BUSY HANDS

Eat your words

Travel Game

To start, the first player says "I'm so hungry, I could eat an apple" (or "alligator" or "anthill"). Then the second player adds a gastronomical delight starting with the letter b: "I'm so hungry I could eat an apple and a bathtub." See if your family has what it takes to be eating xylophones and zebras.

Letter Hunting PICTURE THIS, a family outing that's great for all ages, affordable, and (shh!) educational too. Sound too good to be true? Not if you've got a digital camera and a sharp eye for letter shapes. This adventure challenges you and the kids to find the whole alphabet, hidden in the world around us. Read on for tips on staging your own successful letter quest as well as for craft ideas to help you showcase your alphabet finds. MAKE A CHECKLIST A must-have! Make list of the letters you need before getting started. Plus, when spotting different versions of a letter, record them on the list. PURSUE DIFFERENT AVENUES Visit a mix of spots around town. For example, after pounding the pavement on Main Street, go over to a leafy park. Playground equipment offer great shapes for letters, and can also offer some physical fun! LOOK UP You will be amazed to discover how many letters are suspended above our heads: in telephone lines, electrical wires, architectural details, and among the foliage. There could be a "Y" in the crook of a tree branch. LOOK DOWN Here's a tip that lends credence to the phrase, "The world is at your feet!" Be surprised at the many clearly formed letters in pavement cracks and gaps. GET SOME PERSPECTIVE Taking a few steps back could present another letter. Look at the whole picture, a lamp could become the dot on an "i" or "j".

NUTRITION

Top Tips for Healthy

Winter Eating:

By Dietician Natalie Grobler

Controlling weight during the cold, dark days of winter is a challenge for most of us. During winter months we tend to gain weight and are more prone to flu and infections. Hopefully these top tips can help prevent weight gain and help your children’s bodies fight off flu and infections. Winter weight gain is mostly due to the fact that warm ‘comfort’ foods are so much more attractive in colder weather. These comfort foods are normally much higher in calories compared to summer salads and fresh fruits and the end result after a few months is weight gain. This winter, follow these top tips for healthy eating:

Unhealthy

Red meat with visible fat and creamy sauces. Red meat with visible fat and creamy sauces. One creamy red meat dish is around 45% of your daily calorie intake.

Eat more fish, especially mackerel and salmon, at least twice a week. These contain omega-3 fatty acids with fewer calories. Use lean meat or skinless chicken and make a healthy stew for the cold nights. Use fat free cottage cheese or plain low fat yoghurt instead of cream in recipes or you can use tomato base sauces.

Refined carbohydrates, like white bread, white rolls, rusks, biscuits, cakes, rice crispies, corn flakes.

Eat high fibre carbohydrates, like fruit, vegetables , whole-wheat bread and whole grain cereals. E.g. Oats porridge, tortilla wraps chunky vegetables soups, wholegrain or whole wheat breads or rolls. Add lentils and beans to stew’s, soups and meat dishes.

Deep-frying or any fried foods.

Use baking, poaching, steaming, grilling or dry fry (use cook ’n spray or spray ‘n cook) as cooking methods. These require no added oil. If you have to use a drop of oil, rather use macadamia or canola oil. These oils contain less “bad fats", making it a better option for heart health. Eat jacket or boiled new potatoes with low fat cottage cheese or grated Mozzarella cheese instead of chips.

By deep frying potatoes you can easily add 200 calories to your meal.

8

Healthy Alternative

Cream-based soups.

Fill up on chunky vegetable, minestrone, lentil or chicken soup, without added cream. Replace summer salads with healthy hot vegetable soups.

High fat and sugar treats, like shortbread, chocolate cake and pastries.

Eat a handful of dried fruit or make a fruit salad to satisfy your sweet tooth. Eat more winter fruits to lift your mood, e.g. Satsuma’s, oranges and grapefruits. Bake your own cookies and halve the amount of sugar. Add some extra dried fruit. This will have little effect on taste and texture, but will reduce calories.

Cappuccino or hot chocolate made with cream or full-cream milk and lots of sugar.

Drink tea, coffee, or skinny cappuccino made with fat-free milk and sweeteners, or drink low-fat hot chocolate (Options or Highlights) or nourishing Milo made with fat free milk.

Takeaways: e.g. pizza’s, burgers and pies.

Make your own pizzas and burger’s at home. Using lean mince meat and low fat pizza toppings e.g. cooked ham, peppers, mushrooms, onions and Mozzarella cheese.

Camping Apples Perfect for Camping! Tart, firm apples This easy apple dessert satisfies 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon the desire for a sweet treat. It's a whole lot healthier than real apple pie! Instructions Before heading out for your hike or camping trip, mix 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a widemouth container.

at SPAR!

