frica’s not for sissies’! Any Mom will confirm that the responsibilities of Motherhood, as joyous as they may be, are often quite overwhelming. Being a Mom in Africa probably adds a touch more drama here & there, after all Mom’s have raised an entire continent of ‘not-sissies’! Moms are magic and manage to make sure everyone has everything they need, seldom forgetting a single thing! When Dad decides it’s a good idea to take Mom’s most precious and prized possession for a camp out in the African bush, which offers all measures of dangers lurking around every corner, a level of angst does grip Mom’s stomach! The truth is that South African’s generally love the outdoors, and the rougher the better, for some. Camping makes a lot of sense! It’s an inexpensive family activity and accommodates a tight budget. It’s a wholesome option giving kids time outside away from screens, homework and the demands of after-school activities. The truth is that camping gives the whole family a chance to be a kid! We’ve sourced some tips on how to make camping an enjoyable and comfortable experience – even in the African bush!
Pick your spot with care. Some campgrounds are well developed and have ablution facilities, running water and braai’s. These sites are usually best for first-time campers, or if you’re not really a camper, but want to camp anyway! Research your options properly to make sure that you find the right camping spot which matched the kind of experience you want to have. Consider your family’s needs, for example you may have very young children and so camping next to an open body of water, or high drop-offs is probably not a very safe choice.

your tent door goes a long way to keeping your tent fairly clean from mud and grass. Don’t forget a washing line-rope to hang out those wet towels to dry nicely in the sun. Quick meals are easily achieved when you prepare in advance. Chop those veggies & seal them in a Tupperware or Zip-lock plastic bag before the time. Mix pancake batter and store it in a container, do the same with meat marinade. Don’t forget that you will probably be roasting marshmallows over the coals once the real food is eaten, so be sure to buy some long wooden sosatie sticks for this!
Safety is always a Mom’s biggest worry. Involve the kids in every aspect of the trip. Camping is arguably one of the most fun
things children can do and they look forward to the experience with uninhibited glee. If you include them in the planning process it will keep them enthusiastic. Take them shopping for the food, and let them chose their own treats for the trip. If they’re old enough to sleep in their own tent, have a ‘practice run’ in the garden with them putting up their own tent. Have them pack their own bags (with your supervision of course!), and help them chose a special toy or activity to take along. When you arrive at the camp site, have them help unpack, pitch tents & get their bed sorted out. Try to let them make their own decisions as far as possible (even if they’re not completely perfect). Involving kids in the whole process will teach them a few life skills, like planning, team work and responsibility.
Stock-up on your first-aid kit by visiting the pharmacy, and remember to include some medication too. As soon as you have set-up camp it’s best practice to take a walk around the site together and establish rules and boundaries immediately. For younger children use landmarks to help them remember where your camp site is, in case they wander off without you noticing. Take the opportunity to remind them about snakes, bees, scorpions and not easting any berries or fruit, if you notice any thorn trees and bushes be sure to point them out. Always practice proper fire safety around the camp fire, and having your children help you build the fire may help them to understand the dangers of fire and have more respect for it. Check for ticks at bath time and equip kids with a whistle in case they get lost or injured and cannot come to you. Play all day and as well into the night as you can manage. This is a time to build memories that your
children will never forget, they are priceless. Spend as much time together doing fun things. Besides physical activities, like walking, fishing, cycling and swimming also plan for some less intensive activities. Pack a deck of cards, Pictionary is an awesome family board-game and take some story books. You may think that there’s no room for that iPad or Smartphone during a camp-out, but these can be pretty useful! There are some great Apps in cyberspace, like Sky View to track stars. Stalk-the-lantern is a favourite with children, and planning a basic treasure hunt for them to gather things around the camp will keep them busy for some time too.
Camping produces life-long memories for children, conjuring up an almost magical time of
their life. They meet new friends, spend undistracted time with their siblings and parents, and studies have shown that children who play in a natural environment are more likely to invent their own games. So, get over the dirt factor and accept the kids will probably need a Savlon-bath scrub down after each day, all you need to do is see if you can ‘out-fun’ them! you by... Make a list and pack early. There are many on-line sources where you will find ready-made check-lists for camping with children. Try www.wildernessforkids.com. You can edit the list to suit your own needs of course. Begin packing early, at least a few days before the trip. Have a designated area where you will place all the items as they are ticked-off. By working through your list a few days before the time, you will have time to check that everything is in working order. You may have forgotten that the coolerbox leaks, or the torches need new batteries, or the sleeping bag’s zip is broken, and the blow-up mattress has a puncture. Remember to involve the kids in the packing process & go through your list at least twice! Proper gear takes camping to the next level. Think about the activities you will do and have
the right gear for that. Camelbacks are excellent for hiking and cycling holding a good amount of water, keeping it fairly cool and having it on your back with your hands free can’t be more convenient. Make sure your mattresses are comfortable, and take your favorite pillow too, this will ensure a good nights comfortable sleep after an active day. Make sure your tent has a full coverage rain-fly to keep you snug and dry in case is rains. A groundsheet & little mat outside Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za

