Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the August edition. I hope you’re having a wonderful summer. The weather has been fantastic this year, I just hope it will last, at least until the end of the month.
School stops for summer, learning doesn’t have to
August is my favorite month of the year, it is the month in which I was born, so I have many memories of celebrating birthdays in the summer sun. Hopefully this year will be equally as enjoyable, as we will be dusting down the BBQ and bringing the whole family together for a drink or two. There’s never a dull moment when my brother is around, I’m sure that those of you that have met him through his work (Derek Hales the Tiler), will understand why. He’s a cheeky chappie, to say the least!
Kumon’s maths and English study programmes work throughout the summer to ensure your child is constantly learning and developing their ability. To unlock your child’s potential, contact your local Instructor for a free assessment. Ashford North 01233 664190 Ashford, Park Farm 01233 885920

As I’ve mentioned before, running a magazine certainly highlights the passing of time, it sometimes feels like I’m continually on a deadline. It’s hard to believe that The Village Directory is now 12 years old. It was such hard work in the early days that I hardly left my desk. For the sake of my sanity my husband used to have to drag me from the office out into the sunshine. We would take the dog for a walk along the seafront in Sandgate, it was such a tonic. Sometimes it’s hard to accept that you need to take a break, but when you do it feels like an immense weight has lifted from your shoulders and you feel able to return to the job with a fresh perspective. Deadlines are still tough but with my young helper, Sam, it’s nothing like it used to be.

The Garden with algae.
It’s Not Always Good To Be Green by Pippa Greenwood
Water is great in a garden and whether you have a large pond, a formal pool, a miniature pond in a half barrel or a selfcontained fountain or other water feature, the chances are that from time to time you will have been frustrated by the fact that the water turns green: the so-called ‘pea-soup’ effect! Generally, this will be due to one of many different types of algae infestation, and this problem tends to get much worse during warmer weather. Sometimes it completely ruins the appearance of the water feature and on other occasions it is just a passing phase, but what should you do about it? Blanket weed is so called because the long filaments of algae tangle up together, making a mass that resembles a dense green blanket. The easiest way to remove this once it has taken hold is to simply pull or rake it out. Over large areas a rake is worthwhile, providing you can avoid bringing the pond plants with it. Alternatively, use a stick or bamboo cane that you twirl into the mass of algae (rather
4
as you would load spaghetti onto a fork) and then compost it down in your compost bin. Surface floating pond weeds such as duckweed, which looks like lots of very tiny oval leaves floating on the water’s surface, can be a real nightmare too. Sometimes it is impossible to work out how it got there, but I think it is often brought in on new plants or simply on the feet of birds or other creatures as they come to the pond to drink. It builds up very rapidly, soon forming a bright green layer on the surface and the best control for this is to regularly scrape the weed off using a good-sized kitchen sieve. Again it can be composted, but do make sure that you remove every scrap of it from your pond or it will soon be back. Where possible, try to avoid the build-up of algae by creating your pond carefully and taking precautions with what you grow and keep in it. Avoid making a new pond in a very sunny position, as lots of sunlight increases the algal growth and makes
the problem worse. Bear in mind, however, that a pond situated too close to a large tree will soon become clogged by leaves over the autumn months! You should also make sure that the pond is as deep as possible: shallow water is much more inclined to develop algal problems than a pond which has deeper water. If you want fish that’s fine, but avoid putting too many fish in a pond as their excreta raises the nitrogen level in the water and this encourages algae. It really helps if you grow plenty of surface floating plants – water lilies are a wonderful solution, as they help to shade the water’s surface and so are particularly useful if the pond is in a fairly sunny site.
Installing something which moves the water around, such as a spout or fountain, will help to reduce the amount of algae because it also oxygenates the water, but do bear in mind that water lilies do not like water that is in motion. It is important not to give up on a pond too quickly – if you keep changing the water in an attempt to keep it clear, the pond never gets the chances to create its own natural balance and the situation will not get better. Try to be patient and usually, provided you try all the above, the pond will eventually sort itself out and you can enjoy seeing clear water again. You can consider using various proprietary physical and chemical controls for algae, but
always make sure that the one you have chosen is suitable for your size and type of pond and that it can be used safely where wildlife or your pond fish are living.
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown garden-ready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.
The much-loved method of using barley straw to clear algae in ponds does work, but it is essential that you have straw taken from barley and no other cereal crop. If you can get hold of this, cram some of it into something like an old pair of tights and submerge in the water by weighing them down with several bricks. Alternatively, you can buy pads of barley straw, in some instances Handy in Your Home mixed with 99 Plumbing Maintenance Services lavender stalks, 99 Decorating Any niggle job, none too small 99 Gardening and these will Call Gary help to do the 99 Carpentry 07798 734 471 99 Tiling job for you.
I’d also suggest that with a new or existing pond, you go down to your local garden centre or pond plant supplier and ask for a selection of oxygenating plants. Some of these float in bundles in the water, others can be grown in containers, and all of them help to raise the level of oxygen in the pond and so decrease the problem

