ANNANDALE CAMPUS This year’s Founders Week, acknowledging the 124th anniversary of the founding of the School was particularly special with the official opening of the Performing Arts Complex on the North Ward Campus. The construction of this multi-million dollar facility has affirmed the importance of the Arts as a pivotal component of the School’s unwavering commitment to the ethos of a broad holistic education for all.

While the demands of Year 12 have been very draining, they have learned that being extremely organised and well prepared as well as having a cohort that is supportive of each other has helped lessen the burden. “I am very thankful to my friends, cohort, my teachers and especially my family,” Kate said.

make friends with day students and to get out of their comfort zones. In boarding, it can be easy to stay at the ‘boarding’ end of the School, but having a diverse group of friends from different backgrounds helps to make our time at school much more interesting.

supporting our community f o o d dri v e TGS students contributed to the School’s annual Food Appeal in May by donating over 2,500 items of non-perishable food to the Food Relief Food Bank NQ to assist those in need in Townsville. This amazing contribution was the largest donation that the Food Bank has ever received. The Grammar Interact club co-ordinates the Food Drive and encourages Form classes to compete against each other to see which one can contribute the most food items. While the primary

This year, the winning Form class was Ms Deal’s Year 12 class, who stepped it up and donated 431 food items. The ute loads of food items were delivered to the Food Bank at the Bohle. The motto of Foodbank is ‘An Australia without hunger’. Foodbank is a non-denominational, charitable organisation which sources donated and surplus food for people in need.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day was held on the last day of Term 1 at Townsville Grammar School’s Annandale Campus. The day invites Junior School students’ grandparents and special friends back to school for the morning. Grandparents and special friends arrived in droves, many from other cities, a number from interstate and even some from overseas, to be a part of this day with their grandchildren.

(Deakin), M.App.Sc (UQ), M.Mus.St. (UQ), B.Mus., Grad.Dip.Ed. (UNE), MACEL, AIMM, MACE) comes to Grammar from Emmaus College in Rockhampton (2009-2011) where he was Acting Deputy Principal. Boys in Music At Townsville Grammar School we believe that our core purpose in music is to provide students with a foundation for life-long growth in music. In order to ensure music is accessible to all students, TGS has introduced strategies that take into account the cultural, social and developmental needs of boys. The School embraces diversity in music which allows for many varied styles of musical bands and groups. In curriculum music, students study a range of musical styles from baroque to rock. The knowledge that all music is validated at TGS has increased the attractiveness of music for boys. Although most of our music ensembles are open all students with the appropriate skills and ability, we have some ensembles designed exclusively for boys - for example Lezom, (the Senior Boys Vocal Ensemble) which is directed by Mr Steven Morris, and the Junior School Boys Choir directed by Mr Noel Nethery. In 2012, TGS introduced a Middle School Boys Choir. These choirs provide the boys with an environment to feel comfortable singing with others as well as to learn and model that it is a ‘cool’ for boys to sing. These choirs, like all the School’s choirs and vocal groups, are not auditioned, and are open to all boys.

Nicky Horstmann International Baccala u reate R E treat The International Baccalaureate (IB) Retreat was held at Mission Beach this year. The focus was on two of the ‘core’ components of the IB curriculum, namely CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK).

At the end of 2011, a familiar face at Townsville Grammar walked into her classroom for the last time. Mrs Nicky Horstmann, a much loved Science and Year Level Co-ordinator, retired after having commenced at TGS as a contract teacher in 1989. Nicky was first employed at TGS as a temporary Maths teacher after relocating to Townsville from the Brisbane West region. Nicky then taught Junior Mathematics and Multistrand Science and went on to teach Hospitality, Junior Science and Earth Science.

CAS offers an experiential learning component to the IB Programme that occurs outside the walls of the classroom and ultimately develops a spirit of initiative, innovation and self-reliance amongst IB students.

The Licuala Forest is home to much of the east coast’s cassowary population. Working with Mr Peter Trott of the Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation (C4) the group were introduced to the range and roles of Aboriginal tools and indigenous plants from the forests by one of the traditional owners Mr Leonard Andy.

Performance Space Although it would seem that teaching runs in their blood, not all the daughters originally planned to follow their mother’s career path. Lizzii was determined to break the family trend as her mum, dad, step-mum and step-dad were all teachers. However, after finishing her Honours degree in Science, Lizzii took a gap year to teach at an outdoor science Grammar donates record camp in the USA and realised that teaching was her passion. Lizzii went back to university to study breaking amount ofher postgraduate teaching qualification and two years later was at the front of a classroom.

Opening doors since 1888 on staff. “Being able to ‘steal’ resources and freely ask for advice or help when needed is definitely a bonus”, Karyn said. “There are surprisingly not too many cons.” The mother-daughter teams try not to talk about work on the weekends, however with some of the teachers teaching the same students, this can prove difficult at times. “Yes, we do sometimes talk shop, even when we have said we won’t. But Harry [Lizzii’s son] usually interrupts and we can concentrate on him instead!” Sue explains. “I think enjoyment of teaching is in our genes - there are many teachers in our family and we continue to enjoy teaching here at Grammar,” said Sue. Lizzii’s son, Harry has a few years ahead of him yet, but maybe one day he’ll follow in his family’s footsteps and take up teaching as his career too.

