Welcome Hi everyone, Well August is upon us again, is it just me or are the months racing by at break neck speed? The school holidays are now here and the kids are probably bored already, so why not check out this month’s events, you may find something to keep them entertained, for a little while at least. The bi-annual Aldington Soapbox Derby takes place this year on Bank Holiday Monday. It’s a great day out for the family, and the creative speed freaks among us are offered an adrenaline fueled race down Forge Hill, hoping that their Karts make it to the bottom in one piece - and the right way up! August has a number of high profile birthdays, Alexander Fleming b: 1881 Enid Blyton b: 1897, Mother Teresa b: 1910, and then there’s Madonna and Michael Jackson b:1958. Last but not least - ME! All gifts gratefully received, just kidding! Sadly August is also the month the world lost Elvis Presley in 1977, it was one of those shock announcements that ensures you never forget where you were at the time, much like Kennedy in 1963 - although I was much too young to remember that one! On a positive note, as one door closes another opens, my husband was born just eight days before the loss of Kennedy. He may not be famous and powerful but, like Mary Poppins, he’s practically perfect. So much so he’s known to those that love him as Peter Poppins or Peeps for short! Until next time, have a great month!

Tropical Paradise by Pippa Greenwood

4

Have you missed out on a summer holiday again this year, or do you still think longingly of that fabulous tropical trip you had a few years back? This time of year, as the summer’s end is not too far away, is when so many of us wish for that exotic holiday we never quite had! So why not try to recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead? The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing …..and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip. A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of

Ashwoods • Tree Surgery • Stump Removal

the less hardy tropical look plants and you will create that dense, lush looks which spells tropical paradise. Keep plants well watered and fed and they should be full of vigour too. Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Ok, so it won’t yield a crop of bananas but it’ll provide a tropical look and a good deal of comment too. Indian shot plants, also known as the cannas are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna ‘Tropicana’, or for a larger than life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very fast and has wonderfully rich purple-green leaves. If you want more than just foliage (and who doesn’t?) then you might like the idea of some tropical effect flowers added in to the mix. If so, try

the bulbous Eucomis bicolour with out-of-this world greenish yellow flowerheads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura) as angel’s trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring. Don’t forget the vertical surfaces such as trellis, walls and fences as they too can be given a floral and foliage makeover. These may look boring now, but will look great when covered with passion flowers, ornamental vines or the pretty Cobea scandens commonly known as the cup and saucer plant.

Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features whether living – perhaps a Trachycarpus fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. It is well worth checking what is available in local garden centres and junk shops or maybe even the local council recycling centre. Even if you go to the garden centre, statues and garden ornaments are very variable in price and there are now many available which are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage they help to add to the jungle like atmosphere you are creating. It is always worth visiting local nurseries and garden centres for more ideas and to find your own personal favourite tropical-effect plants to add

to the mix. There are plenty to choose from and other plants to consider could include : tree ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads (again great in a pot), citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) which are not always reliably hardy but can be used throughout the summer and then overwintered in a suitable greenhouse, conservatory or window sill and bamboos (including the dramatic black-

the garden

stemmed ‘nigra’, Filipendula rubra, Ligularia, gloriosa lily and Fatsia japonica). So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or pet-sitter…..all you need now is a deck chair and maybe, just maybe a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for Nemaslug & other biocontrols, Speed Hoes, Speed Weeders SoftTie, pop-up crop covers, copper tape and lots more besides.

Home & Interiors Victorian Style

By Katherine Sorrell found in the modern home. Fabrics, too, were rather more elaborate than we are used to today, with a great deal of embellishments – though William Morris’s Arts & Crafts designs introduced a relative simplicity and have remained popular ever since.

10

It may not be the height of fashion, but there is much to be said for Victorian style, which is confident, distinctive and eminently comfortable, says Katherine Sorrell Everything changed in the 19th century. From society to science, politics to industry, the Victorian era was a time of enormous transformation. Travel, too, became easier, and influences and ideas from all around the world became increasingly important. The middle classes expanded rapidly, and their homes became the perfect vehicles with which to show off both their newly acquired wealth and their cultural savvy. The result? An interior style that was exuberant, eclectic and, quite often, downright over the top. The high Victorian style was a riot of revivalism, and different periods were mixed with abandon, including Elizabethan, Italianate, ‘Louis’, Egyptian and

