Welcome Hi everyone, Autumn has arrived and as I write the rain is pouring down outside. I’ve already been tempted to put the heating on a couple of times, it looks like it’s time to rake out the wellies and winter woolies again. I know it’s definitely Autumn because all the popular TV programmes are back! Strictly is here and The Great British Bake Off has turned me into a domestic goddess (I try!) I’ve been inspired this year, especially since Ugne added Amarula to her crème brûlée. I’ve been experimenting and baking like crazy. I’ve been trying to find as many ways as possible to feed this years crop of plums to my family. I may have to learn how to make plum wine because my freezer is still full from last years batch. Luckily my in-laws are big fans, and they are now used to the fact that if they come to dinner, whatever they get for dessert, it will have plums in it somewhere. Also this month the NHS launch their Stoptober campaign for those who would like to give smoking a break or give up completely. Apparently, if you can give it up for 28 days you are five times more likely to give it up for good. I’m not a smoker but I do know how difficult it can be to change habits and adopt new ones, especially when you rather enjoy the old ones but you know they’re not good for you. But one month passes in a flash, in fact as far as I’m concerned the whole summer just passed in a flash. Good luck if you are giving it a go. Until next time, have a great month!

Leaf Litter by Pippa Greenwood
Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, tree-loving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!
4
At this time of year most of us are feeling as if we are being buried alive by falling leaves. Yes, the vast majority of leaves that are dropping from our own and our neighbours’ trees are pretty enough, and for a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges look stunning both on and off the tree. The problem is that it seems as if there is a virtually endless supply of them and after that initial flurry of pretty colour, the positive feeling soon starts to diminish. Leaves that are allowed to build up in your garden can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses,

often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something and the sooner you get started the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive (provided you don’t rake too deeply and end up ploughing up the stones too!). If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves (or worse still, a big lawn and lots of leaves too) then the easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grass-collector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’ll usually end up hand picking, or if time and energy
is in short supply you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, of course, be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). Great, so you spend a lot of time and effort collecting up all these leaves. Then what? Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire: make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry… and then leave them be. If you

can chop larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) up first, they’ll rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. It is worth avoiding very spiky leaves (the spines seem to withstand rotting and get you later!), and any that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. If you want to speed the process up you can add a leaf mould activator, which is available from garden centres. If space, time or money is short then you can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a good quality bin liner - not a really thin one - and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish.
Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere that you have the space - perhaps behind the shed, garage or greenhouse. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. You can see these on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/ products.

Mowgli by Montgomery Vets
H
ello everyone, Mowgli here. Beginning to get cold, isn’t it? It is the time of year that all us cats snuggle up a little bit closer to any source of heat we can find. The humans always think this is due to extreme affection. It is of course also due to our attachment to humans but the warmth is also very useful..... We have had a few guests recently and we have of course done our duty and snuggled up to them as well...
W 10
e always meet our guests at the door. In the old days in the old house we used to run full-speed into the kitchen and then skid on the lino until we landed at the guests’ feet. These days there is no lino but we still make an impressive entrance if we can. After a greeting I take over and jump onto the top of any bags the guests might be carrying. The smaller the bag the better as this lets me show off my balancing skills. I have to admit though that I have pulled a few threads and made a few holes in some bags but no-one ever seems to mind. Wheeled suitcases are worth a mention here as they provide us with ultimate cat entertainment and the guests often obligingly wheel me about the house while I ride them.
T
he guests’ room is also very important of course. We both like helping Clive and Jane change beds-we run under the fitted sheets and get in the duvet covers. It’s a great game. We have pulled a few threads and made a few holes in those too...... When we have eventually been extracted from the duvet cover we like to make large nests in the beds to make sure they are comfortable. It is great that I have white hair and Ebony has black hair as between us we can leave very obvious hairs on almost any colour duvet. We also like the guest towels as they are fluffy and white- very snuggly!
O
ur last job as hosts is to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep for our guests and that the shower is working well. Ebony and I check on guests frequently throughout the night and also act as their alarm call at about 6am when we have our breakfast. Some of the guests don’t seem to appreciate this and shut their door. We get round this by scratching at the door and yowling. After a bit of this Jane usually drags us into their room and shuts us in with them. I think she is just jealous about us purring and sleeping on other peoples’ beds. Lastly, I always take a shower with the guests if I can- I can open the shower cubicle door so I burst in, pat the droplets of water and race

