Welcome to our latest Gazette and news of our inaugural auction in The Waveney Room! This light, airy, purpose-built space has been many years in the planning and what better way to launch it than with Modern Design one of our flagship special sales? For many years James Bassam, our renowned specialist in 20th and 21st Century art and design, has compiled some wonderful headlining Modern Design auctions in surroundings which, whilst characterful and perfect for other designated sales, have not been ideal for his purpose. The ambiance was not appropriate for the subject, the space far too small and restricted. Now we are proud to share our new facility which will be the ideal showcase for some very worthy auctions and events, long into the future. These will complement our ongoing regular weekly auctions, which will continue to grow and develop. Please refer to our auction calendar www.twgaze.co.uk for details. The opening ofThe Waveney Room is phase one of the current building project. Over the summer and autumn, stage two, the completion of a new Reception and offices will be followed by stage three, the fitting out of our new refreshments facility, CafĂŠ 1857, adjacent to The Waveney Room. Our intention is to continue to enhance the TW Gaze Auction Experience and we hope you will continue to enjoy it with us. ElizabethTalbot

The GoGoHares trail is hare! As if by magic overnight on Saturday 23 June the City of Norwich was overrun by hares. Norfolk children’s charity Break, in partnership with Wild in Art, has arranged a very special set of trails to celebrate turning 50. After the incredible success of the Gorillas in 2013 and Dragons in 2015, this year’s sculpture trail features the hare; a creature found around the Norfolk countryside, quietly going about its business, just like Break.

county. Locations include the Broads, Great Yarmouth, Dereham, Cromer, Holt,Aylsham, Hemsby, Harleston, Fakenham, North Walsham,Wroxham and Wymondham. (illustrated)

With trail maps and apps available many of you may have already started your route around the city, but this summer there is an extra dimension with a county hare trail. There are 50 ears up sculptures, mostly located within the city walls of Norwich, but an additional 18 – to represent 2018 – are of moongazer design and are placed around the

Moon Gaze-ing in Wymondham

The trail will run through to Saturday 8 September, with a last chance to see all the large sculptures called Hare Today Gone Tomorrow on 7 – 10 October, after which 50 sculptures will be auctioned off on 11 October, raising valuable funds for Norfolk children’s charity Break. And we are delighted to confirm that after succesfully conducting all the major recent art trail auctions in the city including GoGo Elephants for the Born Free Foundation, we at TW Gaze have again teamed up with our friends at Break to conduct the auction. Directors of the firm Mike Sarson (we can’t keep him away) and Elizabeth Talbot will take to the stage on what is sure to be a real Autumnal highlight. For more information on the trail and the charity visit: www.gogohares.co.uk and follow @GoGoHares2018 on Facebook,Twitter and Instagram. #GGH18 Team GoGo Gaze. Auctioneers by TW Gaze Professionalism by Mike Sarson, Ears by Elizabeth Talbot, and Photobombing by Andre Ling! It’s no wonder they wanted us back!

Thursday 23 August Our inaugural auction of railwayana in January was such a success, we’re back with more! The first sale, comprised solely of the Peter Punchard Collection, was a sell-out success. The second sale contains several smaller collections and private vendor consignments and already promises to provide a feast of interest for railway enthusiasts. Daniel Woods, TW Gaze’s own railwayana specialist and qualified steam engine driver, speaks very enthusiastically about the entries already received: “There is a good selection of lamps included again this time. However, on this occasion, they are mainly exterior lamps, including tail lamps, head lamps and hand lamps, plus a London Underground fog lamp; and the condition many of them are in is as good as you could hope to find. There are some named examples, the local ones including Tivetshall and Norwich Thorpe”.

Aside from lamps there are signal levers, line maps, pressure gauges (including one from London Transport), German smoke box numbers and ticket stubs (including LNER and M&GN Jt Railway) for journeys including North Walsham/ Norwich Thorpe, Spooner Row and Norwich/Cromer. Early railways are represented by rail chairs (including a GER one dated 1869) and a Bradshaw’s Railway Manual, 1865 edition.

Entries are still being accepted. If you would like to consign items in August or would like a valuation prior to the next Railwayana auction, please contact Daniel Woods on 01379 650306 or d.woods@twgaze.co.uk.

Bygones – Heritage at our Fingertips By Elizabeth Talbot I have had the honour of being guest opener twice in the first six months of 2018: two speeches delivered and two ribbons cut. The first, in March, was as Diss Museum opened its doors for this year; the second, in June, was for the inaugural East Coast Heritage Event Weekend in Lowestoft. The shared theme on both occasions was heritage, and it gave me great pleasure to be

e.talbot@twgaze.co.uk

able to spotlight the importance of cherishing what we inherit – it is a bridge between the past, the present and the future - as such, heritage is living history (be that, for example, in the form of crafts and customs, trades and traditions, songs and stories, names and dialects) and we are its custodians.

