Welcome Hi everyone, I can’t believe it’s November again, the year has just flown by. This time last year the roof was about to be removed from my kitchen in order to fix a number of damaging leaks. It’s not the best time of year to expose a kitchen to the elements but it couldn’t be helped. I think I speak for everyone involved when I say there was a considerable amount of trepidation, it wasn’t a straight forward job, in fact I’ll be telling you all about it in a future edition. As it turned out it was an unusually mild November, I’m pleased to say, but we were also in the extremely capable hands of Hamlet Buildings, who did a fantastic job for us. Now, one year on, I have a wonderfully warm, dry and bright kitchen that is a joy to spend time in. In fact I spend a great deal of time in it, especially at deadline time when I’m working all the hours available, and raiding the cupboards for comfort food, just to help me through (I’ve just polished off a syrup pudding with custard!). The big event for this month has to be Bonfire Night, this year the Farriers Arms in Mersham are holding their annual firework display on Saturday the 7th. The Walnut Tree in Aldington are also holding a FREE firework display, this is a little earlier on the 30th October, you should receive your magazine just in time for this one. There will also be children’s entertainment featuring “Sugar Plum Princess”. Whatever you do enjoy yourselves and stay safe. Until next time, have a great month!

Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too.

4

If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for

plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’

and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

07966 796 498 / 01233 733373 Logheat is a family run business committed to

supplying premium firewood. We are located in Shadoxhurst Nr. Ashford Kent and are suppliers of the finest quality kiln dried hardwood and kindling. We offer consistent high quality, the convenience of online ordering and a friendly and efficient delivery service.

the garden use less logs to produce the same heat output as traditionally seasoned firewood. Our kindling is also produced in the same way. Seasoned logs are dried naturally in the traditional way at our farm, with the timber stacked in the open for a year or two to allow it to dry in the sun and wind. Seasoned firewood will not give quite the same heat output as kiln dried logs, but it does make a good lower cost option for all open fires, stoves and log burners.

All of our firewood is a mixture of quality hardwood, namely Oak, Ash, Hornbeam, Beech, Birch and Sycamore, which is native to Kentish woodlands. We work hard to minimise our environmental impact and always buy from a sustainable source. Our cord timber is legally sourced from local coppiced woodlands that have been granted felling licenses from the Forestry Commission. Coppicing is an ancient land management practice that encourages healthy tree growth and regeneration of flora and fauna.

7

Our most popular logs are kiln dried logs which are naturally seasoned then further dried in our biomass wood fired kiln. They are suitable for use in open fires, stoves and wood burners. The low moisture content of kiln dried firewood ensures that it is easier to light, produces more heat, burns cleaner and more efficiently, meaning you

Mowgli by Montgomery Vets

H

ello everyone, Mowgli here. How are all of you? Ebony and I are fine but our humans have just come back from holiday. They took the liberty of going away for a whole week! I have written before about how much responsibility falls to us felines when the humans go awaywe have to ensure the other animals in the household behave and get enough food and water, we have to keep a constant eye on how everything else in the house is running and we also have to look after the pet-sitters. It got me thinking to what the perfect holiday for a cat would be.

F 8

or a start we think it would be a very warm place. Outside it would always be sunny and inside the heating would always be on. And not just on- on high. As to accommodation design Ebony and I think there would be lots of rooms facing different directions so they would get the sun at different times of day. In each room there would be a variety of things to sleep on- double beds with fluffy feathered duvets, armchairs filled with soft cushions, radiator beds and of course cardboard boxes. No cat can resist a cardboard box. The next thing we considered was the menu. We think the ideal cat holiday is ‘all inclusive’ so that food is on offer all day and you can eat as much as you like. Maybe an ongoing buffet of the top food brands with some fresh items (mice maybe, some roast chicken and steamed fish?) on the side? Each room would also have refillable bowls of Dreamies. Heaven for any cat… Next to think about was activities. One human available per cat 24/7 equipped with a laser pointer, a catnip toy on a string, a lifelike mouse to chase, rolled up balls of newspaper and paper-bags to jump into. Ebony and I think this all sounds amazing, and that any caring human should ensure their cats get a well earned holiday like this every year. Just to make things even better Ebony and I thought of a brief list of things that would be banned from the holiday accommodation: hoovers, crying babies, loud alarm noises, and goats (goats are so stupid!) What do the rest of you cats think,

do you agree or have we missed anything important out?

A

nyway, everything was fine while the humans were away and our lives were made a little easier by not having to look after those silly goats. Goats are so stupid…. They have gone on a holiday of their own- just down the lane to one of the paddocks outside the zoo. They are keeping a lonely zebra company before she is exported to her new home. Clive and Josh visit them often and they are all very happy together. The paddock is massive and they are being looked after very nicely by the keepers. They never leave the zebra’s side and apparently all sleep in a heap together. Sounds like a pretty good goat holiday to me- will be just our luck that it will make them very naughty when they come home again!

somewhat of a misnomer now as it can cover all music before about 1830. “St Mary’s is a unique building which now lends itself as a centre of excellence and I am delighted to be able to promote top-class recitals hopefully for a long time”. To that end, we have had the full support and help of Stour Music to launch this project.