Queen Anne Revival. The main ‘Battle of the Styles’, however, was between ‘Greek’, (in other words, pretty much all types of classical architecture and decoration), and ‘Gothic’ (more or less any style reminiscent of Olde Englande). Gothic was the winner, its most famous exponent Augustus Pugin, designer of the refurbished Palace of Westminster. Despite its mix and match of styles, and a tendency towards clutter, the main ingredients for Victorian living were not so far from where we are today, give or take a tweak or two in colour and pattern. Encaustic tiled hallways and polished, dark wood floors with a central rug featuring large, bold patterns set the scene, while patterned wallpaper was de rigueur. Wooden furniture was dark, solid and often very, very large – but we would recognise much of it, from dressers and dining tables to sideboards and writing desks, though whatnots and chiffoniers are rarely to be

Upholstered seating was the major development from the preceding Georgian era. Coil springing had been invented in the 1820s, and Victorian sofas and chairs featured deep buttons and comfortable, curving shapes. Also new to furniture-making was Thonet’s technique for bending beechwood to produce his nowclassic café chairs, while metal bedsteads were introduced to Britons at the Great Exhibition of 1851 – and have changed little in style ever since. As far as colour choices went, the Victorians loved anything rich, deep and vivid. These hues worked well with the dark brown furniture that predominated, but are best used judiciously today. That said, they can be most attractive in the right place: deep shades, such as crimson, claret, bottle green, sharp yellow, purple, mahogany, terracotta and Prussian blue, were preferred for sitting rooms, dining rooms and studies; paler and fresher hues, including pink, grey, pale blue and soft green, were considered to be more suitable for bedrooms. Lighting has, of course, altered a great deal in the last 150 years or so. When Victoria came to the throne, oil and candle lamps were the only form of lighting in most homes, but during her reign first gas lighting was developed and then, at the very end of the 19th century, early electricity. There

were a great many elaborate and ornamental styles of lamp, including swan-necked brass wall lights, flower-shaped glass shades and china lamps covered with floral sprigs. Originals – which can often be converted to electricity – are often to be found today, as are all sorts of reproductions. The Victorian middle-class kitchen, used only by servants, was a very plain room, equipped with free-standing tables, with the sink in an adjacent scullery. And the bathroom only came into being as a separate room in the 1870s, before which time all ablutions took place in the bedroom, using a wooden washstand plus bowl and pitcher, or a tin bath in front of the fire. Along with indoor bathrooms came distinctive sanitaryware – large, often colourfully decorated basins, and enamelled roll-top baths on ball and claw or scroll feet, much of which can be found in reproduction form for those

with spacious enough rooms. Because Victorians considered bare rooms to be in poor taste, their houses were filled with more knick knacks, objets d’art and collections than ever before or since, some of which are right on-trend today – embroidered samplers or miniature flowers under a glass dome, anyone? Other Victorian accessories have not stood the test of time quite so well, including black and white miniature portraits, colonial exotica and toby jugs. Nor has a helpful kitchen accessory, employed for anyone unlucky enough to suffer from cockroaches – a hedgehog kept in a box.. Mowgli by Montgomery Vets

H

ello everyone, Mowgli here. Hope all of you are still enjoying the summer. Ebony and I are still enjoying the hot weather we have been having, although I get so hot sometimes after sunbathing that I have to go and collapse on the cool kitchen floor. Not my fault if people trip over me is it- you would have thought a beautiful cream and brown Serengeti snow cat on a terracotta floor would be quite obvious, wouldn’t you? I tell you- humans are sometimes almost as stupid as goats!

O 12

ne of those silly goats has been ill this monthMerlin went off his food and stopped eating so he had to have some blood tests. Not easy of course because goats are so stupid- Spike attacks anyone who tries to examine Merlin so Clive and Jane had to rope in several friends to assist so that someone could hold Spike whilst someone else held Merlin. It was so funny I nearly fell off the window sill. Lots of Clive creeping around trying to get Merlin into the shed by tempting him with a banana and then in the end having to chase him and try a bit of a rugby tackle. Somehow I don’t think it was only me laughing…… Anyway, after the blood test and some antibiotics Merlin is back to normal and once again enjoying all the summer leaves.

