Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the first edition for 2020. I do hope you had a good Christmas, ours was very quiet this year, which is unusual for the Allen household, but as the family grows we’ve reached the point of needing to alternate between a small gathering and the full works. 2020 will be the year of the big one, and I’ll be hosting! It’s also a big year for us all because my lovely niece Sophie will marry Dan in September, so we’re all looking forward to the Allen’s event of the year. The magazine celebrates its 15th year in print this year and, as I mentioned previously, the four monthly editions covering the villages have now changed to three bi-monthly editions. I do hope that you will all keep hold of your copy for the full two month period, after all, you never know when you might need the help of one of our very useful local businesses. As always do keep sending in your local events, and do please keep an eye on the Clubs & Societies page, especially if you’ve submitted an entry in the past, they will run in their current form unless you tell us otherwise. During the year we will be checking that details are current and any out of date items will be removed. Until next time keep well, I’ll be back in April.

over the container edges. The plants can be bought from garden centres or by mail order at this time of year.
High-Rise Edibles Whatever the size of your plot, you can get more from it with high-rise gardening, with potential in hanging baskets, wall troughs and window boxes as homes for vegetables, herbs and even fruit. So, what does it take to succeed? Larger containers allow for more room for your crops’ roots and easier maintenance, as they will run out of moisture and fertiliser less frequently, though obviously you will have to balance this with the space available. Use suitable supporting brackets and screws for hanging baskets, window boxes and wall troughs, as they must support the weight of fully grown plants laden with crops, which will be heavier after watering. Check walls, balconies and windows sills will not be overloaded, leading potentially to structural damage or injury to passing people. Consider using lighter-weight composts, such as those not including loam or the readily available peat-

free options, and lightweight containers made of bamboo, plastics or fibre glass. Plant in high-rise planters are reliant on you for food, so use good quality compost and feed crops regularly throughout the growing period. In a lofty position the plants will also be more susceptible to drying out, so regular and thorough watering is a must. If space is short and you want to grow runner beans, the dwarf runner bean ‘Hestia’ with pretty red and white flowers is perfect for containers. The seeds can be sown directly into the compost in April, or raised in small pots or trays and then planted out into the high-rise planter. Dwarf French varieties do well in a good sized window box – try ‘Duel’, or the purple-podded ‘Purple Tee Pee’. Wall baskets, troughs and hanging baskets can play host to strawberries. These plants trail naturally so will obligingly hang
Forget the idea that lettuce is just a green, leafy addition to a boring salad – there are huge selections of lettuce and other salad leaves available in a wide range of colours and leaf shapes, making them a lot more attractive than many ornamental plants! Pinks, purples, yellows and several shades of green, they’re a fastgerminating and fast-growing crop and you can either buy small plants or sow the seed directly into the compost yourself. Try ready-mixed seed selections or choose your own favourites. If you like fresh herbs with your meals then herbs in a basket, trough or window box are a must. There are creeping or trailing forms of many herbs, and thyme in particular lends itself to life in a container in a sunny spot. You can usually get thyme plants at most times of year and, as it is hardy, you can plant it out straight away. Parsley, sage, tarragon, chives and basil all look good in wall baskets or window boxes and thrive in a sunny spot. Most of the oriental vegetables, such as the pak choi varieties ‘Red Choi’ and Mizuna will do really well in a window box or wall trough in a sheltered spot. You could combine the two and enjoy the really stunning finely divided foliage of the Mizuna positioned around the edges of the container where it will
The Garden
Who can resist the taste of sun-ripened, fresh, juicy tomatoes picked sun-warmed and straight from the plant? Not me! And the great thing is there are several varieties which are particularly well-suited to growing in containers such as hanging baskets. The classic for this is ‘Tumbling Tom’, available in both red and yellow varieties, and the red-fruited ‘Tumbler’. You could raise your own from seed sown at this time of year or buy plants ready to pop into the containers in late April or May. If you like tiny fruited tomatoes, then there’s ‘Hundreds and Thousands’. Other varieties that have a bushy habit can be grown in this way but the cascading varieties are best. Pack a window box or wall trough full of chilli pepper plants such as ‘Super Chilli’ and it’ll look stunning when the plants are covered with their red, yellow or orange glossy fruits. Then you’ll be able to add some fire to your food in the months to come. Chillies are tender so buy these plants in May or June, or buy seeds and sow them now. By Pippa Greenwood
At Pippa’s website (www.pippagreenwood. com) you’ll find natural pest controls, stylish cloches, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, tools, planters, raised bed kits and the ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa’ system. Or book Pippa for a talk at your gardening club.

