and following my vision of living in Jamaica & serving others through coaching, was much stronger.
This is a quote that resonates with me very deeply and one that I firmly believe in. I was born and raised in England, however growing up; I had a burning desire to live in Jamaica. I envisioned owning my dream home there: a beautiful home with a sea view. I held this dream for many years, believing that it would come true. In 2011, I moved to Jamaica, and in 2014 I achieved the dream…the vision… I had created for myself. I built my dream home with my partner. I left behind family and friends and my job which I had been in for approximately 22 years and my coaching business which I had started to build. Even with the thought of starting over, staying true to myself

The journey thus far has not been without its challenges but I have always kept my Why in sight and held onto my Vision knowing that there are always lessons to be learnt from all challenges. I am a firm believer in staying true to oneself and not following the norm, the average. We are all unique individuals and as such we have our own unique message for the world, I believe that it would be unjust not to share it. With so much information out there it is very easy to lose oneself and get caught up in the hype, the latest fads etc .... more so when no one quite understands your Vision and doubts the feasibility of it. Fear creeps in, you begin to doubt yourself, you feel it will never materialise, you end up following someone else’s dream.... vision....
Know what you want to do, Hold the thought firmly, And do every day what must be done, And every sunset will see you that much nearer to your goal.
It is my belief that if one keeps his dream or vision at the forefront of his mind, while steadfastly working towards achieving it, then he has to reach his destiny. That’s the teaching behind Destiny Achieved Coaching; I help business owners put their vision at the forefront of their lives and use the constant image of their vision as impetus for making their goals and vision a reality. First and foremost, I help my clients understand why it is necessary to get into alignment with their vision. Lisandra Rickards
eet one of Jamaica’s youngest powerhouse women, Lisandra Rickards, CEO of the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship Caribbean. The organisation is the region’s leading business accelerator for scalable, highpotential entrepreneurs.
Lisandra stands tall among a growing set of women in the Caribbean shifting and reshaping the protocol for leadership in the region.

She’s a 34-year-old dynamo. Here are just some of the reasons why. Lisandra is a Harvard graduate, but she’s certainly not the rigid personality some people would assign to an ivy leaguer. She has a vibrant personality, big hair and an even bigger heart. She’s always ready to serve and has a strong desire to inspire young people to go after their dreams. She also has a deep-seated quest to help the Caribbean economy grow. She became CEO at only 32 years old. After only three years, Lisandra worked her way up the ranks from Entrepreneur Development Trainer, to Entrepreneur Programme Manager, then to Entrepreneur Programme Director and finally where she is today - CEO. Once Lisandra landed the CEO job, she embarked on a period of earnest self-reflection and introspection. After months of re-

examining the organisation’s core values, and her own, she dug her heels in and pivoted the Branson Centre’s direction. She also firmed up her vision about the kind of leader she would be. Within less than a year as CEO, Lisandra made some dramatic changes to the organisation: 1.
She moved Branson Centre’s headquarters from Montego Bay to Kingston.
2.
She spearheaded a team overhaul, and quickly recruited a group of strong Kingstonbased stalwarts to join the organisation.
3.
She shifted the organisation’s focus from startups to scale-ups and revamped the accelerator programme to facilitate greater emphasis on providing access to funding.
4.
She led the charge in bringing on a strong pool of local corporate donors.
5.
She doubled down on the groundwork of establishing
These accomplishments are outstanding and in many ways unprecedented, considering the short time in which she was able to accomplish them and the backdrop of social, economic and political constraints that often slow down or derail the efforts of many Caribbean leaders. However, it’s Lisandra’s firm grasp on core values that gives her the fortitude to succeed. These values include: »» A dedication to an unwavering growth mindset. »» A desire to remain a humble, kind leader. »» A strong belief in authenticity. »» A purpose-driven vision of work-life balance that holds well-being, altruism and high productivity with equal importance. While many of these values are traditionally assumed to be softer, more feminine and less fruitful, Lisandra continues to reap tremendous success through them, while creating ripples of change that carry out through the society at large. She is a great example of the indomitable, nurturing spirit of the female leader. Her journey as a trailblazer has surely only just begun.

The Ladies of Branson Share advice for women seeking to tap into their personal power…

omen leaders are on the rise in the Caribbean, and the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship - Caribbean is a prime example of the bolstering power of a group of strong, determined, focused, smart, savvy women. The Branson Centre is the region’s most recognised and successful nonprofit business accelerator. It was launched in 2011 by business mogul Sir Richard Branson and his philanthropic organisation, Virgin Unite. A woman has always been at the helm of the Centre, and its team has always consisted of high achieving women who are top performers in their fields.
wellbeing and personal fulfillment equally important to high productivity and a growth mindset. Each team member also has a deep desire to contribute to building the region’s social and economic fibre, and help others. The powerful women at the Branson Centre are role models, guiding both their peers and younger women alike to push beyond their limits, aim for the sky and do it all with integrity, humility and a vigorous quest to be of service. Here each member shares insights on some of the qualities that have led them to success, as well as thoughtful advice for other women on a mission to rise above challenges and achieve their vision of success.
“It gets better. When you’re young you tend to believe that this is it, and go ‘Oh my gosh’ if everything isn't working out, or isn’t working out the way you planned. But, what will be will be - whatever it is will work out as long as you position yourself and work hard. If you make steps towards that thing, ultimately it does come to you. I truly believe that. Just stay focused and keep working hard.” - Clare
"You are stronger than you know. I go by three pillars to guide my day to day activities - the 3D's. Destination: Have an idea as to where you would like to be or dream of. Determination: Despite the odds of life, stay positive both mentally and physically. Dedication: Be committed to goals, whether they are short or long term, and have a stick-to-itiveness. Once you keep these 3D’s in mind, remember that God does not give you more than you can handle. Always see the bright light at the end of the tunnel, because the best is yet to come." - Coronia

