appy New Year to you all from Team PANACHE! As with every new year, 2018 brings with it new opportunities to embrace and challenges to overcome. For this issue, I want to encourage you to embrace yourself for who you are and make choices in life that truly make you happy. In recent times we have said goodbye to media legend Ian Boyne and veteran journalist Janice Budd. It reminds us just how fragile life is and why it is so important to have good health and cherish life's moments with family and friends. Be grateful for all that you have. Looking back in addition to celebrating TRICIA WILLIAMSON Chief Executive Officer 10 years in business, our project of the year tricia@panachedigital.media went to the special 200-page commemorative magazine, we produced for the Jamaica Social Investment Fund in celebration of 20 years in Jamaica. Thank you to all of Team PANACHE and Omar Sweeney and the JSIF family for the honour of producing this beautiful magazine.

Trisha demonstrates that love for family, love of country and a passion for education is the cornerstone of any firm human commitment. She epitomizes patriotism. I have had the pleasure of meeting her and just reading this interview makes me feel like I have known her all my life. Trisha is a true Jamaican in every way. Starbucks plans to work with the MultiCare Youth Foundation to develop a Life and Work Skills training program for local youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.

tarbucks has a long history going back more than forty years of investing in the communities it serves worldwide by creating opportunities for young people, particularly those in underserved communities. The company plans to similarly partner with Caribbean Coffee Baristas Ltd. in Jamaica to support initiatives aimed at connecting young men and women in the community with the resources and support they need to succeed. Starbucks partners recently volunteered at the Garland Hall Memorial Children’s Home, painting and refurbishing the orphanage. The company is also looking at ways to support food donation and book and clothing drives. In line with its global efforts to connect youth to economic opportunities, Starbucks plans to work with the MultiCare Youth Foundation to develop a Life and Work Skills training program for local youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a focus on 16- to 29-year-olds who are not in school or employed. With funding from The Starbucks Foundation, the program is intended to support youth in both Montego Bay and Kingston and will include customer service skills training to ensure youth are ready to access employment in the retail, service, or hospitality industries. By working with the MultiCare Youth Foundation, Starbucks also plans to include volunteer opportunities for partners to serve as mentors to participating youth.

Starbucks has operated stores in the Caribbean since 2002 when it opened its first store in Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan. It now operates in six Caribbean markets, including the Bahamas, Aruba, Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago, and now Jamaica. For Starbucks, which first opened in 1971 in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market, the opening in Jamaica marks its 17th market in the Latin America and Caribbean region and 76th global market.


Starbucks BREWING OPPORTUNITIES FOR JAMAICAN YOUTH


Starbucks opened its first store in Jamaica in late November and entered its 76th market globally, marking a historic milestone for the global coffee company’s Caribbean operations and its storied history of sourcing the highest quality coffee from the region going back more than four decades. The new café, located at Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay, offers customers an inviting destination to relax, unwind and connect in one of the area’s most iconic neighbourhoods. Featuring custom artwork by local artist Fiona Godfrey, the store’s unique design pays tribute to Jamaica’s history and rich coffee heritage. Customers can enjoy a wide range of Starbucks beverages and food, including its signature handcrafted hot and cold espresso beverages made with 100 percent Arabica coffee. FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA PRO FILT’R FOUNDATION Shade 370 We can’t review this foundation without mentioning their extensive 40 shade range, a makeup industry first for a brand launch, yet alone for a celebrity brand. This foundation has a natural matte finish, doesn’t dry down cakey or settle into your lines or pores. Its thin, liquid consistency covers well. It is definitely medium-buildable coverage, but I would only build in the sections that need it. The bottle is 1.08 fluid ounces, which is .08 fluid ounces more than an average foundation bottle. • I apply the foundation over well moisturised and primed skin for best application and results. In a tropical climate I would suggest if you’re overly oily, mattify with a mattifying primer only in those oily areas. Set it with a light translucent powder if oily or in a tropical climate. • This foundation can be applied with either a buffing brush or sponge (damp), I would say try both methods to see which you prefer as I have seen people love it ether way. • I would rate the foundation 4 out of 5, it is definitely in my Top 3 foundations of all time. The only thing my HG has over it is lasting power; my HG gives a few more hours. I would wear my Fenty as a daily foundation if I wore makeup everyday. • PSA, I suggest trying to test a shade in person because all these shades have some people confused. If possible get a sample in a few shades, try them out on different days and wear them so it dries down on the skin to its truest colour; this is really the method you should use before buying any foundation, really, but even more so this one.

