The Madison Area Dachshund Club will host the Dachshund Club of America 2024 National Field Trial April 20-21, at the Northern Illinois Brace Club in Roscoe, Illinois (pending AKC approval).

Stakes will be run consecutively over the two days, with Open Bitches and FC Bitches likely running on Saturday, followed by Open Dogs and FC Dogs on Sunday.

Michael Nothstein and Stacey Sullivan have accepted the assignments to judge the FC Dog and FC Bitch stakes, and Wendy Snyder and Val Higginbotham have accepted the assignments to judge the Open Dog and Open Bitch stakes.

The Madison Area Dachshund Club will host two trials over three days April 22-24.

It is anticipated that two trials over three days will allow stakes to be run consecutively.

MADC is in the process of inviting judges for their trials.

At this time, it is anticipated that the annual awards dinner will be held on Sunday, April 21 at the club grounds.

A friend who lives beside a lake had been seeing a flightless Turkey Vulture in her yard for three days, on and off. The bird’s left wing drooped and it could not fly. It seemed to disappear for part of the day, then appear near her house. She gave it some sliced turkey from the deli, which it ate, then disappeared again. She told me about the bird and I offered to help her catch it. There is a bird rescue organization in the northern part of the state. A volunteer would take the bird to the rehab center if we’d catch it.

Novel Diagnostic Test for Canine and Feline Microbiota Dysbiosis

C

ommon knowledge for years has been that good and bad bacteria – also known as microbiota – live in the gastrointestinal systems (microbiome) of mammals. Yet, the majority of commercially available diagnostic tests still only test for the bad, harmful bacteria – until now.

The Canine and Feline Microbiota Dysbiosis Index(DI) – available at Texas A&M University (TAMU) – analyzes the abundances of seven different good and bad bacteria in feces, and then calculates a single number that indicates the level of gut dysbiosis. This imbalance – dysbiosis – of these key bacteria is often associated with broad spectrum antibiotic use or chronic enteropathies.

The operative word here is “associated” because this test does not diagnose enteropathies. Enteropathies are currently diagnosed with a variety of tests involving bloodwork, enteroscopy, endoscopy, or by trial and error approaches.

In dogs alone, there are several documented types of enteropathies such as histiocytic ulcerative colitis, protein-losing enteropathy, immunosuppressant-responsive enteropathy, antibiotic-responsive enteropathy, steroidresponsive enteropathy, food-responsive enteropathy, lymphocytic-plasmacytic gastroenteritis, and eosinophilic gastroenteritis.

While all enteropathies are inflammations somewhere within the intestinal tract, the root causes of each enteropathy are often enigmatic, complex, multifactorial, and different from another. So, accepted treatment options are limited and, again, somewhat varied based on the type of enteropathy.

Enteropathies – and treatments for the enteropathy or another disease – influence and impact the good and bad bacteria in the gut and their associated bodily mechanisms. So, the noninvasive DI can be run to pinpoint how the microbiota are doing at any single point in time.

Additionally, the test can be used longitudinally to gauge the bacterial response to disease progression, response to therapeutics, or provide clues to manage disease. Not only does this help the individual dogs and cats, but also provides a resource database that can help guide disease management to slow its progression in the future.

Dysbiosis Index Studies Thus far, the studies using the DI have provided important findings such as the length of dysbiosis caused by antibiotic use. We have always known that broad spectrum antibiotics target not only bad bacteria, but also good bacteria. Thus, their use can cause a dysbiosis in the gut. The question is for how long does this imbalance persist? TAMU’s research has documented at least four weeks after the discontinuation of 14-day metronidazole in dogs.

In a longitudinal study involving dogs diagnosed with steroid-responsive enteropathy, findings based on the DI suggest that corticosteroids can help manage the disease, but that dysbiosis can persist in dogs. While we are disappointed by this finding, we acknowledge that a suitable alternative treatment has not been found or developed yet.

The DI also has helped the researchers discover that probiotics can accelerate the normalization of the microbiomeand suppress the presence of invasive Clostridium perfringens in dogs diagnosed with acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome.

Peptacetobacter hiranonis Formally known as Clostridium hiranonis, Peptacetobacter hiranonis (P hiranonis) is an important bacterium for dogs, as it converts

primary bile acids into secondary bile acids.

Those secondary bile acids have antiinflammatory and anti-pathogenic powers by suppressing bad bacteria such as Clostridium difficile, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli. So, a suboptimum amount of P hiranonis along with a high DI are associated with antibiotic use, enteropathies, and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

A recent study indicated that P hiranonis had the same critical function for cats. 15 out of 16 cats with chronic enteropathies had a fecal abundance of P hiranonis below the reference interval, which might be the cause of higher levels of primary bile acids found in their feces.

Fecal Microbiota Transfer Therapy Today, much focus has been placed on the role of fecal microbiota transfer (FMT) and whether it works.

For those who are unfamiliar with FMT, the process transfers feces from a healthy human or animal donor to the same species with a gastric condition. The Food and Drug Administration recently approved Vowst, a capsule, for use in humans. Parallel FMT use in companion animals is available from groups such as Dr. Margo Roman, Animal Biome, and TAMU. TAMU along with researchers at Helsinki University published a study in early 2023 that demonstrated 31 out of 41 dogs that received FMT had less diarrhea and became more active.

Using the DI, 16 dogs with gastrointestinal issues had samples taken before and after treatment. Dogs with a higher number on the DI – which indicated greater dysbiosis – did not respond as well to FMT as dogs with lower original numbers on the DI scale. This bodily response was to be expected because the dogs with greater dysbiosis do have more clinical disease to overcome. They may need additional treatments, different fecal donors, or varying amounts of certain bacteria. That will need to be determined in the future.