"I have daughters, so I have a very strong conviction when it comes to young women embracing their personal power. I think young women should not allow the assumptions of society to box them in. They should embrace their abilities to be able to grow and expand their capacity. I encourage young women to know that they can do and be anything that they want to. KADEON RICHARDS-BAILEY
GIZELLE RILEY
Mentorship Manager
Development & Communications Coordinator
As the Mentorship Manager and a coach, Kadeon has learned the power of honing her objectivity skills. This allows her to help people change their mindsets, think outside the box of their usual perspective and even possibly pivot their thought processes entirely. “I’ve learned how to listen to people objectively. I share my views without necessarily agreeing or disagreeing, but just saying - ‘I take your point, that's valid, but here's another viewpoint.’” Kadeon says that communicating in this way helps others’ unfold profoundly.
Gizelle brings to the team vital, eclectic get-it-done energy. As a digital marketing and communications specialist, her passion comes from being able to use her skills to be of service to great entrepreneurs with boundless potential. She’s someone that pushes past barriers, whether by securing media coverage for entrepreneurs, getting top honours at school, or eliminating limiting beliefs in herself and others. That innate drive puts her in a constant state of evolution.
"Fear is normal. It’s ok to be shy, to have doubts or to not know. The only thing I would not encourage you do is to let that fear stop you. Take that leap of faith. Believe that you are able to, even when you have a million thoughts that say ‘no no no’. Listen instead to the ounce that says ‘I can’ and ‘What if I could?’. Give yourself that one little push, despite the fear." - Kadeon
You are enough. Never forget that. No matter what anyone tells you, no matter the doubts you may sometimes have, know that you are valuable and fully equipped to surmount any challenge. You can achieve whatever you put your mind to. You are in this race of life to share your God-given gifts, but you have to believe with absolute certainty in the power you already have inside of you. You are enough to take that leap of faith; enough to start that business; enough to share your truth with the world. You’ve got this. - Gizelle

Sony 1000XM2 REVIEW BY DJ COURTNEY
During the unboxing of the headphones I normally don’t read the features, so when I connected to the Bluetooth, I was prompted that an app was available & that it could also be upgraded. So I followed the instructions, let me tell you, this is one of the most featurepacked headphones I’ve ever used, but that wasn’t all, when I looked at the controls on the headphones I decided to take a quick glance, well guess what, I found a feature that is simply amazing. Say you’re listening to music & you see someone who wants to talk to you, you can simply hold your hand over the right ear cup, where the controls are located, the music goes almost into a soft mode & you are able to hear the person speaking without removing the Headphones. Boooooommm! So let’s get to the real deal, after charging it for couple

hours, I connected my iPhone via Bluetooth, which was as easy as can be. Since then, I've been using it for about a week,
and trust me when I say it’s been a very happy experience. The sound from these Sony 1000XM2 Headphones is awesome, crystal clear & you get very good bass in your listening experience. However, I’m still iffy as it relates to call quality when you’re answering your phone. A strong selling point for this Sony Headphone is its noisecancelling feature, and let me tell you, they do an excellent job with it. To be frank, that’s the best feature about these Headphones. To top it off it’s also very comfortable & adjustable, which is perfect in certain situations.
Even though it is being marketed as a Bluetooth headphone, it does include a cord attachment for wired connection. So being a professional DJ, I decided to test it out at a gig and the result was wonderful. Problem is, the noise cancelling feature was too damn good, I couldn’t even hear the crowd response, but because of its adjustability, I was able to use it on one ear, which was perfect. As it related to the battery life, I charged the Headphones once and I’ve used it for up to 5 days for about 5 hours per day & it was still going. Product info stated that while using Bluetooth it can work for 30 hours, which is ideal in any situation. It also includes a quick charge feature. The Headphone comes with a very neat case, which includes a Micro USB & a Wire connector. Overall I’m extremely pleased with these Headphones, the truth is they are now my go-to Headphones and will be with me all the time. Finally, I’ve seen where they have compared these to the Bose (which I haven’t tested yet) and I’ve read that they are rated basically the same. Well let me tell you this, I’m good over here, I’m with Sony.