We’re here to help children and adults with Type 1 diabetes whose pet dogs have the potential to become a diabetic alert dog. Certain dogs have such sensitive noses that they can be trained to detect dangerous changes their owners’ blood sugars. By alerting their owners or their families to these changes in blood sugars, diabetic alert dogs can prevent potentially life-threatening hypoglycaemic attacks. These are known as hypos and result from low blood sugar levels. Diabetic alert dogs can also detect potential episodes of hyperglycaemia (known as hypers) when blood sugar levels are too high. Training pet dogs to develop life-saving skills The Hypo Hounds training programme is for dog owners with brittle Type 1 diabetes.

Home & Interiors Eco Chic at Home
Being an eco-warrior doesn’t have to be a battle. With just a little thought and effort, you can decorate your home beautifully without harming the planet. Can ‘going green’ ever be stylish? Of course! While you might start with some basics, such as switching to LED light bulbs, insulating your loft or lagging your boiler, the end of your journey could be a chic, sophisticated home that’s filled with furnishings that are natural, sustainable and durable – in other words, minimising harm to the planet. From floors to ceilings, fabrics to accessories, small changes in your choices can create big eco-transformations.
10
First, think about your priorities - because there are plenty of different ways to help the environment. Should you aim to be low carbon, non-toxic or energy efficient? Renewable, fair

trade, locally sourced, organic or simply ‘natural’? The answer is not always obvious (and you will need to try very hard to satisfy every criteria) but some simple research will help you weigh up your options. Look out for labels, such as FSC to show that timber has been responsibly sourced, or Goodweave that tells you that a rug has not been woven by a child. Ask where things come from, what they contain, how they have been made. Buy from a specialist retailer who can demonstrate their green credentials, look out for reclaimed, recycled or upcycled products, or buy antique or vintage pieces – they are often very well made, can be breathtakingly good-looking and are certainly long-lasting; many would argue that they are the greenest of all, being the ultimate in recycling. Try to think less about all the
things you think you need, and ask yourself instead what you really don’t need. The three rules of green living are, first, to reduce what you use; second, to reuse what you can; and third, to recycle as much as possible. So, rather than getting rid of things carelessly, consider how you could adapt them and give them another life. Perhaps you could re-cover that comfortable, perfectly sized old sofa instead of buying a new one, clad the top of an old table with a thin sheet of marble, or repaint a boring kitchen chair with a special effect, for example. When you do buy new, you may want to support local artisans or businesses (reducing your carbon footprint in terms of import miles, too), or fair trade, co-operative or social initiatives overseas, which ensure fair pay and conditions for their workers. And it is well worth investigating eco choices for virtually everything around the house – from natural floorings such as sisal, cork, Marmoleum or wool carpets, to alternatives to cotton (which uses huge amounts of fresh water and pesticides) such as linen, hemp and alpaca. How much harm does a product cause to the environment during its production, and what toxins does it contain? Chemicals in paint, fabrics, synthetic carpets, plywood furniture and other man-made materials may ‘off gas’ for years, doing no one much good – another excellent reason to check the labelling.
Lastly, always bear in mind the beauty of natural materials, from oak and slate to bamboo and linen, in terms of both colour and texture. Subtle shades of browns, greys and off-whites, and tactile appeal that ranges from super-soft to satisfyingly knobbly – everything works together without your having to try too hard, and they will age gracefully, too, adding gentle good looks to your home for a long time to come.

What the labels mean FSC The Forest Stewardship Council logo on wood products shows they have been produced from responsibly grown timber. Goodweave The label is an assurance that no child labour was used in the making of your rug. C2C Cradle to Cradle certification is a detailed appraisal of products throughout their life cycle. Low VOC Low in potentially hazardous emissions called volatile organic compounds (most often found on paint tins). EU Eco-label A flower symbol that can be used by goods and services which have a lighter environmental footprint than similar products performing the same function. Fairtrade The Fairtrade Mark is awarded to products that meet international Fairtrade standards, including meeting the welfare of employers and environmental standards. The Mobius Loop The symbol showing three arrows chasing each other in a triangle shape is an internationally recognised recycling symbol. Energy Efficiency The Energy Efficiency logo identifies produces which save or use less energy.