As previously mentioned, P hiranonis plays a significant role in the fight against gastric dysbiosis in dogs. So, these researchers highly recommend that all donor dogs should be tested not only for parasites and bad bacteria, but also to ensure they have adequate amounts of P hiranonis. This DI test is perfectly suited to determine the appropriate amount of P hiranonis from healthy donor dogs. Please remember,

however, that the healthy donor people and dogs may eat food ingredients that the ill recipients cannot tolerate; thus, donor and recipient people and dogs need to be matched for food tolerances, including glutens.

A scientific analysis published in Veterinary and Comparative Oncology using Golden Retriever Lifetime Study data notes a potential correlation between canine sterilization and hemangiosarcoma development. This startling finding has been previously suggested by experts, but still is poorly understood.

Connection between sterilization, hemangiosarcoma continued from page 7 dogs face a similar risk of contracting the disease. Interestingly, the probability of diagnosis for intact females consistently remains lower than any other sex/neutering status.

Meanwhile, the likelihood of diagnosis in spayed females increases.

Hemangiosarcoma is the most common cancer diagnosed in the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study cohort. It is a particularly deadly cancer, with roughly 90% of dogs dead within one year of diagnosis. Few dogs survive longer than two years, even with aggressive therapy.

Dr. Alison Hillman, a researcher involved in the study and a Senior Epidemiology Consultant at Ausvet, emphasized the need for further exploration into the potential correlation between canine cancer and sterilization, urging the inclusion of more data from older dogs.

Furthermore, she added that continued analysis honing in on the link between hemangiosarcoma and sterilization will provide more insight into potential causative factors.

“This information may also be of value in the context of translational research, as hemangiosarcoma is rare in humans and thus difficult to study,” Hillman said. “Lessons learned through research in dogs may inform prioritization of investigations in humans, given the similarity between dogs and humans regarding the clinical and pathological features of this tumor, and the relative similarity in genetics between the two species as compared to, for example, mice and humans.”

“Thanks to the availability of data from the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study through Morris Animal Foundation's Data Commons, analyses like these are possible,” said Kathy Tietje, the Foundation's Chief Program Officer, who was also involved in the project.

“This analysis serves as a fundamental research tool, with potential for further use by other scientists to generate hypotheses and design their own studies," she added. “It also underscores the immense value of the Study’s resources for scientists actively engaged in this field.”

New Treatment Strategies for Canine Mammary Tumors

By Sharon M. Albright, DVM, CCRT Updated October 2023 (Originally published August 2018) Canine mammary tumors are common in middle-aged or older bitches. Risk factors include increased age, exposure to ovarian and growth hormones, ovariectomy after 2.5 years of age, and obesity at a young age.

Approximately half of these tumors are malignant and local recurrence and distant spread are possible following surgical removal. Prognosis is affected by the tumor size, type (adenocarcinoma or sarcoma), grade (biologic aggressiveness), and clinical stage (spread of disease throughout the body) at diagnosis. While these tumors are rarely fatal, they remain a major health concern for intact females. The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) and its donors are committed to improving the health of all dogs and have funded several studies aimed at new treatment strategies for canine mammary tumors.

microenvironment show promise to improve outcomes for dogs with mammary cancer.

Investigators at The Ohio State University are exploring the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to help clinicians achieve adequate margins during surgical removal of canine mammary tumors and soft tissue sarcomas. OCT uses light waves to generate real time highresolution images of tissues to detect residual cancer cells immediately following surgical removal. Results thus far demonstrated that different tissue types have unique characteristics on OCT images, which closely correlate with standard microscopic biopsy images. With training, clinicians have been able to accurately interpret OCT images. Ongoing study is evaluating whether OCT can improve the accuracy of detecting residual cancer in dogs following surgical removal compared to traditional biopsy. Use of this technology shows promise in minimizing the need for additional surgeries or other treatments and to decrease tumor recurrence in dogs with mammary tumors.

Other advancements in the treatment of canine mammary tumors expand upon the discovery that the tumor microenvironment Covetrus Pet Care 2023 helps regulate biologic behavior in human breast cancer. Similarly in dogs, nonmalignant cells and other materials surrounding a mammary tumor, specifically collagen, help regulate the growth and spread of cancer.

Canine Mammary Tumors continued from page 8 associated collagen signatures predict the clinical outcome for affected patients better than other commonly used biomarkers. They are now using these collagen signatures in a clinical setting to determine if they can predict clinical outcome for previously challenging tumor types.

Ongoing studies are also examining what factors promote formation of tumor-favorable collagen signatures and if biomaterials placed in the resected tumor site can help prevent tumor regrowth.

Surgical removal remains the gold standard treatment for canine mammary tumors. However, recent advancements in CHF-funded studies have introduced groundbreaking tools that may change the way we approach this treatment. These innovative tools not only allow surgeons to completely remove tumor tissue in one surgery but also provide valuable biomarkers that offer insights into tumor prognosis and open up new avenues for treatment options. Breed-Specific Pain Sensitivity in Dogs

Is a Chihuahua tougher than a Rottweiler?

Is a Husky more sensitive than a Boston Terrier?

Many people have opinions on these types of breed-related differences.

In a survey of over 1,000 veterinarians, 95% of respondents agreed that dog breeds differ in pain sensitivity. That sentiment was similarly reflected in a survey of the general public (also more than 1,000 respondents). However, veterinarians ranked breeds differently than the public with regard to pain sensitivity.

Until recently, there was no scientific evidence that dog breeds differ in their pain sensitivity. However, a team of AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) funded investigators at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine have published results from their groundbreaking study which may radically change how we understand canine pain. Why does it matter?

