IS FOR LOTTIE

T WO M AGAZ I N E # 35 JU N E / J U LY 2 016

IT ONLY SEEMS A FEW YEARS AGO THAT LOTTIE STANNARD FOUND HERSELF WORKING IN LONDON AS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER BEFORE FOLLOWING HER HEART AND TRANSFERING HER CREATIVE SKILLS TO MAKE-UP ARTISTRY. LOTTIE HAS SINCE BECOME ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED NAMES IN THE GAME AND NOW CONSTANTLY TRAVELS ON ASSIGNMENT BETWEEN HER NATIVE CALIFORNIA AND NYC, ALONG WITH KEYING SHOWS IN THE WORLD’S FASHION CAPITALS.

14 Where are you right now? I’m on an airplane to LA from NYC. What made you decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist? I was always fascinated by make-up art and fashion but in the beginning it came from a love of design and graphics. I loved Vaughn Oliver (graphic designer in the UK) and Serge Lutens and made collages from

Vogue, The Face and various other magazines growing up. Are you self-taught or did you train somewhere? I trained as a graphic designer but am self-taught in make-up. Which other make-up artist(s) helped you along the way? There are so many make-up artists who helped me along the way and still do, that I couldn’t possibly name them all but I’ll start with my friend Elvira Gonzales who gave me my initial push and confidence to put myself out there, and to Pat McGrath who I worked with for many years and who helped mould me into the artist I am today.

How would you define your style… Is there a particular period that influenced you most? My style is definitely highly based on color, graphic shapes and use of balance and light.

17

As for time periods, I would say 60s, 70s and 80s. What do you look for when someone approaches you about assisting? I tend to bond heavily with my assistants, so aside from knowing how to do great skin work and pay attention to detail, they have to be driven, passionate and have a good sense of humour. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? When I first started, make-up was heavier and more powerful in terms of colour and objects used (paper, plastic, feathers

One book you would recommend to any MUA? I’m a make-up book collector so that’s a hard one. Definitely start with Stephane Marais’ Beauty Flash or Topolino’s Make-Up Games.

Outside of make-up, what is your passion? I’m a huge film and music lover and am super passionate about both. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. That one time I tripped over the camera cord and went flying into the seamless in front of the entire crew and five models. That was pretty funny/embarrassing! ♦

TALES FROM THE CHAIR Liz Martins is a tireless make-up maverick who brings her milkshake to the yard! An in-demand MUA with a passion for fashion and music. www.twitter.com/thelizmartins www.instagram.com/thelizmartins WELL, FASHION WEEK CAME AND WENT BUT I’D LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE SHOW I HEADED THE MAKE-UP FOR PPQ AND HOW WE WORKED ON THE LOOK.

As well as working with Face Lace the show as sponsored by Models Own. They used to just do nail polishes but their new range of make-up is totally kick ass! Lip paints, metallic foil effect shadows… the range goes on and on. It launched in April and really is a great range if you want to build up your kit with amazing colours and textures at a fraction of the cost of some of the bigger brands. I loved working with the prodcucts – it’s a huge thumbs up from me! I’ve been doing lots of beauty shoots these last few months and one was shot by beauty photo wonderboy, Arved Colvin-Smith. We got down and dirty on a Saturday and played around with loads of different ideas, from gorgeous luminous hyper glossy skin to painting freckles all over the models face and then just beautiful stark blackberry lips. It’s always so much fun when you can just freestyle. A footnote here, if your gonna’ paint freckles, get yourself a MAC Penultimate Brow Marker, it gives you the most natural looking freckles FULL STOP! I’ve worked on music videos for years and recently shot with new Russian sensation, Polina, on her new single. One day, four looks – yes four! It was an early start and a late finish, videos always push you to the limits as it’s all about speed whilst keeping the artist happy and looking on point. We went from a classic smokey eye, to nude, to a whimsical pink eye, finishing with a shock of red. Bare Minerals UK Bare Skin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer kept Polina’s skin flawless throughout. ♦ Til’ next time Make-up Junkies! Liz x

I’ve worked with the iconic designers PPQ on and off since their first collection at London Fashion Week back in the early noughties. PPQ have a definitive look and it usually involves eyeliner, so rather then go down the feline flick route (which Amy, one of the design duo, really hearts) I thought let’s push it a little further. The collection had lots of pastels in it that were very feminine but teamed with PVC, so quite punky. I got to work alongside Phylis Cohen of Face Lace and together we created an awesome applique liner. It was an amazing experience going to Phylis’ studio and playing with different shapes – literally tailoring the liner on the computer and then seeing it emerge from the lazer cutter, utter magic! The reason I wanted to do an applique liner was so that make-up on every single model would be uniform. There would be no mistakes. It would be my ultimate perfect liner! Phyllis and I worked so well together that we’re planning to collaborate again and work on some new liner ideas.

BRIDAL

With wedding season well and truly in full swing, this month we are exploring a make-up artist’s bread and butter and talking about an often tricky business – bridal make-up. What do you do when your bride insists on an ‘instagram’ brow? A strong smokey eye? How exactly do we keep bridal makeup on trend yet still creating a classic application that will look current for years to come? In make-up terms, everything is on steroids in the

FROM MUSCLE CARS, TO MARILYN MONROE, TWO TAKES INSPIRATION FROM ARTIST ROBERT MARS AND HIS UNIQUE VISION OF CLASSIC AMERICAN ICONOGRAPHY. From his New York studio, Robert Mars layers his artwork with glimpses of the golden age of American popular culture, combining bold colours with graphic shapes and icons of the 1950s and 60s. With positive comparisons to legends of Pop Art such as Warhol and Rauschenberg, his images of Americana can be seen on the walls of galleries all over the world. Mars’ more recent work explores the world of fashion, music and the culture of celebrity, depicting icons such as Debbie Harry and Kate Moss against a backdrop of instantly recognisable brand marks and logos. These canvases may have more contemporary references but still have the same distinct vintage quality and tongue-in-cheek attitude that we loved in his early work. ♦

What made you want to travel and discover beauty treasures? I wanted to live a fulfilled balanced life. I knew make-up was my passion but felt there was a deeper meaning to be discovered.