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA KILLAWATT FREESTYLE HIGHLIGHTER 'Trophy Wife' This is the unique gold, green, bronze highlighter that everyone heavily anticipated in the brands` initial launch. Also, the product that inspired Rihanna’s outfit for the US launch in New York. • Finally, in hand, this gem was met with mixed reviews because of the unique green shift that it had. I personally didn’t care, but I could see where everyone was coming from. This highlighter is best for medium to dark skin tones. I actually wear it 98% of the time I wear makeup, but I use it lightly over a champagne gold/nude highlighter. It is great for highlighting or bronzing your body when wearing cold shoulder blouses, beachwear and much more. • The Killawatt highlighter can do more than just highlight. It`s great for shadow all over the lid and for an inner corner highlight. The compact is so big that you’ll have product to last you forever. I must also commend the size of the mirror in the compact, great to apply makeup on the go. • This highlighter has obvious glitter particles and is not for the faint of heart. The powder itself is finely milled and applies very smooth. For a highlighter, I give it 3.5 out of 5, because I like it but it depends on how it`s used. But it gets brownie points for having the ability to use it in several days.

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA MATCH STIX SHIMMER SKINSTICK'Trippin' This cream stick is really a tube filled with wonder. I think its more a Makeup Artist’s dream than for a makeup enthusiast. I say this because even though it is quite easy to use for cream stick, there is a learning curve. • My favourite way to apply it is with the use of a small buffing brush; I swirl the brush on the tip of the stick to warm it up and to collect some product, then I lightly buff and press it on the top your cheek. The highlight given is good enough to wear on its own, especially for those that don’t like a blinding highlight, unlike me *covers face*. • Contrary to the above, my favourite way to wear this is over my bare skin, with a little concealer in spots that need it. Its the best for a natural highlight because the shade is gold with a pink shift, so the pink adds a flushed look. On the website, the shade is described as a golden-glazed apricot to be specific. • The lasting power is pretty good, even if it`s on my bare skin. It gives a solid 5 hours before starting to fade. I contribute the lasting power to the drier consistency; the drier consistency also doesn’t tend to move around the product below it, but I wouldn’t apply the stick directly to the makeup - use the brush. I give the stick 3 out of 5 stars.

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA GLOSS BOMB UNIVERSAL LIP LUMINIZER '‘Fenty Glow’ This universal shimmering rose nude as described on the website, is said to be a lip gloss fit for all skin tones. I must say I’ve seen several persons with a plethora of skin tones wear this gloss and it really does work. The gloss on me is not very rosy but you do see a hint of pink when applied. It is moisturising, shiny and lasts for a good while especially for a gloss. The moisture lasts as well even as the high-intensity shine wears down. • My favourite way to wear it is with a natural pink lip pencil underneath to amp up the pink in the gloss itself. There is somewhat of a sheen but it is not a metallic or glittery gloss. I would use this gloss on others of different skin tones with a nude base to add colour. The gloss on its own is great for a natural, no foundation look. • I rate the gloss a 5 out of 5 because it performs amazingly and does exactly what it`s promised to do. The applicator is a doe foot but bigger than what we would be used to. The packaging is compact because it`s not too long but it is a bit chubby; I don’t have a problem fitting it in my wristlet for on the go purposes. If you are a lover of gloss, you will love this gloss!