The existence of differences in pain sensitivity between different dog breeds would significantly impact the diagnosis and management of canine pain. If there are physiologic differences in how dog breeds experience pain, what are the mechanisms and/or genetics involved? Can we modify pain management protocols to target these individual mechanisms and therefore improve pain relief and minimize unwanted side effects?

If physiologic differences in pain sensitivity between different dog breeds do NOT exist, do our human beliefs about breed behavior or temperament still influence how we recognize and treat pain in individual dogs?

Such false beliefs by owners or veterinary professionals could be detrimental to our canine friends, as dogs of breeds thought to be ‘tough’ may not receive appropriate treatment for their pain.

The study CHF-funded researchers set out to answer this important question – do dog breeds differ in pain sensitivity? For this study, 149 client-owned dogs representing ten breeds or breed types were tested using quantitative sensory testing (QST). In addition, their owners completed questionnaires and behavioral tests were conducted.

QST methods are non-invasive, semi-objective tests used to measure the nervous system’s response to a standardized

stimulus in a laboratory setting. A noxious stimulus is applied (such as mechanical pressure or hot/cold temperature), the sensation is detected by pain receptors and relayed to the central nervous system, and the subject indicates discomfort. Two mechanical pressure tests and one thermal test (heat) were applied to the carpus (front leg) of dogs participating in this study. Humans can verbally express their discomfort.

For this study, investigators assumed discomfort and removed the stimulus whenever the dog pulled their leg away, vocalized, stopped panting, licked their lips, and/or looked at the stimulus.

Since investigators had to use a behavioral response to indicate pain sensation in dogs, they also completed some tests of emotional reactivity to see if individual behavioral differences influenced the QST measurements. They timed how long it took each dog to approach a novel object (a mechanical monkey toy) and scored each dog’s initial response and approach to a disgruntled stranger.

The surprising results QST testing revealed breed differences in pain sensitivity thresholds.

While there were also breed differences in emotional reactivity, the pain sensitivity differences remained even after accounting for reactivity.

Therefore, behavioral differences alone were not sufficient to explain the pain sensitivity variations.

Veterinarian pain sensitivity rankings did not match those found on QST testing. However, they did correlate with how dogs approached the disgruntled stranger. This test measured fear and anxiety that could be experienced separate from pain at the veterinary clinic. Breeds that were reported as more sensitive to pain were those that were more hesitant to approach the disgruntled stranger. So perhaps a dog’s initial interaction with the veterinary team influences the team’s beliefs about breed-specific pain sensitivity?

Future study Results from this study have profound implications for recognizing and treating pain in dogs. QST results from the largest group of dogs studied to date demonstrated breed-specific pain sensitivity thresholds independent of sex or behavioral reactivity. Scientists can now explore the genetic and physiologic differences that explain breed-specific mechanisms of canine pain and use them to develop better diagnostic and treatment tools. Future studies evaluating the efficacy of medications or tools for canine pain relief must involve dogs of various breeds in their study design.

It will also be helpful to explore how, when, and why veterinarians develop their beliefs about breed differences in pain sensitivity. Veterinary professionals must be educated on physiologic and behavioral differences between dog breeds and how to best manage these unique but interrelated traits.

crossed my fingers, and off we went.

I compete in so many different sports that I had to develop an approach to training and competing and one that would fit into my budget.

Strategically I had a training and titling plan that included getting started in obedience before I ventured into agility.

First, however, I tackled the sports that I knew would be more suited for a younger dog.

My plan was to pursue tracking, conformation, and field titles first. As I chased those sports, I would intersperse the obedience and agility training. The hope was that by the time Field, Conformation and Tracking titles were completed, I’d have a good foundation for obedience and agility. Well, it almost worked.

In December of 2017, Evan completed her Field Championship in Troy, Missouri. Once maturity set in, she stopped splashing in the puddles (Kirbyville, Texas) and

I’m pretty silly in giving each of my dogs a nickname for a unique sing-song type recall word. I seek to have a fun word spoken with a positive tone. My philosophy is that a good energy recall “song” will heIp achieve a good response, especially in the field. I honestly have no idea where I ever got Evan-nuuuuuuu; no recollection of what inspired that. I just know that it’s unique and it works. Evan responds with joy and most often comes right away. My friends have nicknamed her “Nuuuuu”. She loves it!

So here we are in October of 2023 with a new Triple Champion: Conformation, Field, and now Agility. It’s been quite the journey. Every single one of my dachshunds taught me the lesson of patience and perseverance.

Evan has reinforced those lessons.

Born June of 2015, Evan was my pick long before her eyes even opened. In reality, I think SHE picked ME. She remained my pick throughout the stages of puppy development and eventual puppy evaluations.

There’s always been a connection that I simply can’t explain.

I had high hopes for this little girl. I set my goals on a Triple Championship, 12 Dachshund Club of America Winter 2023

February of 2023, that we achieved our first double Q. I just about cried.

Recap: 1st title in July of 2019.

Practially all of 2020 written off.

First QQ in February of 2023.

That’s a real long time in agility years!

So next up was agility.

Here’s where those old lessons of patience and perseverance resurface.

Evan earned her first agility title in July of 2019.

Her agility quest has been a struggle. Nothing brings out Evan’s personality more than an agility course. She

got serious at chasing down bunny smells.

Evan finished her Breed Championship and became a Dually in September of 2018 in Franklin, Tennessee. She enjoyed the Conformation ring, ya know, cuz there’s food!

Persistence. Evan had it. I had it.

Somehow, someway, something clicked and Evan “got it”.

A month later, in March 2023, she held it together to win high scoring dog in the regular 8˝ class for both Jumpers and Standard at DCA Nationals.

