Welcome Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well and just itching to get back to some sort of normality. I’ve already booked my hair appointment and I’m keeping everything crossed that my niece’s wedding goes ahead in June, it’s been moved twice! We’ve lived in the same house now for over 30 years and during the interminable lockdown that we’ve been living through for the last few months, I’ve tried to make the most of the time by having a clear out. I will keep my language family friendly, but wow, we’ve bought some, err, ‘stuff’ over the years,. My son is 25 but I have a cupboard full of toys from his childhood. I can’t bear to throw out things that are perfectly serviceable. Still one man’s rubbish is another man’s gold as they say and thank goodness for the community Facebook and Freecycle groups which are great for recycling and Gumtree and Ebay for shifting anything that still has value. Rather than let any resale profits go into the day-to-day bank account (aka ‘the black hole’) I’ve made a point of putting the money to one side. As soon as we are allowed, I’m planning to spend that extra cash at local pubs, restaurants and retail outlets. Clearly this will be fun for me, but the local element is the really important aspect here. Spending in our own area is so much more than just helping a business owner return to profitability. Those businesses are employers of people and a higher percentage of young people too. They also use local trades and services which breathe life into our community. Finally, for your own wellbeing, it’s time to reconnect with other human beings. You don’t meet other people spending your money via your computer or phone. Feel good and do good by keeping it local.

A Brief History of Charing The archaeological history of settlement goes back to the Bronze Age, followed by the Iron Age, and there is extensive evidence of Roman activity.
Pride & Groom All Breeds of Dogs Groomed
The most famous and earliest transport route is the prehistoric track way now known as the Pilgrim's Way. Other routes followed including Roman roads, medieval roads, the turnpike from Maidstone to Ashford and, more recently, the railway, A20, M20 and HS1. Charing was given to the Church of Canterbury by Egbert II (King of Kent 765 - 780). The archbishops established a manor house here (a day's journey from Canterbury), & a market grew up outside the manor gates. The settlement was largely in place by the 13th century. The presence of the Archbishop’s Palace distinguishes Charing from surrounding settlements, and it was visited by Edward I (1297 & 1299), Henry VII (8 times between 1498 - 1508), & Henry VIII (twice in 1511, then 1513, 1520 on his way to the 'Field of Cloth of Gold' & 3 times between 1541 and 1544). The estate was given to Henry VIII in 1545, but was sold into private ownership in 1629.

By the 13th century there was a marketplace in front of the manor, & the name still survives, but now as 'Market Place'. The High Street is still lined with well-built timber houses dating to the 15th & 16th centuries, & the church was rebuilt at various periods. The tower was finished in 1545. In the 18th century, some elegant houses were built, & small ale houses gave way to large coaching inns, which only declined in importance with the coming of the railway in 1884. Since the end of WW2 major developments have taken place, with the resultant increase in population. In 1664 there were 170 households in the parish, 300 by the end of the 18th century, & 1180 by 1999. In 1377 the population was approx 300, 851 in 1811, 2284 in 2001, & will grow to an est 4000 by 2030. Let us hope that growth beyond 2030 can be achieved sensibly. A comprehensive history can be found in CDLHS' publication 'A History of Charing' (£12 +p&p), & is available from chairman@charinghistory.co.uk Keith Oram (Chair - CDLHS)

