Teaching your children about money can be an easy and fun experience, but most importantly its a very valuable lesson for them. Money gives people, of all ages, decision-making opportunities. Educating, motivating and empowering children to become regular savers and investors will enable them to keep more of the money they earn and do more with the money they spend. Teaching children about money involves showing them the difference between needs and wants. We all have wants, but do we really need that item? The ability for a child to understand the difference between a need and a want will create a solid financial platform for their future. You can start to instill this discipline at an early age on your weekly grocery shopping trip. Teach your child that, while there are many items in the store that they may want, they do not need all of them. Instead of saying “we can’t afford it”, tell your child that it is not in the budget; this gives them a basic understanding of budgeting. Don’t ignore those wants, however. This is a good opportunity to teach your children how to budget effectively, by managing their own money and saving for something specific that they want. What happens if you feel that the item they want is a waste of money? Provided your children have saved enough money for this specific want, it is important that they are allowed to go ahead and buy it. Finding out that it was not worth the money spent on it will start to teach them the value of money. This valuable lesson helps to create smart spending habits. By teaching your child to save before purchasing what they want, you are also showing them how to avoid utilizing credit.

riversideparkprecinct www.riversidepark.co.za

So when should we start teaching money management to children? As with many of the valuable lessons that we need to teach them; sooner rather than later is the best answer.

Most young children (3 to 5 years of age) like to accompany us on our weekly shopping trips. Although they may not really understand numbers at such an early age, it still provides an opportunity for you to discuss how much money you have to spend on that trip with them. You can also explain how you go about determining what is the best value for money on any particular item. This will start to reinforce the difference between needs and wants.

As they get a bit older, say between 6 and 12 years of age, start to provide a weekly or monthly allowance. Ensure that this allowance is a set amount, and is handed over at a consistent time of the week or month. If the allowance is paid over inconsistently, it makes it impossible for your child to budget effectively. Be careful of using the allowance for disciplinary means, by withholding it, if your child misbehaves. This can discourage your child from budgeting or saving, as they may be unsure if they will receive their pocket-money on a consistent basis. They may spend their allowance as soon as they receive it. Provide broad guidelines as to what the majority of the money can be spent on, but allow them to spend the portion that they save from their allowance at their own discretion. Additional household chores can also be undertaken to provide additional money to them. As your children become teenagers, start to involve them in the household budget discussions. This is good because they start to understand how much it costs to run a household, and how they can help to reduce those costs. Encourage education, and encourage them to start saving for bigger items which may be a necessity. Children have an amazing ability to absorb information. To teach children at a young age about money, will go a long way to ensure that their financial future is the best that it can be. CORA

NO CHEWING REQUIRED • JUST SKIN CONTACT • 100% ORGANIC • NATURAL ANALGESIC Baltic Amber has been used for centuries in Europe for it’s healing properties. Amber is one of only a handful of gems of vegetative, not mineral, origin and is warm and comfortable against the skin. What are the golden rules of buying for baby on a budget? 1. Prepare a wish list of nice but non-essential items to give to friends and relatives when they ask you what you would like. 2. Ask experienced parents what they found really useful and read our buying guides to help you decide on a purchase. 3. Assume that all gadgets and gismos are cons until proved otherwise. 4. Buy in bulk whenever you see “Buy One Get One Free” or three-for-two offers. 5. Plan ahead so you can take advantage of sales. 6. Question every purchase. Is it really essential? 7. Only buy new if there’s a safety issue involved. 8. Exchange unwanted gifts. Most shops oblige. 9. Tell the world that you want hand-me-downs. 10. Use your local library and toy library. 11. Borrow items wherever possible. 12. Buy second-hand. Information from: www.babycentre.co.uk

MOM...

help support critically ill children!

Every day, children are diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. Help is often available at specialized

government hospitals, but for many children and their families the treatment they so desperately need is out of reach because the cost of transport to these facilities is simply not affordable. Where the treatment required is not available locally, we arrange and sponsor flight or bus tickets to a suitable medical facility.

ABOUT WINGS & WISHES Wings & Wishes was established in 2006 after a group of employees from Coca-Cola Sabco (Pty) Ltd identified the need in their community and started donating their frequent flyer miles as part of an internal Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The miles were committed to facilitating the transport of critically ill children and an accompanying adult to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, or an alternative appropriate medical facility, for treatment.

