As parents of three children, we’ve long been on the lookout for a magazine that covered the things that mattered most to us as a family. As it didn’t exist, we’ve created Two Point Four and we hope that other families will enjoy it too. Two Point Four is for parents of pre-school and school-age children right here in south Leicestershire. And, while the focus is on family life, it’s not just about the children. We’re keen to cover the things that matter most to you, from healthy living to juggling the work/life balance or taking time for yourself. As half term approaches, check out our essential guide to places to go and things to do, come rain or shine. There are great suggestions right on the doorstep and further afield. Turn to page 18 for tips on how to keep everyone smiling all week long. We also explore the benefits of ‘me time’. As working parents, the very idea of time alone has us drooling, yet it seems as elusive as snow on Christmas Day. If you’re feeling frazzled by the daily routine and want to restore your inner calm, turn to page 29 for some quick wins. We really hope you enjoy this first issue and look out for the next one in December.

he bright idea of three local mums has really paid off as Stomp, which sells fabulous, fashionable, professionally fitted children’s shoes, celebrates its first birthday. The store first opened in October 2013 when three mums from Narborough and Littlethorpe decided to provide an alternative to the high street when it came to children’s shoes. Lucy Boyle, Debbie Evans and Rebecca Simpson have nine children between them which has meant a lot of time spent shopping for shoes. “When we were buying our own children’s shoes, we were frustrated with the lack of choice available and we knew we were spending a lot of money on something we didn't like," said Lucy. “Listening to other mums we knew we weren't the only ones looking for stylish, good-quality shoes, so we decided to do something about it,” said Rebecca.

Have KIDS, will TRAVEL The majority of parents with more than one child will all have faced the same dilemma at some point. When it comes to choosing a car, do you go for practicality or elegant design? However, hallelujah for the brand new BMW 2 Series Tourer which brilliantly combines the two. Offering plenty of space and some fab family-friendly features including a sliding rear seat to adjust boot space and a wide-opening tailgate, it's also impressively efficient, economical and sporty too. Who knew you could get all of this in a family car?

And Stomp has been a runaway success, gaining a great reputation not just for the fantastic range but for the personal service the trio deliver. “We've been delighted with the response,” said Debbie. “We love what we do, and it’s wonderful that so many local families love it too.” Stomp, 2 Station Road, Narborough LE19 2HR or visit facebook.com/stomp

A treasure trove of all things beautiful, classic and quirky, Narborough Hall has the solution for every potential gift-giving nightmare. And, as the festive season creeps closer, the store opens its Christmas room on 18 October. “We absolutely love Christmas which is lucky as we’ve been working on this year’s festive range since January,” smiles buyer Sophie. “We always want to source distinctive products for our customers to treasure year after year and I think this is our best collection yet.” “Last year, more than 1,500 customers came to our preview evenings,” says owner Simon Edwards. “And this year we think it's more spectacular than ever before.”

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE

When children went back to school in September, there was a noticable absence of lunch boxes thanks to Universal Free School Meals, which provides children in reception and Years 1 and 2 with a free school meal. Interestingly, a study carried out in 2009 and 2011 showed that children who were given healthy free school lunches were two months ahead academically compared to their packed-lunch peers. They tried new foods and experienced new tastes, resulting in a 25% increase in the munching of veggies and a reduction of 18% in the crunching of crisps.

he statistics above make for horrifying reading. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that children who read well do better at school, get better exam results and go on to do better in their careers. And those children who develop a passion for books will have had the door opened to a whole world of new discoveries and interests. Reading not only nurtures a curiosity about the things around them but also fires their imagination with knowledge and creativity. Put simply, reading is a life skill that can only help children develop and thrive. For toddlers, being read to encourages their command and understanding of language while for older children, reading helps to develop essential skills such as communication, thinking and logic, concentration and discipline.

The message is clear – too many children are leaving primary school each year still lacking in confidence when it comes to reading, despite the best efforts of great teachers. So what can we as parents do to encourage our little ones to become book worms?

SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD

The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s largest reading programme for primary school children. Created by The Reading Agency, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge inspired more than 800,000 children to join their local library and read at least six books. To get your children hooked on books, we’ve done our homework and here’s Two Point Four’s lowdown on the best reads around.

FOR AGES 0 –5 Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler A genuine delight for little ones (and for parents to read), discover what happens when a witch has her hat blown off and she, her frog and her cat head off to retrieve it. The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters by Allan Ahlberg, illustrated by Janet Ahlberg A real family favourite with pull-out pieces of post to discover, children can join the jolliest postman on his round as he delivers letters to the residents of a fairytale town. Would You Rather? by John Burningham Full of quirky ideas that children will love, this wonderful picture book is great fun to share with

children. They'll squeal in disgust when faced with the decision to either drink snail squash or eat mashed worms, and to help a witch make a stew or tickle a monkey.

FOR AGES 6 –8 The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton A children’s classic first published in 1939, a new edition has been published updating the story but retaining the magic. When Joe, Beth and Frannie move into a new home, they discover a mysterious wood on their doorstep. Soon, they discover that it’s actually the Enchanted Wood, home to a wonderful Faraway Tree, strange new lands, spells and characters. The Huge Bag of Worries by Virginia Ironside, illustrated by Frank Rodgers A fascinating picture book written by one of Britain’s leading agony aunts that can be used to talk to children about worries. Wherever Jenny goes, her worries follow her in a big blue bag. They’re aways there, when she goes swimming, when she watches TV, and even

15

when she is in the loo, but how can Jenny get them to disappear? The Huge Bag of Worries has sold more than 140,000 copies so far. Minecraft: The Official Construction Handbook If your son or daughter is obsessed with the communitybuilding game, you can’t go wrong with this book full of handy hints and top tips to construct houses, bridges, ships, floating islands and even rollercoasters. There’s nothing that can’t be built in Minecraft, and this book will help your child to quickly become a master builder.

FOR AGES 9–11 The Boy Who Biked The World by Alastair Humphreys Any wannabe adventurer will be swept along on Tom’s travels as he leaves England, cycling through Europe and all the way through Africa. The story of an adventurous boy who thinks that there must be more to life than school is captivating with illustrations and journal entries. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer A hilarious, exciting adventure story which sees 12-year-old criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl, hatching an ingenious plot to steal all the gold in fairy land. Although a little dubious about the plan, mainly due to a lack of belief in the existence of fairies, his trusty companion Butler is on hand to help.

movie madness! If your family has a favourite movie, get your hands on the book to tempt even the most reluctant bookworm Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

of flour which must be looked after for three weeks. Simon becomes unusually attached to his flour baby and quickly begins to appreciate some of the sacrifices his mother has made for him as a single parent. A real favourite of classrooms and homes everywhere.

FOR AGE 12 UPWARDS The Maze Runner by James Dashner When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he’s not alone, he’s surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade – a walled encampment at the centre of a terrible stone maze. None of the boys know why or how they came to be there or what’s happened to the world outside. Northern Lights by Philip Pullman The first in Philip Pullman’s truly sensational His Dark Materials trilogy. Guaranteed to intrigue and excite young readers, Lyra and her animal daemon live among the scholars of Jordan College, Oxford. However, the destiny that awaits her will take her to the magic frozen lands of the Arctic where she will discover the truth about her identity among witch-clans and ice-bears. Revolver by Marcus Sedgwick This incredibly clever and tense thriller won the Booktrust Teenage Prize. When Sig Andersson is held hostage in his family’s cabin, he realises his dead father had an untold story that he, Sig, must piece together, and all while there’s a gun pointing at his head.