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA STUNNA LIP PAINT LONGWEAR FLUID LIP COLOUR ‘Uncensored’ In a world filled with liquid lipsticks, could Rihanna really release something life changing? • The teasing of this product drove everyone crazy!…well almost. I must admit that I did not intend to purchase this Fenty Beauty staple. I was going to wait it out and see. I wanted to see reviews on it before taking the leap, I was so calculated, all of a sudden *covers face*. So I strolled into Sephora 1 week after it launched, with a game plan that did not include this lipstick, but I could not help browse the shelves as usual. The consultant says to me “have you tried the Rihanna lipstick?”, to which I said “no.” She convinced me to try it and I was mind blown! • The consistency was so thin, weightless is the best word to describe it. But the consistency would make you think it isn’t pigmented, well you would be wrong. Its so pigmented, that on your first application you’re bound to make a mistake and use way more than you need.The packaging is so amazing and so is the applicator. I took out the applicator, wiped off the excess and went to apply, I never had to dip the applicator in for more product at all. I could draw a straight line and the lipstick application was thin but very pigmented and it wore so comfortably. • So other than obvious differences to the run of the mill liquid lipsticks that I listed above, the Stunna does transfer, it transfers on the glass you’re drinking from, the napkin you wipe your mouth with BUT it never affects the vibrancy of the perfect universal red. And that is what really matters. I don’t find it transferring if you kiss someone on their cheek, so it all depends. • This lipstick most definitely gets a 5 out of 5 stars for me. Here’s why; it`s versatility - it looks amazing on every skin tone I’ve applied it to or seen wear it. Its comfort, its pigmentation, its wear, its packaging…need I say more? |P

The

HUGH WYNTER FERTILITY Management Unit

The Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit (HWFMU) is in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies. It is governed by the Vice Chancellery and is led by the director Dr. Vernon DaCosta. The Unit was established in 1979 as the Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management solely to provide modern family planning services to enhance women’s reproductive health and assisted reproductive services before being renamed on July 12, 2008, after its first director Professor the Honourable Hugh Wynter. The Unit has four interrelated areas namely Clinical Services, Training, Research and Outreach which contribute to its overall goal of improving the quality of life of our population through continued improvement and enhancement of sexual and reproductive health care within the region. Major Highlights 2000-2017 New initiatives added to the Unit’s existing portfolio in the new millennium were an array of assisted reproductive techniques to the clinical services and in training, the Masters in Counselling by Distance Education. Between 2010 and 2014, the Unit underwent major physical and technological expansion of the facility. The expansion included two level 1 and 2 state of the art world class endoscopic operating rooms, a state of the art assisted conception laboratory and an interactive lecture room with telemedicine with regional and international simultaneous reach and which allows the viewing of live surgeries in the operating theatres. This expansion and introduction of new technology have provided greater access by clients to the services and improved facilitation of the training of medical students and practitioners, nursing students and pupil midwives in contraceptive technology, minimally invasive surgical techniques and assisted reproduction technologies. The use of minimally invasive surgical techniques has significant benefits for client safety and recovery as well as enhancing professional efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.

A major outcome of the technological expansion has been the collaboration forged with the International Society for Gynaecologic Endoscopy (ISGE) and the formation of Caribbean Association of Gynaecologic Endoscopic Surgeons (CAGES) which together hosted the 2017 Minimally Invasive Gynaecological surgery (MIGS) conference and postgraduate courses in Jamaica, the first of its kind to be held in the region. This signal event facilitated advanced training and international certification of Caribbean consultant obstetrician/gynaecologists and has placed the HWFMU on the path to achieve international certification as a centre of excellence for gynaecologic endoscopy. Additionally, 7 clients with gynaecological complications benefited from surgical interventions at no cost performed by the HWFMU consultants in partnership with the international experts.The live surgeries were beamed to the lecture theatre with telemedicine facilities which allowed medical practitioners to watch and interact with the surgeons. The HWFMU has also extended its reach in utilizing the facilities for training by hosting in collaboration with Ferring Pharmaceutical the conduct of two in vitro fertilization ( IVF) training workshops (2015 and 2016) for consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. A total of 25 consultants were trained from 5 countries. The addition of assisted reproductive services recognizes the right to and need for the service. The World Health Organization (2012) indicates that one in every four couples in developing countries had been found

to be affected by infertility. The service marked its success with the birth of the first test-tube baby in 2001 and to date over three hundred (300) babies have been delivered. The HWFMU’s assisted conception programme has

provided many couples, who could not afford treatment overseas, the opportunity to conceive and raise their own children. The service has been expanded to include egg-sharing and donor-recipient programme for couples