10

HELP HOW CAN YOU HELP? Your Money Your donation of funds towards flight costs and essential provisions will make a significant difference in the lives of these children and their families. Funds raised are also used to provide alternative transport methods should a flight not be a suitable option. Your Miles Your donation of frequent flyer air miles, in amounts of 20 000 or 30 000, will be used to purchase air tickets.

Children supported to date since 2006

1588 Flights sponsored to date since 2006

2840 Bus trips sponsored to date since 2006

Your Mercy We provide basic essentials for the children whilst in hospital. These Mercy Packs contain pyjama’s, soft toys, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, colouring in books and pencils, and any other comfort items to make their stay in hospital more bearable. Donations towards the Mercy Packs are gratefully received. ... or... Pledge a flight As flights are requested, the bookings are made, and the cost of the flight is invoiced to the individual or company who pledged the flight. Average cost of a flight is approximately R1300.

SUKSES

SEMAS, kort vir die Engelse naam “Soroban (Abacus) Education and Mental Arithmetic System” is nou hier!

Hoe bevoordeel SEMAS my kind?

2 x

Hoe pas SEMAS in by die Skool?

Hoe skryf ek my kind in? SEMAS klasse word by deelnemende skole aangebied.

Gee jou kind ‘n voorsprong!

Hierdie selfvertroue is baie belangrik later in ‘n kind se skool loopbaan.

WISKUNDE

A REAL MOM'S VIEW ON LITTLE HOOT:

LittLe hoot has been such a wonderful addition to the Lowveld and it is always my first stop for birthday presents and those long journey distractions to make life a little easier. Finally a toy store that doesn’t crowd the shelves with plastic, noisy toys, made everywhere except South Africa. And best of all, the toys are cunningly educational.

My little boy particularly loves the wooden train tracks that fit seamlessly with his old wooden train set. He spends hours figuring out new loops and destinations. I love their huge selection of locally made toys that blend in so well with known brands such as Melissa & Doug all working together to grow our children’s little minds.

Nature’s drink with superior packaging

BREAST MILK Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, provided they have accurate information, and the support of their family, the health care system and society at large. WHO (World Health Organisation) Breastfeeding is the golden standard; it has several advantages for you as mom as well as for your baby. I cannot even begin to describe how passionate we are about the composition of nature’s superior drink, breast milk! It is not only designed to nurture your baby, but also to protect him/her from diseases. The composition of breast milk is changeable with every feed, according to the baby’s age and the mom’s nutritional status. Breast milk aids as your baby’s first immunisation, it has several cognitive and socio-economic benefits. Breastfed babies have a decreased possibility of developing allergies and dental cavities. They also benefit from appropriate jaw, teeth and speech development.

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. WHO (World Health Organisation) 16

Natalie Grobler For appointments please contact: 071 246 0357 Breastfeeding also helps with the contraction of your uterus after birth which limits blood loss. With exclusive breastfeeding, your return of fertility is delayed (it should however not be regarded as a birth control method) and an added benefit is weight loss. Moms that breastfeed tend to reach their pre-pregnancy weight much sooner. It also lowers your risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

How do I initiate

breastfeeding directly after birth?

NEWBORN AND MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY. I have a studio in Nelspruit but also do location shoots. Contact me to make a booking and find out more about my winter special.

When your baby arrives, the reality of breastfeeding may come as a shock as none of the preparation has seemed to help. The most important thing you can do is to stay relaxed, calm and trust your instincts. When your baby is born, whether it is a caesarean section or a normal birth, ask the hospital staff to ensure that your baby is brought to you within the first hour after birth. Lie on your back, make sure you are in a comfortable position, and place your baby on your chest. This way you will have excellent skin to skin contact and the baby will crawl up to your breast. Breastfeeding will be initiated with the baby automatically latching on with chin first, getting a good mouthful of breast, without any help from mom. Patience is the key to success.

