SUGAR

SACRIFICE Some tips to help beat the sugar cravings: BASIC OVERVIEW OF DIA BETES: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a condition caused by a problem in the way your body produces or responds to insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas necessar y to transpor t blood sugar (glucose) derived from carbohydratecontaining foods (starchy food, fruit, sugar & milk products) into the muscles in order to provide them with energy. It therefore keeps the sugar in your blood within an acceptable range. We get two different types of diabetes namely Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 DM is most of ten diagnosed in children and young people but is not limited to these age groups. In this type, the pancreas produces ver y lit tle or no insulin at all which results in high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) because glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into the cells. It is most likely caused by a disorder where the body at tacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, but researchers are not sure of the exact cause for this. When you have Type 2 DM, the pancreas makes insulin, but the different cells in your body do not respond to insulin as they should, which also results in the glucose not get ting into the cells to give them energy. When this happens, the glucose also builds up in the blood and causes hyperglycemia. This type of diabetes is normally diagnosed in people who are over weight and mostly develops over a longer period of time. People with a family histor y of DM, an unhealthy diet, low level of physical activity and excess fat around their waists have a higher risk of developing this condition. 4

Symptoms of Diabetes include: • Fatigue • Hunger • Frequent urination • Increased thirst • Skin infections or sores that heal slowly • Blurred vision • Tingling feeling in your feet • Involuntar y weight-loss W HAT IS TR EATM EN T FOR DIA BETES? The treatment of diabetes includes medication, physical activity and healthy eating. The diet recommended for people with diabetes is not a special diet. It is the way all of us should eat – low in fat, sugar and salt, with plenty of fruit, vegetables, salads and high-f iber starchy foods. The great news is that Type 2 Diabetes is preventable and by making choices towards a healthier lifestyle from childhood will reduce the risk for developing Diabetes! HOW DO I ENSUR E THAT M Y CHILDR EN A R E CONSUMING LESS SUGA R AN D FAT? Nature intended for us to enjoy sugar, and in fact it is what children’s bodies run on. But really it is the sugar that naturally occurs in fruit and some vegetables that their body needs, not the ref ined, processed stuff that they crave in sweets, cookies and sugar y drinks. Without ref ined sugar in your child’s life, fruit will begin to taste sweeter and you may be surprised to f ind it goes a long way to satisfy their sweet tooth in the same way a sweets and chocolates once might have. Even by making small changes in the amount of sugar and fat added to beverages, meals and snacks you can reduce your children’s intake to healthier levels. TRY THESE PR ACTICAL TIPS: • Star t with a healthy balanced diet. Offer your child three healthy meals and two healthy snacks to ensure stable blood sugar levels, this is the f irst step in beating their sugar cravings. • Encourage them to have water or sof t drinks and cordial with no sugar instead of sugar y drinks. Tr y diluting fruit juice with sparkling water or soda water.

• Remember drinking water remains the best! • Cut down on sugar used in tea and coffee or use ar tif icial sweeteners, xenical is a more natural sweetener. • Choose tinned fruit in natural juice or fresh fruit instead of tinned fruit with syrup. • Make fruit salads with low sugar yoghur t as a desser t instead of high sugar desser ts. • Make home made custard and half the sugar content of the custard. • Make ice lollies from low sugar fruit cordial, you can add small pieces of fruit to the lollies. Children love these in the hot summer months. • Make healthy fruit smoothies with a variety of colour ful fruit and mix with yoghur t and crushed ice. • Tr y halving the sugar used in recipes or replace sugar with dried fruit. This will work easily in most recipes. • Give raisins, dried mangoes, dried apple rings or any dried fruit as a snack • Tr y using low fat spreads on bread instead of jam, honey and syrup. • Replace ice-cream, chocolates, biscuits, cakes & sweets by offering them healthier snacks. • Teach them to choose wholegrain and high f ibre food more of ten • Read the Label: Sugar has found its way so deeply into our lives that it’s now in many places you wouldn’t suspect. Peanut but ter and tomato sauce are some of the more obvious even purpor tedly healthy items like soymilk , whole grain bread, pasta sauce and natural cereals contain sugar. You may have the best intentions possible. You may diligently avoid all the usual culprits: soda, cookies, sweets, cakes and ice creams. And yet you child still might be getting unknowingly dosed with sugar. If you want to beat sugar and sugar cravings you have to be alert, always read the label!! Aim for products containing less than 10g of sugar per 100g and choose more natural and fresh products. Ar ticle Writ ten by: Elsabé Lourens Tel: 084 522 8403 Employed by Natalie Grobler

MALARIA

Since it's Malaria Awareness Week in Southern Africa in November, we've collected some important notes on the topic.