whose gametes were not functional and to make the programme even more affordable for financially challenged clients. Oocyte preservation (egg freezing) is an IVF service which caters to females delaying motherhood for professional development and also, for those needing to undergo cancer treatment. Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) testing is also offered. It allows females to know their fertility status by accessing information on their ovarian egg reserve. The Unit continues to expand and improve its assisted conception services to meet its clients needs both locally and internationally. Training In addition to clinical training, the Unit delivers a four-year postgraduate programme, the Masters in Counselling by Distance Education which utilizes face-to-face teaching and online learning across Caribbean territories served by the UWI. There is the demand for trained counsellors to manage the complex behavioural problems detected in the primary and secondary schools. This programme has produced a cadre of competent counsellors across the Caribbean that have mastered the concepts, principles and techniques in Career, Family Therapy, Person-Centred, Existential, Psycho-dynamic and Cognitive-Behavioural, Schools of Counselling, and Eclectic Integrative Counselling. Outreach The Outreach Section in collaboration with stakeholders and the clinical, training and research teams carries the work, products and services of the Unit beyond its walls and extending its social responsibility to its neighbouring communities. Outreach provides support in the promotion, monitoring and evaluation of the strategic plan, client advocacy and initiation, and the formation and nurturing of local, regional and international linkages for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) training and research. t’s been a year and three weeks since Donald Trump was elected. It’s also been a year and three weeks since my first company, Nasty Gal, filed for Chapter 11 protection. That’s a nicer way of saying “bankruptcy.” But what a year and three weeks it’s been.

Today marks the announcement of the close of Girlboss’ $3.1 million round of seed funding, led by one of the best investors in the valley and (thank the lord) a woman – Nicole Quinn of top-tier Silicon Valley venture firm Lightspeed Venture Partners. Joining her, alongside our existing investors Slow, BAM, Human Ventures, and others are Gary Vaynerchuk and Troy Carter, two entrepreneurs I admire and respect so much. I couldn’t be more thrilled and honoured to have their support in what we’re building, and am equally thrilled and honoured to have been given this second chance by our community of incredible women, many of whom have followed my own ups and downs, choosing to continue rallying together for Girlboss. And me, surprisingly, despite it all. But, holy shit starting a business hard. That’s not to say this year hasn’t been awesome. It was my first year in as long as I can remember with zero public relations crises (save for the mediocre reviews of the Girlboss Netflix series). There were two incredible

However, after years of layoffs, lawsuits and financial woes, I’ve never been told “no” more in my life than I have by investors this year. I heard everything from “media is dead” and “your pitch sucked,” to “How is this going to be a billion-dollar company?” and “How will you 100x my investment?” Some asked about what happened at Nasty Gal. It’s too long and depressing a story for any coffee meeting, investor pitch, and certainly this article (there will be another book!), but a lot happened.

pitch, my thinking, my presence and level of confidence in the room, and it made a profound difference.

We raised $40 million in 2012 at a $330 million valuation, which put an unreasonable price on our head, scaring away future investors. I was a young and naive founder. Hype-machine Fab.com collapsed. The unspoken mandate was to become the Amazon of fashion or a niche brand, and we chose neither – getting lost somewhere in the purgatory of being an overpriced e-commerce business that failed to evolve and had hired far too many people.

However, a serial entrepreneur told me once that you “make the same mistakes over and over again,” even though you’ve learned from them. I’m hoping to sidestep as many of those as possible, and start Girlboss with 100x more intention than I did Nasty Gal. Maybe, just maybe, that’s how you become a billion-dollar company.

A hundred people in the year after our Series A, to be precise. And to top it off, in late 2016, “Hail Mary” after “Hail Mary” vanished from our view, leaving us with an impossible choice. I’m thrilled to have been rejected so many times this year. My pitch did suck! When I raised money for Nasty Gal, my investors wanted in so bad, they wrote the pitch deck for me. Sure, it was cute and unheard of that I was a community-college dropout that built something with no credit cards, no investors, and zero debt and turned it into $30 million in revenue profitably – but without the diligent thinking that I’ve learned since, I now see that it was a recipe for disaster. This year, the “nos” made the “yeses” all the sweeter. I could feel the improvements I’d made based on that difficult feedback in my strategy, my

I found my conviction, and I found the right investor in Nicole Quinn and Lightspeed. By the beginning of November, our round was oversubscribed, a word investors use for people fighting to get into your company. Boy, is learning a blast. The future for Girlboss looks bright, but I still have much to prove. There’s something to be said for having a chip on your shoulder; for not getting it right the first time and having the breadth of experience to finally exploit your hard-earned wisdom. I no longer inherit the mistakes I made over the years at Nasty Gal, too ingrained to unwind once they were set into motion.