HEALTHY EATING WITHIN A BUDGET

Eating healthy doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. It’s possible to make good nutritional choices without breaking the bank, and easier if you know the cost-saving tricks. Here are helpful tips for healthy eating on a budget: Plan ahead To avoid overspending and buying unnecessary items, create a monthly budget, and write your weekly grocery list based on it. Plan your meals and snacks for the week according to the established budget. Include only the meals you plan to cook that week on your shopping list. By buying only what you need, limiting frivolous purchases in the process, you will save money. Shop smart Buy groceries when you are not hungry and when you are not too rushed. Stick to your grocery list, and stay out of the aisles that don’t contain items on your list, to avoid temptation. Compare prices the right way The lowest sticker price isn’t always the best price. Instead of looking at prices, find and compare the “unit price” or “unit cost” listed on the shelf directly below the item. This will help you to determine the item with the best value. Take advantage of deals & discounts Wherever you decide to shop, scan the weekly or daily specials to check if any of the items on your shopping list are on sale. Get over brand names Avoid brand-name tunnel vision: you can often get the same or similar product for a better price. “No frills” products, which are sold without the flashy packaging or catchy slogans are generally cheaper than their full-priced, brand-name counterparts. Buy in bulk (thoughtfully) Buying non-perishable items in bulk or as family packs usually costs less. Buy easily perishable foods in small amounts to ensure that you eat them before they spoil. For some perishable items such as meat, fish and even bread, freezing and then thawing as needed is always an option that allows for buying in bulk.

Buy what’s in season Fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season are often cheaper now than during other times of the year. The local farmer’s market is a great source of fresh, seasonal produce. Go for frozen fruits & veggies If the fruits and veggies on your shopping list are out of season, buying them frozen is a great money-saving option. Frozen items have a much longer shelf-life than their fresh counterparts, so you can buy them in bulk if they are on sale and not have to worry about them going bad. Keep it simple Although it may be tempting to buy one of those convenient, pre-cut, neatly arranged vegetable or fruit party platters, they are much more expensive than buying the produce separately and cutting them yourself. Any pre-cut, pre-washed or ready-toeat vegetables are sold at steeper prices than those in their basic forms. While it may take a few extra minutes, your wallet will thank you for washing and chopping your produce at home. work with leftovers Rather than tossing leftovers, incorporate them into your next meal. Leftover vegetables can be added to a casserole or blended to make soup. Leftover or overripe fruit is perfect for making smoothies or baking. Try meatless Mondays To save money on meat and improve your health in the process, try having several meatless meals a week. Substitute a few meat meals with protein-rich beans, soya, lentils and peas. Salads and tacos stuffed with veggies, beans and low-fat cheeses, can make meatless meals more enjoyable and feel like a treat rather than a sacrifice.

Morgan and Susie Jenkins took over the reigns at Jock at a very exciting time. Not only were they recently married but Morgan and Susie have embarked on the rebranding process with passion and purpose. At the heart of the matter is their aim to simplify, and thereby improve, the Jock experience.

If you and your family are fans of the old Jock & Java, you may have noticed some changes over the past two months. This “old faithful” venue has recently seen a rebranding after the “Java” section was closed and is now simply called Jock Pub & Grill. Mom’s Notes recently enjoyed the winter sun and a chat with the new managers at Jock.

First to have been improved is the play-area. The addition of a fence around the play area allows Mom and Dad to enjoy the company of friends and family with greater peace of mind. In addition, the play-area offers a jumping castle every weekend for extra fun! Although the Java section was closed, Susie and Morgan still keenly welcome private functions – from stork teas to anniversaries, birthdays and corporate functions. Other areas around the venue have been “opened” to cater for these needs. Jock is still the perfect spot to entertain the whole family – big or small. The changes haven’t all been superficial and structural. The Jock’s kitchen has been hard at work (re)inventing and improving the Jock Menu. It now offers all the Jock classics, like the famous Slowvelder Pizza as well as truly “local-is-lekker” dishes inspired by Mozambican seafood for example. The menu will visually communicate the new Jock’s stronger ties to the history of the original legend, Jock of the Bushveld. This “going-back” to the roots of the Lowveld legend is a big part of what Susie and Morgan wanted to achieve. Susie agrees that the use of Jock, the legendary dog who trekked the corridor across the border almost 200 years ago, reminds us that “… the Jock story and his travels are part of the (local) cultural history. An icon that is loved and cherished by kids and parents alike.” Whilst enjoying the delicious gourmet “pub” fare, customers will also be able to enjoy live music, and more entertainment options such as frequent Ladies (mom) Nights, Quiz Nights and various fun family events over the weekends. When asked what they wanted to ultimately achieve with Jock, their answer is simply to ”… make customers feel that Jock is their home”. Morgan says “This place is an institution … It’s a part of Nelspruit”. As we walk out, past the friendly school of khoi in their glittering pond, Mom’s Notes is happy to report that Lowveld families can still enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere they have come to love… but now it’s even better!