In the 8 months that followed, Evan earned the 20 QQs and 750 points (actually she earned over 1200 points) necessary to be crowned an Agility Champion. Evan is 8 years old!

In addition, in these 8 months, she qualified for the AKC Agility Nationals, the AKC Agility Invitational, and finished the invitational reporting period as the #3 dachshund in the USA. I love the spirit and spunk of this girl, but I adore her sweetness. She must always be at my side in the rocker-recliner when at home. She has a lovely “off switch”.

Evan’s lesson to me and thus my message to you: Never give up! Never!

Her love for tunnels seemed to supersede all things. She would literally cross a ring to take a tunnel NOT even in her path. We spent a year of silly antics with long dry spells between qualifying scores.

Just as Evan was making a wee bit of progress, along came the COVID-19 pandemic. Our training field closed and trials were cancelled. This was a major set back.

We resurfaced and started trialing again.

We had a new place to train. Unfortunately I still had a wild child. Somehow we eeked our way through to the Masters level of both Jumpers and Standard courses, but the struggle of the undisciplined wild child remained. I went nearly an entire year without a Q in standard. It wasn’t until

To the DCA Membership, I’d like to thank all members who returned their ballot on the DCA bylaws revisions. The DCA 2023 Bylaws Revisions vote results are published on page 41 of this newsletter with all revisions approved by the membership. The revised bylaws were reported to and ratified by the AKC Board Directors at their October 2023 meeting and are now in effect. The revised bylaws are available on the DCA website in the “About DCA” tab.

I’m pleased to report that this year the DCA Board took steps to enhance the value of your membership. As a result there are exciting things planned for next year and I’d like to take this opportunity to share some of them with you.

After several months of research, DCA recently signed a contract with a vendor for a new pedigree database program. It will be significantly different from the old one and promises to be a robust tool to assist breeders with their breeding programs. The Board received a demonstration of its functionality at the July 8th Board meeting and were very impressed with the amount of data that will be available.

Rollout is expected next spring. Debby Krieg and Emi Pedraza have spent many long hours to make this a reality so when you see them, be sure to extend your thanks.

A new feature coming in 2024 is an email communication tool the Board recently approved. DCA will begin using electronic marketing software which will allow for messages from the DCA Board and DCA committees to go directly to each DCA member’s email. This will enable the club to send informative, timely email messages between Newsletter editions. Members will have to agree to receive DCA’s email messaging and can opt-out at any time. Building the email database will begin early next year with implementation expected in late spring.

I want to close by assuring you that the Board is dedicated to responding to our members. We encourage your suggestions and feedback on what we can do to better to serve you. Members are always welcome to attend in-person Board meetings. Announcements of the date & location will be made for each meeting as soon as they are scheduled. falsely claiming that breeders are cruel or negligent “puppy mills”. A common tactic of those anti-breeder groups is to push for laws that prohibit pet retailers from selling purposebred pets by using inaccurate and emotionallycharged claims that pet breeders and pet stores routinely neglect pets. Typically, their “solution” would force retailers to offer only pets from rescues or shelters.

A better solution to ensuring the wellbeing of pets is strong, effective negligence and cruelty laws, effective regulation of commercial pet breeders and sellers, and consumer protection laws that hold pet sellers accountable. In this way, bad actors are held accountable while individuals and families can still have the opportunity to choose the right pet for their lifestyle.

Great pets can come from a variety of sources, including breeders, shelters, rescues, and retail pet stores. Those who choose a pet store want the confidence of knowing that the store and breeder are regulated and inspected, and that the dogs come with consumer protection and health guarantees. Laws that ban the sale of purpose-bred puppies effectively eliminate those benefits, thereby undermining the aforementioned consumer protection and responsible dog ownership practices. Moreover, because the health history of random-source dogs cannot be verified, such laws negatively impact the wellbeing of pets at the population level.

Animal extremists groups that oppose the purposeful breeding of dogs have long sought to unfairly tarnish the reputation of dog breeders and to shut down regulated professionals by

Policy Analysis

The numbers don’t add up.

Only 9 percent of pets obtained in the U.S. come from retail pet stores. Approximately 42 percent come from rescues, shelters, parking lot rescue events, etc.; with the remainder coming from a variety of other sources.[i] Banning an industry that accounts for only 4 percent of dog sales would not accomplish the proponents’ stated goals. A more efficient approach to improving animal welfare is to enforce reasonable negligence and cruelty laws to which all owners are subject.

Retail bans remove existing consumer protections specifically designed to protect against pet seller fraud and abuse.

Shelters and rescues are not regulated in the same way as breeders, and laws that offer

consumer guarantees, recourse, or protections do not apply when pet purchasers obtain a pet from shelters and rescues. For more information, read AKC’s Consumer Protection Policy Analysis on www.akc.org.

Retail bans promote inconsistent standards of care.

Retail sourcing restrictions create an artificial demand for dogs that are not subject to, and do not benefit from, federal animal welfare regulations or the health checks and reporting required of them. Ultimately, this harms U.S. pet owners and businesses.

Bans on U.S. breeders and pet sellers incentivize troublesome unregulated foreign puppy production.

Consumer demand for puppies in the U.S. is approximately eight million annually, based solely on the replacement rate of currentlyowned dogs. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately one million dogs are imported into the U.S. annually.[ii] The CDC has further noted that many of these dogs are being imported with invalid health certificates. A large portion of these dogs from unregulated sources are destined for distribution in retail/ rescue channels.

Retail bans on purpose-bred puppies create a loophole that allows for deceptive sourcing practices and incentivize production of pets overseas in countries that lack animal welfare laws.