Whether you’re side hustling, front hustling, or finding your entrepreneurial hustle inside a larger company, we’ve got you. But we won’t stop there. Women having money and finding ourselves increasingly in positions of power is just the beginning. iss Jamaica Davina Bennett might not have won the first place crown at this year's Miss Universe pageant, but she definitely made a lasting impression. The 21-year-old philanthropist chose to take the pageant stage with her natural hair, an afro, instead of the common blowouts and extensions we see time after time on pageant stages. Afros and the natural hairstyles of people of colour are still frequently considered unprofessional or deemed inappropriate so Bennett's act of wearing her true hair is a statement against the norm. Bennett chose to use her platform and provide representation to the countless faces at home watching who share her natural hair texture, but rarely get to see the attribute reflected in beauty pageants.”- Chloe Hall, Elle.com A few months now have passed since the Miss Universe Competition where Davina was awarded 2nd Runner-Up and proudly represented Jamaica. Amidst her crazy schedule of appearances and photo shoots and interviews were honoured to get a moment and reflect on all that has transpired and the what the future holds. A lover of her parish Clarendon, she calls it her “favourite chill spot”. A foodie at heart, like a true island girl she loves her seafood. Davina by any measure is a stunning beauty with a regal air about her when she walks into a space. She is the perfect model in front of a camera lens and needs little or no directionshe loves the camera and it certainly loves her back. Our Miss Jamaica has a mantra that believes “a positive mind with positive thoughts will bring positive results.” An inspiration to many herself to so many, she recounts, “Yes I am surprised that I have inspired so many people because of what I did on the international stage.” She shares that her greatest inspiration has come from her grandfather.

What would you say was a turning point in your hair journey- was it ever a love/ hate relationship? Davina Bennett (DB): I’ve always had a love/ hate relationship with my hair because it's sometimes hard to maintain and handle on my own, but I love it because it inspires others to just be themselves and embrace their natural looks and it plays a significant role in the representation of one’s self-value. PANACHE: The wearing of your natural hair at the Miss Universe pageant was a redefinition of international beauty standards. What made you decide to wear your hair naturally and free (no ponytails, no flat iron needed)? DB: I decided to keep the natural hair to break the stigma and perception of how beauty queens should look. PANACHE: What products do you use in your hair to keep it so lustrous and beautiful? DB: My favourite products to use are from ORS Olive Oil, from their moisturizers to their shampoo and conditioner. I am also a fan of natural products like castor oil and coconut oil.

PANACHE: What advice would you give to someone who wants to go natural? DB: I would advise them to give it a try and embrace their natural beauty. PANACHE: We love your beautiful skin, what is your beauty regime? DB: For my skin, there is not one specific regime but I tend to use a lot of natural body oil products mainly from Kihara's line and drink plenty of water. PANACHE: Jamaica supported you before, during and after the Miss Universe pageant, what did the outpouring of love mean to you? DB: The love I've received thus far is indescribable; I am humbled and grateful to have been received so well by the public. with you and your Afro-American, you've ignited a fire in natural hair movement. What was your reaction to all that press and attention...even #AfroFriday here in Jamaica? DB: All the love from the press is still overwhelming and I am filled with such gratification from all the exposure‌I’m still pinching myself! PANACHE: You looked stunning in yellow and red, do you have a favourite colour? DB: Thank you, my favourite colour is gold. PANACHE: When someone says to you "How can you be the physical representation of your country?" What's your response? DB: Our motto is out of many one people and that is significant as we are a melting pot of different ethnic backgrounds, cultures and religion and I am a testimony of this. My family line is a mixture of Indians, Africans

and even Afro-Latina and the greatest thing is that they all coexist in one love just as the people in Jamaica. PANACHE: How did your friend Jermaine Dyer motivate you to enter the competition? DB: Jermaine Dyer motivated me by being positive, by helping me and guiding me along the way and the constant talks about how great I am and how much greater I will become. PANACHE: What was the reaction of your Mom and Dad when you told them you were going for the crown? DB: I wasn't with my parents physically to see their reactions but it was always my dad's dream so he was over the moon, my mom, on the other hand, was a bit hesitant because she knew I was afraid of speaking in front of a large audience and she was wondering if I was really ready.