Saxon Shore Early Music Kenardington A New Music Series for East Kent

10

After thirty years and two hundred and sixtyeight events in running the Tudeley Festival near Tonbridge, Artistic Director Dr. Stephen Coles, since moving to Aldington three years ago, has been looking for a venue to continue his passion of providing first class concerts of early music. After visiting many local churches, quite by chance was told by a friend about the reordering of St. Mary’s, Kenardington. He was bowled over by what he found. He enthused: “Not only has the church seating for 150, all seats are in the Nave and blessed with superb lighting and most importantly of all, underfloor heating! This means we can arrange concerts all year round without the worry of cold and damp. Apart from that, there is a very high ceiling with a 2½ second echo when empty, which with an audience will ensure a wonderful mellow acoustic. The provision of the pentice offers facilities for dinner for fortyeight or refreshments for a good hundred.” Dr. Coles was well aware of the existing international early music festival at Stour Music that occurs annually in the last two weeks of June. He regards the planned series at Kenardington to complement those at Boughton Aluph and elsewhere by providing further, if sometimes somewhat smaller, events from October through to May. “Early Music is

The Gala Champagne Reception Opening Event is on Saturday November 14 and features The Bach Players, seven musicians performing manuscripts of music found in Bach’s Library and which influenced his famous Flute Suite in B minor that ends the concert. Interestingly, one piece is dedicated to ‘La Comptesse de Sandwich’. Saturday December 12 welcomes the foottapping medieval group, Joglaresa with a Christmas programme entitled Sing we Yule! Dr Coles concluded: “Our first season offers something for everyone. I have had such fantastic support from the incumbent Rev’d Whateley and other friends. As in any new venture there is always a risk but with such an outstanding and user- friendly venue, we can guarantee music making of the highest order in wonderful surroundings. The music we will present is accessible to all and despite its name, early music, is not just for cognoscenti and I promise they will be both enjoyable and educative for the historically informed performance angle, bringing both familiar works and lesser known but nonetheless beautiful for the sheer enjoyment that this music offers. I hope that music lovers in this area will come to see for themselves and help make this a success not only this year but for many many years to come.

Home & Interiors Buying a Bespoke Kitchen

14

If you have an awkwardly shaped room or want more than one-size-fits-all options, then your obvious choice is a custom-made kitchen.

of it, whether chaotic family meals or haute cuisine dinner parties, and will use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. What’s more, you’re guaranteed that it’s one of a kind.

Buying a bespoke kitchen is like asking a tailor to make you a dress. Rather than squeezing into a ready-made garment that’s just like thousands of others, you get a unique and perfectly fitting outfit that makes the most of your best bits and disguises the worst. It’s attractive, comfortable and, whilst a little more costly (okay, sometimes a lot more costly), it will always look good and should last a lifetime. In kitchen terms, this means that a bespoke commission can cope with wonky walls, strange dimensions and interesting architectural features, will adapt to whatever’s required

Why buy bespoke? Buy an off-the-peg kitchen and your choices are limited. Yes, there’ll be a selection of door styles, carcass sizes and, hopefully, several different worktops, but that’s about it. If your wall is a few centimetres longer than the standard run of cupboards, you’ll end up with a gap. It might be called a tray slot or space for a pull-out towel rail, but it’s still a gap. A bespoke kitchen, on the other hand, will be built to the exact dimensions of the room, large or small. You want extra-high base units? You’ve got them, to the millimetre. Extra-deep worktops? No problem. A

combination of different, perhaps unusual, materials? Just say the word. With bespoke you can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint (if you’re having a painted kitchen, you could match the shade to, say, your favourite mug). You can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like, or even go so far as to have special matching sockets fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you will end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’ All in the detail With a bespoke kitchen, no detail is spared. It may be the dovetailing of the drawers or the way veneers are matched so they run perfectly across from one cupboard or drawer to the next. It may be the combination of base and wall cupboards, perhaps with open shelves and free-standing dressers; or it may be the size and shape of the island unit – square, rectangular, curved, stepped or any design you like. Special appliances or cooking utensils can be measured and interiors designed to suit, for the ultimate, ‘everything in its place’ room that combines good looks with functionality. Working with a designer Before contacting a bespoke

kitchen company, it’s wise to start considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could simply be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be handbuilt and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and

the home

templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to finetune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result.

