Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, I hope you’re enjoying the wonderful weather, the magazine can be a real challenge though when the office turns into a sauna at deadline time. Luckily I don’t overlook the sea, so there’s no likelihood of me suddenly making a dash for a cooling dip, like my husband did last month! By the way, one reader said that she had to look twice, apparently his cream trousers gave the impression that he was “starkers”, she did make me laugh! You have to feel sorry for my family, if they do anything noteworthy the whole borough is likely to find out about it! I had a call from a very nice gentleman in the Woodchurch area the other day. He is faily new to the area and was struggling to locate local B&B accomodation for his visiting family. Unfortunately I was unable to help him but it made me think. If enough B&B’s are interested in listing their businesses in the magazine I would be happy to set up a dedicated section. So if you run a B&B and are interested do get in touch, if it’s viable I will get too work on it right away. If you would like to see any specific items included in the magazine do get in touch with your ideas, or if there is a particular type of business that you struggle to find, let me know and I will attempt to track it down for you. Have a great month ~ Debbie e: info@thevillagedirectory.co.uk w: www.thevillagedirectory.co.uk T: 01233 720488

Hot Favourites by Pippa Greenwood

Lychnis chalcedonica

4

Our summer weather isn’t usually unbearably warm; in fact it is often pretty cool and a little bit of extra heat would be very welcome. With a little bit of planning and some careful planting, you could turn your garden into the hottest site out, regardless of the real weather. You can plant to create a mass of hot colours. All you have to do is plant beds, borders or containers full of hot reds, screaming yellows and glowing oranges. True, most of the planting is best done in the autumn, but a visit to a garden centre at this time of year will reveal a fabulous display of plants which can be put to good use in your garden now.

• If it’s a hot day, try to plant in early evening or at least late afternoon when the main heat of the sun has died down.

For real energy and vibrancy, choose plenty of yellows and golds, including some of the golden rods (Solidago), which should be flowering well into September.

• Once the plants are in position, water them in thoroughly - the water needs to go right down to where the plant needs it, at its roots.

I am a great fan of coreopsis, including the various forms of Coreopsis verticillata, which flowers well into the autumn and is unlikely to need staking. If you like to see flat looking flower heads in your garden then take a closer peep at some of the achilleas, including ‘Coronation Gold’. No late summer border is complete without the cone flowers or rudbekias with their deliciously bright, daisy-like flowers - these should last you through October. For some screaming scarlets and other shades of red, consider growing the dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff ’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Lychnis chalcedonica.

• Always make sure that plants are really well watered before you put them in the ground. • Soak the compost thoroughly and make sure that it’s wetted right to the base before you begin. • Incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter, such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or some proprietary compost from your garden centre, as this will help to retain moisture.

• Once the soil is moist, apply a good, deep mulch of 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm), all around the soil surface. This will help to keep moisture in, protect the plant roots from the heat of the sun and at the same time keep weeds at bay. Don’t forget to tend to your hot border again in the autumn, when you will find small versions of many of these plants readily available in garden centres, often at only a couple of pounds per pot and when you will also be able to plant some more warming oranges and reds using bulbs and corms. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September planting and regular advice emails from Pippa. Buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh and Envirofleece.

In damper areas you could use Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’ or many of the other moisture-loving types of lobelia which produce huge spires of red flowers, so different from those tiny blue, pink and white bedding lobelias which are more widely grown. Fast Affordable Builders

although Ebony has also done her fair share of this. Not that she ever gets caught the little sneak and I get the blame for the piles of fluff she has produced. Anyway, despite the fact that I am often in trouble it is a very fine feeling to have a room in which I can be completely camouflaged.

Mowgli

8

Hello Eveyone, Mowgli here. How are all of you? Ebony and I are quite excited this month as at last Clive and Jane have bought a rug and we have a comfortable surface to roll on! Humans are so silly- why do they like all this awful wooden flooring? Do they not realise that it is grossly unfair on us cats who then have to sit on hard surfaces in drafts? Anyway, Jane has finally got around to buying furniture for the small sitting room off the kitchen. This is good in a number of ways. The first good thing is the colour scheme. None of you will be surprised to hear it is based on me- beige, brown and cream with a few bits of bright blue to represent my eyes. This has made me very happy as no matter how much everyone likes Joshua I am sure no-one will ever have a colour scheme based on a baby! The second good thing is the sofa and chairs- very comfortable and soft (beigelike my tummy- with brown and cream striped cushions- like my back- if anyone is interested....). I tell you, they are heaven to sink your claws into and rip. This of course has not been popular. Clive has pointed out to me (at length) that the reason the sofas in the other room are leather is because I am a bad cat and cannot be trusted not to ruin things. He has told me that if I keep ripping the new sofas they will be taken away and get something uncomfortable that I have no interest in ripping. He is such a spoil sport! The third good thing is the rug- heavenly to sit on, roll on, and of course to sharpen my claws on. Not popular again of course