et me start by saying this, I love these damn Sony 1000XM2 Headphones, I’m not even sure what colour it is, because depending on the lighting it may look gold or cream. Either way, with its brilliant finish, it’s just nice to look at.
LSTN Beacon REVIEW BY

his summer LSTN released their “true wireless’’ earbudsthe LSTN Beacon. With its eye-catching beauty and sleek design, the Beacon is designed for wireless travel. Forget the wires and connect via Bluetooth to your mobile device with ease. Once you have paired your earbud just hold down the faceplate of the other Beacon earbud to automatically connect. One of my favourite features about the LSTN Beacon is the fast charging case which can hold up to 3-4 charges for the earbuds (which in turn can be in use for up to 3 hours at a time). Though I would have liked a longer charging cable- the micro USB port means charging with a longer cable is not hard to find. Plus you can see the LED indicator lights through the case showing your earbuds being powered up.
with complaints of discomfort or losing earbuds. However, with the LSTN Beacon, none of those challenges existed. The earbuds were a comfort and I shook my head a lot while testing and they stayed snuggly fit. The box also includes several ear tips and wings so your only challenge is discovering your perfect fit.
from sales of all LSTN products go towards giving hearing aids to people in need worldwide through our charity partner, Starkey Hearing Foundation. LSTN has helped more than 30,000 people worldwide, and that number is growing every day.
All in all, if you are a fan of wireless earbuds- the LSTN Beacon really shines bright and stands out from the crowd. Plus who doesn’t love being a force for good….Do consider supporting this worthy cause. Sound & Purpose LSTN was founded with a singular purpose: to change lives through the power of music. Proceeds

Sennheiser HD 25 Robin Schulz Edition REVIEW BY DJ COURTNEY
T
his review of the Sennheiser HD 25 Robin Schulz Edition headphones was done at the Morning Medz event which I DJ-ed at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay, Jamaica; so I decided that would be where I would test them live. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of white DJ Headphones as I find them hard to maintain. Plus given that the event was a breakfast party, initially, I had my doubts, because the morning was extremely hot. However, when I finished they were easy to clean, as for functionality, I was already familiar with the HD25 and they performed exceptionally as was expected. Most people would probably already know that the Sennheiser HD25 is very popular worldwide, having been around from the 80s. So the focus of this review is to see what the differences with this Robin Schulz Edition are. So let’s get into the details because they are still one of the best DJ Headphones on the market.
They are extremely comfortable for a DJ and also for general use. These are probably the lightest professional headphones on the market, the sound is totally amazing and in my opinion even better now, with just the right amount of balance to your ears, great bass and the mid & highs are super clean, basically, you’re hearing every instrument on a track cleanly. The design is the same, they may seem simple, but they are extremely strong and can take a drop without getting a scratch. It has the split headband for adjustment on your head, closed-back design, flip-away ear cups if you need to listen to the crowd, and a 1/4 inch screw-on jack. The other great
thing about the HD25 is that the parts are replaceable, like the ear cups etc., so I’m assuming, these will be also. It’s hard doing a review for these headphones as almost every DJ in the world who have used one will tell you it’s in the top 5 available in the market, it’s a winner no matter what.
Photography by Oneil Banton
So I’m basically going to say these Headphones are now white with the branding of Robin Schulz, who is a great DJ, who has now teamed up with an already great headphone, & they are also Limited Edition, so who am I to complain.

Campfire Audio ATLAS REVIEW BY TRICIA WILLIAMSON
F
irstly, you hear everything!
I played Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled around and Fell in Love” and as I listened through the Campfire Audio Atlas- that’s just what happened. You could hear every single detail down to the age of the record. The quality was simply pristine and the level of detail you get with this dynamic driver is insane. Once you unbox the packaging the inscription “Nicely Done” welcomes you inside. The CampFire Audio Atlas arrives encased in a beautiful black leather zipper case. The stainless steel in-ear monitors each have the earbuds individually enclosed in mini travel bags.

This 10MM Diamond Dome (ADLC) Dynamic Driver with a Beryllium Copper MMCX earphone connector and a pure silver litz wire cable. The cool scientists at Campfire Audio are to be commended for their masterpiece. With this Atlas, old and new songs you have loved will take on whole new meanings. MERCURY FEST SAINT LUCIA 2018
O
nly 3 weeks after an action packed Carnival season, the beautiful, tourism driven island of Saint Lucia followed up keenly with their highly anticipated beach and boat festival, Mercury Fest Saint Lucia. Formerly the hosts of the popular Mercury Beach — initially of Martinican origins — that gained much of its growth on the same Lucian shores of Pigeon Island, saw an end to the event’s four-year run in Saint Lucia. Being one of the most anticipated events of the summer to be held on island, however, the proactive action of Epic Events and the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority seized the opportunity to fill the gap with their own version of the same concept to satisfy the ever growing demand. The two day event comprised of three events between August 10th & 11th. Its inaugural installment of the now 100% locally produced festival attracted an influx of visitors from all around the region, with over 4000 guests from the French speaking territories where the concept was populated. It is also estimated to have hosted over 150 vessels, which included

