Poetry reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings. Poetry is the mainstay of oral tradition and, over centuries, can communicate the innermost values of diverse cultures. In celebrating World Poetry Day, March 21, UNESCO recognises the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind. Check out some of these fascinating poetry collections on the library shelves: Off to the sweet shores of Africa and other talking drum rhymes by Uzoamaka Chinyelu Unobagha A vibrantly illustrated collection of poetry from Africa told with verve and loads of rhythm.

A quark for Mister Mark: 101 poems about science by Jon Turney In a wonderfully eclectic and lively selection of poems, this anthology counters the notion that science and poetry are magnetically opposed.

Poems for funerals: readings [sound recording] by Paul Kelly A beautiful collection of poems, sonnets, hymns and elegies to use for end of life celebrations.

Dad, you're not funny and other poems [sound recording] by Steve Turner The poet takes a quirky look at the pains and pleasures of growing up in this collection of witty and thought-provoking poems.

Canty and couthie : familiar and forgotten Scots poems by Anne Forsyth This collection of traditional Scottish verse contains poems of childhood, poems of the countryside, poems of hardship and others that tell a wryly comical story.

Poetry comes from the highest happiness or the deepest sorrow. - A.P.J Abdul Kalam