style on a

shoestring

Looking your best doesn’t mean spending a fortune. Mom’s Notes embarked on finding out how Mom can look fashionable for less. We knocked on Jolene’s door (Jola at I’Langa Mall) to help us understand how to shop on a shoestring, without looking threadbare.

Jolene says that before you spend your hard earned money, take a critical look at your existing cupboard. The first step is to re-arrange your cupboard by grouping all your clothing and shoes together, pants with pants. tops with tops, sandals with sandals and boots with boots for example. This will allow you to identify what you have lots of, what you don’t have much of, and where you can invest in something different altogether – like a specific colour. The biggest mistake is to always gravitate towards the same things – perhaps it’s white blouses, or black pumps. A cupboard filled with duplicates narrows your fashion choices, and adds to that feeling that you have nothing to wear. Jolene says that – armed with a clear knowledge of what you have and don’t have, take inspiration from fashion magazines, people who’s style you love and make a list of things you would like to add to your wardrobe. Take this list with you when you shop. It will assist you in making braver choices.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to begin with the essentials. Make sure that – if you don’t have them already – you include on your list a good pair of jeans, a timeless jacket and timeless basics like a little black dress. If you are planning to spend less, spend your money on things that will last and stay in fashion for more than one season. Jolene offers a great tip and says, “… before you buy anything, make sure that you can wear it with/as part of at least 3 other outfits.” Choosing items you can mix and match is key. If you don’t have money to spend at all, get creative! An easy way to start is to play around with layering. Switch things up and down with accessories like belts, necklaces and even consider wearing a dress as a top over jeans! Don’t be timid. If you are trying to achieve a different look – go all the way. ‘n Maklike manier om die meeste van jou kas te maak is om bloot kreatief te raak. Jolene herinner egter dat as jy iets anders probeer gaan groot! The last pearl of wisdom Jolene shares with us is her view that a handbag speaks volumes about who you are. If there is one thing you can spend money on, it’s a bag that suits your personality, style and fashion outlook. This is your signature piece which will add to your confidence regardless of what you are wearing.

mom’s money do you Have a strategy?

We do

are you searcHing for personal or business financial freedom? Financial independence is a hot topic these days, especially for women. Financially independent means being able to support yourself, having your own income and being able to sustain a decent standard of living, without needing financial support from anybody else. Three steps to financial independence include: • Maintain earning ability • Take financial ownership • Knowledge Whatever age you are now, the worst thing you can do is to wait before taking action! • One in four women are on their own by the age of 64, whether through divorce or widowhood. • Eight in ten women will manage their own money at some point during their lives. • Women with retirement plans generally save 5% of their salary, versus the 15% saved by men in the same position. • Of widows living in poverty, 80% were not as poor before their husbands died. so – there’s no time like noW to make sure that, at least financially, you’ll be safe. WHat Have you got? 1. You’ll have to budget to find out. A budget establishes ahead of time where your money will go and gives you more power over your money. If you’ve got money left over at the end of the month – great! If not, guess what? That’s all the more reason to invest. You’ll need to adjust some of your spending, so that you can begin an investment plan. 2. Set priorities/goals It is always a great incentive to set priorities and/or goals for the successful planning of anything - especially financial planning.

