ALBERTA 4-H REPORT
Submitted by
Tracy Wood and Colleen Hansen
Della Wise-Whelan
In 2018, 24 Alberta 4-H clubs submitted applications to the Alberta Maine-Anjou Association to recognize the hard work of 67 members showing 91 projects. 28 grand and reserve championships were reported. While applications were down from the 31 clubs counted in 2017, several clubs had seven or more Maine-Anjou projects in their annual shows. Alberta members: if you have sold steers or heifers to 4-H members or attend a 4-H show where Maines are exhibited, please take the time to let those involved know there is recognition available for the efforts of these juniors. The MaineAnjou breeders of tomorrow can be developed through this grassroots promotion. Thank you to those breeders who choose to support the association.

The Carol Eigner Scholarship recognizes a junior with interest in a “niche” breed who is always willing to help and a roll model to many, much like Carol Eigner herself. The announcement was made during the Alberta Supreme Show of Champions on November 10th, 2018. The good news didn’t stop there as Taylor was also announced as a winner of one of four Summer Synergy Setting Sails Trips from the Olds, Alberta show.
Summer Synergy is a junior show dedicated to the development of youth between the ages of 9 and 21. Throughout the first week in July, participants compete with their respective species for points being allotted from three, species-specific activities, a Synergy multi-judging competition and a Synergy marketing component. For the Maine-Anjou breed alone, over the past five years $32,500 in scholarships have been handed out. Taylor will be attending the Sydney Royal Easter Show in Sydney, NSW, Australia in April along with fellow junior, Baxter Blair. Although Taylor isn’t the first of the Pashulka boys to be awarded a trip, he is headed the farthest. Big brother, Riley won a trip to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo in 2017. Congratulations to Taylor on being awarded both a scholarship and trip this past fall. The Maine-Anjou breed was well represented in on the Junior show circuit in 2018.

As someone who grew up through the 4-H and junior programs, you always hear the line told by breeders, judges, and spectators, “youth in agriculture are the future of our programs and our industry, there are none quite like them”. Because we are the future of the cattle industry and our breed associations, we owe it to ourselves and the industry to be the best we can be. If the breed associations invest in us, it will give us new opportunities to grow and promote the association. Promoting us does not have to mean handing us everything we think we need, it could be as simple as giving us a piece of advice, writing a recommendation letter, or letting us know about upcoming events that could enhance our skills. Being someone that never came from a background of purebred cattle or shows, all these little things have helped me become more involved in the industry. Involving us within the breed is something that has become more popular, and I think its extremely important for the juniors to be a part of something that their lives are so heavily involved in. In my opinion I don’t think there will ever be one specific thing that’s going to promote us juniors. But I do think it’s the ongoing added involvement that everyone is promoting. Thirty years ago, the type of junior and youth programs they have going now, never existed and everyone wishes they did. For example, the Angus Association has been pioneers in junior development for many years by putting on influential and informative junior conferences. I think if we stay on the same track that we are on now, of promoting juniors and keeping them involved in what goes on, giving them incentives and amazing opportunities, that will be the best way any association can build and promote youth. That’s why our associations are special, they get youth involved in trips, scholarships, shows and prizes. They are promoting the youth and broadening the associations scope of junior involvement. My suggestion would be, never stop promoting and supporting youth in the associations, to keep the innovative and creative ideas coming forward, always be thinking of the next opportunity that could be arising, or maybe something you’ve always wished you could have done. Give that opportunity to the

younger generation so they can flourish, and gain ideas and knowledge to bring forward.

We can be the best we can be by participating in all the events possible, such as cattle shows, demonstrations, tours, judging, and public speaking. This is what makes us visible advocates in the industry. Likewise, what the breed associations can do for us is to provide more scholarships, trips and prizes creating more incentives for youth. Also, in this age of modern mobile technology, I think it is of utmost importance that we should be continually supported and updated with all the possible advice as youth will play a major role in the further growth of agriculture as they have the natural affinity to information, technology and communication.

Greetings from Down Under Maine-Anjou breeders, It’s been a big year for members of Maine-Anjou Beef Australia, with their stud bulls being sold and used commercially Australia wide from areas such as drought proof King Island, Tasmania in the south of the country to the heart of the harsh outback, Blackall, Queensland. The members are focused on breeding moderate structured stock, that still retain their weight for age attributes and this is the secret to their sales success. The commercial Maine-Anjou Beef Australia breeder such as Ron Crack of King Island says, “Maine-Anjou cattle yield alot better than straight bred British cattle. At the end of the day yield will beat anything and that’s what you get paid for as a farmer.”
Upcoming Event: Maine-Anjou Beef Australia’s National Sale is February 23, 2019. It’s a great opportunity for members to display their best stock and showcase their stud. This year we have a Maine-Anjou barbeque at 6pm on the Friday night before the Sale for prospective buyers to get a sneak peek of the cattle and enjoy Maine-Anjou meat. We set the bar high at the Sale, with all cattle independently vet inspected to ensure purchasers can buy with confidence. Plus all cattle are tested for Pestivirus and meet a biosecurity standard, with a 12 month guarantee on the structure of all cattle.
About Maine-Anjou Beef Australia: Maine-Anjou Beef Australia was established in 2008 with the aim to positively promote the mainstream benefits of the Maine-Anjou breed in Australia. The fast growing membership is a reflection of the benefits of breeding with MaineAnjou beef cattle. More than an association, Maine-Anjou Beef Australia members are strongly focused on breeding moderate sized, sound structured cattle for today’s market, with fast weight gain, easy calving and smooth muscle.