Lazy Days Whether you’re stretching out on a sun lounger, or just grabbing an hour’s peace and quiet in your garden, a good book is a summer essential in our opinion. Standard Deviation – Katherine Heiny Graham’s second wife, Audra, is warm, sociable and always ready to throw herself headlong into any situation. The total opposite of his first wife, Elspeth, in fact. So when Elspeth unexpectedly comes back into Graham’s life, he finds himself wondering how on earth he could have fallen in love with two such different women, and whether he’s ended up with the right one. If you like quirky characters, wry humour and reflections on the absurdities of everyday life, this book is for you. Palace of Curiosities – Rosie Garland Abel and Eve are not like other people. Abel’s body heals itself. He has no idea how old he is, but his fractured memories suggest he’s been alive for a very long time. Eve – the Lion Girl – is covered from head to toe in golden hair. Together they are the two main attractions in a show featuring extraordinary people. Set in Victorian England, this is a beautiful tale of humanity and what it means to be ‘different’ in a world that prizes convention.
18
Reservoir 13 – Jon McGregor A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in an English village.
Seasons come and go and life goes on, but the girl’s mysterious disappearance continues to affect village life. Some people dream of finding her alive, others of discovering her body. This is not a crime novel, more a glimpse into human nature. There are a lot of characters, and you get to know each one as they go about their daily lives. It’s a quiet book, but it certainly draws you in. 100% Real – Sam Talbot If you’re looking for inspiration for healthy, tasty summer recipes, this book could be just what you need. While its focus is on clean eating, it’s not just about chia seeds and green tea. Recipes include White Fish Curry, Jerk Chicken, and Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Rum Cream. Recipes are accompanied by full page photos, and are, on the whole, easy to follow. From light lunches and snacks to dishes to impress friends, you’ll find yourself reaching for this cookery book time and time again.
decades – Nora, her mother Patty Jane and her grandmother Ione. It’s the sequel to Patty Jane’s House of Curl, but works as a stand-alone novel. There is a large cast of characters, and the timeline is hard to follow at times, as it jumps from past to present. Nevertheless, it’s a very enjoyable beach read. The Trouble with Goats and Sheep – Joanna Cannon It’s 1976 and 10 year old Grace’s neighbour, Mrs Creasy, has gone missing. With her best friend Tilly in tow, Grace sets out to solve the mystery. It soon becomes apparent that the community is hiding plenty of secrets, some of which go back almost a decade. Grace comes across as rather naive for her age at times, but she’s very likeable. A funny, easy read that will make waiting around at a station or airport much more bearable.

