Hello and welcome to the first ever print issue of TWO magazine! If you have not met us before, well, we’ve been a digital magazine for three years now with almost 84,000 subscribers around the world. TWO is dedicated to showcasing the stunning work of beauty and fashion focused make-up artists. We have interviewed some of the most creative people in the industry and our pages have been graced by the biggest hitters such as Val Garland, Alex Box, Andrew Gallimore, Terry Barbour and David Horne amongst many, talented others. We aim to inspire MUAs of all levels with a great team of dedicated contributors (yep, that lot on the left there!) who generously share their time and knowledge to help put each issue of TWO together. We hope you enjoy our first print issue and if you are interested in subscribing to a paper version then head over to our website in the next few weeks where you’ll find all the info you need. Our website is currently being rebuilt and will become a central hub for the magazine. www.two-magazine.com Now, pick up your tools and go get your hands dirty! The TWO team. x Submissions

We look for beauty stories that have a minimum of three different images with variation of make-up, but that are clearly from the same shoot. For fashion focused stories, we prefer a minimum of five shots with changes of styling. Please understand that we receive a vast amount of emails each day and it sometimes takes us a while to work through and get back to everyone. We truly appreciate your time and effort submitting to TWO magazine. Please email submissions@two-magazine.com Please do not email regarding work experience/internship as we’re currently unable to take anyone on. Thank you.

Cake liners are making a come back in Bobbi Brown’s Autumn collection ‘The new greige’. There are three small powder liner palettes, each containing three complimentary colours. These little palettes are great for carrying in your kit or to transport in your makeup bag. www.bobbibrown.co.uk

There’s a huge line-up of forty shades in the collection. The sharply angled bullet tip applies with precision and colour glides onto the lips. Creamy but not glossy, it’s more of a rich satin finish and the pigments are true to how they look in the bullet. www.narscosmetics.co.uk

“ TEA STAINED EYES” WO RDS

H EI DI SCARLETT-KI NG

PROBABLY THE MOST WEARABLE TREND FROM LONDON FASHION WEEK SS16 WAS A MODERN TWIST ON THE 90S COOL GRUNGE GIRL. A LIVED-IN, WARM OR MUTED BROWNY CREAM SHADOW ON THE EYES WITH HUMID LOOKING SKIN AND NATURAL OR PALE LIPS. KEY MAKE-UP ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE VAL GARLAND HAS COINED THE TREND AS ‘THE TEA STAINED EYE’ AFTER HER STUNNING CREATION FOR THE ERDEM SHOW. HERE’S MY HOW-TO ON THIS GORGEOUS TREND.

1. CREATE THE BASE It’s important to take a bit of time to prep the skin properly to create the perfect dewy, but not oily, look. After moisturising, apply a dewy finished primer to the skin for a glorious dewy texture. Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum does this perfectly but also keeps make-up on longer. Mix MAC Cosmetics Careblends essential oils with the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream Foundation in the palm of your hand to create a creamy, yet good coverage base and buff into the face.

LDN FW SS16

ERDEM, LFW SS16 COURTESY NARS COSMETICS

Then apply Nars Creamy Concealer to the eye area and anywhere that needs coverage. Then lightly apply Smashbox Photo Set Finishing Powder in a pressing motion in a few areas like the nostrils, front cheeks, eyelids and T-zone, but leave the rest bare. Add Stila Convertable Colour in Camellia to the cheeks. It’s such a perfect browny buff shade and gives natural definition to the cheeks and doubles as a lovely lip stain.

Add MAC Longwear Shadow in Uninterrupted lightly under the lash line on top to seal in the cream colour and intensify the colour. Lightly add in the outer edges of the eye to add depth. Curl lashes and add several coats of mascara for more definition. The new and improved formula of the classic YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils gives the

perfect amount of volume and definition for this look. To naturally bring focus to this eye look, add a line of a lighter coloured cream concealer to the brow bone, just under the brows, with Studio 10 Age Defy Skin Perfector concealer palette. Also tap the edges away. Finish off with a tiny bit more concealer just under the eyes to correct and perfect with the same Studio 10 palette. 3. LIPS To Keep the eyes as the main focus, simply swipe a light neutral shade from the new Kate Moss Nudes Collection by Rimmel in colour Tan Nude 43.

