Plumbing & Heating Services
Welcome Hi everyone, Welcome to the July Issue, back in July 2005 the very first issue of The Village Directory was published. It is now nine years since that first edition, and I remember so clearly those nervous days after having sent the magazine to print, waiting to see how it would be received once it started to land on door mats. My little magazine was about to go into three thousand homes and I had no idea how it would be received - scary! Now, nine years on there are eight versions of the magazine going into a total of 60,000 homes. If someone had told me how many people it would eventually be delivered to it would have frightened the living daylights out of me, I wouldn’t have thought I could do it. A very big thank you to everyone for your continued support, it’s great to know that you are mentioning the magazine when responding to advertisers, this helps so much. I would also like to say a big thank you to the businesses that support the magazine with their advertising. As I write we have just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary, I say celebrate, we just about found time for a quick drink down our local. Our social life tends to be put on hold for the magazines around this time of each month. It seems that every social event in our family occurs during the first two weeks of the month i.e. deadline time. Thank goodness I have an understanding and supportive husband! Until next time have a great month

Garden Shed
Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood
4
If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them
with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection.
Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. getting to the time of year when everyone seems to take a holiday. Ebony and I think that it is madness ourselves- why go away just at the time that we have the best weather at home? Ebony and I of course never get a holiday. We hear that some cats do- they get to pack a little bag with their favourite blanket and a few toys and go and stay at what sounds to us like a luxury cat spa- food brought to your room every day, heated beds, outside rooms with a view of the garden and birds. Also an opportunity to spy on the cats in neighbouring rooms and exchange a few stories through the walls! It all sounds rather pleasant to us, although we both actually admit that we prefer our own arrangements when Clive and Jane go away. Our best friends from down the road come and look after us. They come and feed us at least twice a day and we are really lucky that they come and spend time with us tooplay with us and watch TV so we can curl up on

their laps and stroke us all the time. We purr for them non-¬stop. There are other advantages to the folks being away- we get the whole bed to ourselves and have none of this being squashed in the night business. We also don ‘t have anyone moaning at us that we have taken too much duvet! We actually find it a bit like a holiday for us too, although there is of course the responsibility of looking after the whole house and those stupid goats. Ebony and I do checks in the morning and the evening and I have to say it is quite tiring. We make sure that Clive knows this when they come back- it might have been a holiday for him, but we have had to look after everything whilst he has been away. I forget all this quickly though as long as I get a ride around the house on the wheeled suitcases. I cannot resist a wheeled suitcase and love nothing more than a white knuckle ride on one.
I
also need to update you all on our mouse situation. It got worse- the mouse in the kitchen came back and started eating our cat food! We were so outraged that we decided to ignore the mouse and the whole situation and pretend that it just wasn’t happening. Jane couldn’t understand this of course- humans are so dim sometimes- and kept asking me where the mouse was, where it had been and just why I was letting it eat my food. Anyway, it seems to have left the kitchen and moved to the attic so Ebony and I at least are happy!

Home & Interiors Double-Up Your Space
By Katherine Sorrell
When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one.
12
Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room. The trick is to forget your preconceptions about where you live and be creative with the space. To get the most out of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Next, make the most of any free wall. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves – from high above your head to fitted across an alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future.
No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way. Calligaris Quadro white lacquered bar table, £111; Calligaris Olivia solid wood folding chairs in wenge or beech, £80 each; all Lime Modern Living, 01892 512611; www.limemodernliving.co.uk.
By raising a child’s bed you create two rooms: one for sleeping, and one below for playing, studying, relaxing or for sleepovers. The same goes with an adult bedroom – if you have high enough ceilings, consider building a mezzanine sleeping space, leaving room underneath to use however you wish. Loft bed by Oliver Furniture, £995, Nubie, 01825 724160; www.nubie.co.uk.