Look out of your window at your lawn and you’ll probably see that it has suddenly taken off and is growing rapidly. This means that now is the perfect time to get to grips with a bit of spring maintenance. True, your lawn will survive without it, but if you want it to look a good deal better than average, then get your skates on! In most areas temperatures should have evened up a little and the soil in beds, borders and under your lawn should hopefully not be wet and soggy. Grass needs regular mowing from now on; in some areas this may mean once a week, so make sure that the mower blades are good and sharp. On so-called utility lawns you will need to cut to about 2.5cm or 1”, while on higher grade smart lawns cut to about 1-1.5cm. Lawns benefit from a specially formulated spring feed at this time of year to encourage good strong growth and strengthen the grasses up after any winter setbacks. If you use a granular formulation, make sure that you water it in well if you cannot time the job so
6
that the rain does this for you! Give yourself a bit of a workout too and scarify the lawn. This means using a spring-tined rake to pull out any accumulated debris or thatch from the base of the grasses. This allows for a better flow of moisture and air, thus ensuring that the grass grows stronger and more healthily. If your lawn has developed a lot of moss (especially likely if it has suffered compaction, is shaded or has been particularly wet), then apply a proprietary moss killer before scarifying. Use a combined feed and moss killer to save yourself
The Garden time if you like, but whichever product you choose, make sure that you leave the specified time between applying the treatment and raking the dead moss out. If you don’t, the moss problem could become a lot worse, as you’ll spread the pieces of living moss as you rake.
LECTOR
Worm casts may be there in abundance now too, so if necessary simply use a besom or brush to brush them away or distribute them over the lawn.
It is also worth sorting out any stepping stones that have sunk too low or become uneven. Use a spade to ease them out of the lawn and lift and readjust the level beneath before replacing them. It may sound as if there’s a lot to do, but remember that every hour spent now will make a huge difference to how the lawn looks for the rest of the year!
Humps and bumps in the lawn or indeed any other sort of uneven surface can be dealt with now, but you will need to get this done promptly, just in case the weather gets hot and dry soon. A minor problem can be dealt with using a sandy top-dressing mixture, but if there are some prominent problems then use a sharp spade to cut an ‘H’ shape over the bump or hollow. Now carefully peel back the turf and then remove or add soil as necessary before replacing the turf flaps, firming well and providing a good drink.

The Lawn Whisperer Spring is in the air and it is the time when many folk start to think about their gardens. The lawn is the centre piece of many properties whether it is ornamental, social or a play area for children and pets.

M
y name is Buster and my company The Lawn Whisperer undertakes seasonal lawn care work at residential and business properties in Ashford, the local villages and across the county. I’d like to offer three basic tips regarding Spring lawn care so that you can get the best from your garden naturally: 1.
Fill the gaps: Weeds and moss will take advantage of any weak or balding areas; grab a bucket and mix up some hardy perennial rye grass seed with a top soil, rake the target area and patch the bare spots. Hope for daily rain showers and water well when it doesn’t!
2.
Edges: Tidy the edges of your lawn with a string trimmer or edging iron, take before and after photos – it makes a huge difference to the overall appearance.
3.
Mulching – Use a mulch plug or dedicated mulching mower and give your grass natural nutrients. Mulch cutting leaves tiny, almost invisible clippings to break down into the soil. The added advantage is there will be no grass to collect and dispose of after cutting.
It definitely requires patience to improve or revive your grass but it is often the case of a little TLC making a big difference. You may not have the time or inclination to undertake your own lawn care work, if that’s the case contact The Lawn Whisperer to see if I can help:
8
I am now fully booked for Spring renovations but welcoming new customers for one off or fortnightly lawn mowing, which is my speciality. Having your grass cut at the correct height with a sharp blade is a great defence against weeds, moss and pests. I offer an eco-friendly service featuring a fleet of high voltage walk behind mowers (no petrol) to suit all gardens and client preferences, whilst aiding the fight against climate change. Returning customers receive a loyalty discount on lawn mowing and price freeze promise extending through the 2022 season. If you’re seeking regular grass cutting or even if you’re just curious to sample a one-off cut with professional cordless equipment, please do get in touch. Lawn mowing is bookable online or via telephone. I look forward to hearing from you.

Practical and attractive, carpets made from natural fibres look great and have strong eco-credentials. An alternative to conventional carpets, natural fibre floorcoverings are highly sustainable with good insulating and soundproofing qualities. The rougher the surface, the more hard-wearing the flooring, giving a trade-off between durability and comfort (unless the fibres are blended with wool for softness). With an appealing texture, these floorings come in a variety of shades and interesting weaves. All natural floorings benefit from specialist, professional fitting, with a good quality underlay, and a stain-protection treatment. Regular vacuuming (just suction, no beater bar) will keep them in good shape, though some types can be susceptible to water-staining, so check with your A jute rug makes a gorgeous textural contrast against this concrete-effect kitchen floor. retailer first. Expect slight variations of colour and weave, and a slight lightening in colour over time. Sisal Hard-wearing and good looking, sisal is derived from the sustainably farmed succulent Agave Sisalana. It is anti-static, non-toxic and biodegradable, and a popular choice for its combination of durability, broad range of colours and variety of weaves. It can be used in most rooms, whether high or low traffic.