Discover the Beauty of Nordic Countries with Morgan`sTravel Agency! Do you want to see places where it’s daylight 24 hours a day in the summer? Have you ever wondered how it feels to be in the polar Circle? Or do you just like walking in the beautiful nature of Nordic countries? Then call Morgan`s Travel Agency and ask for more info about their beautiful trips to those countries. Jitka and David Morgan are ready to help you. So your travel agency offers trips across Nordic countries. When do you prefer to go to those countries? Is it better in the summer or in the winter? Well that depends on every customer. Some prefer walking in the snow, skiing and doing winter activities. On the other hand many customers prefer going there in the summer and enjoy the sun and the long summer days. We have our specialist Radka Habartova, who is ready to help our clients anytime. She knows those countries well and she loves them too. Your travel agency offers 10-day trips to Norway – Lofoten. Could you tell our readers what they can see on this trip?
20
For sure! From Spring to Autumn clients can enjoy Nordic summer and during winter months they should be ready for a lot of snow and lower temperatures. Our specialist meets with our clients near the polar Circle and then they go by ship to beautiful Lofoten. There you can see old fishing villages, eat their traditional Viking food, and then continue north. There is a whale trip planned where you can see those gigantic mammals which is I think is an experience of a lifetime. This year our clients can enjoy longer trips where they can see Nordkapp. It takes some time but I think it is absolutely worth that time. It is the most northern place in Europe. How beautiful the Nordkapp is! It’s second name is “The magical end of the world where the sun is always up”. I thought you would mention the famous Aurora. Do you take your clients to places where they can see it? Of course we offer this to our clients. Ideal time to observe the Aurora is from November to March. Because you have to find the Aurora it is a better
experience when you actually see it. It is hard to describe how it feels when you see it, I think you have to see that with your own eyes to get the idea. It is not 100% that we are able to find the Aurora but from last 12 groups of clients only one group had bad luck and we couldn`t find it. But we try hard to show it to our clients every time. Norway is famous for fishing, beautiful nature etc. What do you think is absolutely a must see thing in this country? We are able to give our clients everything they want to see. We can adjust the trip according to our client’s wishes. Are you an enthusiastic fisherman? No problem. Do you want to see the beautiful Norwegian nature? We can prepare trips for you too. Do you want to do everything and see everything? Absolutely no problem, we can prepare for you a special 2- week trip all around Norway. We can prepare an unforgettable holiday for anybody! Well that sounds nice. And what about the second Nordic country which you have in your offer? What would you tell our readers about Finland? Our travel agency offers several trips to Finland and I have to say that I love that country. You can enjoy romantic weekend in beautiful Helsinki with its historical monuments. Or you can see the other part of Helsinki and go to the modern
Leisure
galleries, restaurants and clubs. If you choose to travel a bit more around Finland then you can see for example Rovaniemi – beautiful old town in the polar Circle. Or town of Karasjok where we can go to Samian parliament. Or if you decide to go skiing? Absolutely no problem in Finland. There are places that snow even in the summer because the places are very high. As I mentioned above – we can adjust our trips to every client’s wishes. And what about the traditional Finnish sauna? Well is seems almost crazy for us but you can find a sauna in almost every apartment, log hut or almost every hotel room. And when we talk about traditions I have to mention one more thing which is must see place in Finland. It is Santa Claus`s village in the polar Circle. It is a great trip for children and parents. You can see the “real” Santa in the village and much more. There are some nice ski centres near the village. In the end I have to say that Finland is a beautiful quiet country where you can enjoy a nice and calm holiday and gather power for your normal life. I would recommend to everyone to give those Nordic countries a chance and go there for one time with our travel agency and I am sure that people will come for more because of the countries inner beauty. I am looking forward to seeing everyone that decides to try it.