PARENTING

Make half term happy •

So, five whole days without packed lunches to make, children to chivvy out the door and uniforms to wash, clean and iron. Sounds great, doesn’t it? We know the reality isn’t quite that easy so here’s Two Point Four’s round up of the best days out to keep everyone smiling

18

W

hile it may only seem like yesterday that your little darlings trooped off to school for the beginning of a new school year, October is already here and half-term is looming. Being free from the usual routine of cajoling children to get up, get dressed and eat breakfast before hurrying them out the door can feel like a blessed relief. Until, of course, you realise that you need to keep the little darlings happy, entertained and stimulated for the duration of the week. We reckon that life is easier if you plan ahead and can schedule in some treats and trips. It could be something simple, like taking your little ones for a swim or a walk to the nearest park, but we’ve suspect that as children get older, they get a little more demanding when it comes to ‘fun’ ways to spend the day. So we’ve done the research for you and here’s our suggestions for some great ways to spend the half-term break, with places right on your doorstep and a little further afield.

OUT AND ABOUT

Playdates are a great way to win friends at the school gate, particularly if you’re the one looking after the children as the other parent heads off happily to the gym or back home to relish the silence. Find games and toys that your child hasn’t played with for a while or can’t play alone and fingers crossed, you should be able to leave them to play while you indulge in a quick cuppa and put your feet up. Until they fall out, that is!

OUT AND ABOUT

Right on the doorstep Muddy puddles, making dens, running races and climbing trees. What could be better for letting off steam than being in the great outdoors? In Leicestershire, we’re blessed to be surrounded by some great outdoor spaces. Regardless of where you’re heading, the majority of parks and commons have play areas where the small folk are happy to explore while you sip on a flask of tea and grab five minutes’ peace. No? Nah, we didn’t think so either…

FANCY SOMEWHERE NEW TO TRY? HOW ABOUT ONE OF THESE…

B Forest, Beacon Hill is the second

highest-point in Leicestershire at 814m high. (And yes, we know what you’re wondering, the highest point is Bardon Hill, near Coalville, which started life as a volcano…) If the whopping 335 acres of woodland, wildflower meadows and farmland isn’t enough, Beacon Hill is also the site of a Bronze Age hill fort and there are incredible wooden sculptures dotted around for you to find. Add to that an extensive network of paths, walking routes and brilliant natural wood play areas and you’ve got a great destination to blow off the cobwebs, run the kids ragged and, if you give it some welly while you’re walking, you’ll have walked off the calories of a cake. Probably. Beacon Hill, Upper Car Park, Beacon Road, Woodhouse Eaves, Loughborough, LE12 8SP

While it may sound less than exciting to visit a canal, Foxton Locks is actually a wonderful slice of tranquility. With the largest flight of staircase lock on the English canal system, Foxton has miles of towpaths to walk with tearooms and local pubs serving food. There are canal-side spy trails for children to follow and, providing you’ve asked nicely, you just might be allowed to help open the locks for the boats as they navigate their way through. At Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park you can visit an exhibition about the battle and walk the 2.2km battlefield trail with audio and visual information explaining more about what happened in 1485. And during half term, there are falcon, hawk and owl displays. So history, exercise, beautiful views and rather large birds. Win win. If your children need to let off steam and the weather means a jaunt in the fresh air is out of the question, head to your local indoor play centre. They can scream, twist and bounce their way around all manner of slides, climbing frames and play equipment. While your ears may be ringing, at least they’ll be exhausted by dinner time. We’ve put it to the test and 360 Play never fails to deliver. children’s imagination is the unashamed focus on sewerage. Kids can practice flushing toilets, a skill which they seem incapable of mastering at home, and then follow a flushed poo along clear pipes down to the sewer. And it’s free entry, except for activities which run throughout the year. So they learn stuff, talk about poo and it’s free. What’s not to love? Shake a LEG

A

re your children getting an hour’s worth of exercise every day? Yep, the recommended amount of exercise for children is 60 minutes a day. For some energetic busy bees, it’s getting them to sit still for an hour that’s the real challenge, but recent research shows that only one in five children aged 5-10 achieves a full hour of physical activity a day. This could be running in the playground, swimming lessons, riding their scooter or playing football in the park, just as long as they’re moving. With smartphones, tablets, games consoles and a vast array of kids’ TV channels to choose from, it’s hardly surprising that so many children are turning away from playing outside in favour of the comforts of home. In fact, almost 40% of children aged 5-10 now do less than 30 minutes of activity each day. It’s clear that not all children want to ride a bike or kick a ball in their spare time, so how can we get them