Life Begins My VCR Moment by Kate McLelland
I remember the 1980s as a time
of tremendous change, when the growth of technology resulted in revolutionary gadgets such as the Polaroid camera, the Boombox, the Sony Walkman and the video cassette recorder.
14
As a teenager I constantly nagged, begged and pleaded with my parents to buy a VCR. I was tired of hearing our neighbours boast about watching repeats of Dallas and longed to be able to record all the “juvenile and mindless” comedy programmes my parents refused to watch, so I could play them on an endless loop as soon as I got home from school. My father loved his television, so I naturally assumed he would be eager to own a VCR, but he remained strangely reluctant to buy one. The day he finally gave in and came home with a brand new recorder, my brother and I nearly exploded with excitement. However, as soon as he unpacked the box and began to read the instructions, we realised something was wrong. I remember watching with fascination as my normally capable father hesitated, fumbled and cursed under
his breath, trying to get to grips with this alien piece of technology. After a long struggle with the cables he gave up and decamped to the kitchen for a cup of tea, leaving my brother and I twitching with impatience. Before he’d drained his cup and returned to the lounge, we had set up the VCR and made a test recording. That was the first time I had ever questioned my parents’ ability to do anything, and I recall feeling slightly smug about our success with the VCR. In future years as televisions, radios and other items of household equipment became more complex and technically challenging, we were simply given the manual and left to get on with it. It’s not unusual for patterns to repeat themselves over successive generations, and I’m a little ashamed to admit that instead of continuing to embrace the new, I simply sat back and let my own children take on the role of “expert”. I therefore managed to sidestep the IT revolution completely. Knowing next to nothing about computers never really bothered me until recently, when I agreed to babysit one of my grandchildren. He
turned up clutching a brand new tablet computer and inevitably - asked me for help. It was then that I found myself in exactly the same position as my poor father, confounded by the VCR all those years ago. It hurt my pride to realise that I am no longer able to keep up with new technology, and my experience made me think of all those other people of my age who haven’t yet picked up the basic principles of operating a computer. These people now have a precious window of opportunity to gain IT skills before their ability to learn is compromised by old age. I might have been embarrassed to admit I couldn’t use my grandson’s tablet computer, but I’m eternally grateful to him for making me aware of the yawning gap in my knowledge … a gap I’ve allowed to become wider and wider over the years. I may have let things slip, but I don’t intend to waste any more time: this week I’ve signed up for a computer course at my local library.