speedboats, catamarans and yachts from Martinique and Guadaloupe, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Marteen, Puerto Rico, Africa, France and Canada. Clearly a successful replacement, Mercury Fest generally followed a similar format to its predecessor, with a concert-styled event on Friday night and the typical massive beach party during the day on Saturday at the same venue. Tickets to the events were sold independently, costing EC$100/EU$33 for the Friday alone and EC$150/ EU$50 for Saturday only, or as a two-day pass for one price of EC$230/EU$75. As per last year, the Gros Islet Street Party was also promoted as the pre party to the concert, and was a free addition to help usher in the fantastic vibe of the wild weekend. Often called the “Spring Break of the Caribbean,” the festivities started on August 10 from 8pm with the traditional Friday night street party in Gros Islet, where the electric atmosphere of the weekend was off to a roaring start. Foreigners and locals could be seen in the packed streets of the vibrant
little village enjoying the unique culinary delights of the island or drinking and dancing the night away to the local entertainment. Visitors were offered a smooth introduction to the culture of partying like a local, while also promoting the integration of the variety of cultures present on the island. After their crash course at Gros Islet, ticket holders and spontaneous pumpers alike made their way over to Pigeon Island beach for the first official offering of Mercury Fest 2018. For the first time, the venue was outlined in such a way that even the beach’s local vendor huts were incorporated into the event, providing a wide variety of food options and even smaller bar alternatives (a local revenue stream that was missing in previous years). Hosted on both days by the domestic beauty, Mareen Alexander, and energetically translated by the bubbly Esmerasta from Martinique, the show drew an impressive crowd for Friday’s headliner, Kalash. The French Dancehall sensation, known for his hits ‘Free Me’, ‘Taken’ and ‘Mwaka Moon’ was preceded by local artistes such as Ricky T before gracing the stage to the delight of the ecstatic and heavily French populated crowd. However, both French and English speakers alike united in singing the Martinican star’s lyrics word for word as he continued to entice the crowd more and more with his ‘Mavado-esque’ style. Kalash impressively closed the first show, leaving people in great anticipation for the grand festivities of the following day. www.panachejamagazine.com | 25
Wasting no time, patrons and vessels began arriving from 9am on Saturday. The classic theme of boats, bikinis, foam and fun was in full effect, with rows of boats lining the entire span of beach, and people swimming and basking in the calm, clear waters. Advertised as the “ultimate beach party,” the festival provided an abundance of the most beautiful women and coolest personalities of the Caribbean. The picturesque ambience provided by the foamy fun and magnificent weather were amplified by the entrancing music by some of the top DJs from Martinique and Saint Lucia, including the likes of DJ Gil, Levi Chin, Hollywood HP and DJ Litchie on the impressive cast. The growing crowd was also treated to performances by the very best Saint Lucian artistes including Shemmy J, Sedale, Mata & Migos, Keisha, Teddyson John and Cooyah leading up to the headline act, Jamaica’s dancehall superstar, Popcaan.

The popular Jamaican artiste had the crowd chanting his lyrics to every song, and completely captivated by his entertaining antics. He previewed stand out songs from his new album, Forever, such as ‘Silence’, ‘Foreign Love’ and ‘Firm and Strong’. He gave a performance that indubitably left both patrons and promoters satisfied with the Mercury Fest product for 2018, and eagerly looking onward to the future of the festival. For its first edition, Mercury Fest definitely kept all its promises, as well as keeping the major boat and beach event alive in the island of Saint Lucia. Each year the nautical event succeeds to provide a memorable experience to attendees as the biggest and best beach party. Tourism Minister, Mr. Dominic Fedee said he sees it as a tremendous success, especially in light of the enormous economic impact it has on the island. His hopes are that it continues to gain traction and pull even bigger and more diverse crowds as the event is way more than just a party. It also features local gourmet cuisine, premium drinks, and promotes international integration, home-grown talent and exceptional entertainment from around the region. It is an opportunity to promote Saint Lucian culture and arts while encouraging the engagement of the wider Caribbean region in this all-encompassing experience. The vision is that the two-day festival will gain similar regional and international
recognition as other notable Caribbean festivals, such as Dream Weekend in Jamaica. This will further boost tourism in Saint Lucia, and by extension, the economy while playing a role deepening Caribbean integration. The saying “out with the old, and in with the new” may be quite applicable for the little island with big dreams, it seems. Regardless, one thing is certain: in the island of Saint Lucia, Mercury Fest is by far the best and biggest beach party of the summer. See you there in 2019! Wasting no time, Day 2 patrons and the line water vessels began arriving from 9am. The classic theme of boats, bikinis, foam and fun was in full effect, with rows of boats lining the entire span of beach, and people swimming and basking in the calm, clear waters. Advertised as the “ultimate beach party,” the festival provided an abundance of the most beautiful women and coolest of the Caribbean. The picturesque ambience provided by the foamy fun, the magnificent weather were amplified by entrancing music by some of the top DJs from Martinique and St. Lucia, including the likes of DJ Gil, Levi Chin, Hollywood HP and DJ Litchie on the impressive cast. Performances by the very best Saint Lucian artistes including Shemmy J, Sedale, Mata & Migos, Keisha, Teddyson John and Cooyah— leading up to the headline act, Jamaica’s dancehall superstar Popcaan. The Jamaican superstar had the crowd chanting his lyrics of every song, and