5. Disability How will you meet your obligations if you loose your ability to earn an income? Surely, you don’t want to be a financial burden on those you love. 6. Dread disease cover Heart attacks and strokes have become significant threats for women. Furthermore, cancer statistics make dread disease cover a necessity. 7. Investment plan • Plan for your own retirement, your child’s education, or a life goal. • Creating wealth in your own name. • Explore the different solutions available to you • Understand the risks and returns • Diversifying by spreading your money among a number of different types of investments and asset classes. KnoWledge is poWer and also peace of mind Who own’s what? • Whose name is the house in? If your husband dies or becomes insolvent, will you loose your home? • Do you both have wills? Who are his beneficiaries? If he was divorced, has he changed his old will? Where are his will & other vital documents? What happens to your children should both you and your husband pass away at the same time? • What pension benefits/plans does your husband have? What assets and investments? • Do you know what is the legal structure of your marriage and the impact thereof on your financial plan?

Hopefully this will plant a seed for you to take your own, and your children’s security a little further. Don’t leave your financial plan concerns unanswered. Call me for advice that will empower you to put your financial roadmap together. Especially if you are interested in financial planning for women.

3. Emergency Fund You need to invest around 4 month’s worth of living expenses in a fund that is accessible and liquid. 4. Life cover If you have any liabilities like a bond, you need life cover. If you have dependants, you must have cover! You want to ensure that, at least, your children will be protected until they are self supporting.

What can you expect when a dynamic skin care professional from Durban and a fashion forward hair expert from Nelspruit collaborate in the Lowveld? Pure Elegance is the answer – and it’s anything but ordinary! Mom’s Notes went to meet the energetic new business partners at their shared premises in Mostert Street.

It follows that Leigh and Remano prefer to offer consultations as an integral part of their service. A new client at Pure Elegance can enjoy personal attention and advice from both sides of the beauty scale if need be, as both Leigh and Remano carry the same product lines for the benefit of the client. It seems that clients really are the first priority at Pure Elegance. Leigh tells us that they frequently make appointments out of normal trading hours for their clients’ convenience – although prior booking is essential. The Pure Elegance duo provide hair and beauty services for special events too. (In certain situations a client may even be treated to a glass of bubbly!)

Pure Elegance is, in essence, a one-stop beauty destination. Their complimentary spaces echo the unique way that experts, Remano Luyt and Leigh Bezuidenhout, approach the hair and beauty services they respectively provide. Both partners make a point of emphasising that Pure Elegance offers much more than just a quick haircut or a superficial facial. Pure Elegance is about helping clients discover their natural beauty. With Leigh and Remano’s expertise – either individually or collectively – “Pure Elegance strives to make you look your natural best,” explains Leigh.

Even though Pure Elegance stands for natural beauty, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t on the pulse of the latest trends, and hair and beauty news. Indeed, that may well be why they promote a more holistic approach to looking your best in the first place. The latest research in hair care and hair styling informs Remano’s work. Likewise, Leigh keeps herself upto-date with the latest medical research on beauty treatments, skincare products and treatements, and corrective procedures like Botox and even teeth whitening.

Remano tells Mom’s Notes that, after returning back to Nelspruit from Cape Town, he hopes to assist Lowveld clients to embrace a more natural look, by enhancing their unique features rather than blindly following the fashions. He suggests that “ladies in Cape Town, perhaps get away with less makeup and less styling because there is a greater focus on their hair and skin condition.” Leigh adds that if more attention is given to the details – like a simple eyebrow shape – a woman will instantly look better without any makeup. This means less time and less effort.

Although their knowledge and professional passion were evident throughout our conversation; the friendship between these business partners is tangible and inviting. The friendly and fun nature of their banter about local fashion, their business, and dreams for the future, explains the welcoming atmosphere apparent in everything from the décor, to the lightning and the steaming cup of coffee on the manicure table beside us. We’re fans. Mom’s Notes invites you to become one too!