Time They say that time flies when you’re having fun, but anyone under the age of 18 who has a seemingly endless summer holiday stretching ahead of them is going to be praying that isn’t the case. Whether you’re spending the summer behind a desk or in a deckchair, these timely titles will certainly make the minutes and hours pass you by, almost in an instant.
16
The Time Traveler’s Wife - Audrey Niffenegger Art student Claire first met librarian Henry when she was six and he was thirty-one, and then again when she was twenty-three and he was thirty-one. Henry has ChronoDisplacement Disorder and so lives out his bizarre life leaping between time and space, his ‘clock’ continually resetting, meaning Claire has no idea where or more specifically, when, the love of her life will reappear again. Though constantly torn apart and then thrown back together again, they try and hold onto some semblance of a normal life; raising their child and holding onto the fact that they found each other at all. It’s a fantastic and heart-wrenching book that will leave you hoping that somehow and somewhere you will be able to catch up with Claire and Henry once again. A Tale for the Time Being - Ruth Ozeki A teenage girl in Tokyo plans to take her own life. Nao is suffering at the hands of bullies, but before she ends it she needs to finish writing the story of her great grandmother, an ancient Buddhist nun. When a Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on a beach in British Columbia, novelist Ruth finds Nao’s diary, and a new obsession. She believes it to be debris left over from the Japanese tsunami of 2011 and is determined to find out how both Nao and her great grandmother’s stories end. This is a remarkable story linking three women across time and continents. The Time Machine - H.G. Wells Long before Doctor Who started fighting Daleks and regenerating,
H.G. Wells gave the world his view of the future, through the eyes of a Victorian scientist. The Time Traveller (we never learn his real name) invents a time machine that sends him to the year 802,701AD and discovers a peaceful people called the Eloi. But these descendants of man live lives of unspoken terror. When he scratches beneath the surface of this apparent utopia, our time traveller discovers another race: Morlocks. These terrifying tunneldwellers are not to be messed with and the time traveller must escape post-haste…if only he can relocate his missing time machine. A Time to Kill - John Grisham A ten year old black girl is viciously attacked and assaulted by two drunken white men one night. The town of Clanton, Mississippi is thrown into total chaos by the act of violence and the girl’s father, Carl Lee Hailey, asks a white attorney Jake Brigance for legal advice, wanting to know if he could be acquitted if he kills the two men. Brigance implores Hailey not to do anything stupid, but adds that if it were his daughter…Hailey avenges Tonya’s attack and kills both men leaving Brigance fighting to save both his client and his own skin. This is a legal thriller at its best, firmly cementing Grisham as the king of the courtroom drama. Hard Times - Charles Dickens Domineering headmaster Thomas Gradgrind is the personification of the Industrial Revolution. He is a man of facts and the hard truth and he banishes free-thinking, creativity and freedom of expression from his home and from his classroom. His views and utilitarian regime
dominate Coketown and it is little wonder that his son rebels and falls into a life of crime, whilst his obedient daughter marries a man she doesn’t love. Enter the spritely and carefree circus performer Sissy Jupe to spice this drab world up a bit, along with the weaver, Stephen Blackpool. It may be there could be a chink of light in this otherwise drab, industrial prison of a town. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Mark Haddon Chris doesn’t make for the most likely of detectives in this ‘whodunit’. He’s fifteen years old and he has Asperger’s Syndrome. He likes facts and order, routine and mathematics. He finds social interaction and other human beings an absolute minefield to negotiate. When Chris finds his neighbour’s dog has been murdered he must rise to the challenges that life has thrown to him and take himself out of his comfort zone. The story has been published in a version for adults and another for children and isn’t, says Haddon, a book about Asperger’s. It’s a story about what it’s like to be on the outside looking in; how different and isolated we can all feel and how varied the human mind is in interpreting what’s going on around us.

Mussel & Potato Chowder Serves 4
Ready in 45 minutes This filling meal-in-a-bowl makes a lovely weekend supper that’s ready in less than an hour. Most supermarket fresh fish counters sell bags of fresh mussels all year round, but if they are unavailable you can use 2 x 500g packs of mussels in white wine sauce and just reduce the fish stock to 300ml and omit the white wine.
18
First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold running water and discard any that are cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside.
Ingredients: •
1kg fresh mussels
•
1 tbsp olive oil
•
15g butter
•
4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped
Heat the oil and butter in a large deep saucepan or flameproof casserole. Add the shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
•
2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
•
100ml white wine
•
2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks
Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that remain closed.
•
350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube

Cake and Bake Peach Gallette This divine summer dessert just couldn’t be easier to make – no flan tin and no baking blind! Make sure you have a good solid baking sheet to bake the galette on as this will ensure a crisp pastry base. You can replace the fresh peaches with drained canned peaches, if liked. 22
Ingredients:
1
• • • •
2
• • • • •
225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 150g unsalted butter, diced 100g ground almonds 4 tbsp caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 2 large egg yolks blended with 2 tbsp ice cold water 6 large fresh, ripe peaches, skinned, stoned and sliced Beaten egg, to glaze 1 tbsp pistachio nuts, chopped Vanilla ice cream, to serve
TIP To skin peaches, score a cross in the skin with the tip of a knife then cover with boiling water for 1-2 minutes. Drain and cover with cold water for a further minute – the skins should peel off easily.
Serves 6 - Ready in 50 minutes plus chilling

