t have a garden left at all! So at the end of the day I opted out of the fruit, veg and flowers and entered all the cookery classes instead. I did re-sow my lost seeds, including the runner beans which had completely rotted in the ground, but it is looking rather dodgy as to how much will come through. All fingers are crossed.
that I have written I realise just how much I have mentioned the weather, it must be an English trait that talking about the weather plays such a huge part in our lives, so who am I to change things. The weather continues to be rather strange, but its been On a lighter note – at long last the top pergola the terrible winds that have devastated the garden. is finished, and it looks really lovely. the garden it some extra special effort to get it finished as I had two clematis that my lovely neighbour had given me as a gift to plant and their going to be trained up and over the pergola. I must admit I do admire it when I go up the garden as it looks almost Japanese. Now I must gingerly unravel the climbing rose from the arch and start to train it over the pergola. I have only one whinge and that is that pigeons have already moved in and are using it as a roost. Imagine the mess they are making on the patio. Mind you the rose has huge thorns, perhaps they won’t appreciate a few spikes up their bottoms and maybe that will deter them!
Now in the greenhouse things are going well. The
picnic cucumbers are really producing well and from the two plants that I have, I have six cucumbers ready. I can really recommend giving these a go, especially if there is only two of you. One cucumber would be more than enough for a nice salad or sandwich. Good job I have plenty of people who like cucumbers. The tomatoes have flowers but as yet no fruit, they are looking good and I have high hopes for a bumper crop. But the sweet pepper
just sits there unmoving, not a flower in sight. We shall wait and see on that one.
Well
now to report back on “those” lettuce. What a waste of money. I am now down to three seedlings and they are really being nurtured. Its been ages since they went in and I have cropped a whole tub of Little Gem since. Needless to say I shan’t buy those again. And as for the basket tomatoes, they are growing……slowly. Normally by now I would be picking the odd one or two, again a bad buy. Once more I remind myself to stick to what varieties I know and trust. Will I ever learn? Trouble is the seed companies make them sound so exciting and different that you want to have a go, and I’m sure its not just me is it?
Coffee time and today I have hubbys company, that is after he’s finished mowing the lawn. Because of the show I have some amazing cheese straws and shortbread that needs eating, both his favourites. Best I grab mine now before he comes in!

Home-Made Burgers 1. Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince.
10
2. Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like. You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too. 3. A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together or use clean hands to mix as thoroughly as possible. 4. Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wetted hands. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked. 5. Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the middle. To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes. 6. If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw. 7. Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.
All You Need To Know! It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious home-made char-grilled burgers. Creating Space Are you feeling cluttered, chaotic and claustrophobic at home? Katherine Sorrell offers six quick and easy tips to help create more space
16
Step One: Clear out that clutter It’s boring but simple: sort through your stuff. All your stuff. Unless you’re absolutely certain you want to keep it where it is, then put it into boxes or bags marked for rubbish, recycling, giving away, mending or storing elsewhere. If it’s too painful to do this all at once, aim for one room per week, or else do ten minutes a day – then make a habit of keeping on top of it, with regular sortouts. You’ll be amazed how much extra space you find when your house is no longer crammed full of unnecessary clutter. Step Two: Create super-efficient storage Every nook and cranny around your home can be used to store your possessions in a neat and organised fashion. Built-in cupboards make the most of space, as they can be made to fit into the most awkward of corners, and stretched right to the ceiling for maximum capacity. Paint them the same colour as the walls and they will blend in brilliantly. On the other hand, off-theshelf storage tends to be cheaper, more flexible and whether it’s a vintage French armoire or a cheap coloured plastic bucket, can be tailored to suit your style and budget. Step Three: Lighten up Start by ensuring that your windows are brilliantly clean, that curtains or blinds don’t block them, and that furniture is

