2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages UNESCO has deemed that 2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages, where ‘languages play a crucial role in the daily lives of people, not only in education, communication, social integration and development, but also as a repository for each person’s unique identity, cultural history, traditions and memory.’ Underpinning this is the level of endangerments of traditional Indigenous languages across the world. In Australia, the statistics are harsh – of the 250 traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages only 145 are still spoken in some form; 18 of these are considered ‘strong/thriving’ while 110 of these are classified as ‘critically endangered’ (National Indigenous Languages Survey, 2005). Darumbal: the language of Rockhampton by Angela Terrill (2002) Part of the Shorter Grammar series in the Pacific Linguistics Studies examining aboriginal languages. Ngathu bimbi bulba by Nhaya Nyoka Hatfield A picture book targeting older children focusing on safety, relationships and sexuality told with Darumbal words, English words and pictures created by young local artists.

Indigenous sign language and culture by Susannah O’Reilly (2006) A useful compendium of interpretation needs of deaf Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people living in far north Queensland. The Mook Mook series by Marie Kemp (2012) This colourful series about a young Aboriginal boy and his group of animal friends includes Mook Mook saves Woora; Mook Mook and the pee wee; Mook Mook goes fishing. Sunday Too Far Away Jack Thompson is Foley, the best shearer on every station for miles around. Sunday Too Far Away is Foley’s story of sweat-soaked days and rum-soaked ‘fight’ nights, as well as the scab labour brought in during the Shearers’ Strike of 1956. Skylab [French film with English sub-titles] It's summer 1979 in Brittany, and a family gathers to celebrate the grandmother’s 80th birthday. The extended family are a garrulous collection and there’s a hint of tension in the air, as the Skylab is rumoured to return to earth during the same weekend, in either Brittany or Perth. The cast represents the very finest of young and vintage French acting talent (Eric Elmosnino Summer Hours, Valerie Bonneton Little White Lies), and the joie de vivre of the gathering is infectious. Skylab is a funny, tender and occasionally irreverent look back to the end of the 70s, to childhood, and to summer holidays.

Experimenta – ‘Catch Your Breath’ by Andrew Styan Installation at the Gracemere Library (17 October – 2 December 2018) Open during the library’s opening hours. Our breath is formless and invisible — lost to us once exhaled — unless it is enveloped and given shape with a balloon, a soap film or water. 'Catch Your Breath' is an experience where the visitor captures their own breath as a bubble in a tank of water using high-speed flash photography. The aim of the work was to emphasize the uniqueness of each individual, while hinting at a beauty which is common to all. First exhibited at The Lock-Up (Newcastle), audiences of all ages were drawn to the installation and the playful nature in which it captured its form. Participants were inspired to get creative with how they influenced the outcome, which resulted in almost 5000 bubble photographs being created. Visit catch-your-breath.com for more information on this installation. ‘Catch Your Breath’ a work from Experimenta Make Sense, with the full exhibition displayed at the Rockhampton Art Gallery.

Three reasons why you should join one of our Book Clubs 1. You will read books you would NEVER read otherwise - We all have our favorite genres... and our not so favourite genres. Maybe you love the classics, but you're not so into robots and aliens. That's why we need book clubs: to make us read those books that we never would have picked up on our own. 2. You will meet new book lovers - You can never have enough literary-minded friends. 3. There are reading deadlines - When you have to finish a book in time for your next book club meeting, you have a great excuse to ignore all other obligations, lock yourself in your room, and actually finish a book. 16

kids New sessions starting in January 2019 Baby Play

Sing and Play

The sessions will focus on baby paced play, rhyme and shared stories in a way that supports parents/caregivers as baby’s most important educator – with plenty of opportunity to learn and grow together.

Play is critical to your child’s development – it is how they learn to process the world around them.

Babies learn largely through their senses: their eyes, ears, nose, hands, and mouth are their tools. As babies grow, they learn to use their bodies to make discoveries. They begin to reach and grasp which allows them to explore toys in new ways. Engaging baby’s senses through different activities, this session gives parents and carers the tools to help their babies grow through play. This session is part of the First 5 Forever initiative.

Sing and Play sessions are designed to provide children and parents/caregivers opportunities for shared play, singing and reading, supporting the language and literacy development of children in the first five years of their life. This session is part of the First 5 Forever initiative. Join us at Northside Library on 31 January, 10am - 10.45am for our first session of 2019.