I

t all made me remember the time when I was poorly. I have only really been ill once but it was so horrible I remember it all very clearly. I kept being sick and I felt very nauseous. I wouldn’t’ eat anything at all and any tablets that Clive gave me I just sicked back up. That of course was a shame because it meant I had to have injections. I didn’t like them very much and they made me tremble and shake and then miaow piteously (I was so ill you see that I had lost my Siamese-style yowl). I still couldn’t eat and I had to be carried around the house because I felt so awful. In the end I had to have a blood test. I was wrapped up in a towel on the dining room table and Jane took blood from

my neck. I tell you- the indignity of it all! Wrapped up in a towel and not even one with a high thread count! It was a bit of a low point. After the blood sample was taken there was mention of being put on a drip. Somehow when I heard that I started to manage to feel a bit better. I even managed to eat a few tasty morsels and by the next day I was back to normal. Apparently my blood results were all normal too. Clive could be heard loudly muttering something about hypochondriac cats and high maintenance pets. I simply don’t know what he means…..

A

nyway, hope you are all having a healthy summer and that you are all enjoying a bit of quiet feline time if your humans are going on holiday. Although of course if they go away us

cats do all work very hard- looking after the house sitters, making sure the house is secure, being in charge of the other pets, the list is endless. Ebony and I always point this out to Clive and Jane when they come back from being away, and although it is true- we do work hard when they are away- I think that all the extra space on the bed makes up for it- humans take up such a lot of room!

“A Great British Success Story” How Harvey Bowden rose from humble plumber to establishing the UK’s most popular water softener company... Harvey was born and raised in Cornwall – an area renowned for it’s soft water. So when he moved with his family to Surrey 40 years ago, it wasn’t long before they noticed a problem. Harvey’s wife Ann noticed how hard the water was and how much more time she was spending cleaning lime scale from sinks, taps and baths. The increased cost of soaps and detergents to deal with hard water also came as quite a surprise.

14

After mentioning the problem one day to her neighbour, she learned her neighbour had something called a ‘water softener’ installed, which eliminated these problems. Ann decided that she wanted one and so spent her own money to buy it. Harvey recalls “I was a plumber and thought it extravagant but when I installed it I couldn’t believe how good it was. So I started recommending them to my customers”. In the beginning... Impressed with his customer’s feedback, Harvey formed Surrey Softeners Ltd in 1978 and began supplying and installing Permutit softeners. Before long, he became the biggest ever Permutit water softener seller, installer and dealer. A few short years later in 1981, Harvey opened his first factory on Hipley Street in Old Woking and Harvey Water Softeners was born. Production began on a twin cylinder non-electric undersink water softener which he had developed from his experience fitting and installing softeners. Harvey improved his water softener by creating small blocks of salt to replace the old fashioned tablets, and continually works on making sure his softeners are the smallest and most efficient on the market.

The popularity of his softeners grew, allowing Harvey to build the business together with his family until it became the largest and most successful water softener company in the UK and instigated the development of the market. And today… Harvey Water Softeners are proud to be the largest manufacturer of domestic water softeners in the UK. With over 100 staff and over 200,000 happy customers, Harvey’s vision of a water softener in every home in the UK grows nearer. “Every home in the UK would benefit from a water softener because the water is hard. Hard water is unnecessary. If it makes sense for one person, then it makes sense for everybody. We all use water every day and hard water does not do any job nearly as well as softened water does”. When asked what his favourite benefit of soft water is, he happily replies “Showering and shaving in softened water is the thing I enjoy the most. The pure joy of clean water and the occasional wallow in a deep bath with real soap bubbles is wonderful. Also my skin doesn’t itch.” Although Harvey is now semi-retired and the day to day running of the business is in the capable hands of his son Casey, when he isn’t enjoying one of his many hobbies including vintage motorcycles and sailing he can still be found at the factory talking to his customers, assisting his staff or working on his next big idea. Cake and Bake Strawberry Shortcake Tarts Make the most of sweet and juicy British strawberries with these divine fruit tarts. If you don’t have time to make the pastry cream then use fresh ready-made custard or just top with sweetened whipped cream.

Ingredients: 16

• 225g self-raising flour • 1tsp baking powder • 75g butter, chilled and diced

• 50g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten • 2-3 tbsp milk For the Pastry Cream and Topping

• • • • • • • • •

2 medium eggs 25g plain flour 50g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 300ml milk 150ml double cream 175g strawberries 5ml lemon juice 1 tbsp icing sugar

Serves 6 Ready in 45 mins, plus cooling time

1. Preheat the oven to 190C, fan 170C, Gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Lightly butter 6 x 8cm loose-based fluted tartlet tins (measured across the base). 2. Sift the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, egg and enough milk to make a soft dough. 3. Divide the dough into six equal pieces and, using floured hands, press each piece of dough into the base and up the sides of a tartlet tin. Place the tins on the hot baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out and leave to cool completely. 4. To make the pastry cream, beat together the eggs, flour, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Pour the milk into a small pan and heat the milk to almost boiling point then whisk into the egg mixture. Return the mixture to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring all the time, until thickened. Cover the surface with greaseproof paper and leave to cool completely. 5. Whip the cream until softly peaking and fold into the pastry cream. Puree half the strawberries by pushing through a fine-holed sieve. Stir in the lemon juice and icing sugar. Slice the rest of the strawberries. 6. Spoon the pastry cream on top of the shortcakes. Top with the sliced strawberries and spoon over the puree. Serve within 2-3 hours of assembling.