completely captivated by his entertaining antics. He previewed stand out songs from his new album, Forever, such as Silence, Foreign Love and Firm and Strong. He gave a performance that indubitably left both patrons and promoters satisfied with the Mercury Fest product for 2018, and eagerly looking onward to the future of the festival. For its first edition, Mercury Fest definitely kept all its promises, as well as keeping the major boat and beach event alive in the island of St. Lucia. Each year the nautical event succeeds to provide a memorable experience to attendees as the biggest and best beach party. Tourism Minister, Mr. Dominic Fedee said he sees it as a tremendous success, especially in light of the enormous economic impact it has on the island. He said hopes it continues to gain traction and pull even bigger and more diverse crowds. The event is more than a party. It displays local gourmet cuisine, premium drinks, and promotes international integration, home-grown

talent and exceptional entertainment from around the region. It is an opportunity to promote St. Lucian culture and arts while encouraging the engagement of the wider Caribbean region in this all-encompassing experience. The vision is that the two-day festival will gain similar regional and international recognition as other notable Caribbean festivals, such as Dream Weekend in Jamaica. This will further boost tourism in St. Lucia, and by extension, the economy while playing a role deepening Caribbean integration. The saying “out with the old, and in with the new may be quite applicable for the little island with big dreams, because one thing is certain: in the island of St. Lucia, Mercury Fest is by far the best and biggest beach party of the summer. Patrons love restaurant and bar not only for the culinary creations and cool vibes but the great music you can not only hear played but see displayed on the walls like a walk of fame. Let’s talk with the powerhouse behind it all… Chef Taka.

TAKA, BEER MUG FRIDAYs and more… Everyone knows Chef Utoguchi but everyone simply calls this cool culinary maestro, “Taka”. He established East Japanese in 2004 and officially opened doors in 2005. A collector of vinyl records many of which are proudly displayed in his restaurant in Market Place in Kingston, Jamaica. Taka loves oldies music, Jamaican music from reggae, ska to dancehall and beyond. His impressive record collection, which he calls a “hobby”, is beautifully showcased in the bar’s exceptional décor which is nothing less than a walk through the decades and genres of Jamaican music. East Japanese is the perfect melting pot of Jamaican music & culture with Japanese style and cuisine. About a year ago Taka had a vision of introducing some of the island’s best Selectas and DJs at East Japanese and does so through the event series dubbed “Beer Mug Friday”. The weekly Friday event is a mustexperience and has featured top Selectas and DJs such as Rory Stone Love, Bad Gyal Marie, DJ Courtney, DJ Delano, DJ Kurt Riley and runs from 7 pm to 3 am. Best of all, Admission is FREE. A gathering that at its origins started out very slow has now grown into a movement filling the bar from wall to wall each week. In his reflection of the

growing success, Taka shared with his signature smile, “Everyone loves my place!

When asked about his vision for growing East Japanese beyond Kingston in the years ahead, Taka was clear. Right now, he prefers to focus “only on Kingston”. Kingston in his eyes is a vibrant business place and is seeing its increasing share of tourists. Plus, it also serves as an excellent hub with connections to places like Miami. Taka loves that Jamaica’s capital has no “on and off season”, he added, “Kingston is always on! Plus, the people here are very interesting and they love my place!” East Japanese is an experience not to be missed. Next time you’re in Kingston, Jamaica be sure to stop by and experience it for yourself whether you’re sitting down for sushi or raising a shot at Beer Mug Fridays….. Like Taka always says you’ll “love this place!”

Miami Beach's Oasis for Luxury Comfort & Style BY TRICIA WILLIAMSON

estled on M i a m i Beach and just minutes away from the vibrant Art Deco District, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel is truly your hotel to call home. The excellence in customer service starts even before you arrive at the hotel. I personally received an email days before my arrival which not only welcomed me to the hotel but also took the notation of any food allergies and special requirements I or my guests may have had.

The first thing that really sets Loews Miami apart from the rest is their commitment to excellent customer service. Everyone truly makes you feel like a VIP and always willing to assist you. One such example was at the checkin desk, I had arrived hours before the usual afternoon check-in time and surprisingly the room was ready and I was allowed to go up and rest. For a traveller, who has been up flying from 2 a.m. in the morning to arrive in Miami at 12noon- I can’t share enough how much that meant to be able to do that upon arrival. Loews offers you a wonderful service called "Chat Your Service" where you can also text message whatever you need and it is handled. The turndown service was excellent and it really left you feeling welcomed home, especially after long days out in the heat of this beautiful sun-kissed city. This renowned oceanfront resort is truly Miami Beach’s oasis for luxury comfort perfectly blended with sophisticated style, exceptional service, and great value for money. Be sure to immerse your taste buds in the culinary creations offered in the food and beverage experience known as the "Flavor Miami". I also enjoyed early morning swims in the oceanfront poolscape as well as relaxing in the St. Tropez-inspired SOAK Cabanas and Daybeds. Loews Miami Beach Hotel is one of the most “instagrammable” hotels I have ever enjoyed (Find them on Instagram @LoewsMiami). From the from the hip strip side to the oceanfront you’ll love sharing your experiences with the world from this hotel. The private beach access was also great for long walks in the evenings along the boardwalk and just quick access to the sun and sand of the beach front. As a Travel Editor, I have stayed at several hotels in Miami and Loews was a truly unforgettable experience and now my favourite places to stay. It’s the little things they do to truly make your stay great. From the ice cool flavoured waters of cucumbers to watermelon all around the resort. After walking the strip or coming from the beach, there is no greater refreshment that a tall cool drink from Lowes in the Miami sun. It’s the beautiful platter of fruits, chocolates, mojito cocktails (featuring a bottle of locally distilled rum) and chips that greeted you in your room after a long hard day’s work. It’s the genuine warmth and care of the staff as they tend to all your needs. It’s the beautifully designed room with an ocean front view that you just love coming home to each day.

