WELL, HELLO

Hello and welcome to Two Point Four magazine In February, we’ve been:

Ooooh, it’s spring. And thank goodness for that. The nights are starting to get lighter and we can think about turning down the heating. Well, maybe. It’s great to be able to shed our bulkiest winter coats and head out on bright sunny walks to spot bluebells and breathe in that fresh spring air. In this issue, you can find some great tips and ideas for Mother’s Day. Whether you’re arranging something for your mum, want to spoil your other half or want to suggest a few ideas to the kids (or their dad), then we’ve got the low-down on ways to create the perfect Mother’s Day. And of course, hot on the heels of Mother’s Day is the Easter break. With hot cross buns, chocolate, a two-week school holiday, more chocolate and two bank holidays, what’s not to love about Easter? While two weeks off the school run sounds appealing, it’s easy for the days to drift and before you know it, it’s uniform time again. On pages 22–26, you can find our round up of the best days out to keep your little bunnies entertained. And of course, no Easter would be complete without an egg hunt so we’ve searched high and low for the best spots to turn egg detective. We’ve long been toying with the idea of taking our tent and the kids and heading to a family-friendly UK festival, and this year seems the ideal time to finally give a weekend under canvas a whirl. With a teen to impress with some great headline acts, as well as little tots to entertain, we’re spoilt for choice. On pages 30 –31 we’ve shared our research, and our shortlist, and who knows, we just might see some of you there… If so, happy camping! Keep an eye out for the next issue in May and happy Easter!

READING: Julia Donaldson’s The Paper Dolls is a big hit with the little ones, while our teen has been immersed in The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. What started as a school text has really captured his imagination. WATCHING: Yet again, we adults are behind everyone else and have finally caught up with Sherlock and huge US show The Blacklist, as well as becoming embroiled, again, in Broadchurch. All truly addictive stuff.

EATING: As a treat in the midst of our busy weeks, as a family we’ve been going out for Sunday lunch when we can. Delicious meals, chatting around the table and no washing up. Win win. A particular favourite was The Windmill Inn at Brascote. PLANNING: After our feature on New Year Resolutions last issue, how are yours going? We made just a handful of pledges for the year ahead, and so far, so good. We’re drinking more water, exercising regularly and, thanks to the joys of the 5:2 diet, we’re feeling pretty good. How about you?

s a mother of two girls, every morning is a blur of bobbles, brushes and tears. Mine usually. At best, my daughters leave the house with wonky pigtails and unravelling plaits and everyone’s nerves are frayed. Luckily help is at hand. Donovan Hair, created by experienced hairstylist Tina Donovan, has launched fantastic hair workshops aimed at mothers like me, with two left thumbs and an inability to do anything more than clip in a hair slide at a jaunty angle.

All change for Thomas Keep fans of Thomas the Tank Engine entertained this Easter by heading to Drayton Manor which is now bigger than ever, thanks to a £2.5million expansion. As a result, Europe’s only Thomas Land is now 40% bigger, boasting three new rides and a new Sodor Airport terminal. The new rides are Flynn the Fire Engine (complete with on-board hoses to douse those fires), Captain’s Sea Adventure with water-shooting cannons, and the wobbling, spinning Toby’s Tram Express. There’s also a café, a Fat Controller fountain, some Victorian fairground games and

With Tina’s help (and a little chocolate-themed bribery to keep my girls entertained so I could twist, curl, plait and play), I was able to master a number of styles to reproduce easily – even on rushed nursery mornings. My daughters now sport all kinds of styles including buns, plaits and ponytails, even the ever-popular ‘Elsa plait’ requested time and time again. It’s no exaggeration to say that my 90 minutes with Tina has revolutionised my mornings. Maybe even my life! And, just as much of a Godsend, Tina also holds workshops for us grown ups too. You can learn how to blow dry to create volume or use curling wands or straighteners to learn what works for your hair, either alone or in a small group. You can even learn how to create the perfect up-do. Needless to say, I’m first in the queue.