What was your first trip? Tell us a little about what you found. My first trip was to India, the mecca for ancient beauty. It was a two week adventure that showed me this journey wasn’t going to be easy. It wasn’t glamorous but it was real. I stayed at an Ayurveda clinic in Kerala (birthplace of this 5000 year-old medicine of beauty) and I took part in treatments using oils, and plants to balance my beauty. I also went exploring by myself and it took a lot of nerve jumping on random buses and tuk-tuks, but it had to be done. If I wanted to get to the source I needed to be fearless. I found plants that were used in henna process, hair conditioners, and natural creams that women have been using for thousand of years. One of the most powerful moments of my life was visiting an orphanage in India and all the girls wanted to know about my beauty – but I was there to learn about theirs. From that day I knew my mission was to keep these ancient traditions alive so we as women could be proud of our beauty roots and culture. After my first trip I knew these stories existed, these experiences were one of a kind, and I wanted to bring them forward. What was your latest trip? I was just in Colombia #BeautyExploring. I found the most incredible treatments in the North, where they use everything from the sea to cleanse and detoxify the body. I visited sacred ponds untouched by humans, with clear water where the indigenous still hold their sacred practices. Visiting Cartagena were the bold colors and high walls truly make you feel like your in another world, I found interesting soaps made of local ingredients like avocado, rice, and also many odd hair masks. Colombia loves beauty so while visiting markets I found endless amounts of hair salons offering extensions, hair colour and beauty products by the dozens. What stands out as something very interesting or strange that others do for beauty in a different country? Living in NYC you see everything but what really stands out from different countries are their marriage rituals. We have some of our

own here in America but a wedding truly is a rite of passage, and women take it very seriously. In places like Zanzibar, India, and even Tanzania, to get a women ready for a wedding is a week-long process. In that week they show her how to be a woman, from make-up, to body scrubs, to cooking – it’s a bootcamp for marriage. What have you discovered about yourself from all of your travels and how has it effected you as a mua? It’s affected me in such a big way. Travelling and getting to meet real women, I have a better respect for the world as a whole. I love harder, I do what I love and don’t take it for granted. In a weird way it’s like I found my calling as an artist. It brings me purpose, truth, and a sense of spirituality. I get to be inspired by the world and to create onto my canvas of beauty. I also know so many ingredients from South America to Japan that really help me understand products, their stories and how these brands came to existence. Our goal is to trace these back to the source and see first-hand how these stories came about. I’ve discovered that the more I’ve travelled in search of beauty, the more I see it all around me every step along the way.

My ultimate favorites are high Impact Clinique Waterproof Mascara, Clinique Chubby Intense Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm, Moisture Surge Face Spray, Skin Iceland Hydro Cool firming eye gels and Gillette Venus Snap Razor. Falsies are a must while I travel... come on, I’m a make-up artist, what do you expect?! What products have you found on your travels that are your favorites and where are they from? There’s so many, but here are my top 3: Himalaya Herbals Kajal in India, Pig Nose Clear Blackhead 3-Step Kit in Korea and Maintenance Cenizo Especial Blue Hair shampoo from Colombia. Where would you like to visit in the future? I really want to go #BeautyExploring in Turkey. It would be a dream to visit the markets and see all the textiles. I’m aiming for 2017. We also have Beauty Tours happening this year which I’m so excited about. Now you can come on a beauty adventure with us! Our destinations all have an indigenous story. We travel to Tanzania to learn about the Maasai, Colombia to swim in sacred waters, Mexico for Day of the Dead in Oaxaca and Japan to explore Kyoto, the Geisha capital. We wanted to offer our readers an experience to travel the world in search of beauty. Now it’s possible. It’s our newest venture but people are already signing-up wanting to be part of the movement. ♦

SKIN BOOSTERS

Sometimes, no amount of filler or botox will detract from skin that is dehydrated and tired but there is one way that is underused and a hidden gem in my toolbox: Skin Boosters. What are they? Skin Boosters are hyularonic acid fillers but are much lighter than normal fillers and don’t build or lift. They sit just under the skin surface and attract water and promote collagen growth – just what dehydrated, tired skin needs. No worries about ‘pillow cheeks’ or ‘trout pout’ with these fillers. What’s the process? A really tiny needle is used to deliver small drops all over the skin surface in the area being treated. A little massage afterwards and the work starts. One treatment a month for three months, then one six months after and then one year after to maintain the effect. What is the effect? Hydrated skin, with that long ago lost glow and with far fewer fine wrinkles, scars and blemishes. Where is it used? It’s excellent for those fine lines around the mouth,

the ones that lipstick runs into, especially for smokers whose skin has suffered from both the lip pursing and oxygen starvation effects. The fine lines around and under the eyes respond well as does the aging décolletage that has seen a little sun over the years! Let’s not forget the difficult to treat neck area that can really let the world know how old we are and let down good work on the face. Couple this with the back of the hands and those usual give away areas are gone. We can even treat acne scars with them! I don’t know why this little secret winner isn’t used more. Perhaps because the results build over weeks and months and a series of treatments is necessary. Whatever it is, I couldn’t recommend them enough as a real skin reconditioning treatment that works and is long term. ♦ Check it out at www.restylane.com/Restylaneskinboosters/how-it-works