Achieve a rugged, rural look that is practical as well as attractive with a sisal carpet. Country Living at Carpetright Sisal Pentel, £39.99 per square metre, Carpetright, as above.
Seagrass Seagrass’s shiny surface makes it slightly slippery, so it’s not suitable for use on stairs. Its hard fibres repel dust and are easy to clean, making it a good choice for pets or allergy sufferers. It is durable, wear-resistant and less susceptible to water-marking than other natural carpets. Colours are natural and textures organic and variable, with weaves including
The Home basketweave and herringbone. A seagrass carpet adds character to living rooms, hallways and dining rooms. Coir Made from the processed fibres of coconut husks, coir flooring is tough and insulating. It is ideal for high-traffic areas but being coarse is less comfortable, and should not be used in kitchens, bathrooms or other rooms where it is vulnerable to water and humidity. Rustic and hearty in appearance, coir flooring is limited to a range of warm, golden tones, but is available in a few different weaves, and can be used in a hall, staircase or reception room, or made into a durable rug. Jute Jute flooring is made from the fibrous inner bark of a giant tropical herb that is closely related to hemp; in Europe it’s also called hessian. It can be woven in a variety of styles. Both anti-static and fire-resistant, jute is the softest underfoot of all the natural fibre floorings. Prone to wear, it is ideal for low-traffic bedrooms and snugs and should not be used in moist or humid spaces, where it would mark and deteriorate.
The chevron lines of this herringbone-weave carpet are perfect for a classic/contemporary look. Seagrass Herringbone, £26 per square metre, Alternative Flooring.

about “pop” stars, artists, musicians and film stars of yesteryear, allowing us to engage with our clients and bring magic to their faces as they retell their stories.
Thank You!
Zoe & Paul, owners of Seniors Helping Seniors (Ashford & Swale), would like the opportunity to say a BIG public thank you to all our wonderful helpers and carers who have worked so tirelessly over the last year to keep our amazing clients safe, happy and well during this most difficult last 12 months. We are very proud to say that Seniors Helping Seniors was awarded the S.A.F.E. Care Badge in 2020 for the extra efforts we put in to additional hygiene practices which has meant that all of our clients and carers have remained well. We would also like to thank our great clients who have endured all the restrictions put on them with humour and grace. We are pleased to say that all of our clients and team who wanted to be vaccinated have now received their first vaccine and are eagerly awaiting their second jabs in the coming weeks. We therefore say a huge thank you to the NHS teams who have carried this out so swiftly and efficiently. Making life interesting At Seniors Helping Seniors, we not only carry out routine tasks to support clients like cleaning, shopping, cooking, transport etc, but we strive to make each visit rewarding for both client and helper. Whether that’s having a good gossip over a cuppa, or an in-depth chat on current affairs, restarting a long-lost hobby or interest, or solving that pesky crossword clue. Over the last year, there have been many challenges to finding activities that can still work during a lockdown whilst abiding by Social Distancing measures. Our Carers have worked tirelessly to find ways to engage with people with Dementia for whom the change in routine and loss of contact with loved ones has been particularly difficult. We have all researched and learnt a lot
16
Thinking outside the box We have become the “Conductor” of our own classical concerts (apologies go to the kind lady in the apartment below). We have all embraced technology and learnt together to Zoom call family and friends. We have taken our daily exercise around the village green or, during poor weather, have taken part in a seated exercise routine to keep limbs supple and to work on our mobility, ready for when we can get out and about again. We have turned green-fingered and planted Spring bulbs and plants to spread a little cheer. The more adventurous have taken part in virtual Yoga classes and had a go at Lockdown Banana Bread! Our helpers have spent their own time finding travel films for clients to watch on exciting places like Australia and hunting for the second verse of a favourite long-lost poem. Our Lockdown shopping lists have become more exciting than the usual loaf of bread and pack of grapes. Old loves of cooking and baking have re-emerged and we were delighted to discover one of our super 90+ year old clients baking fruit cakes to post to loved ones to lift their spirits. We do have to say an extra big thank you to the Carer who heaved them all to the post office! Looking ahead Like the rest of the Country, here at Seniors Helping Seniors, our clients and helpers are eagerly awaiting the lifting of Lockdown and the easing of restrictions. We already have plans drawn up by carers and clients for what they want to experience first. Whether that’s a walk around the local park and a coffee on a bench, a visit to the local pub for lunch, a wander around Canterbury Cathedral, or a much-needed trip to the barbers! As we count down the days and look back over the long and tiring year we’ve all been through, we take comfort in seeing the smiling eyes of our teams over the top of their masks, knowing they have all gone that extra mile to bring joy and happiness to those whom they visit. Thank you all. If you feel that you or a loved one could benefit from our help and support, then please give us a ring, we would love to hear from you.

