by Cora Breytenbach Research shows that without a secure motherly attachment, children's bodies activate a stress reaction to unexpected events. The attachment bond is the unique emotional relationship between your baby and you as his or her primary caretaker. This is the key factor in the way your infant's brain organizes itself and influences your child’s social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development. A secure attachment bond teaches your baby to trust you, to communicate their feelings to you, and eventually to trust others as well. As you and your baby connect with one another, your baby learns how to have a healthy sense of self and how to be in a loving, empathetic relationship. Bonding develops through interaction. Breastfeeding, reading to your child or any activity where you spend one-on-one quality time with your child turns into a bonding experience. Infants who have deep bonding with their mothers become very independent at a young age. This bond also boosts their self-esteem. It is the most important part of a child’s life. Even when their lives are unstable, the bonding process enables them to be self-reliant and enjoy relationships with peers. These children are also more successful in school. Bonding creates within the child a sense of confidence and a positive attitude. This influences both attendance and achievement. Just like with any relationship, building a positive relationship between mother and child is one that requires work and effort to make it strong and successful. Parenting is a tough job, and maintaining close relationships and open communications, helps to ensure that mothers and their children stay connected through all ages of their upbringing.

Here are some tips for enhancingthe bond between mother and child: Say I LoveYou Tell your child that you love him every day, no matter his age. Even after a disagreement with your child, when you don't exactly "like your child" at that moment, it is more important than ever to express your love. A simple "I love you" goes a long way toward developing and strengthening a relationship.

mind matters

Teach Your Faith Teach your child about your faith and beliefs. Tell him what you believe and why. Allow time for your child to ask questions and answer them honestly. Reinforce those teachings often.

Develop And Maintain A Special Bedtime Ritual For younger children, reading a favorite bedtime book or telling stories is a ritual that will be remembered most likely throughout their life. Older children should not be neglected either. Once children start reading, have them read a page, chapter, or short book to you. Even most teenagers still enjoy the ritual of being told goodnight in a special way by a parent, even if they don't act like it!

Let Your Children Help You Parents sometimes inadvertently miss out on opportunities to forge closer relationships by not allowing their child to help them with various tasks and chores. Unloading groceries after going to the store is a good example of something that children of most ages can and should assist with. Choosing which shoes look better with your dress lets a child know you value her or his opinion. Of course, if you ask, be prepared to accept and live with the choice made!

Talking, Laughing and Playing With Your Children The importance of having fun, playing with, holding, and sharing happiness with your child cannot be overstated. The key is to really play with your children. Play with dolls, balls, cars, clay, paint, dance, sing songs, or whatever is fun and interesting. It doesn't matter what you play, just enjoy each other! Let kids see your silly side. Older kids enjoy cards, chess, board games, etc. while younger ones will have fun playing about anything, as long as it involves you! Heart to heart talks and just listening intently to what your child has to say, can create a strong bond that will last forever.

Eat Meals As A Family You've heard this before, and it really is important! Eating together sets the stage for conversation and sharing. Turn the TV off, and don't rush through a meal. Really talk and enjoy one another. Make eye contact! It can become a quality time most remembered by young and old alike.

Seek Out One-On-One Opportunities Often Some moms have special nights or regular “dates" with their children to create that one-on-one opportunity. Whether it is a walk around the neighborhood, a special trip to a playground, a coffee/milkshake at a coffee shop or just a movie night with just the two of you, it is important to celebrate each child individually.

Although it is more of a challenge the more children in a family, it is really achievable! Think creatively and the opportunities created will be ones that you remember in the future.

Respect Their Choices You don't have to like their mismatched shirt and shorts or love how a child has placed pictures in his room. However, it is important to respect those choices. Children reach out for independence at a young age and parents can help to foster those decision-making skills by being supportive and even looking the other way on occasion. After all, it really is okay if a child goes to daycare with a striped green shirt and pink shorts.

Make Them A Priority In Your Life Your children need to know that you believe they are a priority in your life. Children can observe excessive stress and notice when they feel you are not paying them attention. Sometimes, part of being a parent is not worrying about the small stuff. They grow up so fast, and every day is special. Take advantage of your precious time together while you have it!