To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and using your fingertips rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in half the ground almonds and half the sugar. Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolks and water. Stir with a round-bladed knife to form a crumbly dough (add a little extra cold water if the mix is too dry). Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead gently until just smooth. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 40 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough circle about 30cm in diameter. Transfer to the baking sheet. Sprinkle the rest of the ground almonds in the centre of the pastry circle, leaving a 7cm border. Arrange the peach slices on top of the almonds. Fold the pastry border inwards – just over the edges of the peach slices. Brush the pastry edge with beaten egg and sprinkle over the chopped pistachios. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Sprinkle over the rest of the sugar and serve warm or cold with scoops of vanilla ice cream.

9 Answers: Tinkaboo’s favourite food is biscuits. There are 5 jugs in Dolly’s kitchen.
Especially for you Tinkaboo!
1. Mix in all of the fluid ingredients, oil, water, eggs and honey, with the rolled oats. 2. Mash the bananas with a fork, then add to the mix. 3. Add 2 cups of flour, mix with a spoon then slowly add the rest of the flour (you may need more if it’s too wet and sloppy) 4. Once you are happy with the mix, tip it onto a floured surface and roll until 1/4 of an inch thick, thicker if you want a softer centre. 5. Cut out in your favourite shapes, put onto trays lined with greese proof paper. 6. Bake at a low to medium temperature, no higher, until golden. (Approx an hour) 7. Allow to cool, if you want to decorate, buy yogurt drops (available online or hobby craft stores), melt in a bain-marie and dip or drizzle over the squiss-kits. 8. Allow to set, they do not need to go in the fridge. Store in a cake tin or cookie jar.

Hobbies Why the Sewing Bee is Buzzing Louder Than Ever When you start out with a hobby it’s always difficult to predict the way your skills might develop in future, but it’s important to think ahead if you are investing in equipment. Because you will be starting with minimal skills, you may be tempted to purchase a sewing machine with simple, basic functions and later regret that you didn’t opt for one of the more expensive models. On the other hand there’s a risk that you’ll splash out on a costly, multi-functional machine and discover that you end up making nothing more challenging than cushion covers!
32
Perhaps it’s all part of the cult of nostalgia we’re experiencing at the moment, including shabby chic, home baking and handmade household accessories. Sewing is suddenly cool again, and that vintage Singer sewing machine that your mother banished to the garage all those years ago has recently returned to reclaim its place as a musthave item in UK homes. With TV programmes such as “The Great British Sewing Bee” commanding audiences of 2.7 million, it’s clear that sewing has once again captured the public’s imagination, and the trend looks set to continue. Of course, the recent climate of austerity has also played its part in this revival. Although shops selling ultra-cheap, disposable fashion have been a presence in our high streets for a number of years now, customers are slowly beginning to realise just how disposable cut-price fashion can be. When garments look stretched and worn after just a
couple of washes, it’s clear that buying cheap, mass-produced items can be a false economy. Making your own clothing is the answer to all those concerns about quality and durability, and there’s no better way to express your personality than to source your own fabrics, creating a fashion look that is unique to you. If you feel inspired to make your own clothes or home accessories then it’s advisable to start with one or two small test pieces, so you can get the feel of operating a sewing machine and working with fabric. So which machine should you buy? The old-style sewing machines mentioned at the beginning of this article are available to buy on Ebay, with prices ranging from £40 to £200 (for models incorporating a table). Alternatively you can purchase a new machine starting from around £200, although you will need to do your research carefully.
For this reason it’s best to start off with a brand of machine that offers the option for you to add functionality over time. Extra accessories for ornate stitching or overlocking seams can be purchased online, allowing you to undertake more complex sewing tasks as your confidence grows. When you’ve bought your machine the next step will be to get hold of a simple pattern and some fabric. Purchasing fabric can be expensive and as you stand there, with your brand new sewing shears poised for action, you may wish that you had someone on hand to guide you through your first attempt at making up a garment. Whether you are a complete beginner or someone who learned sewing years ago and just needs a refresher, it’s sensible to seek expert advice rather than go it alone. There is much to be said for joining a sewing course, where you can get instant feedback and where a tutor is always on hand to get
you out of any difficulties. In larger UK cities you’ll find plenty of courses available, priced from around £40 upwards. These tend to take place in fashion colleges, trendy sewing cafes or at adult education centres. However, if you live in a rural area you may find it more difficult to locate a suitable class: www. thesewingdirectory.co.uk has a list of local classes and sewing groups which you can search by county. Sewing classes are a great place to make friends and pick up valuable tips that improve your work, but not everyone can afford to pay for lessons and sometimes learning at home is the only option. You can, of course, buy books that show you how to sew: ‘S.E.W. Sew Everything Workshop’ by Diana Rupp and ‘The Readers’ Digest New Complete Guide to Sewing’ are two comprehensive instruction books for beginners
that have attracted numerous positive reader comments.