2. EYES Launched just in time for the SS16 show season is another limited edition cream eye palette by MAC Cosmetics. The Trends Spring forecast 16 Palette comes with six shades, but the two middle shades (Back in the Swing and A New Brew) are spot on for this look. Using a soft tapered brush apply the shade across the lid lightly, and blend away the edges around the eye shape. Get a flat brush to deepen the shade along the lower lid and blend in. Using the same shade but a bullet shape brush apply under the lash line, making sure the edges are smoothed out.

Where are you right now? In a cab on my way to the Pixiwoo/NARS dinner! What initially made you decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist? I’ve ALWAYS drawn, painted, made things… One day I swapped paper for faces and I thought it could turn my creative passions into a job. Are you self-taught or did you train somewhere? I owe a lot to my fine art training and assisting Sharon Dowsett… the rest is from setting myself problems to solve!

and obviously I’m thrilled to be the first ever national make-up ambassador for Mr Francois Nars’ brand. How would you define your style… Would you say there’s a particular period that influenced you? I’ve been told it’s ‘beauty with a twist’. I couldn’t put it down to one period, I take influence and get excited about many – especially the future! What do you look for when you are approached about assisting? A spark, a drive, a natural instinct, good initiative. How do you feel the industry has most changed since you first started? The shift to digital quickened the pace. In my early days there was still the “One more roll” ethic to film… Nowadays clients leave the studio with the shoot edited – sometimes even retouched on a memory stick!

One book you would recommend to any MUA? Andrew Gallimore by Rankin! Outside of make-up, what is your passion? Sorry, outside what?! Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. I once caught Catherine Deneuve as she fell off the side of the elevated catwalk when a photographer accidentally knocked her, backstage at a Jean-Paul Gaultier show. She did turn discreetly to say “Merci”. I like to think I saved the life of Paris’ premier Princess!

It’s that time again – London Fashion Week and all the fanfare that comes with it – and that means that not only my models skin but mine must also be in tip-top condition. I discovered another Korean wonder at www.yesstyle.co.uk it’s the most amazing wash off mask made with black sugar, go figure! It literally sloughs off all dead skin and leaves behind beautiful soft clean skin – it’s now a permanent fixture in my kit and my bathroom. Val Garland once again proved why she is at the top of her game with the incredible make-up she did for Gareth Pugh. It was fun, freaky and blew me away – topped off with genius hair by the braveheart Malcolm Edwards. It was definitely, in my opinion, the look of the season! I also have to mention my old pal Wendy Rowe who dared to give us Oxblood Lips for spring. Again for me, it was the most wearable make-up of the season, I loved it so much that I ordered the lipstick the very next day on www.net-a-porter. It’s always great to work with my dear friend, photographer extraordinaire, John Paul Pietrus. We shot a great story for

Stylist magazine using Asian models – a girl and a boy both wearing womens tailoring. We wanted them to look almost twin-like. Make-up was kept minimal – just beautifully polished skin, an ‘invisible’ contour… “Aaah!” I hear you say! Yes, I’m sick of that heavy contouring that makes you look like