By the campfire, each person skewers a tart, firm unpeeled apple on a sharpened stick. Slowly rotate the apples close to the hot embers until the skins blacken and began to split. After parents remove the skins with a fork, everyone can roll their still-skewered apples in the cinnamon sugar until they're well coated. Parents can help younger kids slide theirs onto a paper plate; older kids might choose to eat theirs right off the stick!

Chocolate 3 cups nuts Clusters 1/2 cup sunflower seeds 1/2 cup coconut flakes 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup dried cranberries or cherries 1 cup chocolate chips

When we snack on trail mix from the store, my kids go right for the chocolate pieces and ignore the rest. But in this ingenious recipe, melted chocolate is poured over the nuts, seeds, and fruit, so the kids eat all the goodness instead of just picking out the goodies. (Be sure to bring hand wipes with you to tidy chocolaty fingers.) Instructions Mix together the nuts, sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, raisins, and dried cranberries or cherries. Spread the mixture on a baking sheet lined with waxed paper. Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave. Pour the chocolate over the baking sheet in ribbons. Stir to coat everything. Let the chocolate cool, then break the mix into pieces and pack it in individual containers. Makes 12 servings.

MIND MATTERS

Making the transition from primary school to high school requires some adjustment on many levels, and often young children are not fully prepared for these adjustments which can then result in some difficulties in getting settled into the routines of secondary schooling. So what can you, as a parent, do to help make this transition a smooth one? For the purpose of this article I will discuss just two critical factors that a young adolescent needs to adjust to in making the transition from primary school to high school. In doing this, I am not detracting from other difficulties in the emotional and social sphere but rather focusing the discussion on more logistical issues.

These two critical factors are; i) the increased academic and extra-mural workload, and ii) the shift in responsibility for getting things done. Research has indicated that these are two of the main areas of difficulty for young adolescents starting high school. When moving into high school the number of subjects that a child has to take, increases. Add to this the significant increase in the quantity of work covered in each subject and the hours required to succeed in these subjects, and you realise how critical time management and organisational skills become. The high school day is longer and the extra-mural programme more demanding than it is in primary school. Suddenly a child is faced with a whole lot more to do, and a lot less time to do it all. Teaching your child good time management and organisational skills is critical. A page-a-day diary is a good place to start. Get your child to write down everything that is required of them on a daily basis. Using a diary effectively is a life skill that every person can benefit from. Use a monthly planner to note all test dates, due dates for projects and assignments, as well as sports fixtures. Colour code the activities and then stick the monthly planner up on the wall in front of your child’s desk at home so that it is visible. By doing this your child will be able to plan their time better and shouldn’t end up leaving things to the last minute. The shift in responsibility is the second challenge that is quite difficult for some. At primary school, children are often spoon-fed, and in many nstances the teacher looks over their shoulder to ensure deadlines are met, homework is written down and that their school life is generally organised, but in high school this responsibility falls on the adolescent’s shoulders. Many teenagers manage this sudden increase in responsibility remarkably well, but many don’t, and need to be taught the skills to stay on top of things. As a parent it is your responsibility to help your child manage this transition by teaching them the skills, and not by doing everything for them. Written by GREG CRIGHTON EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST

HOME WORK

Camping Happy

with Kids

Family camping adventures are the meat and potatoes of childhood memories; experiencing the wildlife, getting dirty, campfire meals and of course enjoying the classic camping delicacy, marshmellows.
Regardless of your camping experience, it remains daunting when it involves having your kids in tow. Should you stay in a tent, caravan, camp site or rough it with no plumbing? What food should you bring? What should go in the First-Aid kit? The list of considerations goes on and on and just when you think you've thought of everything...
reality happens and you’ve forgotten an essential. Here is a list of tips, ideas on what to pack, and ideas to build your kids enthusiasm by getting them involved in camping fun! Consider the activities your children enjoy; bicycling, hiking, canoeing, swimming or just enjoying wildlife. Then select your location accordingly.
If it's your first time camping, consider the Kruger National Park with running water, bathroom facilities and showers. This will keep the first trip positive and will encourage a more adventuresome trip in the future.

Select activities that your family will enjoy together and bring or rent the proper supplies, such as kayaks and life-vests or bicycles.
Practice setting up your tent. Involve the kids and let them play in the tent for a day.
First timers may want to have a backyard campout, before heading out into the bush.

Even super moms may forget - make a list! •

• •

18

Bring a flashlight for every family member and a battery operated lantern for each tent, if possible. No gas lanterns in the tents! Don't forget to bring plenty of batteries. Glow sticks are fun too! Keep the menu easy. Think Hot Dogs, braai’s & salad, mealies and fruit. Remember plenty of snacks. Trail mix, cereal bars, salty crackers and dried fruit are the perfect snack foods.