The alternative is to turn to the many helpful, explanatory blogs and ‘how to’ videos for the beginner available on the internet, as these don’t cost anything and are almost as good as face-to-face tuition. One such blog can be found at www. tillyandthebuttons.com, with well illustrated, step-by-step tutorials on everything from ‘setting up your sewing machine’ to ‘inserting a jacket sleeve’.

Have a Healthy Holiday By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
You’ve booked the perfect holiday in the ideal destination. In your dreams you’re already there, sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxing with a good book but it could turn into a nightmare unless you ensure you’ve got your holiday health covered beforehand.
Holidaying in the UK
34
If you’re holidaying in the UK, it’s easier; food, drink, transport and healthcare are all familiar and there’s no language barrier. You should still arrange travel insurance though, in case an accident or illness means your holiday is cancelled or cut short. If you’re planning to go way off the beaten track or hill climbing, check the weather forecast first. Wear appropriate footwear and ensure you take your mobile (fully charged), warm waterproof clothing and a first aid kit. Take a map too and make sure everyone knows the route (if only one person does, what happens if they’re injured and lose consciousness, or can’t walk?). Plan walks realistically as you’ll be slower over rough terrain. These things sound simple but many deaths are caused every year by ignoring these precautions. If you’re going to a beach that’s out of the way, check it’s safe for swimming. Concealed rocks and debris can be dangerous and the UK coast harbours creatures that
can deliver a nasty sting – check the useful guide to them here: http://bit.ly/1m9uFYJ
Holidaying Abroad Read your guidebook and information from your travel company well in advance and visit http://www.fitfortravel. nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before departure for specific precautions for your destination. Make sure you’re aware of: • Air travel healthy and safety Newborn babies and women over 36 weeks pregnant (32 weeks if it’s a multiple pregnancy) can’t travel by air, and it’s also not advised if you’ve had a recent stroke, heart attack, surgery or trauma, or if you have a communicable disease or certain conditions affecting your ears, chest, head or cardiovascular system. Insurance can become void if you ignore advice about preexisting conditions or conceal them, so check with your doctor. Inside aeroplanes the air is very dry. Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol, as this will dehydrate you and altitude increases its effects. Ask your doctor’s advice if you are concerned about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or if you’ve given birth in the last two months. The risk of DVT can be reduced by walking, stretching, avoiding alcohol
and caffeine, and keeping well hydrated. Compression stockings may also help if fitted and worn correctly. • Local laws and customs Beware different traffic signals and different laws particularly about standards of dress. • Food and water safety Always wash your hands before and after using the toilet or handling food, and pack sanitizer gel or wipes in case hand-washing facilities are unclean or non-existent. If you’re not sure the water is safe, don’t drink it or use it for brushing teeth unless it’s boiled or treated with purification tablets – otherwise stick to bottled water. Avoid ice cubes too. Choose well-cooked, freshly prepared food where you can (especially if buying from street vendors), and avoid salads, shellfish and icecream (unless it’s from a large commercial manufacturer). Thoroughly clean or peel fruit and vegetables. • Health precautions Depending on where you’re going, there may be a risk of malaria and it shouldn’t be taken lightly; it can be fatal. Use repellents on exposed skin and repellents and/or insecticides around your room and on mosquito screens and your clothing, as mosquitoes may bite through it. Wear