PANACHE: People see the glitz and glamour, but tell us about the work that you and the team put in behind the scenes from speech sessions with Paula Ann and more... The hard work and guts begin the glitz... DB: It was a team effort that involved so many individuals. I had plenty of speech sessions with both Paula-Anne PorterJones and Fabian Thomas, Hard-core gym time with Debbie Hall from Spartan Health Club, Dance & Movement with Marlon Simms of NDTC, Stage Presentation & Runway sessions with Yendi Phillipps, Etiquette sessions with Angelie MartinSpencer, Current & World Affairs Training with National Directors Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams and even makeup classes with Oneil Baugh and Dawn Lindo from D'Marie Institute. Styling was also vital and so we had a few fittings that created the perfect wardrobe. Karl and Mark also did an excellent job in getting local designers and boutiques to contribute to the wardrobe as well as putting the pieces together.

DB: I have faced many challenges, medical problems, a struggling career, robbery et al... I overcame all the adversaries because I had a good support system from both family and friends.

PANACHE: On August 27, you posted " I did it" with a portrait of tears of joy... What was that moment like for you...being crowned Miss Universe Jamaica 2017 now that you reflect on it. DB: It was a wonderful feeling to have won the Miss Universe Jamaica title because I felt like I was always losing and needed that victory to prove to myself that I could do anything once I worked hard and I did just that. PANACHE: You once said you knew what it meant to "fail and work twice as hard". What major challenge(s) have you faced in life and how did you rise above it?

PANACHE: As our queen, you represent Jamaica by being yourself, authentic and bold- how would you like to inspire other young girls? DB: I would like to inspire other young women to keep fighting for what they believe, never give up on themselves and to know that they are beautiful just the way they are.

PANACHE: Social media has its pros and cons... It has been a great platform for fans to show their support and for you to raise awareness of worthy causes. So as an Ambassador to End Bullying, what advice would you give for youths on social media today? DB: I would tell the youth to love themselves, to understand that all names are temporary and they are all uniquely made.

PANACHE: Tell us more about your foundation, it's work and the goals you have for 2018? DB: The Davina Bennett Foundation for the Deaf is to spread awareness for the Deaf community and eradicate the barriers of communication. The goals for 2018 would be to continue on that path with new projects and partnerships along the way. PANACHE: You are very passionate about the work of your Davina Bennett Foundation for the Deaf. Your emotional reaction to your friend and mentee hearing clearly for the first time with an hearing aid was powerful. Please share more about that project of distributing hearing aids to 500 people across Jamaica. DB: The hearing aids were not distributed by me but by the Starkey Foundation, I was a Patron and witnessed the work they were doing, and I got so emotional when Britney was given the hearing-aid and heard me for the first time. PANACHE: What changes would you like to see in Jamaica to better support those who are hearing impaired? DB: I would like for the Deaf community to be granted equal opportunities as those in society from their educational facilities and system to their social everyday duties. I’d like to see more of them being employed. PANACHE: As an Ambassador for Ending Bullying, what positive impact do you see yourself having in that capacity? DB: As an End- bullying Ambassador I can certainly relate to being bullied because I too was a victim and this platform has allowed me to not only share my experiences but how I

PANACHE: Is there any style or dress that you love the most from your collection? DB: I would have to say my favourite dress would be my yellow final gown worn on the final night of the Miss Universe competition. The first time I saw it and fitted it, it brought tears to my eyes…tears of joy!

I overcame all the adversaries because I had a good support system from both family and friends. -Davina Bennett overcame bullying. My message is to love who you are and embrace yourself. PANACHE: You are a social influencer, who/ what are some of your favourite accounts to follow? DB: I love to follow other influencers like Oprah and Rihanna.