Ride and Stride is an annual event which started in 1982 and takes place each year on the 2nd Saturday in September, this years being the 9th of September. Last year we managed to raise £137,000.00. Last year a young lad named Adam Williams aged 9 cycled to see his Grandma and managed to raise £41.00 for his local Church. Carolyn Millen our event co-ordinator cycled with her Daughter, Granddaughter and a friend, making it 3 generations taking part. My family, well 2 of my Grandchildren walked with me and the other 3 along with my Son and Daughter In Law cycled, we then all met up at Langley Church where they had delicious cakes for us to eat as we finish. Ashford Astronomical Society - Have you ever looked up at the night sky and thought ‘Wow!’, but wished you knew a bit more about it? Have you ever bought or been given a telescope and found it too difficult to setup and use? Astronomy is a fascinating and rewarding hobby, but it’s all to easy to be put off by obscure technical jargon, the enormous price of some of the equipment on sale and the sheer difficulty of knowing where to start. Contrary to popular belief, there is no requirement to be an ‘expert’ or a ‘top notch’ scientist, or even to buy huge quantities of expensive stuff to get going. All you need to start with is an interest in looking up at the night sky and a wish to know more about it. What else do you need? A welcoming and friendly Astronomy Society to guide you along of course! Contact : David Styles, General Secretary on secretary@ashfordastro.org.uk. Celebrating Student Success with Kumon! Two local Kumon Study Centres recognised the success of their students in a ceremony with the Mayor of Ashford, Winston Michael, who is passionate about helping young people. A total of 65 students and their families were in attendance. Students were presented with certificates and medals for surpassing the Kumon International Standard, which means that they are studying advanced work in comparison with their peers. Established for almost 60 years, the aim of the Kumon method of learning is to develop students into confident, independent learners and help them to achieve their full potential as individuals. Two students received special awards. Powrniha Karunakaran and Divya Jeyathas (pictured below) have both completed the whole of the Kumon English Programme ! Powrniha started her journey in year 8 and completed the programme in Year 11. Divya started her journey in Year 3 and completed in Year 6. They are both now able to understand and critique advanced texts, such as William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”. Describing her Kumon journey Divya said “When I started Kumon I was struggling with English as
I wasn’t imaginative or into reading. Studying Kumon has helped me with tests I have in school. I want to be a doctor when I grow up and I believe that the skills and knowledge I have learned at Kumon will help me “. Powrniha added “I wasn’t very good at English when I first began, but now I’ve really improved my English skills and have finally been able to get my predicted grades, which has always been difficult for me “ Additionally primary school aged students Adrian Hosseini, Angel Mody, Nandika Thileepan, Oscar Liu and Theo Batkin were presented with Level G in primary awards in recognition of their ability to work on topics studied at senior school. High level awards were also presented to Jade Yu in Year 8, and to Devika Sunil in year 9, for having mastered the skills of understanding and summarising complex text. Devika also achieved the Level J award in Kumon maths and is now studying advanced algebra. Both Ashford Kumon Study Centres are now also open on Saturday mornings. Jet Lag and Joy Lag: How to Recover from Your Holiday east is a beast’, probably because it’s easier to adapt to a longer day and delay sleep than make yourself sleep after a shorter day.
We look forward to holidays as a chance to relax and revitalise ourselves. So why do we sometimes feel exhausted and miserable when we return – and how can we stop it happening? Jet Lag What exactly is jet lag? Jet lag is a term for symptoms caused by travel to a different time-zone, which can disrupt your ‘body clock’ - your natural, circadian rhythm. This influences your sleep, eating and toileting patterns as well as digestion, temperature and blood pressure. Jet lag symptoms include changed bowel habits, tiredness, headache, anxiety, confusion and nausea. Their severity usually increases with age but primarily depends on how many time zones you cross. One or two? No problem. Three to six? You’ll feel the effects. Seven to twelve? You may need a few days to fully adapt, particularly when travelling east; ‘west is best,
28
Reducing Jet Lag Jet lag can be inconvenient at the start of your holiday, but it’s not usually a problem because you’re on holiday. When you return, though, you may not have long to adapt before you’re back at work and in your usual routine. While you can’t prevent jet lag, there are ways to help reduce its effects. • If possible, start gradually changing your routine several days before departure so that it’s closer to that of the new time zone. • Ensure you’re well-rested and hydrated before and during your flight. • Nap on the plane if night time will be a long time away when you arrive (or if it will be dawn). If you want to stay awake, keep active (this is recommended for long flights anyway, to reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis). • Avoid alcohol, which will dehydrate you and may increase jet lag symptoms. Remember that caffeinated
drinks (e.g. tea, coffee and cola) may keep you awake. • When you arrive, adjust your day to the new time immediately rather than working up to it gradually. If you can, resist napping on arrival unless it’s night time. • While the NHS recommends going outside soon after arrival if it’s daylight, Dr Idzikowski, director of Edinburgh Sleep Centre, recommends using the calculator he created to tell you when to seek out or avoid daylight to reset your bodyclock, at www.ba.com/ jetlag. Of course, you could always break your trip with a stopover or only holiday in countries with similar time zones: Western Europe, Greenland, Ghana – or parts of Antarctica. Joy Lag (Post-Holiday Blues and Exhaustion) It’s not uncommon to get back from your holiday and feel glum and exhausted. The weather is often more miserable at home and there’s no holiday to look forward to anymore. The thought of returning to your work and responsibilities (particularly if you’re not happy with them) can be daunting – as can that huge pile of holiday laundry. If you left in a rush and have been away for a while, your house may look untidy and dusty, making it hard to relax.
Perhaps you overdid it on holiday, too, packing in too many activities and trips, not getting enough sleep and overindulging in alcohol and unhealthy foods. Reducing Joy Lag These tips can’t make your overjoyed to return from holiday – they’re not magic! But they will help to reduce your joy lag. Before your holiday, try to pack gradually. For instance, if there’s only a week before your holiday and you have more than a week’s worth of socks and underwear, grab a suitcase and pack those spares now. Avoiding last minute panics, such as turning the house upside down for passports and sunglasses, should prevent

you coming back to a mess. If you can afford it, book a treat to look forward to a few weeks post-holiday. Ensure you have easy meals in stock for your return and if you can, book a day or two off after your holiday to adjust.
After your holiday, be kind to yourself. Cook easy meals or, if you can afford it, treat yourself to a meal out or a takeaway. Conversely, though, head for the washing machine as soon as you’re in the door and put a load in to wash. It will only take a minute or two and you’ll know you’ve made a start. Put suitcases out of sight until they’re empty.
During your holiday, ensure you don’t cram every moment with trips or organised activities. Everyone needs time to chill. Shortlist trips, check the weather forecast and any special events and then plan the best days to venture elsewhere. Reserve the other days for relaxation, games or a gentle walk to a local park, beach or restaurant. If you can, try to make the journey home as fun and relaxing as possible. Perhaps you could break your