• • • • • • •

Make sure everyone can sleep comfortably remember extra blankets. Purchase a First-Aid Kit and keep it with your camping supplies. Pack all of your supplies in plastic tubs. Remember the bug repellant and sunscreen; forgetting that can ruin a trip! Pack a clothesline for hanging towels and wet items.
Lay plastic tarps down under your tents and take a few to spare in case it rains. Keep the first few camp trips short 2-4 nights. Teach your children about safety and how to respect nature. Enlist the kids help with the camp chores. Make the camp chores extra fun - have contests for gathering the most kindling, best camp cooking, most organized gear, fastest clean-up etc.

HAVE FUN CREATE MEMORIES • • • • • • • • •

Bring some glue, paper and scissors, for making nature collages. Sing good old-fashioned campfire songs. Keep the portable DVD players at home and practice your singing in the car. If you need to, buy a book and CD to help-out. Search the sky for constellations. Listen and identify night sounds.
Be sure to follow park rules. Bring a book to help identify birds and animals. Pack a deck of cards and/or small games. Provide children with their own disposable cameras.

MIND MATTERS "If parents don't read a lot in front of kids, and instead watch lots of electronics – like TV and the computer – then the kids will think that's what they're supposed to do and they might not read as much," says Cameron.

READING Tips from Kids Parents can make reading more motivating by letting children choose books and making reading a memorable family event. Find out what children themselves have to say about these guidelines for parents to increase motivation. Here are a few tried-and-true guidelines on how to motivate kids to read, with comments and suggestions from kids themselves. Let kids pick out their own books

Book choice is a strong motivation for readers young and old. Let kids pick out books at the library or bookstore. It's almost a sure thing they'll want to read them. If you pick them out, they won't.

"Let your children pick out whatever interests them. When I was little, I always picked dinosaur books. My dad would read them to me. I got to pick out any book, and he would read it, no matter how hard it was," says Brian. Set goals and reward reading

Reward reading with more reading, we've always said. Stop by the library or bookstore for the next book in your child's favorite series, or let your child shop for it online. Most kids agree, but they don't also see a problem with more… well, extrinsic rewards.

"Go around your town and find out about contests – you know, like the ones at the library where if you read so many books, you get a reward. Or make up your own," says Vincent. "If your kid likes ice cream, then every time he finishes, say, two books, at least over a hundred pages, then take him out for a little treat." Let your kids see you read

20

Read the newspaper over your morning coffee, take a magazine from the rack in a doctor's office while you wait, and stuff a paperback into your purse, pocket, or briefcase. Your kids will catch on to the fact that reading is something you like to do in your spare time.

Make reading together fun

Parents can convey important positive impressions about reading by making reading an experience their children will remember and cherish. Emily says,

"My mom really likes to read to me and she makes the books sound funny by using different voices." It's not what you read to your child that counts; it's how. Make a story come alive by changing your voice and pace, or using sound effects and motions. "For me, it was not just

books – it was how my mom read the book that got my attention," says Brittany.

Create loving associations Reading together is a time for closeness and cuddling – another way to show your love as a parent, grandparent, or caring adult. For children lucky enough to have parents who read to them, the memory is lasting and their love for books and reading lifelong.

"Most of all, do it the old-fashioned way. Hold your child while you read together. One of my fondest memories is having my mom read to me in bed at night and falling asleep in her arms. I slept perfectly those nights," says Taurean By: Reading Is Fundamental (2005)

WARM & HAPPY

Keep pets warm this winter Winter seems to have arrived. Many dog owners don’t know how to keep their dogs warm during the cold winter months. We as people are able to keep ourselves warm by layering our clothes, lying in front of the TV or heater, or under a blanket with a big cuppa hot chocolate. What about your animals? Please do not try and spoil them with a hot chocolate, this may only make them sick. Certain animals are more affected by cold than others, particularly older pets and/or those with certain ailments, like arthritis. So bear this in mind when you decide on how to deal with the cold. The best option would be to keep your animals indoors when the weather is icy cold. However, it is not always possible. If your dog is small, has short hair or is older, you may want to consider purchasing a jacket to keep him warm. Try to avoid decorative wear as items such as “diamante”, as it could become a choking hazard. Ensure that your dog has a proper kennel. The kennels should have a slope of at least 10cm off the ground to avoid drafts. Make sure that the opening of the kennel does not face the wind and ensure that there are several blankets for your dog to cuddle up in. You may provide a hot water bottle for your dog to cuddle up to. But please make sure that it is not too hot. You do not want your dog to get burnt. However it is not wise to consider this option if your dog likes to chew or cats who like to dig their nails into something they enjoy. Estelle de Villiers Lowveld SPCA