This feeds the artificially-supported market for the pets from “rescue” or unknown/ unregulated sources – even as quality U.S. breeders are being pushed out of the marketplace.

Retail bans push buyers to online pet sellers and scams.

Purebred dogs are popular because they offer specific, predictable characteristics that enable future owners to both understand the needs and requirements of a pet throughout its lifetime and make a responsible choice in selecting a pet.

If purebred pet buyers cannot obtain the pet of their choice from local sources, this will push them to the internet, where they will not be able to meet the pet before purchasing it, and potentially to unscrupulous pet sellers and scammers.

ADDRESSING COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS These position statements are the exclusive expression of AKC’s public policy positions, and serve as the guiding principles for AKC’s positions on legislation. When implemented through the development and enactment of sound laws regarding pet sales, they protect the freedom of puppy buyers to choose the dog they want from the source they want, while imposing sourcing standards on pet stores and compliance standards on commercial breeders.

As separate entities, AKC-affiliated clubs are membership organizations comprised primarily of local or breed-specific dog hobby-level enthusiasts. Individual hobby clubs may impose rules and requirements that reflect the interests and values of their particular members, which should not be construed to be official AKC policy.

It is important that lawmakers understand and respect the difference between guidance for developing sound, reasonable, and fair laws versus private organizations’ guidelines for their members.

MODEL LEGISLATION Section 1 – Definitions.

“Animal control agency” means a municipal or county animal control office, or a state, county, or municipal law enforcement agency, that collects, impounds, or keeps stray, homeless, abandoned, or unwanted animals.

“Animal rescue organization” means a nonprofit private organization that is exempt from taxation under Section 501(a), Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as an organization described by Section 501(c) (3) of that code, that accepts homeless or unwanted dogs or cats with the purpose of finding permanent homes for the dogs or cats, and that does not obtain dogs or cats from a breeder or animal seller for compensation.

“Animal shelter” means a facility that collects, impounds, or keeps stray, homeless, abandoned, or unwanted dogs or cats.

“Qualified breeder or broker” means a professional dog or cat breeder as licensed by the state or A dog or cat breeder or broker licensed by the USDA or exempt from USDA licensing per USDA Animal Welfare Act and regulations, and in possession of all other licenses required for a breeder or broker by the state in which the

breeder or broker is located and who has not received: A direct or critical violation of the Animal Welfare Act from the USDA within the past two years; An indirect no access violation on each of the two most recent inspection reports issued by USDA; Three or more indirect or non-critical violations, provided such violations pertained to the health and welfare of an animal and were not administrative in nature. The indirect violations described in this paragraph do not include a violation described in paragraph 2 of this subsection; Any violations on a state inspection report related to the health and welfare of the animal from the breeder or broker’s state of origin within the past two years, if applicable.

“Pet store” means a for-profit retail business that sells dogs or cats to the public as pets. The term does not include an individual who sells, gives, or otherwise transfers dogs or cats raised, bred, or both by the individual.

A pet store shall maintain a record documenting from which animal control agency, animal shelter, animal rescue organization, or qualified breeder or broker the pet store obtained each dog or cat in the possession of the pet store for not less than one year following the date the pet store takes possession of the dog or cat.

A pet store shall make the records maintained under this section reasonably available for inspection by an animal control agency, animal shelter, animal rescue organization, or licensed qualified breeder or broker from which the pet

Section 4 – Public Posting.

A pet store shall post in a conspicuous location affixed to the enclosure of each dog or cat available for sale the name of the animal control agency, animal shelter, animal rescue organization, or qualified breeder or broker from which the pet store obtained the dog or cat.

Section 5 – Civil Penalty.

A pet store that violates Section 2 is liable to this state for a civil penalty in an amount not to exceed $500 for each dog or cat sold in violation of that section. The attorney general may bring an action to collect the civil penalty imposed under this section.

Section 6 – Application of Law. The change in law made by this Act applies only to a dog or cat obtained by a pet store on or after the effective date of this Act. A dog or cat

obtained by a pet store before the effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect on the date the dog or cat was obtained, and the former law is continued in effect for that purpose.

I’ve been looking over the past articles I have had the pleasure to write for DCA magazine. Some have featured our large events (Nationals, NOC, Classic), and some have given training advice on the topics of puppies, oops moments in the ring, and judge pressure (just to name a few).One underlying feature of all training and showing is the feedback we give our dogs. Based on how we train with our feedback, we will have a dog who is engaged and raring to go, or we can have a dog who checks out and leaves the heeling to you. Let’s take a closer look at this!

Let’s pretend I am teaching you how to bowl.

I stand just far enough away from you so that you can swing your arm without hitting me with the ball, but close enough to you to say “good good good good good good good good good good good.” That’s all I say. If I continue this, you are going to think two things: (1) I am

really bad so she has to keep telling me I am good, and (2) I think I’ll just ignore her now. I can do the same thing with the word bad. There is no information given, and I become extremely annoying.

Now, let’s think about our dogs. If I say good nonstop, the dog is not getting any useful information and will tune me out. Let me share an example. A few years ago I gave a seminar and a woman was taking her Boxer through the rally course. She was talking nonstop to this dog, who literally tuned her out and was plodding. I called her back to the start sign and I gave her a challenge: No talking until the 5th sign.

She was horrified that her dog would do nothing, but she said okay. Off she went. That dog was with her and waiting, just waiting, for a magic word. At the 5th sign she said good and that dog was the happiest Boxer ever. Too much, tune out. Less is good.

Another example: I teach my dogs that when I say “get close”, they come to heel position. I can say yes (or good – choose your favorite word) and if we are in training, we can have a party.