Evening of Jamaican Film BY MARSHELLE HASELEY
In the intimate audio-visual auditorium of NALIS, Jamaicans living in TT and Trinbagonians sat together for laughter, reflection and art. The films shown were One Patty, by filmmaker Angela Gay Magnus, This City of Mine by Daniella Russell, Fever Dream by Nile Saulter, Mango Wars by Kyle Chin and Code by Sarah Manley. The films created by these filmmakers and their talented teams captured various features of Jamaican life and culture. No one short film revolved too much about the ever featured inner-city gang violence and dancehall culture. The film Mango Wars was more on the comedic side. It captured the culture of others feeling entitled to the mangoes, or any fruit for that matter growing in someone’s yard by neighbours or even passersby. The film also showed a more emotional and sensitive side to a Jamaican man in how the main character related to his wife—a character type not generally shown in Jamaican films. Fever dream and Code both used the power of film to capture two different experiences of many Jamaicans— the inner city man, dreaming of a new way of life,
44 |
www.panachejamagazine.com
and a youth confined by the fences of religion, which restricts him from fulfilling his dreams, though they do not challenge religious ideals in the least. In both films, the characters find ways of ‘tricking the system’ and swimming against the tide of the life destiny gave to them— which saw them each character charting his own new path and finding their own pots of gold. One Patty, and This City of Mine both capture some nuances of city life in Kingston. The films paint pictures of a lower-middle-class Jamaican experience not widely explored through local film. One Patty had themes connected to trusting the process and relaxing into life— while This City of Mine touched on issues of gender and the insecurities experienced by people from various parts of Jamaica, when they find themselves in new or unusual spaces of the island. High Commissioner of Jamaica in Port of Spain, Trinidad H.E. David Prendergast said he was delighted at the opportunity to promote Jamaica's creative industries, as well as enhance the bilateral relations, mutual understanding and contact between our countries and people. "There is no better way to do so, but to bring part of our creative product to your doorstep, once again," Prendergast said. Prendergast said the evening marked an important occasion for us, as we showcase an aspect of brand Jamaica—that of our film industry, in Trinidad and Tobago. The event ended with applause, laughter and Jamaican patties. For the Jamaicans in the audience, the even was a wonderful taste of home, in every sense.

The Victoria Pier
DOWNTOWN KINGSTON'S NEW CHILLSPOT OPENS ITS DOORS! BY TRICIA WILLIAMSON
The new entertainment hotspot at Victoria Pier on the Kingston waterfront recently opened for business. The previous facility was closed nearly two decades. The redevelopment of the complex will span nearly 2,000 square metres on three levels. In a local newspaper report published in December 2017, it stated that the “first floor is slated to house a sports bar, which is likely to be operated by Ribbiz, while the second floor will have a branch of the renowned seafood establishment Gloria’s, which is renting the space to replicate the Port Royal experience. In late August when PANACHE visited Gloria's was open and in bustling with business and full to capacity. On the first floor, word on the ground was that RIbbiz was preparing to open soon and the Ocean 7 Sky Bar was preparing for an event later that night.
Devon House Ice Cream lovers will take pleasure in knowing that their I'Scream shop was also open for business and serving up their world-famous treats right alongside Island Coffee cafe. It is expected that a pizza parlour and a natural juice outlet will come onstream in the future. There is ample security on the premises and most patrons drive to the location whether by private vehicles or chartered taxis. The local is a great chillspot whether during the day or at night. Just be sure to have your logistics planned out while downtown. The redevelopment of the Victoria Pier is an important part of its plans for the redevelopment of downtown Kingston. Calabash
THE LITERARY FESTIVAL OF 2018
The Authors' Reviews Photography by Collin Reid
O
ne of the best ways to spend a weekend anywhere in the world is at the Calabash International Literary Festival in Treasure Beach. A small fishing village on Jamaica’s rugged south coast may sound like an odd place for book lovers from around to congregate but that seaside haven is exactly where thousands make a pilgrimage to every other year. Yes thousands! From all over Jamaica and from all over the world for 3 days and nights of readings and music which are all presented for free. As the organisers say “Passion is the only price of entry”. Started in 2001 by three friends, Colin Channer, Kwame Dawes and Justine Henzell Calabash is now firmly established on the world calendar of literary events and has hosted Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer prize winners, Man Booker Prize winners, MacArthur Genius Award winners and many Poet Laureates from around the world. The 2018 staging saw four Lady Laureates reading together for the very first time anywhere – Carol Ann Duffy from the UK, Georgette LeBlanc from Canada, Tracy Kay Smith from the USA and Jamaica’s own Lorna Goodison. Readings of poetry, fiction and non-fiction and memoir are all popular as are the in-depth and often hilarious conversations. Open Mic is expertly guided by Professor Carolyn Cooper and the standard is very high – the audience makes sure of that! The next staging of Calabash will be May 29-31 2020 so make your reservations now! Follow @calabashfest for all updates.

