Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, It’s June and I can’t believe we are already halfway through the year, where has the time gone? June is fair and fete season so there’s plenty to do this month and many great causes to support, all we need is for the sun to shine. We’ve had so much rain recently, I’m desperate to put to my boots in the cupboard and get the flip flops out! Surely it’s time we had the opportunity to enjoy some summer warmth. This month marks seven years since I put my first edition together and delivered it to the printer. I sat on my patio with a cup of tea wondering what on earth I’d done, I was filled with trepidation at the thought of so many people reading my words and viewing my work. Seven years on and I have no regrets whatsoever. There have been many ups and own downs along the way,

and very little quality time spent with my family in the early days, taking a holiday is a massive challenge, but it’s all been worth it. I feel that I’ve made so many new friends, both readers and advertisers. There have been so many long chats on the phone or via email, it’s a wonder the magazines ever make it to the printer. Thank you so much for making the experience such a positive one, I feel extremely humbled by the feedback I receive. And long may it continue. Have a month!

the garden

The Garden Shed June

By Jackie Witcher - Tenterden & District Horticultural Society

Reading through the June report of 2011 it was April and May that gave us hot weather, this year it was February then March which forced the Spring flowers early. The very chilly April and early May we have had, set everything back again in the garden. Its hard to believe that as we went into May I had daffodils still in bud!! I also noted that last year in April my wisteria was in blossom, this year they started to open their buds middle May but I’m happy to report that the “courtyard” wisteria, which didn’t bloom at all last year, has presented me with two huge tassels of very elegant pink flowers, which look absolutely gorgeous intertwined with the white Clematis Montana. Perhaps next year I may get four? I must admit, I am still learning about wisteria and their complicated pruning, but I shall get there, eventually! Mother Nature once more shows us who’s in charge, and us gardeners? Well we just soldier on, trying to anticipate her moves.

4

The green house is now full and the tomatoes are halfway up the supports. I took a lesson from last year, as you know I planted six plants and couldn’t move in there. This year I have only planted four tomato plants. But to be fair I am trying out for a change the beefsteak variety Favowit, just two, and also two of my all time favourit, Alicante. I must admit taking out the cordons is always a pain, but one year I did try to grow a bush variety and they are so untidy and sprawling to grow that decided maybe taking out cordons isn’t so bad after all. If you want to try a bush variety I grew The Amateur, the flavour was good and it was a reasonable cropper. Can be grown outdoors as well as in the greenhouse. The bonus being is once planted you let them do their own thing. The mini cucumbers are doing well. Talking of which, as we get older aren’t we suppose to learn? I must have missed the boat. Now, I am used to getting just a few maybe five or six cucumber seeds as the ones that I grow are the mini F1 hybrid all female, but I bought a packet of basket tomato seeds and was astounded to find just six seeds in the packet. To rub salt into the wounds, they were planted as norm, and only three germinated. Now at £2.99 for the packet, that was very expensive tomato plants.

They had better taste really good. I shall report back on this one, you never know they may be a prolific cropper, with a superb flavour. I won’t hold my breath! Just a reminder, I always give a weak feed on every water, rather than once a week. It gives to a more steady strong growth to the plants. Out on the vege patch things are up and growing well. I am keeping a wary eye out for the dreaded pigeons and am at the ready with my fencing should the attacks begin. We have already had some of the lettuce seedlings in our sandwiches for lunch, and have already planted another tray up for when we have eaten the existing tray. The runner beans are in and, as usual, I started them off early in pots in the greenhouse, planting them out middle May interspaced with a normally planted bean. This not only covers for “eventualities”, but makes for a thicker bean row. In the vege patch, the whole area was given a feed of XXX manure, (I always warn my neighbour I am doing this as it does pong a bit!), a couple of weeks prior to planting which was lightly forked in. I decided to plant the Helga beans in a different place and have put them alongside the greenhouse. This will do two things, beans love a sunny position so hopefully will increase yield, and secondly give shade to the greenhouse.

the garden

Now I did say that I would report back on the Lilly bulblets. Surprisingly they have done very well, virtually all of them have grown, and some are even showing flower buds. When these have finished I shall lift them and plant on into normal pots to over winter, then next year treat as normal bulbs. Again I shall keep you posted. Out of room again. Now the question is, its 12 midday and one hour to lunch, do I have coffee and cake or not? Oh come on I’m not that good, and there’s a nice slice of cherry cake with my name on it. OK, I’ll make it a small slice. JW

Making An Entrance A hallway is like a handshake: the introduction to your home, creating a look and feel that should be both attractive and welcoming, as well as providing useful storage, explains Katherine Sorrell. Design and decorating

10

Width is the crucial issue in hallways, and unless you’re prepared to do some substantial building work and remove a wall, you’re probably stuck with what you have. To increase the feeling of space in a narrow hallway, use pale colours and add large mirrors (ideal for checking your reflection just before you leave the house, too). Keep the space as clear as possible by adding only the most essential items of slender storage furniture, and using the full height of your walls rather than encroaching on floor space. If, on the other hand, you have a large and spacious hallway – lucky you! Think of it as an extra living space and make the most of it by adding a sofa or chairs, bookcases or

a writing desk. For plenty of inspirational ideas, see Hallways, Corridors and Staircases by Leslie Geddes-Brown, with fabulous photography by Christopher Drake (Ryland, Peters & Small, £25). Whatever the size of your hall, consider it as a linking room and make sure your choice of decorative schemes works well when doorways to other rooms are open. If you have chosen a pale colour scheme for the walls, woodwork could be slightly darker for interest. Halls that see a lot of wear and tear could be painted with an extra-tough paint, or clad with tongue-and-groove panelling, tiles or hard-wearing wallpaper.