ON using less & SAVING more! Even in the balmy Lowveld, the cold creeps its way into our summery open-plan homes and we find ourselves reaching deep into the back of our closets to find the jacket we haven’t worn in months. With the escalating cold comes an equally escalating electricity bill. The sun sets earlier, so the lights are turned on quicker. Our kettles are constantly boiling as we make that next cup of coffee or hot chocolate, the electric blankets are at full strength and the heaters turned to a maximum. Advice from an expert Matt Harmse, Technical Advisor for Swift Group, experts in plumbing, electrical and maintenance services in Nelspruit, says that there are a few handy and sure-fire ways of decreasing your electricity usage (and saving money) this winter, many of which people overlook. With the most recent Eskom tariff hike of 8% for the next five years being enforced onto electricity users on 1 April, and petrol and food prices on the rise, the public are feeling the financial crunch weighing heavily on their shoulders. Matt has seen first-hand the effects of steep electricity and water tariff hikes, etched on the faces of his customers as they see their hard earned money literally going down the drain. 34

“What many people don’t realise, however, is that there are easy ways of reducing both electricity and water usage,” Matt explains. Low or no cost exercises such as turning off your geyser and switching off all non-essential appliances are obvious ways to save electricity, but Matt highlights how pioneering inventions have also come into the picture. Entering the space age He suggests a number of technological innovations which have proved to be extremely effective power-saving mechanisms. Although a common feature of these “green” technologies is a high initial installation cost, Matt says that they are pretty much guaranteed to save you money in the long run. “Electricity users need to look past the price tag that they first see and focus on what they can save by actually using the product, which can often be thousands of rand.” Energy saving light bulbs are a good supporter of Matt’s reasoning.“Energy saving lamps last for up to 6000 hours, while conventional bulbs last a maximum of 1000 hours. So while you may have to fork out four times the price for an energy saving bulb, you’ll end up paying more by buying six normal bulbs over the same period of time,” Matt points out.

LED bulbs are the latest entrants into the power-saving fray. Although even more expensive than energy saving lamps, Matt says these can last for up to 30 000 hours. “It has become hugely important for manufacturers to create efficient, green technologies. South Africa is still far behind when it comes to energy saving, but technologies which have been around for years in first-world countries are now being made available to local consumers,” Matt says. Electric geysers can account for up to 50% of your electricity bill, and the eco-friendly people in the white lab coats have taken this into account too. A new heat pump developed in the United States has resulted in an up to 75% decrease in electricity used by electric geysers, while space age thermal blankets can cause a 30% decrease too. “The heat pump works in a similar manner to an air conditioner, but in reverse. Cold air is pumped out of the room, while warm air is blown onto the geyser itself, causing the water to warm up quicker. Through savings on your electricity bill, the initial costs are quickly covered and you can end up saving thousands of rand. A geyser blanket prevents heat radiating off the geyser, also resulting in better efficiency,” Matt explains. Matt is also a strong advocate of alternate sources of power, and sees big potential for South Africa to develop solar and wind energy infrastructure. “At game lodges, for example, where an electric gate can open dozens of times a day, a few solar panels on the gate can result in huge savings on electricity. In most of South Africa, we have sunshine all year round, while at the coast we have plenty of wind. Using these natural and sustainable resources, along with nuclear power, could well be the way to go in the future.” Not just saving power Matt believes that educating your children on the importance of power-saving could be one of the most valuable things you can teach them.

PLUMBING new installations | burst pipes | geysers blocked drains | valves | septic tanks | COC's

ELECTRICAL COC's | maintenance | contracts | new installations 3 phase problems | borehole pumps

MAINTENANCE fencing | steelwork | locks & doors | tiling painting | gate motors | access control

“You must understand that power saving is not just about saving power, but saving the world too. With our coal stocks rapidly decreasing, it can’t be denied that we all need to take steps to reduce the pressure on our power grids,” he stresses. Developing a family mentality for power saving is easy enough with practice. Getting into the habit of switching off lights and appliances takes only a few weeks, and can only lead to more money in the pocket. It doesn’t take much energy to save energy, and saving today could see you survive tomorrow. There are ways to beat the winter blues without seeing the numbers on your electricity meter going through the roof, so it may be a good idea to start using them. Contact Swift Group today!

MAKE YOUR OWN

PLAY DOUGH ... in 15 minutes or less

Ingredients • • • • • •

½ cup salt 1 cup plain flour 2 tbsp cream of tartar 1 cup water 1 tbsp oil Food colouring

Method

The ikatbag blog features another really awesome craft idea using cardboard (as well as several others — you should really check it out). Here, she fashions a stage using two different boxes — one as a stand and the other as a stage. Curtains are made from fabric and hung on a simple rod with rings. (Use an old bed sheet, receiving blankets or clothes you don’t wear any more for the curtains!)