a dirty cake face. I used Burberry Beauty Face Contour stick in medium, which blends in beautifully under base. It just gives you that subtle soft sculpt, far more chic than the overuse of contouring powders/creams that I seem to see on far too many people these days. Keep it real guys/gals! I also used very little mascara – literally a tiny touch at the base of the lashes to give a little definition as I wanted to keep them as androgynous as possible. I’m loving Chanel’s Le Volume de Chanel, really black with a great wand which really lifts and opens the eye. I dd a L’Oreal commercial this month which was great fun but also very intense. As always with commercials you’re up against the clock as time is money and we had four girls a day over two days, which is quite a lot for a commercial. In this situation it’s imperative to have a great assistant who you can trust and know that when the going gets tough they’ll just get on with it. A good assistant listens, what you need before you need it! I am lucky to have such a girl – Sadie I love you! We prepped for the shoot a whole day before so we knew exactly what looks were being shot and where the quick changes were. Fail to prepare… well, prepare to fail! The shoot went without a hitch and we had a great time with the fantastic crew. This is what I love about what we do, working with like-minded people who want to produce great work whilst also enjoying the process. I did another fab shoot with fashion photographer Kate DavisMacLeod which we shot on location in a fantastic house in North London. The feel to the shoot was based around the film A Single

Man, directed by Tom Ford – a little bit 60s but not obviously so. I did a clean liner with a tiny flick at the end using MAC Black Tracks – my favoutite as it doesn’t budge once its on. The rest was kept perfectly nude, sometimes all you need is a little detail to make the biggest statement! See you next time make-up junkies! Liz x

MY FAVOURITE THREE...… JENNY POWELL P L AC E S :

FILMS:

CAPE TOWN, STH AFRICA My parents originate from there. A funky, cosmopolitan city with beautiful beaches and mountains on the doorstep. Amazing eateries and bars with the most fantastic views.

B LAZ ING SAD D LES I love Gene Wilder and Richard Prior as a comedy duo and this is a great showcase for that. Mel Brookes is also hilarious. It’s camp, funny and a great rainy day watch.

B R O OK LY N, NY C I have an apartment there, some great friends and more importantly, my fiancé lives there! It’s intoxicating, fills me with excitement and energy and the shopping is, of course, out of this world!

P R E S QU’IL E S G IE NS , F R ANCE A small, beautiful fishing village in Provence close to the sea. It has the most incredible light and climate and I love the food there. It’s a well kept secret of the Cote D’Azur, a hidden gem.

B O OK S : T H E WAY OF T HE P E ACE F UL WA RR IOR – D AN MIL L M AN A spiritual journey of a world champion athlete, uplifting and inspirational, it’s well worth joining this guy on his journey. J A ME S AND THE G IANT P E ACH – ROAL D D AHL Totally captured my imagination as a child. I was completely consumed by the magic of it and could taste every bite of that giant peach – even to this day! A book I insist every child should read. THE GOLDFINCH – DONNA TARTT I love the fact that a lot of this novel is based in my favourite city, New York. A moving and complex adventure and I recommend it as one of my favourite books to my friends.

INT ER ST ELLAR I’m a big fan of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Touching and inspirational, it took me to a great place. I also love the musical score. D IV ER G ENT I think every teenage girl should see this. The main character, Tris, reminds me of my eldest daughter… a fighter, strong and feisty. She is the perfect role model. A must-see if you have teenage kids.

MUSIC: JOHN LEG END Saw him live in New York and he’s hard to beat. Best songs for romance. ST EV IE WOND ER – LAT ELY My favourite song of all time and I love singing it on karaoke! M IC HAEL JAC K SON He must be the best pop artist of all time and I have enjoyed his music through all the stages of my life.

MAKE-UP PRODUCTS: C R EM E D E LA M ER M OIST UR ISER Pricey but worth every penny, a rich and indulgent treat for your skin. NAR S B R ONZ ER A lovely booster to make your skin glow. C HANEL LE V OLUM E D E C HANEL Best mascara ever! Stays on all day, thick and lush lashes guaranteed.