the home Fabulous ooring Halls and stairs are high-traffic areas, so ensure that your flooring is non-slip, durable, resistant to dirt and simple to clean – if you can mop it, so much the better. Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or colourful Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet require only some regular polishing or waxing. Cheap wood laminates may not last too long in such a well-used space. Lino or vinyl can look impressive, too, especially when laid in patterns. Carpet, however, is more problematic as you’ll need to choose a colour or pattern that won’t show the dirt – and make sure that it is suitable for a hallway: an 80:20 twist classified for heavy domestic use is often the best.

cleaners. The type of storage you choose is always best moulded around what you need to store, how much space it will take and how frequently you need to access it. The main choice is between built-in, hidden storage or open, display-type storage. The former is best when space is tight – slender floor-to-ceiling cupboards with plain doors, (perhaps painted the same colour as the walls, or even mirrored to maximise light) ranked along one wall, will hold masses yet be hardly noticeable. On the other hand, you could make a statement with an eclectic selection of free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, dressers, baskets, shelves and so on. If necessary, fit hooks or pulleys high up on walls to hold bikes, and perhaps a coat stand or row of pegs for everyday coats and bags. Umbrella stands and boot racks are ideal for spacious, countrystyle halls. Somewhere to keep post and keys is a good idea, too, whether a bowl and rack on a dresser or a small, wall-mounted cupboard and set of hooks. If you have lots of books or delicate items to display, a shelf running the length of the hallway above head height can be extremely useful. For times when space is really hard to find, it is even possible to build storage drawers into the treads of a wooden staircase.

Cosy and bright Under-floor heating is ideal for narrow halls, but do check that it will be compatible with your flooring. On the other hand, if there’s room, you could opt for eye-catching radiators, perhaps a period-style cast-iron column or an eyecatching modern type. Hall lighting doesn’t need to be bright enough for reading, but it should be welcoming and lead the eye into your home: it could be an amazing chandelier (given high enough ceilings) or a series of recessed ceiling downlights. In a narrow hall, avoid wall lights – they will just act as obstacles.

Storage Most people store a variety of things in their halls, from coats, scarves and hats to phone books, buggies or vacuum

11

A lift-up lid makes this hall bench by Camel & Yak a great piece of dual-function furniture. ÂŁ450, Not on the High Street (notonthehighstreet.com; 0845 259 1359).

Seasonal Delights

Mackerel Serves 2 Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 15 minutes Heat the butter in a sauté pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes.

12

Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice and add the zest. Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes. Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fillet in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may find. Season the fish then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side. Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes.

“This is Americana with a twist, from the clash of bluegrass banjo with moody, experimental accordion to throat singing and folk systems music to atmospheric fife-backed blues... Groanbox are true originals.” The Guardian Groanbox, the North American trio of Paul Clifford, Cory Seznec and Michael WardBergeman, are a musical hybrid of ideas and ideals. At first glance a roots band steeped in the traditions of American music, they play with all the guts of rock and roll and all the soul of the wandering troubadour. But somewhere along the way, that troubadour turned off the road and, setting sail from the melting pot of New Orleans, began a journey that would take their sound to new, unchartered territories with influences from around the world. ‘The trio’s brand of Americana has less to do with the traditional backwoods fare than with the mongrelisation of several musical strands into something that can only be described as shamanic. You get the feeling that a large amount of this material was born out of extended sessions round a fire in the dead of night. It’s spooky but also often hilarious. If there ware immediate comparisons to be made it’s with the transposed delta blues of Captain Beefheart or junkyard grind of Tom Waits. It’s dirty, unwashed and tremendous fun.”

wit & wisdom It Is Time! How do you know when it is time to “hang up the car keys”? I say when your dog has this look on his face! A picture is worth a thousand words!

26 After f a busy b day, d an elderly ld l f friend d of mine settled down in his train from Waterloo for a nap as far as his destination at Winchester, when the chap sitting near him hauled out his mobile and started up:“Hi darling it‛s Peter, I‛m on the train - yes, I know it‛s the 6.30 not the 4.30 but I had a long meeting - no, not with that floozie from the typing pool, with the boss - no darling you‛re the only one in my life - yes, I‛m sure, cross my heart” etc., etc. This was still going on at Wimbledon, when the young woman opposite, driven beyond endurance, yelled at the top of her voice, “Hey, Peter, turn that flipin‛ phone off and come back to bed!!”

I Trust You Can All Relate To This Amusing Little Ditty! I have a little Satnav It sits there in my car A Satnav is a driver’s friend It tells you where you are I have a little Satnav I’ve had it all my life It does more than the normal one My Satnav is my wife It gives me full instructions On exactly how to drive “It’s thirty miles an hour” it says “And you’re doing thirty five” It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it’s never ever Safe to overtake It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene It lists the vehicles just in front It lists those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear I’m sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice It fills me up with counselling Each journey’s pretty fraught So why don’t I exchange it And get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house Makes sure I’m properly fed It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed!
