Modern Design The last Modern Design sale of 2017 is here already and we would like to thank all those who have supported the sales this year both sellers and buyers alike. What could potentially be the last sale held in Saleroom One before moving to the new room for next year see’s another colourful selection. There is some great furniture this time ranging from the beautiful Brazilian Rosewood dining chairs from the Danish firm of JL Moller from the 1960’s, they surround a teak drop leaf dining table by Kurt Ostervig of the same period. G-Plan designs of Ib Kofod Larsen include a fantastic side cabinet, dining table and chairs. Charlotte Perriand set of four Arc chairs and later designs for Ligne Roset include the striking ‘Ploum’ sofa. Highlights of the ceramics section has to be the rare Troika ‘Mask’ and looks to be one of the first out of the mould with lovely crisp edges and is joined by the usual flashes of lava glaze from West Germany to the ash glazes of studio pottery. The hard to find ‘Nightscape’ series of Isle of Wight glass is included in the section of British, Scandinavian and Italian glasswares. Another range of textiles, lighting and interesting artworks complete the look and as the clock is now ticking down to Christmas a chance to get some early presents or just something for yourself. I will be happy to take enquiries for the items in the sale, or if you are looking to sell Modern Design in 2018 please contact me. James Bassam Senior Valuer

Frank Downton (b.1936) You may think the artworks by Frank Downton look quite familiar and you would be correct as during the 1960’s- 1980’s Frank worked with and for Bridet Riley, Eduardo Paolozzi and Gillian Ayres amongst others during the printing processes involved in their work. He has now turned his steady hand into producing his own work influenced by these greats of post war British art. Each work is cut and laid by hand, no computer programming here and the results are highly visual and striking Op Art pieces.