Just HAVE FUN and ENJOY your child!! Article written for Mom's Notes Magazine by: Cora Breytenbach Educational Psychologist 0828102409 corabreytenbach@yahoo.com 5

IMMUNE BOOSTER FOODS: REMEMBER, PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN TREATMENT Article by Natalie Grobler

Eating a healthy balanced diet rich in a variety of immune booster nutrients will help keep your kids immune system on guard. Your child’s immune system is essential to their overall health and well-being, especially during developmental years. Adequately feeding children’s immune system boosts its fighting power. Immune boosters work in many ways. They increase the number of white cells in the immune system and help them to fight better against flues and infections.

TOP IMMUNE BOOSTER TIPS: 1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects against infection and enhances immunity. Vitamin C increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies preventing the entry of viruses. Vitamin C supplements are inexpensive and Vitamin C is available in a natural form in many fruits and vegetables. Aim for at least three Vitamin C rich fruits every day. Vitamin C boosting fruits: kiwi, papaya. orange, guava, strawberries, pineapple.

2. Vitamin E

Vitamin C is important to a healthy immune system. Vitamin E stimulates the production of natural killer cells, those that seek out and destroy germs. Research has shown that people who eat Vitamin E rich foods tend to have a higher immunity. Aim for 30-60 mg every day of Vitamin E from a diet rich in seeds, vegetable oils, variety of nuts and whole grains. Make sure you include nuts as an afternoon snack and make ham or chicken filled whole grain sandwiches for lunch boxes. Drizzle good quality vegetable oils over potato wedges and steamed veggies. You can also consider a daily Vitamin Supplement of Vitamin A, C & E.

3. Bioflavenoids

A group of phytonutrients called bioflavenoids aids the immune system by protecting the cells of the body against environmental pollutants. A diet that contains a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, at least five servings per day, will help you get the bioflavenoids needed to help your child’s immune system work in top form.

6

You can use supplements to top-up on your children’s phytonutrients during the winter months. Sportron makes Phytoguard a good phytonutrient supplement.

4. Zinc

This valuable mineral increases the production of white blood cells that fight infection and helps them fight more aggressively. The best source of zinc for infants and young children is zinc-fortified cereals, starts your child’s day with a healthy Zinc- rich breakfast. Children up to age 6 years can take 10 to 20 mg per day. Older kids can take 20 to 40 mg per day.

5. Selenium

This mineral increases natural killer cells and mobilizes cancer-fighting cells. Best food sources of selenium are tuna, whole grains, vegetables (depending on the selenium content of the soil), brown rice, egg yolks, cottage cheese, chicken, sunflower seeds, and garlic, Brazil nuts, and lamb chops.

6. Omega-3 fatty acids

Research concluded that children taking a half teaspoon of flaxseed oil per day, experienced fewer and less severe respiratory infections. Flaxseed oil and oily fish (salmon, sardines, trout, mackerel) are good sources of omega-3. Omega-3 act as immune booster by increasing the activity of phagocytes; the white blood cells that eat up bacteria. These fats also help strengthen cell membranes, thereby speeding up healing and strengthening resistance to infection in the body. When taking essential fatty acid supplements, such as flaxseed or omega -3 oils, take additional vitamin E, which acts together with essential fatty acids to boost the immune system. You can increase your child’s intake of omega-3 oil by adding 1-2 teaspoons to a fruit and yoghurt smoothie; they will not even taste the difference or you can give your child a salmon whole grain sandwich.

7. Probiotics

These are healthy bacteria that live in our intestines and help to protect the body through immune enhancement. The best species of probiotics are lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. The gut is the largest immune organ in the body. If you child has a healthy gut he or she will have a healthy body. Probiotics are in a liquid, powder, and capsules form suitable for children and infants, take as directed. Always take with prescription of antibiotics and continue for a week after completion of antibiotic dose. Good to take during the winter months to boost the immune system.

8. Sleep

the perfect way to protect your family this winter !

Make sure your child sleeps a full night. This is one of the “must-do” for anyone who wants to boost his or her immune system. The immune system is only strong if the body remains strong.Your child needs enough rest to maintain his/her physical strength.