ello everyone, Mowgli here! Ebony and I hope you had a good Christmas and New Year. We had a great time here, although as usual it was very busy for us cats. With plenty of guests and visitors over Christmas (including Santa Paws of course- turns out that a cat can be really quite naughty and still get gifts….) we were both feeling quite exhausted by New Years Eve. Luckily for us we were able to spend the evening purring on various laps while the humans played board games and waited for the New Year. We were relieved when we heard Big Ben striking on the TV and we could sneak off to bed!
W
e have spent a lot of time the last couple of weeks watching the birds on the feeders outside the window. There are quite a lot of them at the moment in various different shapes and colours. Great fun to sit on the end of the bed and supervise what they are up to. If any of them get too bold we can issue a bit of a warning chatter, and if needed of course leap at the glass and restore order. It isn’t the birds though that are causing our main trouble. It is the pesky squirrel I have told you about beforeSaskia. She is back in the garden and now really quite plump- all that bird food we think! Not only do we have Saskia in attendance but also her friend Cyril. Between the two of them raiding the bird feeders, scaring away the birds and plotting and get around every squirrel baffle that Clive puts up around the feeders we have a lot of monitoring to do! Much as we don’t like the pesky squirrels stealing the food from the beaks of the birds we are all quite hopeful for squirrel babies later in the year. Just imagine how much mayhem they will cause bouncing all over the feeders!

ave any of you cats out there seen the film that is named after all of us felines? The humans tell us that it has bad reviews but we think a film full of cats from beginning to end can only be a good thing. We would be fascinated to see how the humans think they can move like cats- we have certainly never seen a human who can jump like us, stretch like us and maintain our effortless elegance (I can see Clive laughing as I write this. I fell off a shelf in the cat run at the weekend and was left clinging on with 2 paws shouting for help. I think Clive is amused that I still think this was elegant. All I can say is he should try and it and then he will see that I managed to maintain a good amount of grace!) Anyway, if any of you cats out there have seen the film let us know what you think!

With the unreliability of our climate here in the UK, an awning increases the potential time available for you to unwind and enjoy the fresh air. Awnings can keep you cool on the hottest days, but also enable you to enjoy your deck or patio when the weather is less than perfect, so that it becomes a proper extension to your home. Awnings also help protect carpets and soft furnishings from fading, without having to draw the curtains and lose the outdoor view, and will also help to protect precious plants from drying out in really hot weather.

New Year - New Books
From poetry to decorating, we’ve got a pretty mixed bag of books for you this month…
18
A Year of Reading Aloud – Georgina Rodgers (editor) If you love poetry, try this collection of ‘52 poems to learn and love’, where you’ll find well-known names such as Sylvia Plath, E.E Cummings, William Blake and Maya Angelou alongside newer poets. Most of the poems are short enough to learn without too much difficulty, and they’re accompanied by a paragraph about the poet and the reason why the poem has been selected. Take up the challenge of learning one each week, or just dip in and out when you need an extra dose of beauty in your life.
365 Days of Creativity – Lorna Scobie As the blurb says, “Creativity is not just about making your mark on the paper. It’s about looking at the world a little differently.” If you’re stuck in a creative rut, this book might help you get out of it. The daily artistic challenges are split into how they help you feel, so you can choose one based on whether you want to feel calm, inspired, energetic or reflective. They range from drawing patterns on a snake to capturing the view through a doorway. Whether you take five minutes or five hours on each one is up to you.
Booker Prize Shortlist 2019 – Various Looking for a new fiction book to lose yourself in on a long winter’s night? Fancy trying something a bit different to your usual genre? Treat yourself to the six novels from the Booker Prize shortlist. Stories range from Chigozie Obioma’s An Orchestra of Minorities to Elif Shalak’s 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World. Read them all to see whether you agree with the judges’ final decision.
Farrow & Ball Recipes for Decorating – Joa Studholme Planning to redecorate this year? This book might help you come up with a plan. There are thirteen case studies, from city centre apartments to a classic Georgian house, as well as tips and tricks for decorating each room of your home. There’s also plenty of advice on decorating in general, including making small rooms look bigger and using colour to make an impact. Grow Cook Eat Diary 2020 –
Sarah Raven If you love gardening and cooking this could be the diary for you. Each month has a short list of what to sow, plant and harvest in your garden, along with other garden-related tasks and a simple recipe using inseason produce. Dishes range from Cauliflower and Chickpea Curry to Beef Carpaccio with Fennel Flowers. As you’d expect, there are plenty of stunning flower photographs throughout the diary, with one image for each week. A Year of Living Thankfully – Lois Blyth Can being more grateful change your life? According to this book it can, and Lois Blyth is on a mission to show you how. Each week, you’ll work through an activity to help you embrace gratitude and take pleasure in the little things. There’s guidance on turning negative thoughts around, learning to appreciate what you have and not letting others spoil your mood.