What is malaria?

Malaria is a vector-borne disease caused by single celled parasites, the Plasmodium protozoa, and transmit ted by female Anopheles mosquitoes. A vector is something that carries a disease from one living thing to another. In malaria’s case, the vector is the female Anopheles mosquito. Malaria can also be transmit ted from mother to fetus or by blood to blood contact from sharing needles or blood transfusions. About six ty species of the Anopheles mosquito are major transmit ter s of the disease.

REMEMBER THE “ABC” OF MALARIA PREVENTION Awareness: Be aware of the risk Bite prevention: Avoid being bit ten by mosquitoes, take the necessar y precautions. See ar ticle on page 7. Chemoprophylaxis: Use prophylaxis to protect your self against malaria. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Diagnosis: insist on diagnostic tests if fever develops a week or more af ter exposure to malaria. Effective malaria treatments: Are available and it is impor tant to get the appropriate treatment specif ic to your circumstances.

Malaria symptoms may only develop 10 -14 days af ter an infective mosquito bite. If a per son has taken chemoprophylaxis, this period might be even longer. Non-specif ic f lu-like symptoms are common presenting symptoms of malaria. Some of these include: fever, rigor s, headache, sweating, fatigue, myalgia (back and limbs), abdominal pain, diarrhoea, appetite loss, nausea and vomiting, cough. In young children, malaria may present with fever, lethargy, poor feeding and vomiting. You should seek immediate medical at tention if you have f lu-like symptoms for up to six months af ter visiting a malaria area. Infor mation retr ieved and adapted from w w w.malar ia .org.za

SUMMER FIRST AID Summer’s here, and it’s time to put up your defences. Know the first-aid moves that will keep your family safe. Whether you’re at the beach, in the bush, or just in the back yard, be sure your family knows what they’re getting into. Check out some common summer threats, and make sure you know what to do if one of your family members were to need immediate care. Mopani Pharmacy has also compiled a free, comprehensive 'Holiday Checklist' for a safer, healthier holiday; available in-store.

BEE STINGS Gently push out the stinger using a blunt-edged object such as a credit card or the dull side of a knife. Don’t pluck it out with your f inger s because you may squeeze venom back into the skin. Clean the wound with soap and water, apply ice, then dab on Stingose, available at Mopani Pharmacy. If your child is wheezing or having trouble breathing, this could signal an allergic reaction; get to an emergency room immediately. Prevention: Don’t cater to the bee’s sweet tooth: At a picnic, serve lemonade or soda in sports bottles and sippy cups. And avoid using heavily perfumed soaps or shampoos.

TICK BITES
Lightly grip the tick with tweezer s, close to the skin, then pull it off. Clean the area and apply an antiseptic ointment. Jaco Venter, Mopani Pharmacist suggests Polysporin Ointment. If within three to 30 days the bite mark expands or turns into a bull’s-eye-shaped rash larger than three inches in diameter, it could be a sign of Tick Fever. Fever, achiness, and headache may follow. With any of these symptoms, consult a doctor. But you’ll have to wait until six weeks af ter the bite for testing, the antibodies won’t react until then. Prevention: The easiest may to prevent tick bite fever is to avoid being bitten by ticks. Avoiding rural or wilderness areas where ticks are likely to occur is one way to achieve this, but not a great solution if you enjoy hiking and camping. Other measures are generally common-sense, such as wearing insect repellents and long trousers and sleeves. Mopani Pharmacy recommends Bayticol clothing & sock Spray.

HEALTH

Malaria Prevention: Stay in well-screened rooms. Sleep under bed nets and wear clothes treated with insecticide (e.g. permethrin). Always wear insect repellent. (Products available at Mopani Pharmacy include Insect Repellent Patches, Mosquito Armbands and Mosquito Guard Natural Aerosol.) Wear long pants and longsleeved shirts to reduce the amount of exposed skin. Avoid the outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Remember to talk to your Mopani pharmacist about the option of anti-malaria medication.