plus support and advice on a range of lifestyle issues, including how to manage any long term conditions you might be living with. I was welcomed in by Jo, Beverley and Claire, all Health Improvement Practitioners, who work for KCHFT. Whilst I was in there several people came in to check how they had got on this week on a weight reduction programme that they had chosen themselves. There is some fun stuff too … you can don a fat suit to feel what it’s like to carry too much weight around, a game of guessing – to see if you can guess how much sugar and fats are in certain foods and then there is “the booth of truth”.. where you can find out your true weight and total body weight in private and receive on the spot advice about how to reach and maintain a healthy weight if you are worried. You don’t have to make an appointment you can just pop in – its easy find – Unit 7 Park Mall Shopping Centre (very near to the tank).
The One You shop opened in Ashford in February in the Park Mall Shopping Centre and is the only one in the South East of England. It is open between 9 am and 5pm, on Saturdays 9am to 1pm but closed on Sundays and Mondays. This is a joint project with Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust, Kent County Council and Ashford Borough Council. The shop brings all our local health improvement services into one place, encouraging people to lead a healthier life. Anyone can pop in for a free NHS health check. Services offered include support to stop smoking, advice on attaining a healthy weight for both adults and children, on the spot blood pressure checks, a weekly weigh in service, 30
As your representative on the Council of Governors of the Community Health Trust I am very interested to hear of your experience when visiting the One You shop. Did you find it easy to find and was the advice helpful? I will make certain that any comments you send are passed on the appropriate persons. The perfect storm? by Jamie Weller www.jamieweller.co.uk
The Perfect Storm?
The anticipated pressure on pension systems from ageing populations is the financial equivalent of climate change, says the World Economic Forum. As the dust settles from the general election, amidst many remaining uncertainties one thing is clear: the plan to cut pensioner benefits proved a turning point in Tory party fortunes. Reductions to the Winter Fuel Payment and the introduction of the social care cap (and subsequent U-turn) were always likely to ruffle some feathers, but the party’s commitment to abandon the State Pension ‘triple lock’ and raise the State Pension age to “reflect increases in life expectancy” were also among policy proposals that appeared to be soundly rejected by previously core voters. Balancing the needs of older generations who want their state entitlements protected, with younger voters who want to see wealth redistributed, is an act Mrs May’s manifesto plans clearly failed to pull off. Yet the pressure on the welfare budget will only become more acute unless this government, or a future administration, can introduce systemic pension reform and clearly communicate changes without provoking a backlash from voters. Given the anticipated increase in longevity and the declining ratio of those in the workforce to those in retirement1, the government must consider how to raise the State Pension age, while fostering a functioning labour market to extend working careers as much as possible. Although the UK’s retirement age is due to rise to 67 between 2026 and 2028, a new report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has warned that further increases are needed if the UK is to adequately and sustainably support future generations. This echoes the findings of a separate independent review of the State Pension by former CBI boss John Cridland in March.

comes of future generations and set the UK and other developed countries on course for the biggest pension crisis in history.
Global Warning WEF estimates that the gap between what people in the UK need during retirement and what they have is currently £6 trillion. If its forecasts turn out to be correct, the gulf will widen to more than £25 trillion by 2050. With half of all babies born today expected to live to over 1002, the costs of providing retirement security is projected to rise to unprecedented levels, presenting many governments with what WEF calls a “pension time bomb”. “The anticipated increase in longevity and resulting ageing populations is the financial equivalent of climate change. We must address it now or accept that its adverse consequences will haunt future generations, putting an impossible strain on our children and grandchildren,” Michael Drexler, head of financial and infrastructure systems at WEF, said in the report. While generous benefits accrued in final salary pension schemes, combined with higher-thaninflation rises to the State Pension, have led to a revolution in pensioner wealth, younger generations are unlikely to be as fortunate. They will, on average, spend more years in retirement but will receive less from their private pensions. Consequently, they may be more reliant on the state. Yet the State Pension is unlikely to become more generous in real terms. Clearly, it will fall on individuals to put more aside for retirement. If we don’t change our saving habits, we are all going to have to spend longer working, or we must revise down our expectations of what retirement looks like. It’s almost certain that retirement ages in this country will rise, but by how much and how quickly will be an issue for the government to grapple with over the next parliament. The State Pension age
could rise to 70 for today’s twenty-somethings, so a retirement age of 60 or 65 could soon turn out to be a privilege for the fortunate few.