9. Exercise

Let them go out and play. We all know exercise is important. It’s helpful if you play with them. Not only are you fostering a closer family bond, you’re also getting a workout yourself.

IMMUNE DRAINERS:

Some foods can make you more susceptible to colds:

• Reduce intake of sugar and sweets. Sugar has an immune- suppressing effect. Cut back, if not totally eliminate sweets. Instead, give them healthy snacks like fresh and dried fruit. Don’t forget their serving of vegetables everyday. • Avoid high-fat convenient foods, as they can decrease the activity of the immune system. • Avoid caffeine (fizzy drinks, tea, coffee, chocolates) undermine your body’s immune system and act as a diuretic- which will deplete your body of water.

MOM'S BEAUTY SECRETS What is Botox?

What is a filler?

Botox is a protein derived from botulinum toxin that is injected underneath the skin in order to minimize or smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. It relaxes the muscle, giving the person a clean and smooth facial appearance, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. Botox has gained in popularity over the years for several very good reasons. Compared to a surgical face lift it is less invasive, results are seen within 10-14 days, much less bruising and swelling is visible and no stitches and bandages. It is definitely a much quicker and cheaper option. Botox takes such little time to administer that a patient can receive a treatment on her lunch hour and the best of all, it’s virtually painless. If you are considering cosmetic surgery, why not consider Botox first?

As we age, our skin changes over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. Hyaloronic acid also starts to diminish with age, which results in loss of volume and hydration and more sagging, loose skin. A filler works to correct this by restoring this substance in your skin, helping to smooth wrinkles and folds. Fillers have a smooth gel consistency and when injected underneath the wrinkle, makes it miraculously disappear! Fillers successfully treat the following lines and many more:

The uses of Botox ranges from the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) to treatment of migraine and tension headaches, but the most popular treatment patients request is frown line reduction on the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes. The effects of the injections last from 3-6 months, but early clinical studies indicate that the duration of the treatment benefits is increased over time so that you should require fewer injections in the future. A recent study suggests women who get Botox starting in their late 20’s develop fewer wrinkles than women who age naturally. Botox may also be used in conjunction with cosmetic surgery, laser skin resurfacing, fillers, chemical peels and mesotherapy, to enhance the effects of these treatments.

• • • • •

Nasolabial folds (creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of you mouth) Marionette lines (creases running from the corners of your mouth) Deep and fine lines on the forehead and around the eyes and lips Also used for cheek, chin and nose augmentation Reduces the appearance of dark circles around the eyes.

The best thing about fillers is that the results are seen immediately after treatment and could last for up to one year!

What is a chemical peel? Peels are specially adapted to treat wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, lack of radiance, hyper pigmentation, microcystic acne and other skin irregularities. It is ideal for maintaining an even and radiant complexion and is suitable for all skin types and tones. The result is an improvement in the health of your skin from the very first session.

what is Mesotherapy? Aesthetic anti-ageing mesotherapy is a biologically active treatment that targets the causes and consequences of skin ageing. Mesotherapy reverses the aging of the skin, treats wrinkles, hydrates, plumps and tightens the skin. Also known as facial glow therapy this unique cocktail contains 55 ingredients including vitamins, amino acids, minerals, coenzymes, nucleic acids and anti-oxidants for the treatment of wrinkles and enhances brightness and radiance, hydration, ionic balancing, stimulation of cellular growth, active redensification of the dermis, suppleness and tonocity and anti-radical protection. R1300 / treatment with a minimum of 5 treatments over 3 months necessary for a skin visibly rejuvenated.

What is Spina Bifida?

Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect which occurs when the neural tube does not close properly along its length so part of the meninges or spinal cord protrudes through the spinal column, often resulting in physical disability. The severity of the problems caused by spina bifida depends on the size of the lesion, its location along the spine and the extent of the damage caused to the spinal cord. It can result in lack of bladder or bowel control, paralysis of the legs and abnormal spinal curvature. Hydrocephalus occurs in about 80% of children with spina bifida. It is due to an abnormality that prevents free circulation and drainage of the cerebrospinal fluid (fluid that circulates in the brain and spinal cord). As a result, the fluid accumulates and causes the head to enlarge excessively. If not treated this may cause brain damage and may lead to mental disability. Other neural tube defects include anencephaly and encephalocoele. The incidence of neural tube defects varies according to region, social class and population group. The incidence in South Africa is believed to be around 1 in 500 to 800 births making these conditions an important field of research. Inheritance is multifactorial which means that genes from both parents interact with some factors in the environment to cause a defect. Research in many countries has shown that periconceptual folic acid intake can greatly reduce a woman's risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect. www.saida.org.za

Folic Acid Folic acid, taken in supplement form at least one month before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy, greatly reduces the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube defects. Get folic acid first It's critical to have enough folic acid in your system by the early weeks of pregnancy to prevent spina bifida. Because many women don't discover that they're pregnant until this time, experts recommend that all women of childbearing age take a daily supplement of 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid. Several foods, including bread, pasta, rice and breakfast cereals, are fortified with 400 mcg of folic acid per serving. Folic acid may be listed on food packages as folate, which is the natural form of folic acid found in food. It's also a good idea to eat a healthy diet, including foods rich in folate or enriched with folic acid. This vitamin is present naturally in many foods, including: • Beans • Citrus fruits and juices • Egg yolks • Dark green vegetables, such as broccoli and spinach. www.mayoclinic.com

"We believe that our great God will provide through everyone that comes in contact with this cause and that the needed funds will be raised." Annél Strydom (Mother)

The Strydom Family

MEET LITTLE ANIKA Anika Strydom was born on 10 November 2010 with undiagnosed Spina Bifida.

Her spine did not close properly and the nerves to her lower body was damaged. Although she’s doing very well, she doesn’t have any sensation and limited control over her lower limbs. This also affects her bowl and bladder control and brain fluid circulation. Anika’s sister, Esti, was born on 6 January 2012 but passed away 2 days later due to a congenital heart disease. Fortunately it was possible to store a great amount of stem cells from Esti’s umbilical cord which has a good chance of a being a match for Anika. Her parents believe that this was God’s plan with Esti’s short life. With the progress in stem cell therapy and the stem cells that Esti gave Anika, her parents are hoping that Anika’s control in movement will greatly improve. Unfortunately this is a very costly exercise which will have to be done in either China or the USA.

Mom, open your heart - help us, help Anika.

PRE-NATAL MASSAGE

crib notes

Therapeutic massage has been used for centuries to improve overall health, reduce stress, and relieve muscle tension. Pregnant women have often received ambivalent responses from the health community regarding the safety and purpose of massage during pregnancy. Modern investigation and research is proving that prenatal massage therapy can be a very instrumental ingredient in women’s pre-natal care and should be given careful consideration.

The benefits of pre-natal massage or massage during pregnancy:

Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labour outcomes and newborn health. Swedish massage is the recommended pre-natal massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy.

Benefits of Pre-Natal Massage: • • • • • • • • • • •

Hormone regulation Reduction of swelling Improvement of nerve pain- sciatic nerve pain Reduced back pain Reduced joint pain Improved circulation Reduced oedema Reduced muscle tension and headaches Reduced stress and anxiety Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles Better sleep

What precautions should be taken when seeking pre-natal massage?

Women with the following conditions should speak with their Doctor prior to receiving a massage: • • • • • •

14

High risk pregnancy Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) Preeclampsia Previous pre-term labour Experiencing severe swelling, high blood pressure, or sudden, severe headaches Recently gave birth

Is pre-natal massage safe throughout the entire pregnancy? Women can begin massage therapy at any point in their pregnancy – during the first, second, or third trimester. Please be cautious however in your first trimester if you have experienced complications in previous pregnancies and if you are still in doubt contact your GP or Gynaecologist.

Incorporating Massage into Your Pre-natal Care

The benefits of massage can improve overall pre-natal health for many pregnant women. Along with the guidance and advice of a Doctor/Gynaecologist, massage therapy can be incorporated into routine pre-natal care as an emotional and physical health supplement proven to improve pregnancy outcome, and maternal health.