Dog Coats: Necessity, Not a Fashion Statement
When it comes to fashion for dogs, you may scoff at the thought of your pet wearing the latest designer polo neck or woolly jumper. Traditional dog coats have been around for a long time, however, and are an essential item in a dog’s wardrobe. When your dog gets wet, although its coat has some water-repellent qualities, it still takes a long time to dry, which makes the dog susceptible to colds and chills and puts a strain on its immune system. The right choice of dog coat will depend on a number of factors, including: • The size of your dog
11
• Your budget • Whether you want a single waterproof coat or one with a separate fleece • Whether the dog jumps into water, or if it is a hunting dog Measuring from the base of the dog’s neck to the base of its tail will help you decide on the right size, although most coats of this type are adjustable. Fleece linings will keep your dog cosy, with some having a ‘hood’ or a collar that is lifted over the dog’s head and neck, offering extra protection from the elements. As far as material goes, microfibre has become a popular choice for dog owners as it offers their pet warmth, waterresistance and windproofing. Quilted and padded coats are often bulky, and although they are warm, may be restrictive to wear. By Ann Haldon

What are the different styles of shutters? There are three types of shutters: plantation, solid and cafĂŠ style. Most people go for the plantation style, which have slats (also known as louvers) that rotate open and closed to control light levels. Solid shutters are ideal for those wanting to create a more traditional look, and are designed to be folded back during the day and closed at night.
12
Extremely ( ! shutters can be made to ' any size or shape
Shutters provide a chic and stylish alternative to blinds and curtains and are a cost-effective way to completely update the look and feel of a room. They are more hygienic too as they simply wipe clean and don't absorb the dust, unlike curtains or blinds. Shutters offer you a great deal of flexibility, for instance you can have different slat sizes, different colours and different panel designs. You also have more control over how much light enters the room. With blinds, there's relatively little light control flexibility. Shutters can also save you valuable pennies as they provide further insulation, which is particularly appealing in these cash strapped times. And finally, shutters last longer and are more durable.
CafÊ style shutters are popular in restaurants and cafes, hence the name. With this style, the shutters normally cover just the bottom half of the window. Shutters can help retain heat – a bonus for household bills
With tier-on-tier shutters, there are two sets of shutters, one above the other. You can open each set individually, which gives you more flexibility and more light control. These are ideal if you have larger bay windows.
Which styles would suit which types of windows? Solid shutters are mainly used in Victorian and older style properties. They keep out more light and offer the ultimate privacy. This type of shutter is perfect in a room with a simple and minimal dĂŠcor, and works particularly well in country cottages where they look quaint folded back during the day. Solid shutters with a solid lower half but with movable slats on top work fabulously on French doors, giving a lovely Continental feel that will certainly remind you of your summer holiday.