TIP

The shortcake tart bases can be made and stored unfilled in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Decorative Hop Garlands are the most beautiful natural garlands, picked fresh from the field at the end of August and hung in the home where they dry naturally to give all year round decoration. Ideal over fireplaces and agas, or on beams, over doorways, windows or on dressers, the traditional Kentish hop garland is highly sought after and now not as widely available as they used to be. Tractors run up and down from the hop gardens every day during the hop harvest to bring the freshly picked hops to the shop for customers to choose from. The hop harvest starts around 20th august until 15th September but you can buy the dried garlands all year round. essentiallyhops is nestled in a tranquil farm yard in the heart of the countryside just outside Canterbury there is an excellent coffee shop and other interesting businesses to make your visit even more special. The shop is a magical grotto packed full of home decoration ideas and customers can watch expert florists

www.essentiallyhops.co.uk making gorgeous flower arrangements, get inspiration and ideas to brighten their homes. health & Lifestyle London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge Cyclists can take life by the handle bars on Sunday 13th September and enjoy a stunning 65 or 80 mile cycle ride from London’s Greenwich Park to Canterbury, Kent. The UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury, The Children’s Trust, are appealing for cyclists of all abilities to take part. Kim Derry, Events Manager for the event, tells us “the ride really is open to anyone. We have cyclists of all shapes and sizes, male and female, and of all ages, from 16 to 60! By signing up now, everyone has enough time to train, whether you’re a seasoned rider, or still need to go out and get yourself a bike”.

22

Riders meet at The Pavilion Café in Greenwich Park between 8 and 9am, where hot and cold breakfasts will be available. The route, planned and provided by professional Cycling Support Services, has been carefully thought out and is both well signposted and marshalled, with regular refreshment stops. Riders will explore the beautiful Kent countryside including the historic Pilgrim’s Way, before crossing the finish line to a much welcomed sports massage, along with a post-ride party, where friends

and family are encouraged to join in the fun. “The ride is just fantastic, and we’ve had some really amazing feedback from previous years. A lot of riders we see returning each year which is great testimony for us. We always encourage feedback, which means we are able to make continuous improvements to the event. This year stands to be the biggest one yet, and we are aiming for between 3 and 400 hundred sign ups”. For those coming from the Kent area, a coach is available to take cyclists up from Canterbury to the start line in Greenwich Park, a space of which can be booked via The Children’s Trust website. “This year we are working hard to create a great after party and we really encourage friends and family to meet their cycling heroes to celebrate. We’ll have amazing balloon creations, face painting for the children, music, stands & stalls, and a great selection of food including a BBQ, and an on-site café catering for healthier options”. Why not become part of The Children’s Trust’s biggest cycle event and sign up now? For more information and to take advantage of the earlybird sign up offer, visit www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk/ londontocanterbury or telephone 01737 364323.

Can You Help Us Find Our Sister? We are looking to trace our sister who was born Brenda Carr in South Shields Tyne & Wear ( was County Durham at the time) . She was fostered and then moved to Kent with foster parents and subsequently adopted. She is one of 14 siblings. Although there are only ten left including herself. She was born in December 1959. We have tried on numerous occasions to find her, with no luck. So we are hoping this time with the help of readers of The Village Directory we may strike it lucky.

We were all placed into the care of the local authority but have managed to trace each other with the exception of Brenda. We know she will have had her name changed. But hope that she knows about her adoption and this might enlighten her to her other brothers and sisters who have always wanted to know that she is okay and has never been forgotten by any of us. She is the missing link to making our family complete.

My name is Barbara Carr and I can be contacted on 07715 497 611, Thank you.

WORDWHEEL

Puzzle Time Sudoku

Using only the letters in the Wordwheel, you have ten minutes to find as many words as possible, none of which may be plurals, foreign words or proper nouns. Each word must be of three letters or more, all must contain the central letter and letters can only be used once in every word. There is at least one word that uses all of the letters in the wheel.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition! That’s all there is to it, you solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!
