TIWI 1.0 C A N Y O N I N G A N D C U LT U R E Explore the most beautiful canyon in Oman and feel the thrill of adventure.

This is an entry-level activity with lots of swimming, exploring the local culture and adrenaline-filled abseils.

Unlike other canyons, this wadi is full of greenery, with the terraced palm tree gardens stretched along the edges of the canyon, right over the bizarre calcite formations you can spot along the way.

The water in Wadi Tiwi is something special, thanks to the pale limestone rock, it’s clear waters turn sky-blue, an out of this world view. Jump in the deep pools of the wadi and abseil off an active waterfall, as we make our way down towards the village of Tiwi.

We enjoy a filling lunch at a local restaurant in the village and make our way to the last stop of the day – Bimmah Sinkhole.

S H A M S V I A F E R R ATA C L I M B I N G & C U LT U R E This is a world-class experience on top of the highest mountain in the region, Jebel Shams.

Climb the top 200m cliffs of a 2,000m high mountain like a pro, without any previous experience. This is what the Via Ferrata is all about.

Our adventure commences with a hike along the edge of the canyon, the famous Balcony Walk, to the recently abandoned village of Sap Bani Khamis. See what the local lifestyle was there, just a mere 70 years ago and learn about Oman’s history and geology.

There are a lot of stunning photo opportunities, overlooking an exposed edge of the canyon.

Continue climbing up the scree to the start of the villagers’ old sticks stairway, now the Via Ferrata. The route is protected with a steel cable that reaches all the way up the 200m cliffs, providing assisted climbing for the adventurer with little experience. With the 2,000m deep canyon just over your shoulder, the views are exceptional and a head for heights is most definitely required.

Enjoy a picnic lunch up on the plateau before we head back to Muscat.

WADI SHAB A Q U AT I C H I K E One of the most popular canyons in Oman and the most accessible one.

A large turquoise pool and lush greenery greet us at the start. We take a small boat to the other bank where the famous Wadi Shab trek starts. This easy hike will take us all along the canyon’s water pools and tall golden walls.

As we hike, explore some sections of the ancient irrigation system “falaj”, learn about local lifestyle and the challenges the mountain villages face on a daily basis. At the end of the trek, if the water level allows, we dive into the pool and swim through a narrow tunnel into a small cave with a waterfall, the scenes inside are fantastic. Our way back is the reverse route with more stunning views ahead.

We enjoy a filling lunch at a local restaurant in the village and make our way to the last stop of the day – Bimmah Sinkhole.

This sinkhole is quite a spectacle with golden colour rock framing a bold turquoise pool. Brackish water in the Sinkhole is what gives it its colour. We hike down for a swim and head back to Muscat.

This half-day experience is a perfect way to experience Jebel Shams and get some adrenaline going for the less adventurous ones.

The activity will take around 2-3 hours, so we would suggest it to the guests staying near-by. If you are coming from Muscat, consider booking the Via Ferrata or Balcony Walk.

Enjoy spectacular views of the Jebel Shams from the very heart of the canyon. A short hike gets us to the cliff, which we will abseil off to get to a small lake, hidden in between the boulders.

The abseil is big enough to give you the thrill, yet short enough to be suitable for beginners and children.

We take some epic photos and rest in the shade before starting our climb up clipped on to a Via Ferrata cable.

We enjoy a picnic lunch and head back to Muscat.

HOTI SINK I N T R O T O C AV I N G Explore one of the local cave systems on this entry-level caving expedition, no previous experience required.

This is an awesome adventure into the pitch-black underground cave system of

A short hike down the wadi and a 6m abseil later, we are at the bottom, standing next to a dark hole in the ground, natural entrance into the cave. A 10-meter roped abseil gets you down into total darkness, like very few other places on earth.

The cave has never been touched and offers us a fantastic natural section to explore. We start expedition through the cave's enormous chambers and narrow passages, scaling huge boulders finding and columns of calcite that dwarf the few spectators who come to visit. Learn about the geological history of Oman, how the caves formed and about the wildlife that manages to survive in the dark and humid chambers.

Our exit route is a caving ladder that we climb, connected to the belay system. Once that is out of the way, we will be out in the daylight in no time. We climb out of the wadi and head to the cars for a well-deserved lunch.

BALCONY WALK TREKKING With a panoramic view of Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon’, this is an incredible adventure for all.

The hike is a slight challenge, but the views are breathtaking. We follow the old route around the inside of Oman's own Grand Canyon towards the recently abandoned village of Sap Bani Khamis. Above the village is a spring-fed lake where we can have a refreshing dip if you wish, or just sit in the shade provided by the cave behind and enjoy the views over lunch.

The route back is the reverse route so now we get those spectacular views from another angle. The gentle descent we enjoyed in the morning makes us work a little harder on the way back.

As we descend into the Wadi Bani Habib, enjoy a unique bird's eye view of Jebel Akhadr’s lush farms and gardens. Get an up-close look at the walnut trees, learn about the ancient irrigation system 'Falaj', as we walk into the farms and through the valley.

Don’t relax just yet! We have got to climb 205 stairs to reach the end of the trail, where the cars will be waiting for us. Sometimes, there is a small pop-up produce stall where you can buy local pomegranates and honey.

H AW I R FA L L S CANYONING This is a long but exciting trip, swimming in turquoise pools of the less travelled Hawir section of Wadi Bani Khalid. Away from touristic pools, this canyon is a great adventure for everyone who enjoys water fun.

We scramble down the valley of boulders and hike along the local ‘Fala’j, series of canals that help irrigate local farms and crops, until we reach the first stunning pools.

Beautiful turquoise water, long swims, impressive jumps and plenty of good route finding, make this canyon a great adventure. The canyon boasts an impressive waterfall with great jumping points from the timid meter high to the really big stuff.

As the pools get smaller, there is another 1 hour of trekking ahead of us to get out of the canyon to meet the cars.

After a short practice on the ground and a refresher on how to use the descender, we gear up, man up and take a leap off the edge.

The first abseil is a shorter 35m and acts as a warm-up for what’s coming next. Take a peek down, on a sheer rock face and kilometres of empty space beyond, as you step off the edge and make a 150-meter controlled descent on to the lower ledges. This abseil is so big it’s hard to take it in. It takes some mental toughness to not lose your cool here.

This is still just the beginning though, once down we have the next task ahead, and that’s to get back up. We follow the Via Ferrata route all the way up to reach our starting point.

SEVENTH HOLE C AV I N G E X P E R I E N C E Explore the section of one of the largest cave networks in Oman.

After 9 hours of training in Muscat over 2 days, we drive to Selmah Plateau for an overnight camp.

At the sunrise, we start the trip with the leap of faith as you lean back into the darkness of the cave. The first abseil is good 120m and gets your right into the middle of the Canyon Room. The adrenaline here is through the roof!

The light play on the walls is stunning and as you lower yourself down you can appreciate more and more the intricacy of the cave’s formation. This vast chamber is lit through the multiple holes in the ceiling, making it look even more dramatic. This is the place to take some amazing photographs.

Once everyone is down we progress into a pitch-black fossil passage that brings us to the second descent of 40m.

We then start our 80m climb out of the cave. Using all the techniques we have learned in the training and passing series of re-belays we accomplish our first 40m pitch and move higher. Another 30m and a few scrambles get us out into the light at the bottom of the wadi, a short hike from our cars.