Much has changed since Atlantic City’s (New Jersey)

It’s now a town of beaches, boats, clubs and lots of

all Atlantic City travellers… the seagulls there are no joke – they’ve got street cred I swear! If I couldn’t protect my lunch at least I protected my skin with Tarte’s non-chemical sunblock [ www.tartecosmetics.com ]. It’s a great top pick for those who are into natural skin care. And speaking of products, of course, before I checked out of the hotel I had to check in to the spa for what else but the 24k Gold Signature Facial. For 80 minutes my esthetician Gina steamed, extracted and scrubbed my face until it beamed like jewelery. The best part about this treatment was while the final face mask seeped into my skin, Gina massaged my hands and arms with a gold flecked moisturizer concoction. She said “I treat the hands as this is an much quicker than your face.” I’m definitely adding more sun screen to my hand cream from now on. I walked out of the spa relaxed and my arms covered in gold glitter flecks which made me wish I had done the treatment pre-clubbing the night before! Special note to anyone going to AC on a Tuesday and want to enjoy all the fun stuff that I got to do… The hotel does an ‘industry party’ which combines either your music. Cross the street and enter the main entrance of the hotel lobby where you’ll hear the ching ching of change dropping out of slot machines jingling away in the background like a dance beat. But the real thumping sounds come from its nightclub, Haven. Easily located just an escalator trip down to an underground adult playground of dancing, drinking and yes, of course, gambling. The DJ’s The Dirty South happen to be playing the night I was there and they didn’t disappoint! I channeled my inner rave child, grabbed a glow-stick and hit the dance-floor until my feet hurt.

own pool kiosk or a spa treatment plus a cocktail – now thats a fun way to do beauty! I usually like to end my column and tell you about my favorite beauty finds but this issue I asked my talented friend Lan Nguyen-Grealis for a few of her favourite products that she used in her new book, Art and Makeup. The book is filled with inspiring make-up design and art led inspiration that will blow your mind. Lan’s top three picks are 1) Kryolan Silver Shimmering Event foundation used all over the skin for highlighting throughout the book, 2) Kryolan UV-Dayglow compact with eight colors, 3) MAC Russian Red Lipstick.

After a long daytime shoot and a night on the tiles, the rooftop pool, next morning, was the perfect treat. I let myself melt into the lounge chairs and was in super chill mode until a gutsy seagull decided to swoop down and nab my mozzarella stick! Note to

DR BRONNER PEPPERMINT LIQUID CASTILE SOAP

MUJI TRAVEL SOAPS AVOCADO AND LEMON I travel a lot and hate hotel soaps and shower gels. These are brilliant and are made from glycerine too so they keep the moisture on your skin, good money well spent.

NO7 FOR MEN ANTI-SHINE LOTION The best facial moisturiser I’ve found. I’m not a fan of really expensive products and this is perfectly priced and last for ages. As I have naturally oily skin it’s good to have something that takes the shine off.

This is my go-to moisturiser of choice. With the added SPF it offers minimal protection but never the less very welcome and you smell pretty nice too.

CLINIQUE POST SHAVE SOOTHER I’ve been using this for the last six years – an oldie but a goodie. I don’t grow much facial hair but suffer greatly from shaving rash. This stuff keeps it all at bay and without fail keeps the bumps off my face. It’s one of those classic products that I feel will never go out of fashion – vive la Clinique!

PHILIPS BT5260 PRECISION STUBBLE BEARD TRIMMER As I don’t grow much facial hair my beard is limited to a strange kind of stubble, honestly it doesn’t grow much more than that. This also doubles up as a make shift clipper for my hair too. Great for travelling and very reliable.

ACQUA DI PARMA BLU MEDITERRANEO GINEPRO DI SARDEGNA The Acqua di Parma range is brilliant and well crafted. This one in particular is a favourite for the summer, made from Juniper the berry that gives gin its flavour. It’s really fresh and a good mixture of masculinity and freshness.

Possibly the most refreshing shower you’ll ever have. I used it at a friend’s house and had to go out and find it. It’s 100% natural and the peppermint is really invigorating first thing in the morning and more importantly it scrubs you clean like no other.