Calabash is one of the world's best literary festivals. But don't just take our word for it, check out the feedback on the event by some of the authors that attended the event...
Everything is magic at Calabash. It's both author and reader heaven. The audience, the community, and the whole vibe of the weekend lock in perfectly together so that, somehow, staring out at the ocean, discussing great novels and reading from one's own work feel like the same brand of indulgence.
• • • TAYARI JONES

Calabash is more than a meeting of the minds— it is a gathering of hearts and spirits. I have been to dozens of literary festivals but never before have I participated in one like this. Calabash values the audience as much as the writers. There by the sea, relationship between the artist and reader is nurtured and celebrated in such a way that everyone leaves the festival grounds felling blessed and enriched. I am grateful to have been invited to take part in this special communion.
Calabash, which takes place in the sunwashed juncture between language and song, is a revivifying and rollicking respite from a world intent on proving that the voice doesn't matter. Suddenly that whole world occupies a tiny slice of shore, and the gorgeously commingled sound that rises during those three days jolts, nurtures and inspires. This gathering is vital, if we are to keep believing in the power of what we do.
• • • JOSHUA JELLY-SCHAPIRO Thanks so much to you and Kwame for this kind thank you -- and, once more, for ALL: I had a tremendous time. I've just exchanged notes with Kwame under separate cover so will aim not to be redundant here, but suffice to say you've got another brother-in-Calabash -- I plan to support the fest, however I can, and be an ally (and attend!) from here on out. There is, I think, a very lot I can do to do help the cause, from
48 |
www.panachejamagazine.com
wrangling writers and press to raising profile in NYC and in media here, however is most helpful and wherever you'd most like Calabash to be covered. (To say nothing of strengthening those ties to the US Embassy, which is talking with me now about becoming a Fulbright specialist scholar, to get down regularly).
JOSHUA JELLY-SCHAPIRO (cont'd) I especially appreciate your good word on that opening session; if I did warm the stage and kick things off in a way that worked, well: that's what matters. Of course my own sole regret, as you surmise, was that I didn't go on longer or do the crowd-pleasing passages from Cuba and Trinidad that I usually do at readings. A couple people I trust had intimated to me, beforehand, that just doing the Nine Miles scene and leaving it there would work well -- but as soon as I caught the actual vibe of the fest for myself, I wished I'd done more! Anyway c'est la vie. Now I know. And best believe I'll be back in JA to read other stuff soon. As you know, I so deeply enjoyed rolling around visiting schools and so on, with the exceptional Summer. So thank you, once more, for helping that happen: it's what I most like to do with this book: connect with those it's about, and share my work with students.
• • • SAFIA ELHILLO I’m having such Calabash withdrawal! It was one of the most special weeks of my life—I’m so honored to have shared space with you all. Now to frantically try and finish another book in time for Calabash 2020 :). “Calabash was one of the most special weeks of my life—it felt, simultaneously, like a family reunion and like my dream lineup of writers, all set against the most gorgeous backdrop. Reading poems while hearing the waves crash behind me—I might never be able to read poems any other way after this!
• • • HARI KUNZRU I'm so happy to have been part of Calabash. It has connected me to Jamaica, and to a new set of Jamaican writer friends. I'm already making plans to come back, and I hope that my relationship to the country develops in the coming years.

• • • PETER KIMANI I really enjoyed myself at the Calabash (as you both witnessed!) meeting with wonderful people and savouring Jamaican hospitality. I felt, literally, completely at home. It was an affirmation of what another member of the Calabash family, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, told me earlier: that Calabash is truly the best arts festival in the world. By putting the local community at the heart of the festival, Calabash restores the arts where they belong: the people. I thank you both for devoting your gifts and energies to making Calabash what it is today. And thanks especially for inviting me. This certainly was one of the highlights of my writing career, and I hope our paths will cross again soon.