BUYING FOR A

BABY SHOWER

Whether you prefer to have a baby shower for a pending baby or a recently born baby, you are sure to find some fabulous gifts at Kids Emporium! We are proud of the products we sell as we believe they are of good quality, and priced reasonably.

Tips for buying baby shower gifts:

If a baby shower gift registry has been set up, try and buy items according to the list. You might want to buy the items from a different shop, but fact is, the new parents have a need for those products & it will make life much easier if they receive gifts per that list. Consider buying gifts together with a friend of family member. Some parents do need more expensive practical items such as a baby monitor or a much wanted nappy bag. If 3 or 4 friends buy together, the financial contribution is not that much. And be assured that the new parents will remember this type of gift forever! The idea is not to only shower the baby with gifts, but to also help the new parents setting up their baby room with practical beautiful products. If you are the type of person that wants to buy unique gifts for the baby and or parents, Kids Emporium will gladly assist you. Our friendly staff is always willing to assist and we stock some suppliers that are not to be found anywhere else in Nelspruit. If worse comes to worse, remember you can never go wrong with a Kids Emporium gift card!

• • • • •

Consider booties, adorable beanies for boys and girls, leggings or bibs Educational or wooden toys Bath time accessories and products Feeding helpers Baby nursery and accessories

We also have a focus on community upliftment projects and therefore you can find hand-made blankets, jerseys, boleros etc.

We even have some gifts for the expectant mommy. Kids Emporium has a promotion in-store until 30 June 2012 for all expectant parents. Set up a gift registry with us & once more than R1,500 has been spent on the registry, the mom will receive a R350 voucher from Michelle Mos, qualified therapist. Michelle provides massages to pre and post pregnant women as well as infant massage. (See article on opposite page). So by supporting the gift registry, you also make sure that mom receives something in return! An extended layette essential list / baby registry is available from the Kids Emporium store in Sonpark.

Here are some gift ideas: •

Stay away from newborn or size 0-3 clothing. Most babies outgrow these sizes very quickly. This of course is not applicable when there is a premature baby on the cards. Don’t just buy pink for girls and blue for boys. It will be nice for the mom to get a little bit of variety in terms of colour and sizing. Make sure the clothing is season appropriate. Cute outfits are always great, but don’t buy something you wouldn’t want your child wearing.

The Health Benefits of

BALTIC AMBER Baltic Amber has been used for centuries in Europe for it’s healing properties. Amber is one of only a handful of gems of vegetative, not mineral, origin and is warm and comfortable against the skin. Natural Baltic Amber is high in Succinic Acid, a natural constituent of plant and animal tissues. Baltic Amber contains the highest percentage of the reactive ingredient (RI) ‘Succinic Acid’ in a natural form, as it contains as much as 8 percent by weight. Succinic Acid (RI) in amber is a powerful anti-oxidant. • • • • • • • •

Helps fight toxic free radicals Helps to regulate disruptions of the cardiac rhythm Succinic acid has been shown to stimulate neural system recovery Bolster the immune system Helps compensate for energy drain in the body and brain Boosts awareness and concentration Stimulates the reflexes Reduces stress

Baltic Amber has been used for centuries in Europe especially for its health benefits for smaller children. Since contemporary science has now validated and continues to validate the age-old claims, Baltic Amber has become hugely popular accross the world with today's moms, especially for teething babies. Now your child can also benefit from Baltic Amber beads. 20

amber facts: the wisdom of ages & the science for today. •

It was first discovered when it was found floating on the Baltic Sea. This in itself gave the amber a ‘magical’ aspect despite the very real healing quality it offers.

The ancients wore natural Baltic amber necklaces and bracelets, made from amber stones and chips that washed up on the shores of the Baltic Sea, that were thought to have magical curative powers.

Amber stores static electricity, named elektron by the ancient Greeks. Elektron evolved into the English term "electricity."

Amber is the lightest weight & softest of all gems (a diamond is the hardest).

When the plagues devastated Europe during the middle ages, amber was used for fumigation.