SWIMMER’S EAR
If your child’s ear is red and itchy - and the pain gets wor se when you tug on it - he probably has swimmer’s ear, which may be caused by a bacteria or fungus. Mopani Pharmacy recommends Swimmer s' Ear Drops. Also, keep him away from the water for a few days - or at least have him swim with his head above water. If the pain doesn’t let up within 24 hour s, see a doctor.
Prevention: Before the kids go swimming, pick up some Swim Seal Earplugs (a type that molds to the ear) to block out water - available at Mopani Pharmacy. Or try the homemade version: a piece of cotton dipped in petroleum jelly. If your kids are prone to swimmer’s ear, limit diving and underwater swimming.

JELLYFISH STINGS
As you scrape away the jelly f ish tentacles -- a credit card will do the trick -- rinse the area with salt water. (In fresh water, the tiny tentacles can expand and actually sting your child all over again.) Ask a lifeguard for vinegar, which neutralizes the venom. For instant pain relief, Mopani Pharmacy also recommends Stingose. Prevention: Ask a lifeguard about the water conditions before swimming in the ocean. Retr ieved and adapted from w w w.goodhousekeeping.com

MALARIA Malaria is an infection caused by a parasite that is passed to humans through a mosquito bite. Malaria can be fatal and aff licts roughly 50 0 million people each year. Be over-protective when visiting high-risk areas. If your child is scratching a mosquito bite, apply something warm to the swollen red spot. (A mug of hot water wrapped in a dishtowel will do.)

It will be years before you can break out the board games, but that doesn’t mean you and your baby can’t begin the family game night tradition! Playing games is hugely beneficial and essential to a baby’s development. Baby games provide opportunities for bonding, learning new skills and developing a sense of humor. They get your baby stretching his muscles, using his senses and working out problems. These classic baby games can be replayed over and over, and they can take as much or as little time as you want. When your baby becomes distracted, try to re-engage him once or twice, but let him decide when it’s time to stop. Babies need breaks to process all they are learning.

3-6 Months Peek-a-Boo!

The game peek-a-boo is a timeless baby favorite. Why do babies love peek-a-boo? “Peek-a-boo engages and entertains babies while teaching them about the world,” says Linda Platas, Ph.D., an early childhood researcher at the Institute of Human Development at UC Berkeley. “Your baby learns to predict a regular pattern—that you’ll come back!”

6-9 Months

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

At this stage, babies are fascinated by the world around them. Some babies can sit up, which frees up their hands to explore. “This age is perfect for starting finger plays to develop baby’s fine motor skills,” says Dr. Platas. “Your child will be fascinated by your singing and movements—and soon learn to imitate them.” Do the fingerplays with Itsy Bitsy Spider and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and see if your baby imitates you.

9-12 Months

Monkey See, Monkey Do

“From about nine to twelve months, babies begin to purposefully imitate and replicate sounds, increasingly using repeated syllables in their babbling,” says Dr. Platas. “These can (happily!) include ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ as well as nonsense words such as ‘bababa’ and ‘nanana.’” Call out sounds like la-la-la or ba-ba-ba. Encourage your baby to repeat the sounds. If she makes the sounds, echo her. This will get her ready for saying real words.

TOP 10 CHILD & BABY TRAVEL TIPS

BUSY BODIES

Going away with your children for the first time? These top tips from experienced parents will help you prepare for the journey...

1

Wet wipes, drinks, snacks and a change of clothing are essential. Sit in an easily accessible seat on the train, boat or plane, if possible.

2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Ensure your hand luggage is kept to a minimum to keep your hands free, and where possible, consider sacrificing your own things for what your child might need. On planes, changing cabin pressure during take-off and landing can be uncomfortable. You can ease the discomfort by breast-feeding babies or giving toddlers a dummy and older children a sweet to suck on. Ration distractions such as books and crayons throughout the journey, producing a new treat when boredom beckons. Put a favourite toy in your hand luggage. Silent toys will be appreciated by other passengers. On car journeys, music and nursery rhyme CDs work well. Attach a luggage label to your child’s clothing with their flight number and name on it. Stick to your normal meal and nap routine as much as possible, even if this means sacrificing activities. You’ll pay a price at bedtime otherwise. Make long journeys, particularly by car, coincide with nap times.

Self-catering accommodation is more flexible and can include laundry facilities, so is often a popular choice for families. It means you can relax while your children are asleep within earshot.

10

With very young children, pack a baby carrier or back/hip carrier for toddlers instead of a pushchair so that your hands are kept free. Article retrieved and adapted from www.which.co.uk/baby-and-child.