26

Why it’s so important for your child to keep moving

moving? Setting them a great example by exercising yourself helps, so exercise is part of normal family life. Taking the kids for walks in the park, games of frisbee and energetic bouts of hide and seek are great at weekends, but during the week, there’s not always time. Luckily, the latest Change 4 Life campaign could help with some quick wins. The 10-minute Shake Up encourages children to get active in 10-minute bursts with a stopwatch, Disneyinspired games, stickers and wall chart to track their progress. But critically, it’s all about fun. And James Longmore, General Manager of David Lloyd, Narborough agrees. “For children to really embrace exercise, they have to enjoy it,” he says. “We offer a wide range of activities, from multisports, swimming and tennis to football, kwik cricket and street dance so there’s something for virtually every child.” And exercise isn’t just about the health benefits. “Having a place to go as a family where everyone can do something they enjoy is great,” he agrees. “As children get older, it’s easy for the family unit to start breaking up. Older children retreat to their rooms or spend time online or with friends. By having an activity that the whole family enjoy, such as swimming, tennis, or using the gym, the whole family benefit and the unit stays stronger.” To find out more, visit www.nhs.uk/ Change4Life/ or download physical activity factsheets from NHS Choices: nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/physicalactivity-guidelines-for-children.aspx

PARENTS’ LIFESTYLE

ME

Why thinking ‘me me me’ isn’t selfish, it really is the best thing you can do for your family

I

t’s a story virtually every parent knows. From the moment that tiny helpless scrap is placed in your arms, your needs suddenly come much further down the list of your priorities. From the endless feeding, changing and swaying of the first year until they’re moving out, parenting, with all its highs and lows, is unquestionably exhausting. The relentless clothes washing, ballet classes, homework, birthday parties and scraped knees are enough to keep anyone busy, but chuck in a career, a house and countless other commitments to juggle alongside and, well, it’s no surprise that so many parents feel like their battery is flat. While our kids’ needs are right at the top of the list, if you overlook your own needs you run a real risk of running on empty.

first It’s essential that we recharge our batteries, not just to boost our own wellbeing but so we’re better equipped to deal with whatever the day throws at us. It may feel like a luxury but actually, it’s far from it. “Me time is a necessity that needs to be prioritised for the health of your mind, body and soul,” agrees Lucinda Button, founder of Mindful Mamas, a coaching company for mums feeling overwhelmed and stressed. “Parenthood can be a hugely demanding time. We are all human and can only take so much before something short circuits. Think of yourself as an engine and time for yourself as an oil. You wouldn’t expect an engine to run if it was dry.” And time out means you feel so much better and everyone benefits. This goodness spreads like wildfire to your children, partner, friends and family and before you know it, it’s like a circle of loveliness. And yes, I know, it often feels like there’s just no time left once you’ve ticked all the boxes of daily family life. Even if you’re only dealing with the basic ones such as making sure everyone is clean (enough), fed and where they should be, it can feel like there’s nothing left at the end of the day.

29

PARENTS’ LIFESTYLE

Even the craziest of schedules can be tweaked for you to take some time out. Here are our tried-and-tested tips for staking your claim to a well-earned breather

with a cuppa, but it means you can enjoy those spontaneous moments for den making or book reading which can easily get lost when you have a To Do list as long as your arm.

FOCUS ON THE PRESENT

BABY STEPS If your calendar resembles a military operation, don't aim for a whole weekend. Start small and set your sights on carving out 10 minutes a day just for you, and let it grow from there. After all, doing something is better than doing nothing, right? If it's only time that’s stopping you, look closer. What has to get done before you can take a break? Focus on the task in hand by ignoring distractions – turn off email and Facebook and put your phone on silent. If you have a long list, tackle the toughest first. Get the essentials done and dusted, then you can focus on you.