“Good for the environment and pocket” Robin Tinkler lives with his partner in Willesborough near Ashford, Kent Having retired from the electrical supply industry in February 2010, he now works part-time running his own massage therapist business, ‘Massage by Rob’. “I’m qualified in holistic massage therapy,” explains Robin. “Some of my clients have problem areas I help with, but most come purely for the relaxation and quality time.” Perfect in today’s fast-paced busy world! Robin’s main hobby is collecting Honiton Pottery from Devon, and through this he is a member of the Honiton Pottery Collectors’ Society and chairman of their committee. The group provides the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded people and new friends. “It’s more of a social thing than anything,” says Robin. Less grime and more shine Robin decided to invest in a Harvey Water Softener after having a conversation with his neighbour who had one: “She said it had helped with her husband’s skin condition. I’ve had a few problems with my skin over the years so thought it would help me too, and it has, particularly on my face.” But the real benefits of getting a Harvey Water Softener for Robin have been a noticeable difference in the cost and scale build-up. Robin says: “The main aspect has been the savings I’ve made on consumables such as washing-up liquid and detergent for the washing machine. And the sinks are a lot cleaner too, not just the taps, I no longer get a build-up of scale and grime and don’t have to clean them as much.” He’s also noticed a big difference in the kettle which used to be full of scale: “There’s absolutely no scale in the kettle now with the Harvey system!” Robin has recently replaced his water tank too, and is confident the new one will last much longer

now he has soft water as it will prevent it from furring up and becoming blocked. “I was told the pipes will also clear of scale now over time,” says Robin, “which will make my water and heating more efficient.” So good for the environment and the pocket then! No pressure Robin was very impressed with the service he received from Harvey Water Softeners and is happy to recommend them. “The representative who came to explain about the softener did so very clearly. He brought a demonstration kit and there was no pressure to buy. He just presented the facts.” “And the financial side was very easy too,” adds Robin, “as I was offered deferred and interest free payments. The installer was also nice and efficient and consulted with me on where to place the unit.” No electricity needed Another bonus for Robin was the fact the Harvey Water Softener units don’t require electricity to run. “It was a major selling point that it didn’t need any electrical supply as it runs itself mechanically. This meant it could be positioned in the cupboard in our lobby area which doesn’t have an electrical supply.” Overall, Robin has seen many benefits from his softener and believes it’s a worthwhile investment that just keeps giving.

Cake and Bake Snickerdoodles

18

These classic American cookies are crisp at the edges, chewy in the middle and have a delicious cinnamon sugar coating. Try them warm from the oven with a milkshake or hot chocolate – and if you need an excuse, America is celebrating Thanksgiving this month!

Ingredients:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper.

• 115g unsalted butter, softened

2. Place the butter and muscovado sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamed. Beat in the maple syrup. Sift over the flour and beat in with the wooden spoon to form a rough dough.

• 100g dark muscovado sugar • 2 tbsp maple syrup • 175g self-raising flour • 1 tbsp granulated sugar • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Makes 16 Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling

3. Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Divide and shape the dough into about16 walnutsized balls (keep them roughly shaped – not smooth) and roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place, well spaced, on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball of mixture slightly with your fingertips. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the cookies. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

TIP

Add some chopped pecans or toasted chopped hazelnuts to the cookie dough for a crunchy texture, or top with white or dark chocolate chips just before baking.

Movember: Because Men’s Health Matters

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

MOVEMBER.COM changing the face of mens health

22

Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache. What is Movember? The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”. The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems. So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries. “In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder. Why Focus On Men’s Health? In 2011, the average UK life expectancy was 82.6 years for women but just 78.7 years for men, who were 14% more likely to get cancer and 32% more likely to die from it. Testicular cancer is

the most common cancer in 25-49 year olds, but highly curable. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point. The Foundation believes the main reasons for men’s poor health are: • Lack of awareness and understanding of men’s health issues • Men’s reluctance to discuss their health and feelings or take action when they’re unwell • Engaging in risky activities • Mental health stigmas The Foundation’s most recent research showed that 99% of Movember participants talked to someone about their health, 75% were more aware of potential health issues and 62% had seen a doctor, or intended to, to discover their ‘key numbers’.

a healthy life’. if there’s nothing wrong, your mind is put at rest. Attend that prostate examination and check your testes regularly (http://www.yourprivates.org.uk/ provides a useful guide).

The Movember Foundation’s Advice for Men Know your key numbers – ‘one of the most important things you can do,’ whatever your age. Track your body mass index, weight, waistline measurement, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Know your family history – including illnesses suffered by family members who have passed away. Keep moving – maintain (or work up to) 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 2-3 days a week, avoid sitting for too long and stay on the move.

Stay mentally healthy – spend time doing things you find enjoyable and relaxing. Be proactive about your mental health.

Take action early – ‘Early diagnosis is often key to living

Don’t smoke- smoking doubles heart disease risk and makes you 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Eat well – think moderation and variety. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts and minerals, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or high saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt. Sleep well – lack of sleep and poor quality sleep can damage your immune system and increase appetite and vulnerability to stress.

Drink alcohol only in moderation Wear sunscreen – and check skin changes with your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically increases melanoma survival rates. To find out more, visit https:// uk.movember.com/

Says Tenterden Chamber of Commerce events officer Jonathan Medes: “Tenterden Christmas Market, with its wonderful atmosphere, has become a festive season ‘must’ for people across the county. For the first time, we’ve had to switch the event to a Saturday and extend the hours from 10am until late, and anticipation is building strongly”.