I am not a lone voice with this passion and hence the perpetual popularity of our Bygones sales. Held five times a year, these special sales have been staple in our auction calendar for over two decades and they never disappoint. Full of evidence of ways of life once lived, they present a treasure trove of tangible heritage.Tools of trade, agricultural implements, craftsmen’s curiosities, shopkeepers’ accessories, advertising articles; our colourful past placed at our fingertips in an exciting, engaging, absorbing way.

If you have any bygones to part with, TW Gaze is able to market them to our vast database of buyers and collectors. If you are thinking of consigning to auction, specialist valuer and auctioneer, Robert Kinsella, would be pleased to advise you. Enquiries to 01379 650306 or r.kinsella@twgaze.co.uk If you are interested in buying bygones, the next sale will be on Saturday 21 July. Viewing Thursday 19 July 2pm– 8pm, Friday 20 July 10am–6pm and on morning of the sale from 8.30am. Sale starts at 10am.

The addition of another saleroom will allow for a few changes around the site. The first sale to benefit will be Modern & Collectable Toys. A popular feature of our Saleroom 3 calendar it will remain under the wing of room manager Rupert Willows and our Toy valuer Robert Kinsella, but will move to a dedicated saleroom providing more space and time to view the lots.

Modern & Collectable Toys Friday 6 July at 1pm in Saleroom 1. Entries accepted up until Saturday 30 June.

Building a Sale If you were to go back 20 years there was a TW Gaze Saturday sale staple by the name of Toys and Nostalgia. It catered for toys from the reign of Queen Victoria through to the end of World War II. Had you turned up with a box of Lego for this sale you would have been polietly redirected to Saleroom 3. Lego was “far too modern” and shunned by buyer’s because it was still a legitimate current toy liable to be played with. So toy collectors gave it a widish birth,

not convinced that it could replace Meccano as the construction set that would endure. However as time has passed Lego has gone from strength to strength and now has a 60 year history. One of its primary attractions is the ability for pieces constructed in 1958 to still fit with the modern day versions. This means that assorted boxes can largely be sold by weight value as any purchaser knows they can build their own Lego mountain that little bit higher. Endless possibility also draws the active mind; just six of the eight-studded Lego bricks can be put together an amazing 915,103,765 different ways (something to challenge the kids with in the summer holidays!)

Allegiance with some of the major film franchises has helped maintain popularity and the focus on the Lego minifigures range has injected personality into the product. One of the rarest mini figures is Boba Fett from the Star Wars Cloud City set.An original changes hands for around £275. There are also gold plated versions of C-3PO out there which could be worth more than £10,000. Over the years our version of the toy sale has been deconstructed and reconstructed around the demands of the auction calendar and we look forward to showcasing this latest version on Firday 6 July. There is bound to be some Lego in the sale and we look forward to building it with you.

Guitars take Centre Stage Edward Taxil-Webber is counting in the next Musical Instruments sale (3/4 time)… 1)…to be held on Friday 27 July 2) …lots are currently being accepted

3) …please contact Ed on 01379 650306

or e.taxil-webber@twgaze.co.uk

The Musical Instruments sale is designed to accommodate all instruments for making music, including percussion, string and wind. However, already consigned are two major private collections of guitars, spanning 1930’s to present day instruments. It is noticeable how popular guitars continue to be; whether that popularity is driven by musical preference, cultural influence, investment opportunity or fashion it is hard to be certain, but the cumulative effect is ensuring guitars stay firmly in the spotlight of a favourable market. Ed notes “Unlike most other instruments, guitars provide instant musical gratification, even to the most modest of budding musicians for whom the merest strum suggests promise of a sell-out gig at Wembley. Guitars can be enjoyed quietly and privately or in the fellowship of others in a band; they are perfect for modern small-space living and are very portable.” “Some highlights include a 1970’s Fender Telecaster, a Gibson Cromwell acoustic and a Gibson SG double neck Hotel California special, one of only 100 ever made. It comes with all documentation and its original case.” Whether it is the “Ed Sheeran phenomenon”, boundary-pushing Muse or the influence of vintage greats which gives you a buzz equivalent to static feedback, fret not, there should be a lot to interest you during viewing on Thursday 26 2–8pm and on the morning of the sale from 8.30am.