Join us for Baby Play at the Southside Library on 23 January, 10am - 10.30am for the start of this new program.

First day of school Get ready for the start of the school year by reading stories about these important first experiences with your child. There are a number of great picture books that can provide information about what to expect during these formative days and weeks. Search under the subject heading ‘First day of school – Juvenile fiction’ on the library catalogue. Here are some charming picture books on the topic:

Little Owl’s first day by Debi Gliori

Twig by Aura Parker

Little Owl would rather stay at home with Mum Owl and his baby sister than go to school. But at school he gets to build a rocket, learns to fly and even make a tiny new friend. Maybe days spent with friends can be special after all.

"One, two, three - why won't someone play with me?” Heidi is a stick insect, long and thin like the twig of a tree. It's her first day at a busy bug school, where she hopes to learn lots and make new friends. But finding friends isn't easy when no-one can find you! Can you find Heidi?

Twindergarten by Nikki Ehrlich It's the night before the twins Dax and Zoe are starting kindergarten, and they have the just-about-to-start-school jitters. After all, they will be in different classrooms! What will kindergarten be like when they're not together all day? But Dax and Zoe will learn that kindergarten is full of new surprises and adventures, and being apart for a short while isn't so bad. 30

Bear’s big day by Salina Yoon Bear, feeling very grown-up, says goodbye to his stuffed rabbit, Floppy, and starts his first day of school but soon he is missing Floppy and worrying that he is not ready to be a big bear, after all.

Memoir Writing Every Tuesday | 9.00am – 11.00am | Library Technology Centre, Southside Library Older people seeking to write their memoirs, stories or poetry may find that access to a computer and word processing makes typing and formatting their book ready for selfpublication a satisfying option. LTC volunteer tutors assist at the regular Practice Makes Perfect computer workshops every Tuesday morning to help people working on a small word-processing project such as a book or collection of poetry, involving digital skills learnt previously in computer classes. For inspiration to tell your story why not check out the below memoirs from the library. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

Where the Past Begins by Amy Tan

This celebrated memoir has some sections that are very hard to read, given the subject matter (racism, sexual violence), but it's a literary touchstone for a reason. Full respect to the late, great poet.

Where the Past Begins is probably unlike any other memoir you'll ever read. Tan approached the memoir with spontaneous prose. This is the journey into a writer's mind, as much as it is an overview of Tan's life events.

The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls

Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt

This memoir about the author’s childhood in poverty is a testament to the power of resilience and finding the good in even the most difficult situations.

On growing up in Ireland (the basis of this memoir), McCourt wrote, “I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while.

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama

This memoir by 20-yearold Nobel Peace Prize winner Yousafzai (who was attacked by the Taliban for her outspokenness on the importance of girls’ education) is stunningly inspirational.

Obama’s 2004 memoir (long before the whole president thing) is a compelling meditation on growing up as the son of a black African father and a white American mother.

International Day of People with a Disability (IDPwD) Southside Library - Fitzroy Room 3 December | 11.00am – 1.00pm Check out the gorgeous display of artwork created by local people as part of the IDPwD celebrations and sign the Visitors’ book. Help make a Christmas decoration and decorate the tree in the Library foyer. Have your hearing tested on International Day of People with a Disability with Australian Hearing. Enjoy a morning cuppa and cake.

Accessibility for our library members Hearing Loop in the Fitzroy Room Hearing loss is a major public health issue affecting one in five people. A hearing loop has been installed in the Fitzroy Room for patrons who use hearing aids or cochlear implants. What is a hearing loop? A hearing loop system is an Assistive Listening System that transfers sound—from a microphone or TV—directly to a hearing device or cochlear implant, via a tiny and inexpensive telecoil (t-coil) receiver. How do I use a hearing loop? All cochlear implants and approximately 65% of hearing aids have a built in wireless receiver called a telecoil (t-coil). To use a hearing loop, simply turn on a t-coil by pushing a button on the hearing device. This may need to be activated by your audiologist.

Subtitled DVDs The libraries have nearly 2000 subtitled DVDs in the collection ranging from TV shows, movies, non-fiction and junior titles. Search under the term ‘Video recordings for the hearing impaired’ on the library catalogue to reveal a great selection. Beamafilm also has some great subtitled content – pop in ‘English subtitles’ in the search box.

Mobility Scooters A Recharge Point for a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair is located near the selfcheckout machines at the Southside Library. A charging point for mobile phones and tablets is located in the same space providing a one stop access point for patrons using a wheelchair.