PANACHE: Name one fashion trend you hope never comes back? DB: I am a lover of fashion and appreciate all kinds however I think it’s safe to say (and I know many females will agree) that I hate to see men wearing sagging pants…it’s not sexy at all! PANACHE: Your current role aside, what would be your dream role? DB: My dream role was always to be an international model. PANACHE: How do you deal with negative people? DB: I don't focus on negative people so I don't normally allow their energy to consume me. PANACHE: Where do you see yourself in three years? DB: I see myself as a philanthropist and successful entrepreneur. PANACHE: What would you say to the next young Jamaican girl looking to enter the Miss Universe competition next year? n 2001, Shaggy was introduced to the Bustamante Hospital for Children whilst visiting a friend’s son who had been admitted there. He was so moved by what he witnessed, that he vowed to do whatever he could to make things better there for our nation’s children. Jump ahead to 2018 and Rock music legend Sting and Haitian American musician Wyclef Jean were among the international stars that performed at the 2018 Shaggy and Friends Concert, held January 6 on the lawns of Jamaica House in St Andrew. This benefit concert was hands down one of the best shows in Jamaica and the Caribbean. From the decor to the food and drinks to the overall experience Shaggy & Friends is a must see event that is in aid of a worthy cause.

Our goal with our support is to help the foundation raise awareness and get donations in so we can meet or even better surpass the goal of raising $100Million for the Bustamante Hospital for Children. Also hitting the stage for free were a number of local and Caribbean stars in an effort to help the struggling government-run hospital acquire vital equipment to save the lives of children in the ICU. to increase beds in the ICU of the hospital, which is the only full-service children’s hospital in the Englishspeaking Caribbean. At the launch on Wednesday, at the Bustamante Hospital for Children, Shaggy appealed for support of the venture, stating that each ticket will save one life. He said the venture started as a means of him giving back each year, until he realised that it was more than he could give personally, after which he was advised to start the SMADF. In outlining the needs of the hospital, Dr James, Head of The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the hospital, gave an example of the little boy who came in with his organs failing and would have died, if it wasn’t for the equipment that the SMADF donated over the years. He said the boy can now be a worthwhile member of society and can now in the future “pay his taxes”, which brought laughter to the large gathering at the launch. James said, “we admit 150 patients annually to this five-bedded facility, but are beset by the consequences of resource limitations; inadequate physical space, inconsistent supplies of critical items, difficulty with acquisition of cutting-edge equipment as well as maintenance of the equipment we have.

Story-Telling Secrets For Marketers

W

hen the phone rang on October 18, 1998, two guys were in their basement wondering how to tell the homeowner that his Eisenhower-era furnace was beyond repair. As he contemplated their predicament and watched his kindergartner, Grace, play with a friend, Chris Bohjalian answered the call that changed his life. It was none other than Oprah Winfrey, who announced she had just selected “Midwives,” his already-bestselling novel, for her book club. A year later, “Midwives” was still on the bestseller list, and 19 years after that, Chris is the author of 16 novels, many of which have won awards and attracted huge audiences. Because Chris started his career in advertising (we worked together at J. Walter Thompson in the mid-‘80s) and we marketers are increasingly obsessed with the idea of brand storytelling, I thought he would be an interesting and instructive guest for “Renegade Thinkers Unite.” Happily, he was all that and more, offering valuable insights into any brand that’s looking to consistently create content that people actually want to consume. Since we talked for 55 minutes over a two-part episode, here are a few of the key takeaways.

Writing starts with a disciplined approach The fact that Chris became a successful novelist was no surprise to those of us who knew his work ethic. “I was writing between 5 and 7 a.m. in the morning before going to work at Thompson and then Monday and Tuesday nights when I came home from work,” Chris recalled. And though his hours changed as he got older, “the goal is to write a thousand words a day [since] it is a whole lot easier to edit garbage than a blank page.” Bohjalian then edits his work with a messy fountain pen and ultimately his books go through seven to nine drafts. How many drafts is your content going through? Be true to your brand and your audience During our time together at JWT, there was another budding author on an adjacent floor by the name of James Patterson. At the time Patterson was Executive Creative Director and an intimidating character to us account people, but he nonetheless wrote a blurb for the back of Chris’ first book. When asked about Patterson’s writing, Bohjalian complimented “his deep respect for his readers and his understanding that he needs to be giving them something back.” Chris also pointed out that “James Patterson is also a brand and readers have very specific expectations of what they're going to get when they open one of his books.” Do consumers know what content they can expect from your brand? Have the courage to stay in your lane Learning from one’s mistakes is hardly a new concept, but Chris raises the bar with his clinical self-examination. “When my books have failed artistically, it's usually because I lost courage,” he shared. He went on to explain, “I'm really proud of the opening third of ‘The Night Strangers’ but then I lost courage and instead of focusing on one individual's PTSD and the ramifications for his family, I took one of those hard left turns into the sensational and that’s not my specialty.” Do you know your sweet spot and how to tell if you’re veering out your brand’s subject or style lane? Napolean Hill's book was first published in 1937 and draws lessons from rich men of that era, including Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, among others.