With the plantation shutters, you can really get creative with the design, the colour and the rods, and as such these types of shutters suit most spaces. Can shutters still be fitted in awkward spaces? Shutters are perfect for awkward places! “Wouldn’t be without it” Faye and David Prigmore live in Pluckley near Ashford in Kent They both work as couriers which gives them the flexibility to spend time with their three daughters. “Two of them have horses and compete in eventing, so I help out as their groom,” says Faye. “Everything from making the tea to washing the horses down, walking the courses, moving fence jumps and helping with the physio.” It may not be glamourous, but Faye enjoys it! And their other daughter is also very active as a keen netball player.
14
“We used to have lots of animals as well – dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens – but not at the moment,” says Faye. “Although a dog would be nice again when the time is right.” Boiler breakdown The couple decided to get a water softener after years of putting up with very hard water and excess limescale. Faye explains: “The water here is very hard and very limey. We used to buy small tablets to put in our water to help but it was getting very expensive. We decided getting a water softener would be better and should end up paying for itself.” After a huge build-up of limescale – half a tank full – led to the demise of their boiler, and problems in their washing machine and dishwasher, the couple made the decision to get a Harvey Water Softener. And immediately saw the benefits.
we still get a very good lather,” says Faye. “And you can see the difference too. We have shiny taps now and the glass on the shower door is much clearer. Before you would run your hand down the shower door and feel the limescale - it was so bad.” The couple has noticed the water tastes slightly different, which is fine, and cleaning takes a lot less time as there is a lot less limescale! David adds: “The water also feels different. When I wash my face with soap and rinse it with fresh water afterwards my face still feels soft.” User-friendly and cost-effective They also find the Harvey Water Softener unit user-friendly and cost-effective. Salt is necessary to keep a water softener running and the water soft. Harvey Water Softeners use salt blocks which are designed to be compact and easy to store and replace. “Six blocks cost around £16,” says David, “and we find two big blocks last us a month to six weeks.” Recommended Both Faye and David have recommended getting a water softener to family and friends. They have had their Harvey Water Softener for a year now and haven’t looked back. “We wouldn’t be without it now,” says Faye. “We have definitely seen the benefits and feel it has paid for itself.”
The Harvey water softener fits neatly under a kitchen sink

Cake and Bake Halloween Macaroons For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons?
Ingredients: • 230g icing sugar, sifted
16
• 75g ground almonds • 2 large egg whites • 50g caster sugar • Orange and black food colouring gel • 55g unsalted butter, softened • tsp vanilla extract
Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling
TIP The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days. Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.
1. Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery. Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside. 2. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue. Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange. 3. Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted. 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle. Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3. 5. Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 6. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons. 7. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons.

Beauty Tresses that Impress by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk Whether long, short or in-between, afro, curly, wavy or straight, our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. The right style can detract from imperfections, and tells the world a little something about our personality. It can make us more self-assured; more confident in the workplace and social situations. And, of course, it’s not just about the cut; having the right tools in your arsenal at home can make all the difference.
20
I have a confession – until recently I didn’t own a hairbrush. I just used my daughter’s, which is shaped like Hello Kitty, but does the job. Thankfully, now I am the proud owner of a Wet Brush, the US’s bestselling hairbrush, which detangles wet or dry hair like a dream. My daughter is also a fan, as it doesn’t pull as much, which is making mornings rather more pleasant. The Wet Brush costs £11.99 from www.cultbeauty.co.uk. If you only make one change to your haircare regime, swap to a gentler, more natural shampoo. Most high street shampoos contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can strip your hair of essential oils, leaving it limp and lifeless. A gentler alternative is Green People Quinoa & Artichoke Shampoo and Conditioner (£9.95 each), which are designed to nourish and protect damaged hair. The quinoa and artichoke leaf work together to condition, minimise frizz, strengthen and protect from UV radiation. Curly and coily haired women have cause to celebrate, with the release of Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash, £17.50, which cleanses hair, while preserving moisture and minimising frizz. The key ingredients are organic babassu oil and baobab oil. Subrina Kidd, Aveda UK’s Textured Hair Specialist, explains, “Regular cleansing shampoos can often leave hair looking
and feeling dry and brittle – this low-lather, sulfate-free formula will refresh and revive the hair texture or curl pattern without removing necessary moisture. To avoid tangling, sub-divide the hair into four sections, massage the Co-Wash into each section, comb through and then rinse thoroughly.” Looking for a salon-style deep conditioning treatment? Try Philip Kingsley Geranium & Neroli Elasticizer, £31.50, a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment that contains neroli, geranium, lavender, rose and orange oils. The Elasticizer has been around for a few years now, and has won numerous awards and accolades. This new version looks set to be just as successful, as it leaves hair soft, bouncy and easier to style. While you can just apply it a few minutes before showering, for best results lather it on before bed. It may seem pricey, but a little goes a long way, so you’ll get a fair few weekly treatments from each jar. Intensive conditioning treatments tend to work best if you cover up with a shower cap. Of course, you could just pick up a simple see-through one for a couple of pounds, but how much more fun is this one from The Vintage Cosmetic Company?
Lot of brands have limited edition products out for breast cancer awareness at the moment. One of our favourites is Origins Pink Ribbon Make A Difference Rejuvenating Hand Treatment, £19.50. It’s really rich, with extracts of Rose of Jericho and meadowfoam seed oil, so ideal for dry, dehydrated hands. What’s more, £5 from each sale will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