The Prussian Priest Matthaus Praetorius recorded that in 1680, "During the plague not a single amber man from Gdansk, Klaipeda, Konigsberg or Liepaja died of the disease"

The people of Europe have used the curative properties of amber in many ways. Recognizing its properties as an antibiotic, they have used, and continue to use it, for amber baby teethers, baby teething necklaces, spoons and pipe mouthpieces.

Aristocrats of the 17th Century brewed tea in special amber containers.

European scientists and military doctors lead the way in following up on the ancient knowledge. They found that it would help improve the body’s immune system after exposure to radiation from industrial accidents.

Research at the University of Hamburg, Germany confirms the safe and positive effects of succinic and fumaric acids in cellular metabolism.

It is approved for use by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

health notes

• • • • •

NO chewing required JUST skin contact SAFE 100% organic NATURAL ANALGESIC

Will the acid burn my babies’ skin or clothing?

The succinic acid is not an acid in the sense of bleach or other types of corrosive acids and therefore does not bleach or damage clothing

How does the RI work?

The RI is ‘released’ from the beads in a form of oil when it is warmed against the skin. This oil is so miniscular that you would not be able to see or feel it and therefore does not mark or stain clothing and or skin • As the RI is released by warmth, it is sometimes suggested that the beads be placed in the sun to enhance this release • The RI is absorbed into the body and most effective in the glands where it is worn – hence the teething necklace will work best worn around the neck. But success has also been achieved when the child pulls too much and the necklace is then placed around the wrist or ankle.

Is Baltic Amber only used for teething?

Baltic Amber is not only for teething. It is an effective natural analgesic and thus works on pain which in turn reduces fever and will automatically result in a calmer baby as the irritation or pain and fever is removed. As teething is associated with pain and fever, the beads are generally promoted for teething, but in reality help for a whole host of things including a boosted immune system and an improvement in the skin.

Can the necklace get wet?

Yes is can and may be worn both while swimming and bathing. However, some moms prefer not to leave the necklace on – and it is always advisable that adult supervision be present with necklace use – as with all items that children play with, use or wear.

Each necklace: • • • •

Is approximately 30 – 32 cm Is threaded on silk Individually knotted beads A twist clasp for babies’ protections (doesn’t easily break, but will ‘pop’ open when under pressure to prevent strangulation)

These necklaces are also available in an adult size.

Part 2 Mom's Financial Notes

BUILDING YOUR FAMILY'S FINANCIAL FUTURE By Tony Page for Liberty Life Nelspruit

Imagine, if you will, what happens when you purchase an empty piece of ground with the idea of building your dream home, a haven for you and your family over the next stage of your life. Your children are possibly young and there may even be more little ones in your family’s future, your home will be a place where things will change over the years as the life of your family moves forward. You find a reputable architect and the first thing he or she does is to arrange a site meeting with you in order for him to get a feel for the topography of the land and a very basic idea of your requirements, such as the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, single story, double story, how many garages etc. and of course what price range you are able to spend. He then heads for his studio and drawing board to see how he can fit these requirements onto the property to best utilise the space, always making room for additions and renovations in the future. You would probably have a wish list that may include non-necessities like a swimming pool, pubs, braai areas and the like and you would be asked to prioritize these in order of importance to you. He then tries different ideas with costs and layouts that would suit your budget. You would expect nothing else from the professional that he is but that your home be well built, robust and if budgets are pretty tight to take care of the basic minimums; after all what good is a house 22

with a fancy pool, but no kitchen or bathrooms for that matter? He works from the foundations up checking that your needs and budgets are taken into account along the way. Similarly with Financial Planning. A professional Financial Adviser needs to ascertain what your financial goals are, where you are at present along the road to achieving those goals, always working within the boundaries of your priorities and budget. He or she needs to take into account the status of your family, number of children and their life stages and as with our friend the architect, he needs to ensure that your plan is based on sound and secure foundations, thereby ensuring that your financial plan will work for you well into the future.

FUTURE UNKNOWN It has been said many times that life carries no guarantees except that we will all eventually pass away but unfortunately none of us know the day nor the time of this one certain event, it could be next week, next month or many years into the future, the fact is we just don’t know. One thing I am certain about is that we all want the very best for our families, we want to give our kids a happy home life, the best education we can provide, preparing them for their adult years when they too will start families of their own. We want our spouses to be loved and cared for and yes, spoiled beyond their wildest dreams and finally a long retirement filled with golden sunsets, warmth and the sharing of beautiful memories.