Glamping is camping but without the hard work. Instead, you arrive to find everything set up and ready, with real beds, lighting and even crockery and cutlery all just waiting to be put to use. choice between its gorgeously romantic bell tents and its gloriously retro caravans. The elegant bell tents stand almost 12 feet high and sleep up to five people with plenty of space. Furnished with beds, rugs, a table, BBQ, electric cool box to keep your supplies cool and a kettle for your first-thing cuppa. And of course, snuggling up under canvas with the kids (or without. After all we did say they were romantic…) wouldn’t be complete without strings of fairy lights. However if you fancy a break, strictly adults only, the retro caravans are a nostalgic blast from the past and, as they only sleep two, there’s no room for little stowaways. Sorry kids. MONEY MATTERS When couples separate, it’s a worrying time for everyone. Two Point Four talks to Mark Perrett, Family Law Solicitor from Bray and Bray Solicitors, to get the low-down on the most important financial matters when relationships break down

E

veryone hopes for a happy ever after, but some relationships don’t stand the test of time and couples separate. Knowing what’s what when it comes to the financial arrangements is essential to move forward. Here’s Mark’s advice on maintenance – what it is, how to agree a figure and knowing where you stand. What is maintenance? Put simply, the law states that following a breakdown of a relationship, the parent who does not have care of the child or children is legally obliged to pay maintenance to support their needs. If the parents are married, the parent who does not have primary care of the children may also be required to pay

maintenance for their spouse or ex-spouse if they are divorced/legally separated. This is dependent on the financial circumstances of the payer and their ability to make these types of payments. The most cost-effective way of agreeing child and spousal maintenance is often for parents to come to their own agreement, by themselves, through their solicitor or through mediation. Another option is to go through the Child Maintenance Service (CMS). However, if the CMS are required to collect the maintenance, a penalty of an additional 20% of the monthly payment is added for the payer, as well as a loss of 4% of the maintenance

each month for the payee. If you need assistance in agreeing a figure, the CMS has a formula which can be found on their website: cmoptions.org. This can be used for calculating child support without any third party assistance. While some couples are able to agree financial arrangements amicably, it is not uncommon for this to become an area of dispute. If you have questions about this or just want to know where you stand, we are happy to give you some free initial advice over the phone, before you decide whether you want to go ahead with anything. Contact Mark on 0116 254 8871 or email maperrett@braybray.co.uk

Oh it’s such a

Perfect Day When it comes to celebrating the sheer, unadultered brilliance of mums (be it yours, your children’s or heck, yourself), getting it right is child’s play with our top 10 tips

18

PARENTING

L

et’s be honest, when it comes to celebrations, Mother’s Day is a biggie. Whether you’re celebrating your mum or are a mum yourself, this is your chance to show her (or be shown) how ruddy amazing mums are. While we all know that the days of grabbing some last-minute flowers from the garage are over, fret not, it doesn’t need to cost big bucks or need endless planning. While a thoughtful gift goes a long way to telling mums how much they’re appreciated and loved, there are plenty of other meaningful ways of telling her she’s the bees knees.

For mums with small children or older children who insist on early rising, you can’t go wrong with a lie in. And a proper lie in at that. An hour’s extra sleep won’t cut it. Make it at least two and you’ll be in the good books all day and it doesn’t cost a penny.

1

Breakfast in bed is always a winner, as long as it’s edible and the children haven’t masterminded ‘interesting’ combinations such as poached eggs in porridge or cold toast with gherkins and tea made from the hot water tap. Make up a tray with some of her favourite things and as long as it’s vaguely edible, it’s an easy way to say ‘we think you’re brill’.

2

3

Homemade gifts genuinely mean the world. Whether it’s cards, pictures, photo albums or tasty treats like cakes, biscuits and fudge, they’re a direct way to a mother’s heart. However, a word of warning. There’s never any need for glitter. Or teeny tiny confetti. Or papier mâché. And it’s essential that every last trace of mess is cleared up…

4

Flowers never fail to delight. We all have our favourite flowers, whether they’re cheap and cheery daffodils, elegant tulips, scented stocks or romantic roses, the crinkle of cellophane tends to send us a little giddy. Add a raffia bow and we’re practically beside ourselves.