In the ring, I say get close and can look at my dog with a big smile on my face. And when the judge immediately says, “Are you ready?”, I respond with yes. The yes I said in practice (with a treat and then without a treat) becomes the verbal reward in the ring. When I have this, and the yes brings the head up, I have a dog that is ready to be a true team-mate.

The key to feedback is understanding what type of feedback you are giving your dog and the timing of it. I will now review different types of consequences before discussing timing.

Increasing or Decreasing Behavior The goal of giving reinforcement is for a behavior to continue. In order to do this, we can either give something that our dogs really like (food, toy, praise), or we can remove something our dog does not like (pressure during training).

A human example. Think back to your childhood.

Did your parents give you a reward for bringing home good grades? They did so in the hopes that you would continue to earn good grades. This is also called positive reinforcement. Your parents could have also rewarded you by taking away a chore you hated when you brought home good grades. By not making you clean up the dog poop for a week, they hoped that you would continue to bring home good grades so you could avoid that smelly chore. This is also called negative reinforcement. Do not be fooled by the

term “negative”, as it just refers to removing something you (or the dog) does not like. Bottom line, if we want a behavior to continue, we can use reinforcement. The key: What you give your dog must be seen as a reward. If your dog hates toys, don’t try to reward with a toy.

Sometimes our dogs will do a behavior we do not want to continue. When this happens, the goal of the consequence used is to reduce the unwanted behavior. When Zelda was learning how to heel, she would sometimes put her nose down to sniff. I would tap my left toe on the ground next to her nose. She hated that!

Because she hated having my toe tapping near her nose, this was something I could use as a consequence. In textbooks this is called punishment. I want to emphasize that when people see the word punishment they think of spanking kids, etc. Punishment is anything not liked. Looking at the human example above, if the teenager broke curfew, the punishment could be cleaning the house. We can also take away something the dog likes if the behavior is unwanted. If a dog is not listening, you can stop the lesson, and put the dog in a crate (or on a bed if the dog knows to stay). This is particularly effective if you have another dog you can train when you do this. This is also called omission training (some books call it negative punishment). The human example would be if you broke curfew and your car keys were taken away for a week.

What do we know about rewards and punishments? We want to be able to reward. A consequence works best if it is done at a low rate. And this is probably the most important line in this article: Puppies and dogs who are learning a new skill should only be rewarded.

Be fair to the dog. If the dog does not know a skill, there is no reason to ever use a consequence. Teach the skill.

Timing Years ago (oh goodness, I sound like a dinosaur) when out of sight stays were still in obedience, some dogs would break the sit and go down, some would sit up on the down, and some would stand and look around for 3-5 minutes. I would see people take the dog out of the ring after stays were over, and then go outside and put the dog in the position they broke. By that time, the dog has no idea what they are being corrected for, as too much time has passed. So what do we do?

When training, give that feedback when the behavior happens. If I am working on the change of pace from normal to fast, and my dog hits the fast with me, I reward. It could be a treat, it could be a verbal “yes!”, it could be a smile or a dance. But my dog knows she was correct. As she learns the skill and becomes better at it, I can say yes or give the treat and keep heeling (not always easy to do when bending that low).

At some point I can say yes, toss a treat with “okay get it” while I keep heeling. The dog knows to come back to heel and be with me for the possibility of more praise. Once the dog has learned the skill, we can go longer before giving praise. Let’s think about healing again. I have

worked on straight line heeling, I have worked change of paces and turns and now I can heel longer. With each lengthening, the dog receives praise or a treat/toy at different parts of the heeling pattern, until we get to the time when we can achieve an entire heeling pattern with just praise at the end. This is what we can do at a show.

Consequences are similar. If the dog is learning the exercise, no consequence. But what about something learned? I can use the word “no!” We all have words we use that the dogs understand the behavior is not correct. The dog learns that no means they did not do the skill correctly. In the ring, you can do a few things that are legal. When sheltie Liza would walk the broad jump, I turned and told her to heel to the next exercise. She knew that meant she was wrong. The key is using that in training if the dog is wrong so the dog learns that mean oops.

Key point #2: If the dog keeps getting the skill wrong, assume the dog does not know the skill and reteach with rewards.

Fading The hardest part of training is understanding when to fade the rewards. If your dog can do

the skill, you don’t have to give the reward every time. When Zelda was learning how to front, at first the treat was for every front.

Then I changed to a variable reinforcement schedule. What the heck does that mean? If we practiced 5 fronts, some days she might get her reward after the 2nd and 5th front, other days after the 5th, other days after all of them. She never knew when the reward was coming. And this is so important. Until your dog can do the exercises without a reward, the dog is not ready for the ring.

Final Thoughts When you train, take your dog to different locations. Dogs can do perfect fronts at home, but can the dog do a perfect front in a store? On a sidewalk? That is the test. Every new location is new to the dog, so more reinforcement until they understand where they are at. Soon they will be able to perform at many locations without much repetition at all.

Have fun training. Bring that fun into the ring with you. By using rewards and consequences correctly, you will have a motivated dog who wants to work with you! !

A

friend who lives beside a lake had been seeing a flightless Turkey Vulture in her yard for three days, on and off. The bird’s left wing drooped and it could not fly. It seemed to disappear for part of the day, then appear near her house. She gave it some sliced turkey from the deli, which it ate, then disappeared again. She told me about the bird and I offered to help her catch it. There is a bird rescue organization in the northern part of the state. A volunteer would take the bird to the rehab center if we’d catch it.

I joined the woman in walking her property, and the adjacent peach orchard, but we couldn’t find the poor bird. I went home and later her husband saw the bird briefly. They left more meat out for it and the next day it appeared and ate the meat. It was frustrating because the bird was probably very hungry by now. It could go down to the lake to drink but it needed more than a few slices of turkey to survive. Also, there is a local fox population which would take advantage of an injured bird.