New society members are very welcome as are visitors who pay £5 at the door. Geoff Turner, 01233 860393.

Cheats’ Apple Strudel
A classic strudel with home-made pastry can take a long time to make, but using a convenient pack of ready- rolled pastry means you can have a delicious fruity pudding on the table in less than an hour!
Ready in 55 minutes | Serves 6
Ingredients 2 large dessert apples, peeled, cored and chopped 50g raisins or sultanas 1 tbsp cornflour 50g caster sugar 2 tsp ground mixed spice 320g pack ready-rolled shortcrust or puff pastry Beaten egg, to glaze Icing sugar, to dust
TIP
Whipped cream, custard and fresh berries, to serve
26
Preheat the oven to 200C / 180C fan / gas mark 6. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Place the apples and raisins or sultanas in a bowl. Mix together the cornflour, sugar and spice and add to the apples, tossing to coat. Unroll the pastry but keep it on the paper. Using a rolling pin, gently roll the pastry a little thinner. With one long side facing you, spoon the apple mixture along the length, leaving a 2cm border at the edges. Gently roll up the pastry to enclose the filling and fold the pastry in at the ends (see Tip). Place seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush all over with beaten egg. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. Dust with icing sugar and serve sliced with whipped cream, custard and fresh berries.
Take care when rolling up the pastry and seal the edges by brushing with some of the beaten egg.

Winter Saviours When it’s wet, cold and miserable outside, you might be tempted to hibernate indoors with a cuppa. We say indulge that temptation and use the time to treat your skin and hair to a bit of T LC. rose flower oil, jasmine extracts and evening primrose oil. Together, they work to hydrate, repair and protect, and just generally leave skin feeling more ‘spring-like’. See www.alteya. co.uk.
If (like me), you’re the wash and go type who rarely has time to dry their hair, let alone style it, or you’re the opposite and have styled your hair to the max until it’s little more than a crispy mess, Bondi Boost’s Hair Growth could prove very welcome. The Australian luxury haircare range has attracted a bit of a cult following in recent years and it’s now available at Boots. I’m a recent convert. I won’t bore you with the science – it’s enough to say that the products are packed with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids to ‘feed’ your hair from scalp to tip, leaving it stronger, sleeker and definitely swishier. From £19.50 at www.boots.com.

Skin looking a bit ‘meh’? Winter is a good time to do a gentle at-home acid peel. Murad’s new Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel (£48) is a good choice as it’s enriched with extra ingredients to help you avoid irritation and dryness.
Sweep a little across your face each day to boost cell renewal by a third within a week. The end result is skin that looks fresher, brighter and healthier. 96% of testers felt their skin looked smoother after four weeks and I have to say that I agree with them. Do wear sunscreen each day that you’re doing an at-home peel and for a few days afterwards, as your skin might be a bit more sensitive. See www. murad.co.uk. When your skin is feeling dry and lacklustre, it can be tempting to slather on an extra thick moisturiser. While that’s fine for some skin types, others may prefer an easier to absorb serum. Alteya Organics’ Rose Jasminium Illuminating Perfecting Serum (£39) is lightweight and non-greasy – skin just drinks it up. It’s packed with nourishing natural ingredients, from aloe vera and jojoba oil to
If your hands are feeling dry and sore this winter, the first thing to do is switch to a gentler soap or handwash that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate. (It dries my skin to the point where my hands end up bleeding when I move them.) Next, try an intensive hand cream. Don’t worry about the fragrance or pretty packaging – go for a workhorse that’s going to get the job done. Goldfaden MD’s Hands to Heart cream is one such workhorse. It boosts hydration, fades age spots, soothes cracked skin and protects the skin from further damage. Now that’s what I call a good all-rounder. It’s £35 from www.spaceNK.com. By Kate Duggan

It’s all about changing perceptions, according to founder Ceri Wheedon who saw her friends “all living life to the full … not prepared to become invisible just because they had reached a milestone birthday.” With a target audience of men over 40, the Grey Fox Blog (greyfoxblog.com) claims it represents “an oftenforgotten but large and affluent demographic.” As a finalist in the Online Influence Awards 2019, founder David Evans is an authority on over-40s male fashion and grooming, with a special focus on the best of British-made clothing. Whether you choose to make it a one-off ride or you return to these sites as regularly as a keen surfer visits their favourite beach, you’re certain to find something of interest, whether it’s a new recipe, a handy travel tip, or even a group where you can chat to like-minded people. Happy surfing! By Kate McLelland