5

Give her some peace. For most mums who are used to juggling countless balls, the very idea of silence makes them drool. Rather than a traditional gift, why not make a homemade voucher offering her an hour/ afternoon,/day/weekend* (*delete according to how generous you’re feeling and how much hard work your kids are) of quiet time to read, watch TV, shop, sleep… You take the kids out and leave her to enjoy the solitude. Lucky, lucky mummy… A meal out is always a treat – no cooking, preparing or washing up, what’s not to love? And we’re spoilt for choice. Regardless of budget and taste, we’re surrounded by great options for lunch or dinner. Whether you head to Highcross in Leicester for the well-known names such as Carluccio’s, Zizzi, Chiquito or Frankie and Benny’s, or drive out to a country pub for a traditional Sunday lunch, there’s plenty on offer. Lots of places will be offering discounts, deals or special Mother’s Day menus, so it’s worth looking around to get the best deal. Just make sure you reserve a table.

6

7

What’s not to love about the combination of hot tea and lots of cake? Afternoon tea is a wonderful way to treat your mum, or be treated yourself. We’re lucky in that we’re spoilt for choice around here with so many great venues. Kilworth House, South Kilworth is offering a Champagne afternoon tea at £31 per person on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 March, while Hothorpe Hall in Theddingworth has afternoon tea for £20 per person and £10 per child on Sunday 15 March. In Market Harborough, the Three Swans has a selection of afternoon teas on offer including one with a warm chocolate fondue.

PARENTING

Beauty treatments, if they’re her bag (and why wouldn’t they be?), are pure indulgence. Whether it’s a manicure, pedicure, facial or massage, she’ll feel a million dollars and will be walking on air.

8

9

Or, really earn some brownie points by booking her a day at a spa. If you want her to be relaxed, pampered and probably speechless with gratitude, there are plenty to choose from. Ragdale Hall offer spa experiences from £77, while Eden Hall Day Spa visits start at £89. Keep an eye on discount sites, such as GroupOn, for some great spa deals at less well-known spas as you can pick up a bargain.

Pack up the kids and the kitchen sink and head outdoors for a family day out. National Trust have some beautiful houses and grounds to explore, while local parks, commons and green spaces are a great way to blow off the cobwebs and let the little ones run themselves ragged, hopefully leaving you to enjoy a relaxing lunch without too much fidgeting. • If you fancy treating Mum to a relaxing breakfast, head to Blenheim Palace’s Water Terrace Cafe where you can order breakfast, drink coffee and enjoy the Sunday papers with some smooth live jazz as part of the stately home’s Jazz Sundays (from 10am until 12.30pm). Then go and explore the stunning house and gardens and best of all, you can turn the entry cost into an annual pass at no extra cost – ideal for the summer months. • Drayton Manor are offering a two-course carver in their hotel restaurant, with a free gift for mum as well as the chance to enjoy the theme park. Entry is £10 (usually £18) and lunch is £16.95 for adults, £8.50 for under 12s and free for under 2s. • Go along to Hatton Adventure World on Mother’s Day where little ones can enjoy meeting the animals, playing indoors and out, and then they can pick a bunch of daffs to take home for Mummy or Grandma. • Conkers is hosting a special Mother’s Day lunch in its Gallery restaurant so you can team a fun day out with a warming lunch. Adults from £11.95, children from £6.95.

As always, we talked to Narborough Hall’s buyer, Sophie, to see what she would recommend for those of you searching for that special gift:

WASH AND GO This handy washbag from the Pocketful of Posies range is simply gorgeous, decorated with a delicate bird design, it has timeless appeal. Posies Washbag, £14.99

f the mere thought of Easter conjures up glorious images of fluffy chicks, bunnies, spring sunshine and heaps of chocolate, then you’re in good company because that’s exactly what we thought of too. When it comes to packing the two-week Easter break with wonderful things to do, here’s our list of the best right here in sunny Leicestershire and a few that are definitely worth the drive.

