HOLIDAY FUN & GAMES PUPPET SHOW

MEMORY GAME

What you'll need: Old socks Buttons Felt Ice-lolly sticks Old birthday cards Colouring pens Glue A wooden spoon Fabric What to do: Puppets are fun to make and great to play with, especially when acting out stories.

This is a good memory game for car journeys, restaurants, or anywhere that requires you to sit still. One person starts the game by saying, "I'm going to the beach and I'm going to bring my..." Fill in the blank with anything you want, "flip flops", for example.

Silly dog – an old sock can be quickly transformed into a "silly dog" puppet. Make a dog from a sock by cutting out two ears from some felt – or any sort of fabric scraps you may have – and sewing them on either side of the heel. Sew on two buttons for eyes, and add some black stitching for a nose (or you can draw these on with a marker pen). Snake – create a snake from any colour sock. To begin, sew a strip of red rick rack ribbon, starting at the heel and going along the back of the sock. Glue or sew on two black eyes that have been cut out of felt and a red felt tongue.

EASTER EGG ROLL This Easter game is played by children in the United States.

The next person then repeats the first line and adds another item, "I'm going to the beach and I'm going to bring my flip flops and my sun lotion".

What to do: This works best with multiple players. Each player needs a decorated hard-boiled egg and a long stick of some sort (a bat or golf club works fine). Line up the eggs in a row and have each player stand by her egg.

Play continues around the group with each person repeating the items mentioned and adding their own at the end. Each player must begin with the phrase "I'm going to the beach..." and must list all items in the correct order. The game starts over when someone forgets an item or gets the order wrong.

On "Go!" players start rolling their eggs toward the finish line. The first one to reach it is the winner. This game is the highlight of the annual Easter festivities held on the White House lawn in the United States.

Spoon person – using felt-tip pens, draw a face on an old wooden kitchen spoon. Cut out some clothes for your spoon person from some extra fabric or an old shirt, and glue it on to the handle of the spoon. Don't expect the spoon back for cooking, though!

4

It's also fun to change the opening line. Instead of the beach you can go to the park, the market, grandma's house, or wherever you choose.

Stick puppets – a great use for old greeting cards and colouring books! Cut out a few characters from old birthday cards or books, or draw the outline of a character (a cat or teddy bear) and colour it in with your child. Glue a washed ice-lolly stick to the back, which you can use to move the puppet around.

NUTRITION

Healthy & Happy Holidays

The holidays can be a challenging time to keep kids eating healthy. Keeping your family active and focused on healthy habits doesn’t have to be hard work, make healthy eating fun and involve your children in preparation of meals and snacks. With a bit of planning, kids can enjoy this wonderful Easter celebration and still eat well. Holiday eating tips •

• • •

• • • •

Keep to a regular eating routine, with breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner rather than adopting a grazing style of eating. Try to eat meals together as a family Have healthy foods readily available. If more nutritious choices are readily available, your family will be more likely to eat them. Sliced, ready-to-eat fresh fruit , veggies, popcorn , whole grain crackers and bread, low fat cheese wedges, low fat yoghurts are great alternatives for biscuits , cakes and chips Offer a wide variety of foods to your child Encourage your child to drink water, milk and diluted fresh fruit juices Be prepared and plan ahead. Allow your children small treats during the holidays, aiming for not more than two treats per week. Plan outdoor family activities.

By Natalie Grobler

Get children involved Children are more likely to be interested in eating healthy foods when they have been given a chance to help in the kitchen. Teach them the difference between healthy food and junk food. Children enjoy helping with grocery shopping, selecting what they can have for snacks and preparing meals or snacks!

