TOWNSVILLE GRAMMAR SCHOOL Opening doors since 1888

WELCOME TO TOWNSVILLE GRAMMAR SCHOOL Thank you for your interest in enrolling your child at Townsville Grammar School. Where you send your children to School is one of the biggest decisions you will make on their behalf and should not be taken lightly. An electronic version of this and all documents relating to the School is available on the School website at www.tgs.qld.edu.au Townsville Grammar School is a co-educational, non-denominational school from Pre-Kindy to Year 12, with boarding available from Year 7. Our aim is to develop the vital partnership between school and family in order to help all students be happy and achieve their personal best. On enrolling your child you will find that at Grammar, there are several factors which set the School apart: high standards of discipline and equally high expectations of student behaviour; dedicated staff who take a personal interest in their students, both within and beyond the classroom providing a balance to the academic focus of the School; and a culture of achievement within the School, where students genuinely applaud the successes of their peers. Townsville Grammar School is located in Townsville in tropical North Queensland, Australia. The School is accessible via three campuses: Annandale (Pre-Prep to Year 6), North Ward (Years 7 to 12) and Townsville Grammar School recently opened its second Junior Campus located in North Shore. Initially, only Pre-Kindy to Early Primary until subsequent stages are completed. North Shore mirror the Annandale Campus and still includes all the key strengths that Townsville Grammar School is known for throughout North Queensland. Personal School Tours are available at a time that suits you and allow you to discuss the issues that you feel are important to your child’s education face to face. MUSIC@GRAMMAR Music at Townsville Grammar School is a vibrant feature of School life. The Music Programme comprises three overlapping spheres, Curriculum Music, Ensembles and Instrumental-Vocal Tuition. Curriculum, or Classroom Music is where students make and respond to music through listening, performing and composing. They learn about the elements of music, and gain understanding of the range of styles and contexts of music. In the Junior School, all children receive two half-hour Music classes each week. In Year 3, one of the music classes involves participating in the Year 3 Strings Programme. In the Middle school, all students in Year 7 attend a Music class each week. Music as an Elective extension subject is available for students in Years 8 and 9 with an allocation of three lessons per week. In the Senior School, Music is an elective subject in Years 10, 11 and 12. Townsville Grammar also offers the advanced course, Music Extension, for Year 12. Music is also offered for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma for students in Years 11 and 12 at Higher and Standard Levels. Curriculum Music in all year Levels involves Performing, Composing and Analysing. The skills learnt in classroom music are applied in the sphere of Ensemble participation. In the choral and instrumental ensembles that we offer in our Junior, Middle and Senior Schools, students learn the skills of performing with others, the discipline of rehearsal attendance, and exposure to a wide range of opportunities. Ensemble members have the opportunity to join international and national Music tours organised by the School. Ensembles include:  Grammar Singers (Senior Choir)  Grammar Mezzo (Middle School Choir)  Senior Girls’ Vocal Ensemble  Senior Boys’ Vocal Ensemble  Middle School Boys’ Choir  Symphony Orchestra  String Orchestra  Big Band  Concert Band  Celtic Strings  Clarinet Ensemble  Flute Ensemble  Cello Ensemble  Chamber Music  Classical Guitar Ensemble

The ESOS framework – providing quality education and protecting your rights The Australian Government wants overseas students in Australia to have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding place to study. Australia’s laws promote quality education and consumer protection for overseas students. These laws are known as the ESOS framework and they include the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 and the National Code 2007.

Protection for overseas students As an overseas student on a student visa, you must study with an education provider and in a course that can be found on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) at http://cricos.deewr.gov.au. CRICOS registration guarantees that the course and the education provider at which you study meet the high standards necessary for overseas students. Please check carefully that the details of your course  including its location  match the information on CRICOS.

Your rights The ESOS framework protects your rights, including: 

your right to receive, before enrolling, current and accurate information about the courses, fees, modes of study and other information from your provider and your provider’s agent. If you are under 18, to ensure your safety, you will be granted a visa only if there are arrangements in place for your accommodation, support and welfare.

your right to sign a written agreement with your provider before or as you pay fees, setting out the services to be provided, fees payable and information about refunds of course money. You should keep a copy of your written agreement.

The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is a placement and refund service for international students, which is activated in the event that your provider is unable to teach your course. Visit the TPS website for more information, at www.tps.gov.au. The ESOS framework sets out the standards Australian providers offering education and training services to overseas students must meet. These standards cover a range of information you have a right to know and services that must be offered to you, including: 

orientation and access to support services to help you study and adjust to life in Australia

who the contact officer or officers is for overseas students

if you can apply for course credit

when your enrolment can be deferred, suspended or cancelled

what your provider’s requirements are for satisfactory progress in the courses you study and what support is available if you are not progressing well

if attendance will be monitored for your course

a complaints and appeals process.

One of the standards does not allow another provider to enrol a student who wants to transfer to another course but who has not completed six months of the final course of study in Australia. If you want to transfer before you have completed six months of your final course you need your provider’s permission.

Your responsibilities As an overseas student on a student visa, you have responsibilities to: 

satisfy your student visa conditions

maintain your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the period of your stay

meet the terms of the written agreement with your education provider

inform your provider if you change your address

maintain satisfactory course progress

if attendance is recorded for your course, follow your provider’s attendance policy, and

if you are under 18, maintain your approved accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements.