he beauty of the Scout programme is that it is community based and owned and serves the needs of the particular community. There are 5 districts within the Mpumalanga area namely: • East District (around Nelspruit, White River and Barberton) • West District (around Witbank, Secunda and Middleburg) • Inyamazane District (the rural area to the East of Nelspruit) • Nsikazi District (the rural area to the East of White River and Hazyview) • Nkomazi District ( the area along the borders of Mozambique and Swaziland) • Hazyview District (the area between White River, Hazyview and the Kruger National Park)
choose to take part in outdoor learning activities and adventures, exposing those children to experiences they would not normally find in the city. Scouting in Mpumalanga caters for all these needs. In February every year every member can join in the BP weekend camps and in September the Area hosts the annual Cub and Scout summer camps. Summer camp has grown from strength to strength over the years and includes an exciting and varied programme filled with the learning of new skills as well as a lot of fun. The area has an adult leader training team which provide a variety of training courses throughout the year, both on the basics of Scouting as well as advanced skills training such as first aid and camping.
Mpumalanga is a diverse province with both big cities and very poor rural areas. Scouting in Mpumalanga caters for the youth from all these different backgrounds.
Each district arranges district events throughout the year and these include activities such as night hike, cooking competition, field days, cultural days and theme camps as well as competition camps.
There are community groups that are based in the cities as well as community rural groups based at churches and community centers. A large portion of the Scout groups in Mpumalanga are based at schools where educators of the schools are trained to be Scout leaders and the school supports the needs of the group.
Scouting in Mpumalanga and in South Africa is exciting, modern and very active and there is something for everyone, from the Cub age, to the Scouts, to the Rovers and also the adults. A movement embracing change for the good of all youth – “Timeless Values”
Rural communities can for example include service projects such as vegetable gardening and HIV/Aids education in their activities, and city groups can 46

concentration A
s the mid-year exams loom, children will write tests to measure how much they remember what they have learnt. Being able to concentrate in class is a critical step in the learning process and is fundamental for success at school. “When it comes to lack of concentration in the classroom, there are various options available to help learners to focus their attention better. The difficulty however, is knowing which one will really help your child,” says Susan du Plessis, Director of Educational Programmes at Edublox. Du Plessis explains that there are three types of attention: “When a child is easily distracted by a pencil falling off their desk or sounds outside the classroom window, they lack focused attention. Sustained attention is required to focus for long periods of time. Then there is divided attention,” says du Plessis, “which is quite similar to multi48

tasking. It’s a higher-level skill where you have to perform two or more tasks at the same time. If the task is to write a story, a learner must be able to think about their characters and plot, as well as spelling and punctuation rules that apply.” Lack of concentration is often linked to poor memory, says du Plessis. Parents may think that their child has a concentration problem, du Plessis however cautions that the root cause is often a memory problem. Working memory is the cognitive system responsible for the temporary storage and manipulation of information. Du Plessis describes three other types of memory: “If a child struggles to copy work from the board into their workbook, they struggle with visual memory. If they find it difficult to remember a number of verbal instructions, their auditory memory may be weak.”
Sequential memory, says du Plessis, is remembering the order in which events take place. There are practical cognitive development exercises that can be introduced in the context of a learning environment, which can help improve one’s memory and ability to concentrate with long-term results, says du Plessis. A research study conducted last year, showed a significant increase in focused attention among children who had participated in a Edublox cognitive development training course. The effect of such training on visual memory has also been examined in an unpublished study by Dr Jaiden May from the University of Johannesburg where children’s visual memory increased by 1.3 years after 22 hours of cognitive training. Du Plessis offers tips for parents looking for intervention programmes for their child:
“Solve the cause of the concentration problem. Avoid programmes that operate in a secluded environment. Rather choose a programme that replicates a classroom because it is at school that your child’s concentration will eventually be tested.” In-house measures that track intervention performance are not sufficient, says du Plessis. “Intervention programmes should be based upon scientific research with proven results. Improved grades on a school report card are an excellent, unbiased indicator to show that an intervention programme is working.”
“If a child struggles to copy work from the board into their workbook, they struggle with visual memory. If they find it difficult to remember a number of verbal instructions, their auditory memory may be weak.” Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za