long trousers or long-sleeved tops, particularly after dark. Anti-malarial tablets need to be started before you go and must be continued (sometimes for up to 4 weeks) when you return. Pack a supply of diarrhoea medication so it’s close by if needed. Vaccinations Again, requirements depend on destination; check http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before travel to find specific guidelines for the country you’re visiting as some vaccines are given in several doses, and factor in other countries you may plan to visit on holiday. Carry proof of vaccinations – some countries will require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) should all be free, but you’ll have to pay for yellow fever, encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, tuberculosis and hepatitis B (unless it’s given as a combined hepatitis A and B vaccine). Rules about prescribed medication Always take a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s letter too, including your personal details, travel dates and details of medication you’re carrying. Your healthcare entitlements If you’re travelling to Switzerland or a country that’s part of the European Economic Area (EEA), apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance) card which entitles you to healthcare equivalent to that provided for residents. Outside the EEA, medical care is usually dependent upon your insurance. Sun Protection Most people still aren’t careful enough about this. In hot sunny climates wear a hat and sunglasses, avoid midday sun, stay hydrated and apply high factor sun lotion regularly.

Beauty Perfect Nails
By Helen Taylor cleaning, cooking, and all those other unavoidable daily chores pose a threat to nails, not to mention cold weather, regular hand washing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Even so, it’s worth establishing a hand and nail care routine and then planning a time every couple of weeks when you can treat yourself to a visit to your local nail salon. There’s more than one option though so we’ve taken an in-depth look at three of the most recent - and popular - nail services.
36
You might spend a lot of time and money buying-up and tryingout the latest skincare, hair care and cosmetic products, but do you pay as much attention to your nails? It’s certainly easy to overlook your hands and nails, but you really shouldn’t, because they’re often as noticeable to new people as your face; after all, a handshake is the first introduction. Un-manicured nails can really let the side down, especially when you’re otherwise wellgroomed and neatly presented. But there’s no denying that it’s hard to keep your nails in tip-top condition. Washing-up,
CND Shellac Nails Shellac has definitely been one of the most popular nail services of recent years. Its simple application, smudgeproof finish and effective staying power have secured legions of loyal followers. Applied much like a regular nail polish, Shellac only requires a few minutes of curing time under a special UV lamp between coats. When you leave the salon your nail polish will be completely dry and you can enjoy chip-proof, glossy, lasting colour that stays looking great for at least 14 days. In fact, Shellac often stays looking so good that it only really needs to be removed when an obvious gap has emerged due to natural nail growth. It also offers the benefit of protecting your nails against breakage meaning you can keep the length much longer
than you might usually be able to. When you are ready to have the Shellac removed, a set of foils soaked in acetone are wrapped round your fingers, although some salons may speed the process by asking you to put your fingertips into a bowl of acetone. This soaking process takes about 10 minutes and then the old polish is gently scraped off and nails buffed to prepare for the new coat. There is no ‘infill’ option – even if your polish still looks great, when it has grown out you’ll need to start again. Shellac isn’t suitable for everyone though; if your nails are weak, brittle or splitting opting for a set of Shellac nails - or any artificial nail enhancement - isn’t the best option. Nails and nail beds need to be healthy before application.
Minx Nails If it’s statement nails you’re after then Minx Nails are the perfect choice for you. Bringing fashion to your fingertips, Minx have been a favourite with celebrities everywhere since stepping into the spotlight a few years ago. Offering a vast choice of designs in showstopping colours, patterns and prints, there’s no chance you’ll ever get bored when you choose a set of Minx nails. Minx work on both natural and artificially enhanced nails. Before application nails are
health & beauty given a basic manicure. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated - that’s why nails and Minx are heated before application begins. The heat allows Minx to take on the natural curve of the nail and bond to the surface effectively. Whilst still underneath a special infrared lamp, the Minx is smoothed out and filed to fit with the nail. The process is very gentle on natural nails and with a waterproof seal, it means they won’t get damaged when you swim, bath, wash-up or do any other day-to-day tasks. The seal is only broken when they are removed. They’ll last around 14 days. Removal is easy - the product is heated up, the seal is broken and the Minx is peeled off.
Long lasting Nail polish
You might wonder why anyone would still have traditional nail polish when Shellac and Minx last so much longer. There are several reasons. Firstly you might want a shade for a special occasion or to go with a particular outfit, without necessarily wanting to keep the same colour for weeks. It’s quicker to put on normal polish and much quicker to take it off. This not only saves time, but will usually be a lower priced treatment or you can do it at home. Particularly for a pedicure, when normal polish will often last weeks anyway, this might be a better option. And the choice of colours is much greater so you can get that perfect match if you need it. Some of the new salon polishes dry very quickly too (such as