I decided to try one of my miniature longhaired dachshunds in hopes she might find the bird. Shay is not quite two years old but she is a very dedicated rabbit hunter. She hits the brush and spends plenty of time searching even the tightest, toughest cover. I was sure she could locate and bay the Turkey Vulture. These birds are at home in the briars because they are ground nesters and hide their nests deep inside greenbriar thickets. However, my concern was that, being a dog used for falconry, Shay has been trained to stay clear of the hawk and not go near it, especially when it has caught a rabbit. I thought perhaps she would not bark at the vulture when she found it but would go around it and keep looking for a rabbit.

I took her to my friend’s yard and encouraged Shay to ‘find it’.

She was already on her way into the briars and she kept going. She went in and out a few times then seemed to scent something at one end of the briar patch. She came out to me once or twice and jumped on my leg, as if to say there was something in there but she wasn’t supposed to bother it. I encouraged her and she went back in and began a soft woofing. At least we knew we had found the bird.

I went to the car and got on my chaps, and took out the loppers. I cut my way into the greenbriar and sweet pepper bush stems that grew thickly inside the briars. Shay was ahead of me and began to bark in earnest. She found a spot under some fallen logs where there was a body imprint in the leaves and where there was bird feces. As I encouraged her she became more animated so I knew the vulture was close by. It’s amazing how a bird that big can sit tight and not be visible. Pretty soon I spotted its red head through the leaves on the

Vulture Rodeo continued from page 26 other side of the log. It began hissing at Shay so she backed up a bit but kept up a soft barking.

I tried for a few photos of the bird but it took off toward the lake, Shay after it. The bird actually ran up a leaning tree and took a perch about six feet up the trunk, over the water.

Shay was confused when she couldn’t find her quarry but soon she smelled the tree trunk and looked up to the see the vulture. Good dog.

Well, the bird had enough of us and jumped into the lake. The water was very shallow and there was a submerged log right where the bird landed. It took a perch in about eight inches of water and glared at Shay and me. It spread its wings to look bigger and, like any vulture which is frightened, it began vomiting the meat it had eaten.

I asked my friend to go to my car and get my beating stick. My idea was to push down on the bird’s back so I could get my hands on it.

Vultures bite but with its head down I could grab a wing. My friend came back not only with my beating stick but with a cowboy’s lariat used for roping! The rope was old and very stiff but it had a big loop already in it. I eased the wide loop over the vulture’s wings and gently pulled it toward me. It stumbled into the water right near me so I simply took hold of one wing and pulled it up to the bushes. It fought me, of course, so I quickly took hold of both legs and then its neck right below its head. It couldn’t bite me but it could continue to bring up slimy ropes of half digested meat. Lovely.

Shay and I pushed our way out of the cover and my friend got some photos. I put the bird in a dog crate in my car. I did wild bird rehab for

many years so I knew to feel for damage to the wing. I couldn’t feel any broken bones but there was too much play in one joint. Later that day a volunteer took the vulture to a rehab center.

I was glad Shay had not been aggressive with the bird and that she respected it enough to keep back from it. I’m sure using the dachshund to find the bird helped save its life. !

The Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody is expected to begin shipping in the summer of 2023, pending individual state approvals.

In the treatment efficacy study, the Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody was proven effective in decreasing mortality associated with parvovirus infection.3 Treated dogs also had significantly faster times to resolution of the mostadverse effects of parvovirus including vomiting4, meaning that they feel better faster and get home sooner.

I hear about them, and often work with them, as they struggle to get their dog’s training to a place where it can accompany them to school or work. They even contemplate giving up, saying it’s too tough of a task and they aren’t skilled enough as a trainer. But every single time after months of guided hard work, I meet them again and their dog’s journey, of which we never doubted the success of, has transformed their character into truly confident, tough, and determined individuals. This whole journey actually had little to do with the dog’s ability but everything to do with the handler’s growth! Unknowingly, their dog just developed their character.

Let Your Dog Develop Your Child’s Character (And Maybe Even Your Own)...

There is an expression in the horse world, “Green on green makes black and blue,” Where green refers to the inexperience of an animal or handler while black and blue refers to the many bruises one would sustain from falling (also known as learning, wink wink).

Usually, people look at this saying and are deterred from ‘going green’...but that’s the secret!

At some point, anyone starting in this sport is going to reach a point where they can choose between exponential growth and stagnancy.

Growth, of course, can only be obtained by gaining experience with dogs of all backgrounds, trainability, nerve strength, and experience.

Now, I’m not saying to let yourself or your child walk in with a Romanian Malinois import out of working protection lines as one of your first dogs. Be safe and practical first!

But I am saying that after the first few times in the ring with a highly responsive ‘push-button’ dog, a junior becomes handicapped. It’s natural to get into a rhythm with a dog you’re showing and it’s also normal, as a result, to have a rough time switching between dogs especially if someone doesn’t do it often. We all, at some point, want to become specialized but the best handlers are universally adaptable.

It really doesn’t matter if it’s inside the ring or not. Dogs naturally frustrate us and challenge us to become better behaviorists, trainers, and people everywhere. I believe for every lesson we think we’re teaching a dog, we learn two. As one of my best examples, a great deal of people, many of which are quiet, anxious, or reserved,

So imagine…it all starts with a dog and a person. If you’re reading this column as a junior handler, remember to first always keep yourself safe. But challenge yourself to be frustrated and work with dogs that will elevate your ability as a handler and shape your character for the better.

Dogs work for integrity and honesty every day of the week… but so do people! Let these dogs teach you how to become a person of worth and I promise they will never misguide you.