Building Solid Foundations WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ... The above certainly holds true whilst we are alive, but why would we change any of those wants for our families if we were to die sooner than expected? Too many times I have seen people with elaborate and expensive financial plans for retirement and they all crumble to dust when the bread winner or substantial income provider gets called before his or her time and this is a certainty if the financial plan is not built on a sound foundation. TRUST AN EXPERT A professional Financial Adviser has to plan for the events that we cannot plan on if we truly wish our families to live their dreams. Life and Disability cover are the foundations of a solid Financial Plan and without them we would be building a Plan on clay. In the current day and age that we live in, it is usual for a family to have two bread winners. Husband and wife contribute to the financial income of the family and should either one die or become disabled the financial future of the family would be changed drastically. For this reason the traditional practice of only insuring the life of the husband is no longer acceptable when one considers that the object of Life or Disability cover is to provide sufficient capital that when invested will replace the person’s monthly income. A plan built on this foundation will ensure that the family’s dreams will not crumble due to the loss of one of the partners and from here we can proceed into the future to add retirement planning, investments and all the other ‘luxuries’ of a comprehensive Financial Plan, always staying within your budget parameters.

As a responsible Mum, I urge you to look at your Financial contribution to your family and consider the impact on them should this contribution be no longer available.

2. SOEK SONLIG Was jy al buite vandag?

4. KAMERDEUR Troetelnaampies is nie genoeg nie.

The Independent Woman's Guide To Buying A Car Consider the following before starting the big search for a new car.

Know What The Car Is Worth

Ladies, let’s be honest, we sometimes expect too much from other people. Everyone has to earn a living and if you let yourself pay too much for a car because you did not do your research, then consider it the salesperson’s good fortune and your lesson learned. Before you buy a car, it is absolutely your responsibility to read everything you can about it. Know what you should be paying for a new car, as well as a used one. Don’t assume you know exactly what you want and limit your research because that will be obvious to the salesperson when you are on a car lot and he, or she, takes you to see a different car (older/newer model, or different car altogether). Also, have a top three in mind for cars you are interested in and find out everything you can about all three. You really never know what you will end up buying until you test drive a few.

Happy Shopping!

home work

Once you arm yourself with facts and a little confidence, you will be excited about buying a car, instead of dreading the process. Knowing what you want and what you are willing to pay is a good start. Letting on that you have done your homework and are not clueless is a great way to show that you are in charge of this sale and not the other way around. Remember also that you can walk away at any time should you feel uncomfortable. But do not expect that the salesperson that approaches you will be pushy and demeaning, because you may find him or her to be very pleasant and helpful. The salespeople at Alan Hudson are waiting to help you!

Finally, enjoy your purchase!

Buying a new car is a rewarding, satisfying milestone, whether it is your first or you’ve lost count. Don’t forget that whoever said the car industry is a man’s world is more than a little behind on his facts.

Alan Hudson Motors in Nelspruit can help you make the right choice when it comes to buying a new or used vehicle.

Take Your Time And Ask Around Family and friends are your greatest source of information when it comes to product and experience satisfaction. During the research stage, talking is the second best weapon, next to reading. Use the clichéd generalization that all women love to talk to your advantage and find out what people’s car-buying experiences have been.

Has your cousin always owned the same brand of car, even though he has had a few different models? Find out why, because that car company must be doing something right to be getting repeat business from him. Did your best friend walk off a car lot after a terrible experience with a salesperson? Ask her for details about her experience and whether she has been there more than once, either prior to her bad experience or after. Alternatively, simply visit Alan Hudson Motors in Nelspruit for friendly and honest advice. Article written by Stephanie Bonotto. Adapted from www.driversense.com

SAVE WATER Whether you're in an older home or a brand-new one, you can still save water. Most of these suggestions cost little or nothing, and don't require a major lifestyle shift -- just a little change in your normal routine.