Remember: The childhood impulse to imitate is strong; the best move you can make to start your child off on the right dietary foot is to be a role model. Make sure that you are making healthy choices about food yourself during the holiday period. MIND MATTERS

Finding Friends By Greg Crighton

The start of a new school year brings with it great excitement for many young children, but for some, this can also be quite a daunting time and often leaves children feeling lost, over-whelmed and sometimes very anxious. Children are often expected to move into a new school, or a new class, and settle without thinking twice about it, but it doesn’t always happen that way. People will tell you that children are resilient, and that children make new friends easily, but sometimes a little help is needed to guide them through, what potentially could be, a very unsettling time. Young children like familiarity, so taking the time to visit the school beforehand and to meet the teacher is crucial. Children also like routine, so the sooner the parents and the staff of the school can establish ‘morning’ routines, the better. Children who walk into a busy classroom are less likely to feel anxious about their parents leaving them at school. Settling in and making friends happens quite easily for many, but for others it can be a long and slow process. This is not a negative reflection on who the child is or what they are capable of, but merely an example of the uniqueness of individual characters and personalities. Most schools have a “buddy system” in operation, whereby a new child to the school or class, is allocated a ‘buddy’ whose job it is to assist the new child in finding their way around, and in being included in break-time activities. It is also important for the new child to know who to go to when they are feeling anxious about anything in particular. The teacher needs to explain these systems to the child. Getting involved in school activities is critical. Involvement in extra-mural activities is often the least stressful environment for a child to become involved, and in so doing be accepted into a particular social group. This works well for children of all ages and in schools where participation is key. Extramural involvement does not have to be a sport.

12

Any good school will offer a wide variety of activities, such as music, cultural activities, including speech and drama, as well as clubs and societies. These non-competitive activities allow a child to find their feet and to experience something new while making friends in a non-threatening environment. As a parent, it is perfectly normal to worry about your child settling in, but it is critical not to project your anxieties onto the child before and after school. Be positive about the new school and the new school year, encourage them, praise them, and stay in touch with what they are doing, while at the same time not being over-bearing. Don’t be a ‘helicopter’ parent who hovers over the child’s every move. Let them find their space in their new school. Let them grow in confidence through their own actions. You will be surprised how well children can do this without their parent’s direct intervention. If you want to assist, then allow for the opportunities to invite friends over after school, or to go to movies together, and to socialise outside of the school environment. If you are worried about your child settling in a new school environment, then don’t hesitate to contact the school and to ask for assistance. The staff at the school are directly involved in your child’s well-being for a good portion of the day and they will be well equipped to advise and assist you in making sure your child is happy at school.

... for Children

PILATES

Pilates for children specifically targets core strength, coordination, balance and flexibility. Not to mention something that’s going to keep their interest for more than one session. Pilates is also designed for the non-athletic child and is a smart way of getting children to participate in exercise because it caters to their various ages, fitness levels, and athletic abilities. Benefits for your child: Pilates helps children gain awareness of their body and its workings. Pilates improves the way the body functions, looks and feels – and knowing one’s body inside and out can lead to greater self-esteem. Also, most people may not be aware that Pilates can assist with weight management issues in younger people because this form of exercise strengthens and lengthens core muscles without adding bulk. So children can learn to love their bodies no matter what. Another benefit of Pilates for youngsters is that it helps prevent injury on the playground or on the court – and is the basis for improving posture, and increasing strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. Pilates also gives children a “different” kind of physical activity to enjoy because it can be done on everything from a ball, to a mat, to various types of equipment.

Choose from the following:

Kids Pilates Pregnancy Pilates PeeWee Pilates General Groups (Moms & Babies) One-on-One ... and many more!

So kids find Pilates to be a fun form of fitness and that in itself will keep a child’s interest. But perhaps one of the most important benefits for children is increased focus. Being able to center the breath, hold various positions for a certain amount of time, and concentrate on mind-body fitness are cornerstones for youths to challenge their energies into one activity. Pilates does exactly this and more. This form of fitness provides the perfect physical and mental platform necessary for children to excel in athletics and in school. Regular exercise makes your body strong and flexible, helps you think more clearly and makes you feel more confident. Pilates helps children develop a general grasp on the importance of connecting the mind and body with fitness – and such benefits are clearly in the interest of building a solid foundation for an active, healthy life. Pilates isn’t just about the exercise – it’s about the experience with oneself and what one gets out of it. At any age. By Kerrie Lee Brown

HUIS WERK

VAKANSIE & VIERPOTIGE KINDERS Deur Dr. Quentin Otto

Paasnaweek ...