Therefore, the council is pleased to share the news that Bill Hawthorne from Green Deal Assessments Kent was awarded the Green Deal Assessor of the Year 2014 Award for the South East Region on Friday 11th April at the South East Regional Green Deal and ECO Awards 2014.
Success for South East Green Deal Assessor The council is proud to be one of eight partner organisations in Europe that is part of the Greenov project.

Greenov aims at developing the economic sector of sustainable renovation mainly by stimulating the innovation capacity of smallto-medium-sized enterprises working in this field. Greenov funding has helped to rejuvenate and regenerate two key buildings in Ashford town centre – the interior of St Mary’s Church and the Ashford Gateway Plus building in Church Road. As an active Greenov Partner, the council is keen to promote the green, sustainable retrofit of buildings, structures and properties, and equally keen to encourage networking opportunities among sustainable businesses. Its role sees it overseeing the involvement of
Bill was instrumental in helping launch the Green Deal project and has regularly supported the Greenov Project for Ashford Borough Council. He has constantly promoted and explained the Green Deal to customers and local communities, showing them how insulating their properties and improving their heating enables them to save money and keep them warm. He has actively encouraged and worked with local installers to become involved with the Green Deal, meaning that this scheme is promoting work for local people to support their local communities. Cllr Graham Galpin, Ashford Borough Council’s portfolio holder for the town centre and urban economy, said: “We are pleased to share this news of Bill’s deserved award. The council wants businesses, as well as home owners, to know that they can reduce their bills through installing energy efficient measures. This is something that’s particularly important for start-ups, who need to know about government grants and the incentives that are out there to help them.” Free Greenov breakfast networking events are held every other month for local companies promoting green retrofit products and services, between 7.30am and 9.00am at the Ashford Gateway Plus building. What is mediation? People in dispute with their neighbours often find it hard to talk to them or make them understand what the problem is. Christmas can also be a stressful time with noisy parties and parking issues with people visiting friends and neighbours.
This is when Mediation can help? Mediation provides a neutral third party to bring them together and find a way forward which is acceptable to both. Disagreements are sorted out confidentially without the trouble and expense of going to court. Using Mediation does not mean that you have complained about your neighbour to some authority which might make the disagreement worse. You are in control at all times. Mediators will never take action or do anything without your permission.
WHO ARE THE MEDIATORS? Ordinary people who have been professionally trained to help with neighbour problems. They are all volunteers they do not take sides, nor do they make judgements on the rights and wrongs of the issues.
WE CAN HELP? With disputes between neighbours, loud music, noisy parties, parking, dogs barking, fences, hedges and boundaries to name just a few. You may not feel able to talk to your neighbour about the problem – you may feel intimidated or perhaps you just do not see the point of complaining any more as nothing seems to change.
WE CAN HELP YOU If you contact us we will LISTEN to your complaint and give you the time you need to talk it through. ASHFORD MEDIATION SERVICE is an INDEPENDENT organisation and most of our services are FREE. Everything that is discussed is CONFIDENTIAL and IMPARTIAL. Finance How to Deal Effectively with Debt By Ann Haldon www.cornerstonewebcontent.com
42
During the year to September 2013, Citizens Advice Bureaux in England and Wales dealt with 7,015 new debt problems every working day. This is the rather startling figure issued by financial capability organisation, The Money Charity, and it illustrates just how people in the UK are struggling to keep on top of money issues.