placed in just the right spots to make the most of natural light. As for artificial lighting, bear in mind that the traditional central pendant, used on its own, creates gloomy corners and offers no atmosphere. Instead, think about employing a more interesting combination of different types of lighting for flexibility, comfort and interest. For a quick upgrade on a budget, simply replace main light switches with dimmers, and plug in a selection of table or floor lamps at key points, to layer the lighting and emphasise special features. Step Four: Be flexible with furniture When you have run out of space, it makes sense to take a long, hard look at your furniture and make sure that every single piece is worth its place in your home. Simple, slender styles have the least impact in a small space, while pale or transparent pieces blend into the background, and anything raised on legs will make your room seem larger (because there is more visible floor area). In general, avoid deep upholstery, bulky outlines and fussy detailing. Special foldaway or compact furniture can help – but don’t sacrifice comfort or function – and with a touch of lateral thinking you can turn ordinary
the home furnishings into dual-purpose ones, such as a chest of drawers that doubles as a bedside table or a coffee table that includes space to store magazines. Step Five: Add glass and mirrors With a little thought and not too much expense, simply hanging a mirror can create the illusion of space where it does not exist and double the apparent size of a room. One positioned opposite a window will distribute the maximum amount of natural light; near a light fitting, a mirror will reflect its brilliance around the room. Glass, too, provides vistas from room to room or from inside to out, really opening up a home. If you are having building work done, consider glass walls, floors or even stairs, but for quicker, cheaper solutions you could opt for glass doors, glass or acrylic furniture or see-through accessories such as lamp bases, door knobs and vases. Step Six: Use clever colour Colour can manipulate our sense of space enormously. Pale colours seem to recede, enhancing a sense of spaciousness, while darker colours absorb light and therefore appear more enclosing. Colours on the ‘cool’ spectrum, such as blue and green, are more distancing than ‘warm’ colours such as red and yellow. Whites, off-whites and cool pastels are, therefore, perfect for making small spaces seem larger – and they look sophisticated and contemporary, too, especially when combined with the natural textures of materials such as timber and stone.
A 50/50 blind gives you privacy while allowing light to flood through the top half of a window. From £146 for a 1,200mm x 1,200mm 50/50 blind, Clarkes Blinds & Curtains, 01252 544 568; www.blindsandcurtains.biz. by Katherine Sorrell

A Proverbial Life... Recently I had the pleasure of attending a local lunch and, for my sins, giving a short talk about my working life. Nothing unusual in that you may think. However, it was one of the most enjoyable and thought provoking experiences I’ve had for a long time. As it turned out I was the only female amongst a group of approximately forty men, the majority of whom were retired and with an average age of approximately seventy - many a deal older. To a man they were suited and booted to perfection; their dark suits or blazers worn with an upright bearing and unconscious pride. Each suit immaculately pressed, every shirt crisply ironed, all ties neatly knotted, proper handkerchiefs tucked into breast pockets and the shoes, polished and buffed to a high sheen with not a trainer or casual loafer in sight. They looked magnificent. Similar attention had also been paid to their personal grooming. There wasn’t a hint of designer stubble gracing any chin or cheeks; those who sported beards or moustaches had taken care to trim and comb them into neatness. Each man had a ‘proper’ haircut and there was evidence of the judicious use of hair creams and oils. There was the most wonderful whiff of plain soap, and the faintest hint of aftershave; nothing floral or light but strong spicy and masculine. Jewellery was discrete: a wedding band, single signet ring, tie pin or chunky cufflinks at wrists. No gold chains, bracelets or similar paraphernalia were on display – if they owned such items they had either tucked them out of sight or left them at home. The only earrings I spotted were worn by the waitresses. I did, however, spot several copper bands; worn no doubt for medicinal purposes. They greeted me with firm handshakes, offers of refreshments, gentle teasing and oh so subtle flirting. They stood when I entered the room and when I left the table. They spoke of their wives, children and grandchildren. Photos were proudly whipped from wallets and passed around to be admired and discussed. In short they were totally charming and lovely.
Clothes (and manners) maketh the man It may be that they weren’t all solely responsible for their dapper appearance. Perhaps a wife or partner had ironed the crisp shirts, or pressed the wrinkle free suits – no matter, the overall effect was that standards had been met. On the way home I stopped to buy some stamps. In the queue in front of me was a good looking teenage boy. Jeans slung artfully half way down his buttocks, displayed six inches of bright red, silk boxer shorts. His hair had been teased and combed into a soft fluffy halo, with a long floppy fringe that fell over one eye. On his wrists were countless plaited thread bracelets; brightly coloured plastic strands circled his neck. He was rocking gently to the music plugged into his ears and eating from a large bag of sweets. He smelt wonderful and looked rather beautiful.
I had to give him a gentle nudge and point out that he was next to be served. He turned, smiled, offered a sweet from the bag and stood to one side: “Ladies first.” I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he was the grandson of one of my ‘gents’ from lunch.