Garth Voisin BY MARSHELLE HASELEY
At first glance, one’s first assumption would not be that he is a writer. Traditionally, writers seemed to have always manifested as middle-aged scholars, who would seem far removed from most of their potential audience. Voisin however, shows up in the world in a way that could make anyone comfortable and see him as relatable, while asserting himself in a way that effortlessly commands attention and respect. “My mantra is, ‘Faith has to be more than a fancy saying. Faith has to be an action’,” Voisin said. “I say this because everyone prays, but fail to take actions toward what they want. People say they have faith, but they are afraid to take the leap in the direction of their dreams and goals— not me.” He recently released his second book, “My thoughts on the way over.” He has been receiving feedback proving the profound impact of his work from readers in the Caribbean and US. Readers range from the youth in Trinidad, to well- known actors in Hollywood. This neo-Caribbean man, who now has the ability to impact a new generation of creatives said he did not see himself becoming a writer. He had options that would probably give him greater
financial rewards by popular vote, but he decided to do something to make a deeper impact on a wide scale.
PANACHE asked Garth what he wanted to be as a youngster— he said, “I thought I’d be footballer at first,” after which he laughed. “I then thought I would be a celebrity trainer— writer was not on the radar, even though I’ve been journaling since I was young.” Voisin said, “Truth is, I had a few acting gigs, and my experiences were not good.” “I was introduced to some grimy people, and realized I was not willing to give what they wanted from me,” he said. It was as a result of the speed bumps encountered that he decided to change the trajectory of his life. “So writing and publishing my books (which I had lots of material from writing on Facebook) was the one thing I remained passionate about, and felt good about creating, day in and day out.” He said becoming focused on one thing allowed him to invest 100% of his creative energies. Voisin said his perception of things changed, and he realized that writing was his passion. www.panachejamagazine.com | 53
“My motivation comes from all the things I am still able to do for my family. I’ve always had what I needed growing up, so ensuring my parents are comfortable is first on my list, and the kids having all they need is a priority,” Voisin said. Asked if he has gotten less than favourable responses. He said, “Funny thing is when I decided to start writing was told no one would want to read my writing, so I should stick to modeling and acting. But I believe everyone will have their opinions— good and bad, favorable and unfavorable. So I guess this serves as my motivation, to prove them wrong.” Asked how he balanced writing with modeling and personal training, Voisin said it took time, but he learned along the journey. He learned to not only seek balance, but to learn how inject his energy into one thing at time, and said this practice takes some tunnel vision at times, but by doing things fueled by passion he remains consistent and persistent in spite of how challenging they may be at times. In closing the interview, PANACHE asked Garth a few more questions: PANACHE: What inspired you to work on another book? Garth: The Journey itself is inspiration. I really think that we’re put here to have experiences, good and bad, and we should share them with the ones that haven’t had them as yet. I think I just attached a purpose to my passion. PANACHE: How has it been, making an impact on a larger scale? Garth: It feels great! The idea behind the Journey is to share it with at least one person— and if that helps make a difference, then my job is done. So therefore, helping on a larger scale means you can’t feel anything but great about that.
54 |
www.panachejamagazine.com
PANACHE: Does being from the Caribbean make a difference in how you see life? And does it affect how people interact with you? Garth: That’s a great question. Being from the Caribbean does make a difference in how I see life, and how I think about where I’d like to be. I have an appreciation for how I grew up in Trinidad and the interactions with people. It’s where I learned the idea of family and community— which is ingrained in me. As for how people interact from me, it does make a difference. It’s a great conversation starter, once they hear the accent. People seem to have less walls up as their questions are initially directed toward finding out which island I am from, and how the beaches are there—or at what point of the year we’re having Carnival (hahaha).” Garth Voisin is a man who may be generally prejudged based on his physical appearance, but he passionately continues to prove onlookers wrong along his journey by seeking to become his best self—mind, body and soul. While seeking to become his ultimate self, Voisin retains passion for inspiring others to acknowledge their innate right as human beings to do the same. Asked what he would tell his 18- year-old self, his response was, “Don’t worry, everything will fall into place. Keep being consistent, and keep the faith. .
Book cover of "The Journey Continues" by Von Jeff.
He realised what he felt inspired to share through writing had profound purpose attached to it. His new mindset was therefore to help as many people as possible through writing— if even one person at time.

We can’t wait to offer our guests another way to experience Jamaica’s natural beauty and culture, and deepen our commitment to our local community. It is also only fitting that we are bringing Miss Lily’s home and celebrating the island’s beautiful people and rich culture, which have always been a constant inspiration to me,” adds Salmon. Encircled by two acres of lush property, Skylark Negril Beach Resort is situated along Negril’s famous white sand Seven Mile Beach, offering 220 feet of pristine beachfront and sweeping views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. The dinner was a huge success and the event raised US $10,000 for the Rockhouse Foundation which is dedicated to empowering Negril's educational facilities. Most recently the foundation completed its most ambitious project — the construction of the Savanna-la-Mar Inclusive Infant Academy (SIIA). The school is the first mixed-ability, special needs early childhood school in Western Jamaica. In its first year of operation, 30 three-year-old children were enrolled and this September, another 30 students will arrive for the new school term. Jamaica's own 'Chopped Champion' and Miss Lily's Chef Andre Fowles helped St. Lucian-born Chef Compton prepare the jerk-themed five course meal. The final menu from the evening's charity dinner include Jerked Barracuda, Jerked Oxtail, Breadfruit Gnocchi, Dasheen Puree, Jerked Mango, Coconut Rice Pudding and more.