“You are BRAVER than you believe, STRONGER than you seem, and SMARTER than you think.” - Winnie-the-Pooh
P
ick up almost any children’s story book and you’ll find characters taking off on exciting adventures – sometimes reluctantly, but usually out of natural curiosity and excitement. Our books and popular culture celebrate adventure and risk-taking. From a young age most children are born with an inbuilt motivation to master their environment. They want to explore it, learn about it and overcome it. A sense of adventure is healthy, normal and should be encouraged. Kids want adventure and risk. Nearly two thirds of children agree that they’d rather play outside than indoors, even when computers are available. In fact, some research tells us that adventure and risk are essential for kids to deal with their fears and worries in healthy ways.
Here are six reasons why we must encourage our children’s sense of adventure: 1. Curiosity and Creativity
E G A R U O C EN S ’ D L I H C R YOU SENSE OF ADVENTURE 50
Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
Most children are innately curious. They want to know things; they want to see what’s up the tree, inside the rock pool, under the house, over the hill or around the corner. And children are naturally creative. They want to bake mud pies, dam the flow of water and play with the campfire. When we foster their curiosity and love of learning, and give them opportunities to be creative, we build their personal resources, resilience, confidence and wellbeing.
2. Decision Making
Adventure guarantees opportunities to make mistakes (and learn from them) in ways that playing on the carpet in the living room doesn’t. Adventure and risk provide a chance to weigh the benefits of an activity against the risks. Proceed and get hurt, versus stay and be safe. Teaching your four-year-old child to ride a bike will help him learn when brakes are important and when he can go down a hill. He will have to decide what hills or obstacles are too big to ride down and which ones aren’t. With appropriate support and guidance a child will learn to make good decisions.
3. Learning about Emotions
Risky play helps children understand those ‘scary-funny’ feelings. When doing something ‘adventurous’ they quickly bounce from the serious, cautious emotions associated with fear to playful, activity focused emotions. For example, teaching your six-year-old child to ride a foam surfboard at the beach will help her learn how to cope with the nerves or the feeling of butterflies in her stomach as the big wave looms. She will also experience the elation of sliding down the face of the wave and standing up on the board for the first time.
4. Building Resources and Resilience
Children experience positive emotions through play and adventure which builds important social, physical, cognitive and psychological resources for future challenges. These experiences aid in the development of coping skills that develop resilience and confidence.
5. Discovering Fear
I was recently at a coffee shop with my kids where a young boy had climbed up a tall pole. He was several meters in the air, sitting on top of the pole calling out to his father. He was stuck and afraid and so high up in the air that his father could not help him. It took a long time for Dad to talk him down. The boy learned about fear that day – and about overcoming it.
6. Self-Efficiency
Children who take on adventure and risk will undoubtedly fail and hurt themselves. And they will learn. Experience is a powerful teacher. Our children’s learning will help them reach their potential; they will become more confident, and believe in their ability to do things.
Skinned knees are Ok
It’s easy to say “No”. No one wants their children to get hurt. We want them to be safe. But age-appropriate risk-taking is important – even essential – for healthy development. Saying “no” may mean our kids don’t lose skin from their knees or elbows. Saying “no” may ensure no broken bones. But when we say “no” our children also hear that we do not trust them enough to try; we don’t think that they would be able to achieve the task. But if we say “yes” (and also provide appropriate support and guidance) our children reap the benefits of physical activity and social learning. Plus they get to experience all the important feelings that come, such as exhilaration, pride, confidence, self-efficacy and self-belief and resilience from acting on their amazing sense of adventure. Skoonheid, goeie kopies & tendense
Knoppe
Essence Cleansing Wipes
Skurwejantjie
Toestand - ‘n Baie droë vel weens lae humiditeit. As jy jou hande gereeld was, gebruik eerder ‘n vloeibare ontsmettingseep, dit droog jou vel minder uit as gewone seep.
Goeie Kopie!
‘n Droë vel met knoppies
Toestand - Keratosis pilaris is ‘n genetiese kwaal en veroorsaak klein knoppies gewoonlik op die bo-arms. Soms ontwikkel knopperigheid vir die eerste keer as iemand van ‘n vogtige klimaat na ‘n droër klimaat verhuis. Oplossing - Gebruik daagliks ‘n afskilferende vogroom wat sal wegdoen met die dooie velselle wat tot die knoppies aanleiding gee. PROBEER: Clarins Moisture Rich Body Lotion, Tonic Body Polisher (body scrub) with essential oils, Clinique Sparkle Skin Body exfoliator en Deep comfort Body Moisturizer.