Thank you Mum! TGS Pre-Prep students and their mums celebrated Mothers Day a few days early this year with a special morning tea at the Annandale Campus held on the Friday prior to Mothers Day. After sitting down to the individually and creatively decorated tables with handmade table centrepieces, placemats and name tags, mums were treated to a special morning tea prepared by their children. The mums were then entertained by heart-warming performances by the young students, with two songs, Skidamarink and Happy Mothers Day to You (sung to the tune of happy birthday). As a thank you to their mums for coming to the morning tea, the children gave their mums special handmade gifts such as picture frames and handbags.

Natalie Weir (1983) continues her successful career as a choreographer and Director of the Expressions Dance Company based in Brisbane. Natalie who is married to Peter Marshall (1982) had the unique distinction in 2011 of winning two Helpmann Awards for her work with the Expressions Dance Company. Two of Natalie’s close friends at Grammar were Alison Haly (1983) and Joanne Wolters (nee Cassells 1983). Alison is a successful lawyer in Brisbane and worked on the recent Flood Commission. Joanne is a graduate doctor but now works as a medical writer for the pharmaceutical industry.

Another former student who has had a sporting oval named after him is Keith Oliver (1956). The School recently received a wonderful email from Professor Glen Figger, Professor and Dean (Learning and Teaching) of the Arts, Education and Law Faculty at Griffith University. In his email Professor Figger regards Keith as a ‘superhero’. He states that it was Keith with his great interest in his students and his ability to inspire children that set him on the path to an academic career. The field named after Keith is at a school in Bundaberg. Diana Macgregor (nee Bell 1957) has been active on the local scene organising get-togethers of past students from her era. Still enjoying life in Andorra is Peter Lucas (1991). Recently married to a woman from Barcelona, Peter is working in rugby union administration in Andorra. Peter has the distinction of representing Andorra in 22 rugby internationals. He occasionally gets back to Australia and catches up with Gordon Waddell (1989), Eddie Ansell (1989), Noel Collyer (1989), Ian Fairbairn (1989) and Cameron Johnson (1989). Julian Wicksteed (1994) continues to alternate as a teacher and an author. Julian has written three successful books on fishing. In his book A Catch on Africa he writes about fishing in Africa, in Alaska on the Fly he writes about fishing in that state. His latest book deals with his travels through Patagonia. Julian is also a noted photographer and has produced a coffee table book of photographs taken on his travels around the world.

Congratulations to Natasha Testi-Fraser (2003) on being awarded a $1000 prize from James Cook University for Excellence in English. Natasha who enrolled at Grammar from the International School in Lusaka, Zambia, is currently completing her second degree at JCU. After serving as an Officer in the Air Force with deployments to the Middle East and Afghanistan, Cavin Wilson (2005) (pictured right) has cofounded a charity for wounded soldiers called ’Soldier On’. The charity helps servicemen and women who have been wounded, physically or mentally, on contemporary operations. Pop star and television judge, Tina Arena, has come on board as the official patron of ‘Soldier On’.

Vale O u r deepest S ympathies The School and Past Grammarians Association would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the following families who have recently lost family members: The School has lost a valued member of the School community with the passing of Frank Sim (1940). On leaving Grammar Frank joined UnionFidelity as a trainee accountant. In 1942 he enlisted in the RAAF and served in Europe as a rear gunner and navigator reaching the rank of warrant officer. While based in Scotland he met and later married the love of his life, Win. They were married for 60 years living in Paxton Street throughout their marriage. After the war Frank completed his studies in accounting and continued to work for Union Fidelity. On retirement he was manager of the Townsville branch. Frank involved himself in a variety of community services including chairman of the Red Cross for 14 years and fund raising for the Masonic Lodge.

Frank joined the Board of Trustees of the School in 1968 and became Chairman in 1972, holding the position until his retirement in 1992. He was Chairman during the period regarded in the 1988 School history as the ‘Golden Years of the School’. Many buildings were constructed during this period and his contribution to the School was recognised when the F.D.Sim Building was named after him. For relaxation Frank was an avid collector of stamps, books and records. He donated his comprehensive music collection to James Cook University.
gg rr am am mm a ra irai n an Thora Whitford (nee Marshall 1941) enrolled at the School in the same year as Frank Sim. Thora had three years at the School and counted them as the happiest years of her life. Highly intelligent she was offered a medical scholarship at the University of Queensland but because of the war was not able to take up the scholarship. After the war she worked for the Liberal Party for 25 years including 11 years as secretary to the then member for Herbert, R.N.Bonnett. Married to Bill Whitford for 50 years Thora willed her body to science, specifically for Parkinson’s Disease, a disease that was with her for 16 years.
