ORANGE GROVES BECOME MARLEN GROVE Once upon a time, citrus trees grew high in the fields near 12th St and Bethany Home. Citrus was one of the 5 Cs that the pre-war economy was based on in Phoenix: cotton, citrus, cattle, climate and copper. The population in Arizona grew by over 100% during the post-war years (1945-1960), spurring a housing boom.

Ralph Haver is synonymous with mid-century modern architecture in Phoenix. Ralph Haver designed countless residential and commercial buildings both locally and nationally. His first designs date back to 1946. He was quoted as saying, "A building should stay in style at least until the mortgage is paid." Haver's most notable commercial and civic projects include: Madison Rose Lane and Madison #2 schools, Copenhagen Imports (formerly Lou Register Furniture), the social sciences building at ASU, Coronado High School, Kon Tiki Hotel, Cine Capri Theater and the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church. His residential projects are highly sought-after for his trademark architectural features which include vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, clerestory windows, open floorpans and low-sloped roof lines. The better known "Haverhoods" include Marlen Grove, Janet Manor, Mayfair Manor, Starlite Vista, Northwood Homes, Town & Country Manor, Town & Country Scottsdale, Town & Country Paradise, Camelback Park Estates, Windemere and Kensington Terrace. There are custom Havers around the Phoenix metro area in Marion Estates, Tonka Vista, Regents Park, Hixson Homes, Peters View, La Pueblo Bonita, Beverly Park, Ocotillo Hills, Windsor Park, Royal Crest Manor and Madison Village 2.