"It lays the foundation, and shows the impact of how living within your means and spending less than you earn can give you the financial freedom at an early age," Dorsainvil said.

The book teaches you the "mindset one needs to become wealthy," according to financial advisor Ivory Johnson, founder of Delancey Wealth Management in Washington, D.C.

Reading the book should give you an understanding of how all decisions – from buying a home to a car – impacts your long-term wealth, according to Dorsainvil.

"Our mind is incredibly powerful and thoughts turn into reality," Johnson said.|P

prah Winfrey gave a rousing and inspiring Golden Globes speech to honour those who have come forward with their stories in the wake of the sexual harassment scandal that has rocked Hollywood. As she became the first black woman to win the Cecil B DeMille award during Sunday's ceremony, Winfrey used her public platform to shine a light on all the injustice and inequality experienced by women in every industry all over the world.

"In 1964, I was a little girl sitting on the linoleum floor of my mother's house in Milwaukee watching Anne Bancroft present the Oscar for Best Actor at the 36th Academy Awards. "She opened the envelope, and said five words that literally made history: "The winner is Sidney Poitier." Up to the stage came the most elegant man I had ever seen. I remember his tie was white and, of course, his skin was black. And I'd never seen a black man being celebrated like that. "And I have tried many, many, many times to explain what a moment like that means to a little girl, a kid watching from the cheap seats as my mom came through the door, bone tired from cleaning other people's houses. But all I can do is quote and say that the explanation in Sidney's performance in Lilies of the Field: 'Amen, Amen. Amen, Amen.' "In 1982, Sidney received the Cecil B DeMille Award right here at the Golden Globes, and it is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award. "It is an honour - it is an honour and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them and also with the incredible men and women who inspire me, who challenge me, who sustain me, and made my journey to this stage possible. "Dennis Swanson, who took a chance on me for AM Chicago. Quincy Jones, who saw me on that show and said to Steven Spielberg, 'Yes, she is Sofia in The Color Purple.' Gayle, who has been the definition of what a friend is. And Stedman, who has been my rock. Just a few to name. "I'd like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because we all know

that the press is under siege these days, but we also know that it is the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice - to tyrants and victims and secrets and lies. "I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times, which brings me to this: What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I'm especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. "Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell. And this year we became the story. But it's not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It's one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue." "They're the women whose names we'll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories, and they work in restaurants, and they're in academia and engineering and medicine and science. They're part of the world of tech and politics and business. They are athletes in the Olympics, and they are soldiers in the military. "And there's someone else: Recy Taylor, a name I know and I think you should know too. In 1944, Recy Taylor was a young wife and a mother. She was just walking home from the church service she'd attended in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted by six armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road coming home from church. They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP, where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case.

"And together they sought justice. But justice wasn't an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted. "Recy Taylor died 10 days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday. She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up. "Their time is up. Their time is up. And I just hope - I just hope that Recy Taylor died knowing that her truth, like the truth of so many other women who were tormented in those years and even now tormented, goes marching on. "It was somewhere in Rosa Parks' heart almost 11 years later when she made the decision to stay seated on that bus in Montgomery. And it's here with every woman who chooses to say 'Me too' and every man, every man who chooses to listen. "In my career what I've always tried my best to do, whether on television or through film, is to say something about how men and women really behave, to say how we experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere, and how we overcome. "I've interviewed and portrayed people who have withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you, but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even during our darkest nights. So I want all the girls watching here now to know that a new day is on the horizon. "And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'me too' again.