I also wanted to update you all on Saska the squirrel. She eventually broke both our bird feeders. Clive and Jane then engineered a squirrel proof feeder. We were all pleased when this baffled her and thought we had won. But the draw of all those seeds to eat was too much and she obviously spent a lot of time and energy plotting. This week she was back and launched a cleverly thought out attack on

the home the new feeder. She had emptied all the seeds out of it in a number of minutes. The feeder has now been reinforced in a rather crazy way with bits of string and plastic milk bottle (don’t ask) and Ebony and I are back on sentry duty at the window. We’ll see what she has managed to do by next month!

but they are all now making an appearance. The Clinic has had a lot of wildlife babies in- a baby owl, fox cubs, several baby birds. Let’s hope they all do well and can soon enjoy the sunshine like the rest of us!

Seasonal Delights Peach Melba Shortcakes Serves 4

Serves 8

Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling These shortcakes are perfect for a speedy summer dessert. They take just minutes to make and bake and can be filled with whatever seasonal fruit you have to hand. Here they are filled with a rich and sweet mascarpone cream with juicy peaches and fresh raspberries but a simple dollop of extra thick cream and some sliced strawberries will be just as impressive.

12

Ingredients: • • • •

175g self-raising flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 75g butter, chilled and diced 55g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 large egg, beaten • 1 tbsp milk

Filling • • • • •

125g mascarpone cheese 2 tbsp icing sugar 6 tbsp single cream 175g fresh raspberries 2 ripe peaches, stoned and sliced

Tip The shortcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container. Fill with the cream and fruit 1-2 hours before serving.

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then add the beaten egg and milk and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and roll out to a 1cm thickness. Using an 8cm round cookie cutter stamp out 8 rounds, gently re-rolling the trimmings as necessary. Place on the prepared baking sheet, prick the top of each round lightly with a fork then sprinkle with a little caster sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and pale golden. Carefully transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. To make the filling, beat the mascarpone cheese with the icing sugar and cream until smooth. Push half the raspberries through a fine-holed sieve to make a puree. Slice each shortcake in half horizontally and top the bottom halves with the cream mixture, peach slices and remaining raspberries. Drizzle over the raspberry puree and top with remaining shortcake halves.

The Military Wives Choir Join The Farriers Arms Fabulous 40’s/50’s Weekend 14

On Saturday 3rd August The Millitary Wives Choir - Shorncliffe are to perform in Mersham at the Farriers Arms “Fabulous 40’s/50’s Weekend” . As you’ll see from our inside cover, it promises to be a weekend packed with entertainment, an event you definitely do not want to miss. The Military Wives Choir (MWC) Shorncliffe was formed in April 2012 by former MWC Salisbury Plain member Dyane McGarry, who returned to her home town of Folkestone with her family as her husband’s military career drew to a close. The choir at Shorncliffe began with a relatively modest number of ladies, and although the membership base steadily increased throughout the first year, the campaign to encourage more wives and girlfriends to join them remains steadfast and ongoing. The choir has been extremely fortunate in engaging the services of superb Musical Director Brian Cunningham, a former Bandmaster to The Queens Regiment, whose wealth of experience and expertise has instilled in them the confidence and direction necessary to reach their potential. Although only in their second year phase, the choir has already enjoyed considerable success and recognition throughout the Southeast region, performing at many military, civic and

charity events. They were also involved in the production and promotion of the album Stronger Together which was released in November 2012. The formation of the Military Wives Choirs began initially after a BBC TV Documentary series in 2011, hosted by choir master Gareth Malone. Gareth visited Chivenor Barracks in Devon, with the intent purpose of encouraging the wives/ partners and girlfriends of serving military personnel to sing together as a choir. This culminated in the women identifying mutual feelings of isolation and loneliness, and the void left in their lives when separated from their menfolk during the extended periods of training and deployment. The choir presented them with an interest, a purpose, a social and support network , and ultimately – a voice. Since that very special TV programme – which gave the country an insight into the stark realities of military life from the view of a military spouse – choirs have developed across the UK at an incredible rate, and have now reached military bases abroad too. Furthermore, membership has been extended to other women with strong military connections, which again, has increased the ‘common bond’ within military communities. The Military Wives Choir –Shorncliffe is now one of those very special units which has captured the country’s heart, by their ongoing crusade to raise the profile of their ‘men at arms’ through their singing and fundraising activities, They are a true ‘sister act’ Their story continues.

Misconceptions About Wills Rosalind Johnson, Senior Partner

As part of our regular series on legal matters, Rosalind Johnson of Tenterden law firm Pengelly & Rylands looks at common misconceptions about Wills. Q Can an Executor benefit under a Will? A Yes, an Executor can benefit from a Will but they or their spouse or civil partner must not be one of the two witnesses when the person making the Will signs it. Q My family know what I want, do I need a Will? A Without a Will, your family will lack the power to make important decisions. They will be bound by what the law dictates about such things as how to administer your affairs, who will get your assets, when they will get them and who will have legal authority to look after your children.