THINGS TO DO

TWINLAKES Visitors big and small can immerse themselves in a world of chocolate and discover the home of the Easter Bunny. You can venture through his burrow and discover how the chairman of chocolate, and his bunnies, get ready for Easter. Just don’t let Farmer Phil catch you… As well as the Easter Bunny’s grotto, there’s plenty to keep the kids amused. They can learn everything they need to know about becoming an Easter bunny in the Easter masterclasses, as well as trying out the new craft workshops. Oh, and essentially, there ’s the chance to find thousands of free chocolate crème eggs around the park.

KILWORTH HOUSE If you fancy a more indulgent Easter Sunday, you can’t go far wrong with a luxurious four-course Sunday lunch in Kilworth House’s stunning orangery. Lunch is served between 12.30 and 2pm, and after little ones have cleared their plates they can explore the hotel for missing chocolate eggs

and enjoy face painting and balloon modelling. Lunch on Easter Sunday is £28.95 per adult for a four-course lunch while the children’s table d’hôte menu is £20.00 per child under 12 (full payment is required at the time of booking).

GET WALKING It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Just pop some comfortable shoes on and go out and pound the pavements and you’ll be amazed at what you discover. Either explore your own neighbourhood and learn more about your community, or head into Leicester and see where your feet take you. If you need some guidance about where to start, take a look at the Visit Leicester website which has some great guided walks. Or if you want to walk with a purpose, give geocaching a whirl. Hugely popular, geocaching involves hunting for hidden treasure (in the loosest sense) and sharing your experience. It’s incredibly easy to get started and is crazily addictive, just log onto www.geocaching.com.

CONKERS As always, Conkers have laid on plenty of activities during the Easter holidays to keep children, old and young, amused. Alongside the usual 120 acres of forest, indoor and outdoor play and interactive exhibits, there’s also the a variety of shows taking place include the Wizards Whirlwind show, Dippy the Clown, Trevor Hill and his animal show and Pirate Pat. There’s daily ranger activities including sensory art, outdoor adventures and bushcraft, as well as daily craft activities, all Easter themed.

CURVE When it comes to taking the family to the theatre, you’re spoilt for choice this Easter courtesy of the fantastic family programme of events at Curve. For teens, you can’t go wrong with The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾. Most mums and dads will have grown up familiar with the tale of the misunderstood intellectual, and here ’s the chance to introduce him to a new generation. This musical has an infectious score and a script which stays true to the original novel.

Admission to the museum is free but there is a small charge for the Easter activities and train ride.

BLENHEIM PALACE While it might be a drive away, a trip to Blenheim at any time really is worth the effort. The palace itself is stunning while the grounds offer enough space for the most energetic of kids to exhaust themselves. From 3-6 April there’s plenty to do, with a traditional Easter Egg Hunt around the Pleasure Gardens, with clues to be solved and

Party

… o It’s their t t n a w I f i and I’ll cr y Our at-a-glance survival guide for planning a birthday party

T

he days of low-key birthday parties held at home with a handful of friends, musical chairs and sausages on sticks seem to be long gone. But fret not, hosting a birthday party doesn’t mean you need to turn into an events organiser overnight. Follow our guide for planning the perfect party without the rocketing stress levels, and budget.

P Firstly, spread the word. If you’re friends

least because other parents can see whose party it is), remember that anything addressed to a child in an envelope is guaranteed to fill them with delight. There are lots At our last party, we went for that you can create yourself and print sweet cones from out easily – if your party is themed, Nelly B’s Sweet Shop set the scene with the invite.

in Broughton Astley. Fantastic service with a smile and the cones were an enormous hit with ever yone, work ing out far more reasonable than a traditional party ba g.

P Always ask about allergies or dietary

requirements. It saves a nightmare on the day trying to find a gluten-free sandwich or work out whether treats are nut-free.

wonderfully nostalgic but the reality can be anything but. Cake trodden into the carpet and children stampeding around the house isn’t many parents’ idea of fun. Yes, some venues can be costly but check out church halls, village halls and sports halls which can be hired really cheaply.

you could team a party in a sports hall with a multi-sports or football theme. Or, maybe an arts and crafts party with old-fashioned party games. For jumping beans, try a bouncy castle, which can be hired for a couple of hours.