Benny is a sweet, gentle loving dog. He enjoys every venue we try. Bennie is also field pointed, and working towards his Field Championship.

I have never had a dog in 40+ years being in Dachshunds title 2 times in one weekend. He earned his Novice Earth Dog, and his Junior Earth Dog in one September weekend.

T

his article is a chronicle of the journey taken by a group of people to establish a new AKC Dachshund Club. The journey begins with the discussion of an idea and culminates with the successful running of an inaugural four-day field trial weekend.

The concept of a new performance Dachshund Club was first introduced in the fall of 2022. The club was to be established to offer Dachshund Field Trials and would be based at the TriCounty Beagle Club in Carrolltown, Pennsylvania.

An initial group of people with experience in Beagle and Dachshund field trials were invited to become the foundation officers and membership. Despite being based as a Pennsylvania club, the group included members from across the country who brought a diversity of experiences and skills.

Work began in earnest in the spring of 2023. Keystone relied on the publication “How to Form an AKC® Accredited Dog Club” as a template to guide them in completing all the required steps and tasks. An initial membership roster including officers and a Constitution/By-Laws document was submitted to AKC. Approval to hold a mentored trial was awarded in late summer.

The search for an appropriate date to hold four trials began. Keystone was particularly mindful of not attempting to schedule events that would conflict with another club’s dates/trials regardless of whether another event was well outside the mileage parameters established by AKC. We were particularly grateful to Hoosier Dachshund Club for relinquishing their November

dates to Keystone and after obtaining DCA and AKC approval, we were able to schedule our first mentored trials on November 9th-12th at TriCounty Beagle Club in Carrolltown, Pennsylvania.

While there were the usual tasks of selecting a chairman, event secretary, event committee, creating a premium list, ordering ribbons/prizes/DCA awards and hiring judges, Keystone also had many additional responsibilities to address as a new club including establishing a bank account, PayPal account, an AKC Event Management account and purchasing secretarial and miscellaneous supplies. We take many things for granted when we hold a trial as an established club, but it is an entirely different game as a brand-new club.

The trials were well attended and included an AKC Field Trial representative and exhibitors

and judges who came from long distances. We had been especially concerned about holding trials at such a late date with very limited daylight hours and took steps to optimize the time available to run consecutive classes. We began roll-call at 7AM, used only call names at rollcall, ran combined field champion classes, and used a dry erase “brain board” that was

completed for the day’s events prior to rollcall.

The board contained the day’s date, event number, times for sunrise and sunset, the running order with the judges, field marshals, starting times and location of

We had a total of 253 entries over the four days and every trial was able to be completed well before sunset.

The combined field champion classes were extremely competitive, and it was nice to see placements spread out among several dogs over those four days.

In addition to the trials, events were planned each evening including a complimentary chili dinner (prepared with delicious bear meat), a pizza party compliments of Dave Kerr and a bonfire, a Thanksgiving turkey dinner prepared by the cooks of Tri-County, a huge raffle and auction that included some high-ticket items and dog food, and an extremely popular “Show Me the Bunny” auction. The latter auction allowed exhibitors to bid on time for training sessions in the Tri-County puppy pen.

Exhibitors who made use of these opportunities were extremely pleased with the

Kathy Judging positive impact it had on their young or inexperienced dogs. The raffle and merchandise auction yielded a whopping $975.00 for Keystone and a 50/50 raffle provided an admirable $68.50 each for Keystone and Tri-County.

The overall tone of these trials was light-hearted and enthusiastic. People volunteered to marshal, hold dogs, chase dogs, beat brush, empty garbage, and keep the clubhouse tidy. One exhibitor brought her young son and son’s friend. These two kept the entire field entertained with their antics and with their outstanding work ethic. Mom and boys are welcome back any time.

It took a small city to complete this journey.

We were assured by the AKC Representative that Keystone would receive a very favorable report and would soon achieve licensed status.

Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the trial chairmen, event secretaries, event committee members, judges, marshals, cooks, raffle organizer, Tri-County Beagle club and every exhibitor who came from near and far to run dogs and support Keystone DC. You are the best community in all of Dachshund events and activities and no club could be successful without your participation, enthusiasm, and energy.

Pending DCA and AKC approval, Keystone will be holding trials with Laurel Highlands DC on June 6th-9th, 2024 at Tri-County and alone on September 5th-8th, 2024 also at Tri-County.

Covers: The qualification for a DCA Newsletter cover shall include a dog that achieves an AKC Triple Championship OR becomes a 7-Way titled dog. The 7-Way titled dog is defined as achieving the following: (1) Mandatory – Bench Championship, Field Championship and titles in Earth Dog, Obedience, and/or Agility and (2) Two of the following: Titles in Rally, Trick Dog, Scent Work, Tracking and/or CAT.

VC Ads: DCA Member dogs are entitled to a complementary one color ad in the Newsletter.

The Madison Area Dachshund Club will host the Dachshund Club of America 2024 National Field Trial April 20-21, at the Northern Illinois Brace Club in Roscoe, Illinois (pending AKC approval).

Stakes will be run consecutively over the two days, with Open Bitches and FC Bitches likely running on Saturday, followed by Open Dogs and FC Dogs on Sunday.

Michael Nothstein and Stacey Sullivan have accepted the assignments to judge the FC Dog and FC Bitch stakes, and Wendy Snyder and Val Higginbotham have accepted the assignments to judge the Open Dog and Open Bitch stakes.

The Madison Area Dachshund Club will host two trials over three days April 22-24.

It is anticipated that two trials over three days will allow stakes to be run consecutively.

MADC is in the process of inviting judges for their trials.

At this time, it is anticipated that the annual awards dinner will be held on Sunday, April 21 at the club grounds.