Even though these are designed for a road trip, they can totally be used indoors on a rainy day. And the possibilities are endless. Chalkboard spray-painted old or cheap cookie sheets become terrific playthings — they are magnetic and your kids can draw on them with chalk. Genius! Thank the mama from Somewhat Simple for this fabulous idea.

1. Mix all ingredients together in a medium sized saucepan. 2. Stir over heat until dough is pliable. 3. Allow to cool and store in a well sealed plastic bag or container.

Recipe notes

This makes enough for 2-4 children to have a good sized lump to play with. I keep it in the fridge and it lasts for 6 months or more.

At last, a flask that actually works!

The Status & beneficial use of groundwater By Sipho Magagula, Hydrologist, ICMA

The use of groundwater South Africa’s water resources are very unevenly distributed across the country, and in arid or water-scarce areas, water supply is a constraint to social and economic development. Groundwater is a key component of the water resources of South Africa. As such it will provide much of the water required for basic needs, especially since the country’s surface water resources are unevenly distributed and cannot cope with the growing demand for water. The demand for water has increased over the years and this has led to water scarcity in many parts of the country. The situation is aggravated by the problem of water pollution or contamination

The use of groundwater, in conjunction with surface water, could form a key part of the solution to South Africa’s water crisis. South Africa is currently using between 2-billion and 4-billion m3 a year of this groundwater. Therefore there is the potential to considerably increase groundwater supplies in South Africa. Groundwater is not as easily measured as surface water, resulting in an incomplete understanding of the local hydro geological conditions and poses numerous challenges. Groundwater is used for a multitude of purposes, such as domestic, potable supply (including town water supply), irrigation for intensive horticulture and nurseries, livestock watering and for light industry (Figure 2).

Groundwater is vulnerable It is common for groundwater to be poorly managed. This is because of its invisible nature - it takes a long time to notice when it has become polluted and, unlike surface water, it has limited ability to purify itself. It is difficult, and often impossible, to restore polluted groundwater, and certainly very expensive.

The major reason for poor management of groundwater resources, however, is ignorance. Water managers lack knowledge and information about where it occurs, the importance of its protection, and how to protect it.

Groundwater Issues Certain problems have beset the use of groundwater around South Africa and the world. Groundwater crisis is not the result of natural factors; it has been caused by human actions. During the past two decades, the water level in several parts of the country has been falling rapidly due to an increase in extraction. The number of wells drilled for irrigation of both food and cash crops have rapidly and indiscriminately increased. South Africa’s rapidly rising population and changing lifestyles has also increased the domestic need for water. South Africa is heading towards a freshwater crisis mainly due to the improper management of water resources and environmental degradation, which has lead to the lack of access to a safe water supply for millions of people. This freshwater crisis is already evident in many parts of South Africa, varying in scale and intensity depending mainly on the time of the year. Intense competition among users - agriculture, industry, and domestic sectors - is driving the groundwater table lower. The quality of groundwater is getting severely affected because of the widespread pollution of surface water. Besides, discharge of untreated waste water through bores and leachate from unscientific disposal of solid wastes also contaminates groundwater, thereby reducing the quality of fresh water resources.

Importance of groundwater Groundwater is used by about two billion people worldwide; making it the single most used natural resource. The total amount of water on the earth is estimated at 1 358 million cubic kilometers. Of this total, more than 97% is sea water. An appreciable part of the world’s total water, 2%, is frozen in ice caps and glaciers. Virtually all of the remaining water is ground water. The importance of groundwater for the existence of human society cannot be overemphasized. Groundwater is the major source of drinking water in both urban and rural South Africa. Besides, it is an important source of water for the agricultural and the industrial sector. Being an important and integral part of the hydrological cycle, its availability depends on the rainfall and recharge conditions.

The main groundwater benefit is that; • it occurs widely, even in the drier two-thirds of the country where there is little or no surface water; • almost two-thirds of South Africa’s population depends on groundwater for their domestic water needs; and • essential domestic needs can be met cost-effectively from groundwater sources Groundwater also discharges as springs and seepages throughout the plateau and provides critical base flow to streams. Hence, the environmental dependencies on the groundwater resource also need to be recognized as a beneficial use.