P While personalised invites are lovely (not

Some invites never make their way home never to be seen again. Every party-planning parent is thrown into a tailspin when a last-minute acceptance results in a shortage of party bags, so check with parents if you haven’t heard from them around a week before.

P The idea of a party at home is

P So what to do with all these children? Well,

with all the parents, by all means take a short cut and text with the details, but stress the need to RSVP. However, as children get older and make their own friends, written invitations are the way to go. Send them out around three weeks before.

P Don’t be afraid to chase RSVPs.

princes and princesses or general Disney films. Or just fancy dress. Parents will thank you.

P Be kind to other parents. If your little one is desperate to dress as Elsa, be mindful that other parents may not have a Frozen outfit ready to go. If you have a theme, make it as open as you can. For Frozen fans, try a winter-inspired party, or

P Or, there’s lots of companies that can provide the entertainment, such as musical parties with games and singing, or lookalikes who’ll come and play themed games, captivating their audience. How about a petting zoo, a collection of creepy-crawlies, science experiments, a magician or donkey rides? Let’s be honest, these days, the list is endless. P Let’s not forget the cake. It doesn’t

have to be home baked unless you take pleasure in baking and decorating. While there are lots to choose from at the supermarkets, if your little one has a very particular idea of the kind of cake they’d like, find a local cake maker to create your masterpiece, such as Butterfly Cakes and Bakes facebook.com/ButterflyCakesandBakes.

P Handing out party bags is the perfect way

to bring a party to a close, and you’re spoilt for choice. Sweet cones are a real crowd-pleaser. Or you could go old-school with party blowers, bubbles and balloons or reflect your theme with tiaras, eye patches or a mini paint set. Or go green with a grow-your-own set of seeds or a little plant? Add some cake and a cheery ‘thanks for coming’ and you’re done. Bravo.

The best of the If you thought your festivalgoing days were over, think again thanks to the rise in popularity of family-friendly events

30

T

here was a time when festivals were for the likes of those who were footloose and fancy free, but, no more. While Glastonbury may be a truly terrifying thought

for many of us with young ’uns in tow, there are now plenty of family friendly festivals taking place throughout the summer. Here’s our round-up of the best places to pitch your tent:

PARENTING

THREE WISHES FAERY FEST 20–22 June, Mount Edgcumbe, Torpoint, Cornwall Delight your little elves with this award-winning festival which offers music, walkabout fairytale performers, camping, workshops and activities all based around the theme of fairies. This year, there’s even a Fairy World Record attempt, you just need wings and a wand to take part. Now in its eighth year, this festival offers something for everyone and is described as ‘magical’. faeryevents.com

LATITUDE

16–19 July, Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk

CAMP BESTIVAL

30 July–2 August, Lulworth Castle, Dorset A huge section of the festival site is devoted to kids, big and small. They can learn circus skills and get giddy on bikes, go-karts, bouncy castles and fairground rides. There’s a dedicated toddler area, soft play, sandpits, facepainting, even a kids catwalk and chill-out zone. The entertainment always features great things for little ones to enjoy, and there’s a Dingly Dell for families to explore together. Oh, and great music for the grown ups to enjoy. This year’s line up includes Kaiser Chiefs, Professor Green, Bob Geldof and Soul II Soul. campbestival.net

GREEN MAN

It’s no surprise that Latitude has won so many awards as ‘UK’s Best Family Festival’. There’s a huge array of familyfriendly activities for children and parents. The dedicated Kids’ Area ensures little ones are entertained all day and into the night with pond-dipping, stargazing, French knitting and bushcraft skills to name just a few activities on offer. Brilliantly, they have a separate section of ‘in betweener’ activities for teens, ranging from art classes, DJing and photography. The music’s always a hit with parents too – last year’s line up included Lily Allen, Editors, The Black Keys and Damon Albarn. latitudefestival.com