ASK FOR SUPPORT Asking for help is not a weakness. It doesn’t mean you can’t cope. Take up friends and family on their offer to have the kids for a playdate or to give you a break. Enjoy that time and then feel refreshed to return the favour. Maybe.

BOOK IT IN When you’re planning the week ahead, remember to book in a slot for you. It doesn’t matter what you do, just make sure that time is yours. You wouldn’t skip your child’s swimming lesson, so treat this with the same importance. And, while your calendar’s to hand, look at pencilling in some time with the kids where you have nothing to do and nowhere to go. Not only does this give you chance to collapse

Life is infinitely easier when you can focus on one thing at a time. By concentrating on the present moment, you bring all of your energy and creativity to whatever you’re doing at the time. So, when you have your 10 minutes or more, shut off everything else and just focus on yourself.

JUST SAY NO It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling selfish when you prioritise time for yourself over other things, but remember, you have the authority to decide how you spend your time. Don’t always default to putting yourself last. Think about what’s going to be most beneficial to you and your family. Be brave, you’re allowed to say no.

EARLY RISER? If you’re a morning person, could you get up earlier, grab a cup of tea and start the day with some quiet time alone? While you may struggle to get a hair appointment at 6am, you could start the day with a book, a workout DVD or a run.

GO WITH A FRIEND If you tend to make plans but life then gets in the way, think about making a date with a friend – you’re far less likely to cancel.

Lucinda Button is a life coach, soul mentor and founder of Mindful Mamas. Lucinda’s work draws on many aspects of personal development including life coaching, mindfulness and self care. Mindful Mamas: 07908 845730 or mindfulmamas.co.uk

Five quick wins Book an appointment to have your hair done Hot drink, magazine and no demands on your time. What could be more blissful?

30

Take an exercise class or go to the gym Release those feelgood endorphins and, if you can squeeze a little extra time, grab a coffee afterwards.

Indulge in a beauty or massage appointment It doesn’t matter what you treatment you choose, just head to a nearby salon, switch off and restore your inner calm.

Take a walk You don't need to don your walking boots, just plug in some headphones, lose yourself in some feel-good music and breathe in the fresh air.

See your friends – go for a drink, dinner or just pop to someone’s house. Putting the world to rights over a coffee can make almost everything better.

SPOTLIGHT ON… MADE BY OLIVY

ON THE

ucy Higham only began her business, Made by Olivy, earlier this year when what started off as a creative sideline suddenly became a real-life success story. Made By Olivy specialises in producing handmade bespoke gifts for children, with a firm focused on sensational superhero capes, masks, belts and cuffs that have really captured the imagination of her fans, big and small. Lucy, from Stoney Stanton, worked for years as a knitwear designer, designing clothes for the high street, and lectured in knitwear design before having Olivia, 6, and Ivy, nearly 2, so it’s clear that her creativity is second nature. “Doing crafty projects has always been a great way for me to switch off and relax,” she says, which is how the business began. When one of her friends needed to find an outfit for her son for a birthday party, Lucy made him a superhero cape and mask. The outfit was such a hit that she then made one for the whole

We all dream of turning our passion into our livelihood, and one local mum has done just that

family for another party. The bright capes caught the eye of a friend of a friend who then wanted one for her daughter and Lucy quickly realised that this could be the beginning of a business. “On the advice of a fellow business-mum, I created a Facebook page and to my amazement, Made By Olivy just took off,” she explains. “Within a few days, I had hundreds of likes and a long list of orders and word just keeps spreading. Although I’ll extend my range in time, the capes are so popular I need to focus on them right now.” And, while Lucy is happy to work around the needs of her family she also has a strong vision of how she’d like to develop the business in the future. “Right now I’m building the foundations so that I can expand as the girls grow up and I have more time,” she says. “I love making the capes and that, combined with being able to do every school drop off and pick up, feels like the perfect balance.” To find out more about Made By Olivy, check out facebook.com/madebyolivy