Where to go for reliable advice The internet provides a valuable source of information and advice on debt and how to deal with it, but sometimes it can be more reassuring to sit down with a financial expert and let them explain the solutions available to you in person. The Citizens Advice service is the obvious choice for debt help, with over 3,300 bureaux around England and Wales. The charity offers free independent advice to all, in confidence, at high street locations including dedicated offices, doctors’ surgeries, courts, and even prisons. They also provide their services via email, the internet and telephone if preferred.
An excellent online source of information is the StepChange Debt Charity, which you may know under its former title of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service. They provide information and advice about all aspects of debt, including tips to avoid it, dealing with it effectively, and what to do if you are overwhelmed by money worries.
Reasons for getting into debt StepChange states that “Overspending is not the main cause of debt problems” and accounts for only 10% of the cases they deal with. So what are the main causes? Well, they could occur for a number of reasons: • Unexpected redundancy, job loss or reduced hours • A life event, such as divorce or separation • Injury or illness • Reduced income • Failure to budget effectively In recent years, job losses and redundancies have accounted for many of the debt problems in this country. The loss of income may have been sudden, and coupled with spiralling living costs, debt can become unavoidable.
What are the best ways to tackle debt? This largely depends on the amount and type of debt concerned. There are ways to quickly reduce household expenses and interest charges though, so think about switching
your energy supplier if you aren’t locked into a deal, and move all credit card debt onto a 0% or low interest card if you can. Below are some easy things to do that will help gain control over your finances: • Make a detailed list of all household income and expenditure, including items such as birthday and Christmas presents • Cancel all unnecessary direct debits and standing orders, and cut back on non-essential spending • Once your outgoings have been reduced or consolidated, make a strict budget to include basic household and living costs • Consider keeping only one credit card, which should be used purely for emergencies
But what if it’s already too late? There are actions you can take as a last resort, such as Individual Voluntary Arrangements, Administration Orders, or declaring bankruptcy. These are all big steps, however, and you need to take professional advice before making such a decision. An important consideration in all this is choosing the right people to help you. You need to approach a charity or other non-profit organisation with counsellors who are paid to help you, rather than make money from you.

Sir Litternot Launches AntiLittering Campaign A new anti-littering campaign has launched in Ashford, with a little help from the noble Sir Litternot. Ashford Borough Council introduced its new champion against litter bugs and mess to the public on Saturday 14th June, with a public exhibition in County Square Shopping Centre. The council is running a special campaign over the summer to show people of all ages to the benefits of keeping our borough beautiful, and how to report littering offences. The character of Sir Litternot has been created by the council’s health, parking and community safety team to encourage people to use litterbins and think about what they do with their waste.
44
The noble knight made his first public appearance in the town centre, along with some of his messy friends. Council staff were also on hand to spread the anti-littering message. Sir Litternot will be visiting schools, public events, and exhibitions to spread the word about littering with his slogan: “Use litterbins and everyone wins!” He will also visit Tenterden town centre. The library at Ashford Gateway Plus has also teamed up with Sir Litternot to run a fun writing competition for the summer, where youngsters can devise a new story for the noble knight and possibly win a fantastic prize.