20–23 August, Crickhowell, Brecon Beacons, Wales Green Man claims to have an unrivalled children’s area, with fancy dress, spin painting, hedgerow walks, storytelling, creative writing, inflatables, rides, board games, toy-making, flag-making, football, and that’s just for starters. There are workshops in everything from puppet making to photography. For teens, there’s a super cool adultfree adventure zone, and for grown ups, there’s plenty to see and do, with a strong focus on great music. greenman.net

BEAUTIFUL DAYS

21–23 August, Escot Park, Devon Organised by The Levellers, Beautiful Days focuses on children and their families, with hands-on workshops and entertainment all weekend long for all ages. With crafts, theatre, dressing up, circus skills, rides, story telling, music, comedy, this festival sells out every year. beautifuldays.org

JUST SO

21–23 August, Rode Hall Parkland, Cheshire Described as a ‘magical weekend of creative adventures’, Just So offers pirate training, fairy houses, journalism school, sea shanties, pillow fights, lantern making, laughter competitions, sports, campfire stories, baby yoga and a lantern parade. Even the bands are chosen because the organisers think families will love to dance to them. justsofestival.org

JAMIE OLIVER’S THE BIG FEASTIVAL

28–30 August, Chipping Norton, Cotswolds The Big Feastival was born when Jamie Oliver and Blur’s Alex James decided to combine live music with food, cookery workshops, vintage funfair rides, story telling, dance lessons and so much more. The music line up is usually pretty impressive, last year Fatboy Slim headlined. The organisers have thought of lots of things to make life easier for families with little ones, including farm animals to cuddle, crafts to get stuck into and utterly brilliant wagons with canopies and cushions perfect for them to snooze in. jamieoliver.com/thebigfeastival

SPOTLIGHT ON… NEST

Homes are where her heart is

F

or many of us, it’s all too easy to stick with the day job and the security it offers and never follow our dream. However, sometimes an opportunity pops up just at the right time and before you know it, you’re achieving everything you ever wanted. For Sara Quatermass, this is exactly what’s happened. Having worked in estate agency for 18 years and won countless industry awards, she’d resisted the urge to set up on her own. “I’ve always been passionate about the job and had dreamed of running my own agency,” says Sara. “I’d never had the courage or felt it was quite the right time. One day, everything aligned and it was time to take that leap of faith.” Sara joined forces with Robert Taylor, who already owned a successful agency, to launch nest, a local estate agency which prides itself on delivering the personal touch. And her faith is paying off. After opening the first Blaby branch less than 12 months ago, nest has just opened a second branch in Enderby and its distinctive duck-egg blue For Sale signs are appearing everywhere. “We hadn’t planned to expand so early, but the business was doing brilliantly and we

spotted an opportunity and seized it,” she admits. “If you believe in what you’re doing, you just need to have guts and take chances.” So what is the secret to nest’s success? Well, for Sara it’s all about going above and beyond when it comes to her customers. “I firmly believe that when I take on a house, I become part of that family’s life,” she says. “I know that when you put your house up for sale, your entire life goes on hold and it’s easy to underestimate what an impact that has. We aren’t selling houses, we’re selling homes. We’re helping people to build their dreams.” And Sara really does deliver on this promise, whether it’s ensuring that viewings aren’t booked when she knows little ones will be in bed, or offering invaluable insight into the different villages, schools, public transport, and even recommending good restaurants. “People are at the heart of this business, and our aim is to make it a smooth, stress-free experience,” she says. On top of running nest, Sara is also a mum to two sons, Jake, 25 and Will, 11. “I’m constantly juggling,” she laughs. “I’m very fortunate that I have a wonderful husband and a brilliant team in the office so I’m supported both at home and at work – they’re my backbone. Their brilliant support means I’m able to deliver the best I can to our customers.” nest, 1a Lutterworth Road, Blaby, Leicester (Tel 0116 277 2277) and 22a Cross Street, Enderby, Leicester (Tel 0116 286 9100). nestestateagents.co.uk