Make the Most of
Outdoor Living Design Full-Casette Awning
With the unreliability of our climate here in the UK, an awning increases the potential time available for you to unwind and enjoy the fresh air. Awnings can keep you cool on the hottest days, but also enable you to enjoy your deck or patio when the weather is less than perfect, so that it becomes a proper extension to your home. Awnings also help protect carpets and soft furnishings from fading, without having to draw the curtains and lose the outdoor view, and will also help to protect precious plants from drying out in really hot weather. Combining furniture, plants, lighting and accessories creates the perfect environment for dining or relaxing with loved ones. Weather Sensors A wind sensor automatically retracts your screens and awning when strong winds are detected, protecting your system from damage. A sun senor will automatically lower your awnings to block out strong sunshine and keep your living room cool. Lighting devices can also be added to your electric awnings, allowing you to enjoy longer evenings outdoors. Heating and Lighting Allows you relax in the fresh air, no matter what the weather. Side Screens The addition of side screens cuts down on wind 6 and mist coming under the sides of an awning, creating an outdoor room and a sheltered place for outdoor dining, relaxation or for children and pets to play, shielded from direct sun. Add a Splash of Colour With a variety of fabrics available and a wide range of colours for both the awning fabric and the frame itself you can be inspired to create a wonderful new outdoor space.
The casette system provides complete protection against wind, moisture and UV rays. When retracted, both the awning arms and fabric are fully covered by the casette. Semi-Casette Awning The fabric on this folding arm awning is completely covered by the casette, offering protection against weather damage when retracted.

Makes 12 Ready in 1 hr 10 mins, plus cooling INGREDIENTS • 300g rhubarb, trimmed and chopped (see Tips) • 25g icing sugar, plus extra for dusting • 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 3 large eggs • 175g self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 50g ground almonds • 1 tbsp milk
This easy all-in-one almond-flavoured sponge with a sweet and tangy rhubarb topping can be served warm with cream or custard or enjoy a slice with a cup of tea or coffee. 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. Grease a 23cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper. Toss the rhubarb and icing sugar together in a bowl and set aside. 2. Place the butter, caster sugar and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Sift over the flour and baking powder. Using a handheld electric mixer, beat for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. Fold in the ground almonds and milk. 3. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and gently level the surface with a palette knife. Scatter the rhubarb evenly over the top. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the cake is risen and springy to the touch. Leave to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar.
TIP Choose thin stems of pink forced rhubarb for this recipe and chop into small even-sized pieces. Add 1-2 tbsp drained and chopped stem ginger to the sponge mixture, if liked.

Serves 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 23 minutes, plus cooling INGREDIENTS • 125g/4½ oz asparagus • 1 handful of frozen peas (30g) • 2 spring onions, chopped • 60g/2¼ oz smoked salmon, cut into small strips • 4 eggs, beaten • Sea salt and ground black pepper
These colourful savoury muffins are easy to make and are delicious served warm for breakfast or cold for lunch with a salad. Asparagus is a fabulous healthy seasonal food to include, being rich in B vitamins and antioxidants like vitamin A, C and E. For a vegetarian option swap the salmon for some feta cheese. 1. Preheat oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6 and grease and line 8 cups of a muffin tray with paper muffin cases. Blanch the asparagus in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 2–3 minutes until just soft. Drain, then cut into 1 cm/½ in pieces using scissors. 2. Divide the asparagus, peas, spring onions and smoked salmon among the paper cases – they should be threequarters full. Beat the eggs in a jug with some salt and pepper, then pour into the paper cases. 3. Bake in the centre of the oven for 20 minutes or until the muffins are golden and just firm in the centre. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before removing them from the tray. Serve hot or cold. Gluten Free, Dairy Free Nutrition per serving (2 frittatas) 110kcal, fat 6.3g carbohydrates 1.6g, protein 11.2g