IN THE GARDEN • More plants die from over-watering than from under-watering. Be sure only to water plants when necessary. •

Use a grease pencil to mark the water level of your pool at the skimmer. Check the mark 24 hours later. Your pool should lose no more than 10mm each day.

Use sprinklers that throw big drops of water close to the ground. Smaller drops of water and mist often evaporate before they hit the ground.

Water lawns during the early morning when temperatures and wind speed are the lowest. This reduces evaporation and waste.

• Place an empty tuna can on your lawn to catch and measure the water output of your sprinklers. •

Hand-water with a hose where possible. Homeowners who water with a handheld hose can use one-third less water outdoors than those who use automatic sprinklers.

• Buy a rain gauge to track how much rain or irrigation your garden receives. • Fill your pool a few centimeters lower than usual. • Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. Mulch also helps control weeds that compete with landscape plants for water. • Clean your driveway or sidewalk with a broom, not a hose.

26

• Harvest rain water for use on your landscape. • Choose drought-tolerant plants when landscaping, and group plants with similar water needs together (hydro zoning). • Divide your watering cycle into shorter periods to reduce runoff and allow for better absorption every time you water. • Position sprinklers so they're not watering driveways and walkways. •

Adjust your lawnmower to cut grass to a height of 5 cm or more. Taller grass encourages deeper roots and shades the soil to reduce moisture loss.

• Don't install or use fountains or other water ornaments unless they use recycled water. • Use a timer on hose-end sprinklers to avoid over-watering. •

Only water your lawn when needed. You can tell this by simply walking across your lawn. If you leave footprints, it's time to water.

• If you own a pool, use a cover to reduce evaporation. • While fertilizers promote plant growth, they also increase water consumption. Apply the minimum amount of fertilizer needed. •

Aerate your lawn. Punch holes in your lawn about 10cm apart so water will reach the roots rather than run off the surface.

IN THE HOME • Replace older toilets with low-flow models to save up to 50%. • Install water-saving showerheads. • For your next washing machine purchase choose one with a water- saver option. • Cook food in as little water as possible. This will also retain more of the nutrients. •

Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded or set the water level for the size of load you are using.

• Fix toilet leaks. Plumbing leaks as a whole account for 14 percent of water consumed in the home

home work

• Install water-saving aerators on household taps. • Chill drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the faucet until the water is cold. • Make sure you know where your master water shut-off valve is located. This could save litres of water and damage to your home if a pipe were to burst.

WATER IS PRECIOUS

• Fix leaky taps. A steady tap drip can waste 15 litres of water a day. • Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.

Don't let it run down the drain!

• Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or use the defrost setting on your microwave. •

Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet.

• Place a bucket in the shower to catch excess water for use on plants. • Wash vegetables and fruits in a bowl or basin using a vegetable brush; don't let the water run. •

Scrape food from your plates instead of rinsing. Newer dishwashers and detergents get dishes just as clean without the need to pre-rinse.

• Take a 5 minute shower. • Turn the water off while you shampoo and condition your hair and you can save some water. • Check your water meter and bill to track your water usage.

EVERYWHERE ELSE • Support projects that will lead to an increased use of grey waste water for irrigation and other uses. •

Get involved in water management issues.Voice your questions and concerns at public meetings conducted by your local government or water management organisations.

• Encourage your employer to promote water conservation in the workplace. •

Use a commercial car wash that recycles water. If you wash your own car, park on the grass and use a hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle.

Report water waste from malfunctioning irrigation systems or abuse of water to the Inkomati CMA or Water affiars.

JagaBurns recently completed a project for Houghton Nursery School. The schools' aftercare area has a beautiful tree creating a lot of shade, but making it difficult for grass to grow and creating a lot of dust. The trees roots are also pushing above ground making it very uneven. The school was on a budget and needed a solution.

BEFORE

We opted to built a deck around the tree, this will allow the tree to continue growing without damaging the surface to which the turf is applied to. We had to remove the existing fence to make repairs to it before replacing it securely. The remaining area was leveled and prepared for the turf to be installed.

DURING

As Duraturf approved landscapers, we can help find a solution for your area. Contact us for a obligation free quote.