feasible zone your room into a sleep zone, work zone and play zone. Using electronic devices before bed has been proved to affect the time it takes to fall to sleep and the quality of sleep enjoyed.
Sleep Tips to Survive Freshers' Week and Beyond Students tempted to party hard as they start university life should not neglect their sleep. That's according to The Sleep Council who are warning students about the dangers of lack of sleep as they start, or return, to university. "As students leave home and adjust to independent life and study, it is important they keep to good sleep routines. While a certain amount of full-on partying is to be expected during freshers week, good health and high grades are continually found to link in with getting enough of the right kind of sleep," explains Lisa Artis, of The Sleep Council. Research has shown that from age 14-20 waking and sleeping times get later giving a classic teenage nocturnal sleeping pattern, but beware of burning the candle at both ends. "Teenagers and young adults need eight to nine hours sleep a night. Not getting enough sleep can lead to weight problems as exhausted people make poor food choices and suffer with mental health issues, lowered immunity, stress and depression," says Lisa. "Studies have also highlighted that students habitually going to bed late take a hit on their academic results. There's a growing body of evidence that demonstrates how much the sleep we get impacts on how we perform. A good night's sleep triggers changes in the brain that help to improve memory, meaning you'll be much better able to remember what you learnt the day before." But for those initial weeks discovering the joys of student life, The Sleep Council has tips to keep sleep deprivation to a minimum. • Arrange your new digs so that the bed is an area for sleeping. If possible try to keep laptops and screens out of the bedroom, but if this isn't
• What's your bed like? A good bed really does make a difference to how well you sleep. If you're in halls of residence, or a new bed isn't an option, think about buying a mattress topper or investing in a good quality pillow to support your head and neck. • Try a couple of hours of snoozing before hitting the student union bar. You'll feel more alert and ready to party, BUT - allow at least 20 minutes after waking up before you do anything important. It takes that long for the brain to wake up. • After a big weekend's partying, use the early part of the week to get in some extra "recovery" sleep. • You can also "store up" extra sleep in advance. If you're not too excited about going to uni, bank some extra snooze over the last couple of nights at home prior to the big move. Your body will be slightly more resilient to any sleep deprivation. • If you're struggling the next day coffee, tea and chocolate all contain caffeine and related chemicals which promote wakefulness. However, refrain from using in the hours before bedtime as they hinder sleep. • Lavender, passion flower, hops, orange blossom, Scot's pine, camomile and peppermint all claim to promote sleep. And milky night time drinks really do help bring on the Zzzs. • If you know you have a long weekend of partying ahead, you can help keep your biological clock tuned in to your sleep with anchor sleep. Aim to have at least four hours sleep at the same time every night/morning (e.g. 3-7am). This seems to help keep your sleep clock regular. • Alcohol may allow you to go to sleep if it relaxes you, or it may make you unconscious, but it's seriously unhelpful to a good night's kip. You don't breathe as well and the sleep is more broken because your brain reacts against being unconscious. Alcohol will also dehydrate you, so drink plenty of water before going to bed.