20

Q My family is very close, they won’t argue over money. Do I need to be specific in my Will? A In these austere times, more and more families are contesting Wills. Grief and money are not a good combination and will bring out strong emotions. The clearer you are about how you want your affairs handled after your death, the less chance there should be for costs of litigation and disputes which can destroy family relationships (and see the estate swallowed up in legal costs). Q Will all my assets pass under my Will? A No. Assets which are in joint names such as bank accounts automatically pass to the joint owner on the first death, even though they may have made no contribution to the money in the account. Accounts are sometimes put into joint names for practical reasons, e.g. an elderly parent and an adult child. Although the account may pass automatically to the child, the share provided by the parent will be added to the parent’s estate in calculating if any tax is due. Q Is a homemade Will kit enough? A In many cases, homemade Wills create more work for lawyers but are not good for beneficiaries who could wait many months or even years to receive their entitlement. Q Does having a Will avoid probate? A No. A Will is the primary tool of the probate system. A Will is like a letter to the Probate Court telling it how you

want your property distributed and who is to deal with it – your Executors. In small estates, or when assets are held jointly, it is not always necessary to apply for probate. It very much depends on individual circumstances. Q Does my Will and the gross net value of my assets remain private? A No, once probate is granted, a Will becomes a public record. This means nosey friends or neighbours can apply to the Probate Registry for a copy of your Will to know the size of your estate and who benefits. The only people whose Wills cannot be made public are the Royal Family! Q With no Will, does my property go to the state? A No. Without a Will, you will die intestate and the intestacy rules say who will receive your assets. So called “common law”, husbands and wives have no entitlement and if they need provision from your estate for a child of the relationship, or themselves, they would have to apply to the Court to decide what, if anything, was “fair and reasonable” provision. There is a limited time without the Court’s consent to bring any claim. For more information, or to discuss Wills generally, please contact Rosalind Johnson or Gill Snow at Pengelly & Rylands on 01580 762248.

Kaleidoscope Childcare is a charity providing a pre-school, breakfast club and an after school club on Aldington Primary School site. Our pre-school is open from 9am to 3 pm during school term time. We have two separate rooms, one for 2 to 3 year olds and the other for 3 to 4 year olds. These enable us to provide a wide and diverse range of activities meeting the individual needs of each age group in stimulating environments. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which ensures that we cover all areas of learning, doing so in a fun and exciting way using both indoor and outdoor areas. At present, the children are particularly enjoying the mud kitchen in the garden using pots, pans and utensils with natural items. This has proved to be lovely, sensory but messy play! Our breakfast club is open from 8am for children aged 2 to 11 years. It is a chance for children to have breakfast and enjoy time with their friends before school or pre-school. The after school club starts at 3pm and is open until 6pm. Fees are charged at an hourly rate. We provide a cooked tea (optional) from a healthy menu. The varying age range creates a lovely family atmosphere with the older children helping the younger ones and playing games with them. We are able to accept Free for 2 funding, the Nursery Education Grant and work place childcare vouchers. Kaleidoscope Childcare provides an invaluable service to the community and we have gone from strength to strength. Many of the staff

have been members of our friendly team for many years providing consistency for families. You are welcome to come and see us. Please call 01233 721720 to arrange a visit.

wit & wisdom

The other night I was invited out for a night with the ‘girls.’ I told my husband that I would be home by midnight , ‘I promise!’ Well, the hours passed and the Margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed three times.

The next morning, my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him ‘ MIDNIGHT .’ He didn’t seem annoyed in the least. Phew, I got away with that one! Then he said ‘We need a new cuckoo clock.’ When I asked him why, he said, ‘Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times... then said, ‘oh, crap...

Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him! (Even when totally smashed... three cuckoos plus nine cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos-- MIDNIGHT !)

Del & Peeps Peeps urgently needed a few days off work, but knew the boss wouldn’t allow any leave. So he thought “maybe if I acted “Crazy” the boss would tell me to take a few days off”. So he proceeded to hang upside-down from the ceiling and made funny noises. His co-worker, Del, asked him what he was doing, he said “ I’m pretending to be a light bulb, so that the boss thinks I‘ve gone “Crazy” and gives me a few days off. A few minutes later the boss came into the office. “What on earth are you doing?” he said to Peeps. Peeps said “I’m a light bulb”. The boss said, “You’re clearly stressed out, go home and recuperate for a couple of days.” Peeps jumped down and walked out of the office.... But when Del followed him the boss said “...And where do you think you’re going?!” Del said, “I’m going home too. I can’t work in the dark..”
