Louisiana’s Future
Coastal Louisiana has lost an average of 34 square miles of land per year for the last 50 years. From 1932 to 2000, the coast has lost 1,900 square miles of land and still rises. If nothing is placed to combat this situation, Louisiana could potentially lose approximtely 700 additional square miles of land, or an area equal to the size of Washington D.C. in the next 50 years.
Coastal Loss and Baton Rouge’s Density
The map shows how dense Baton Rouge is and with an area with such density, flooding may become an issue to those occuping it. We see that the densest area contains an population of 5000 per sq mile. This leaves a question of how can we protect such a dense area when water is the enemy that is continually taking away land.
Ward Creek and Mississippi Delta
Just like the Mississippi Delta, Ward Creek has the potential to cause flooding issues with the current site. The two have similar issues except Government street is not losing land unlike the delta. Studying both areas should form some solutions that are cohesive enough to work in the sites architecture.

Zoning of the Site
The site is zoned as commercial and ajacent to it is residential. So a question for the site or library is how can the two interact? The library should pertain to challenges around the area either it’s environmental or just your basic everyday life activities.
Final Library Iteration
For this portion of the project there was a strong concentration of materials, programs, atmospheres, and circulation to ensure design excellence. In the last project there were concrete facade panels but using that material was not an effective strategy. The next idea was to use brass panels reinforced with studs to ensure stability. Not only was the brass a better chose structural wise but it also helped in the building’s presence on the site. When passing the building on government street, the reflective material will create a strong presence for the library in hope of attracting the public.
Auditorium’s Message.
Embracing mother nature such as rain is still the most important factor of the library. This moment in time is caught in the underground auditorium to enhance the atmosphere. Imagine watching a performance and out of no where you see rushing water rising. Now this was Baton Rouge in August of 2016 when residents were caught off guard when the water had no where else to go but up. In this Auditorium I hope to raise awareness to these conditions that may happen again in the Baton Rouge area.
Circulating Water in a Innovative Way
In both sections we still see that the building has a unique way of draining water. The curtain walls extrude from the second floor all the way to the roof and bleeds into the home exhibit. This allows the building to become a system rather than just a building. The curtain walls also provide a aesthetic structure in the interior of the lounge and walkways. As rain proceeds the public can enjoy how the building circulates water from the roof to the exhibit.
It provides a sense of sustainability and also provide a preview on how we can challenge moving water. The exhibit, curtain walls, homes, and curtain walls are what makes this building something Baton Rouge has never experienced.
Site Work
Implementing access from the boardwalk through the exhibit to the building was the focus of the project. Keeping the circulation of the site simple and time effective is key to a effective program. Each of the areas work off each other to be comprehensive. The parti diagram shows how the building itself breaks apart and shows how each has a function of themselves. As you can see both site and building depends on the next to be successful.
