The Best In Maternity Matters The thought of getting through your first pregnancy (or even second, third or more...) is still a daunting notion that haunts so many mothers-to-be. Sometimes all the advice and support from doctors, family and friends is just not enough to get you over that lonely stumbling block. It is then that you realise so many before you have done this and mother nature will take care of you. There will always be someone who worries more than you, who's mountain is higher to climb and who finds pregnancy even more unnerving than you. There is comfort and an incredible strength in that. It is the call of mother nature, saying "you can do this". The reward at the end will give you the satisfaction of that stumbling block, guaranteed. Looking back you'll find your innate nature often is the deciding factor in your success stories. However when you run into those unsettling considerations, Mediclinic Nelspruit has all the experience, with a network of doctors on-hand 24-hours and no need to travel when emergency and intensive care is needed. The smallest premature baby delivered at 680g at birth was possible due to the state-of-the-art obstetric, maternity, neonatal, paediatric, high and Intensive care units. 2

Maak tyd vir
PRET!
As jou kinders oud genoeg is, laat hul ook beurte neem. Sien bladsy 41.

The importance of family bonding “Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.”
Family bonding time is time the family spends together meaningfully. Work, school, extracurricular activities; these daily activities that make our lives so busy create difficulties for parents to foster a bond with their children.
4. When planning a family vacation you can ask your children where they want to go and what they want to see or do. By incorporating them in the planning process you make them feel like an integral part of the family.
It is important to strengthen family relationships by spending time with one another, listening to each other and respecting each other’s opinions. Below are ten easy things a parent can do to form stronger bonds with their children.
5. Many children have extracurricular activities like sports or dance. By involving yourself in these activities and praising them on their participation you are helping to build their confidence as well as strengthening your bond.
1. Try and eat dinner together with no distractions, such as television or phones. Eating a family meal together not only promotes better eating habits, but also gives family members time to discuss their day and any good or challenging things happening in their life. 2. A great way of having fun while bonding with your family is to create a “Family Night” where the entire family participates in an activity. This can be as easy as a board game night, and eating outside in the garden etc. 3. Helping a child with their homework not only allows you to spend time together, but enables you to see what they are learning and how they are doing academically.Your support and praise will go a long way in boosting their confidence in school. 10
Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
6. Many parents know that reading to your child daily increases their literacy, but it also allows for a time when both parent and child are completely focused on one another and can communicate freely about the book or other subjects. 7. Teaching your children the importance of volunteerism and giving back by volunteering for a local charity or organization can show them the importance of what they have and make them a more socially conscience person. 8. Getting involved in your children’s hobbies, whether it is collecting cards, art or horseback riding, shows your support of their chosen activity and allows them to feel they can express themselves in any way.
9. By encouraging your children to be active and exercising together you foster healthier habits for both you and your child while you both communicate about the activities you are doing. 10. Childhood, especially the adolescent years, is incredibly hard on the self esteem of many children. By telling a child you love them and giving compliments or positive feedback frequently, you can foster their confidence and perception of themselves. By listening and being supportive of their ideas, even if you don’t agree, makes them feel as if they can come to you with their problems and discuss their true feelings. There is nothing better than having a place you can call home, where you feel loved, appreciated and safe. As a parent, having a strong bond with your children creates a feeling of unity and safety. It is important to do all you can to create these family bonds to ensure a happier and healthier family. Following any of the above activities can help assist you and your family in creating a strong life long bond and help foster better parenting skills for you. Having family is very comforting and being with family is like coming home! CORA BREYTENBACH Educational Psychologist 0828102409 corabreytenbach@yahoo.com

Easy practical guide for reading food labels:
There are a few things you need to look out for on labels when shopping: Nutritional Information table This shows you how much of each nutrient is in the food. Look at the numbers /100g of the product to compare similar foods. Use the table below to decide if the food is high or low in fat, saturated fat, sugar and sodium (salt). Foods in the ‘low’ group can be eaten more often, but foods in the ‘high’ group should be eaten seldom or only on special occasions.
The first few ingredients listed on the ingredients list make up the largest part of the food. Therefore, rather avoid or eat less of a food if the following words are listed in the first few ingredients: • Fat, oil, lard, butter, cream, shortening, Trans fat (or partially hydrogenated fats). • Salt or any word with ‘sodium’. • Sugar, which can also be labelled as sucrose, glucose, maltose, dextrose, cane sugar, corn syrup, fructose. 15

Therapeutic horseback riding is the use of horses and equine-assisted activities in order to achieve goals that enhance physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioural and educational skills for people who have disabilities. Not only does the exercise focus on riding skills but also the development of a solid relationship between the horse and its rider. It differs slightly from conventional riding as it incorporates teamwork in its approach to providing treatment for individuals, under the guidance of an instructor. The stimulation provided through the act of riding is quite unique as it stimulates the neuromuscular system as the rider executes various movements on the back of the animal. Horses move in a rhythmic motion that mimics the human movement of walking as, while riding, the horse's stride acts to move the person's pelvis in the same rotation and sideto-side movement that occurs when walking. Unlike humans, however, horses have various adjustable gaits which promote strength, balance, coordination, flexibility and confidence in the rider. Horses can act as an aid by giving
those with disabilities a companion to care for. Grooming such as brushing, bathing and currying, aid range of joint motion and have a relaxing and calming effect. These animals have been utilised as a therapeutic aid since the ancient Greeks used them for people who had incurable illnesses. "One does not have to ride to achieve the desired effects of therapy," explained Kraai Kamffer-du Preez, veteran rider, instructor and owner of Nottinghill Equestrian Centre. "Just the simple act of caring for it is in itself very therapeutic. We see that every time the children of Dasha School come here f or lessons." The amount of benefit gained through therapeutic riding differs from person to person and is based on many factors such as the type of disability or the severity of it, motivation of the rider and the established connection between the horse and the person. "Unlike exercise machines that focus only on one muscle group at a time and do not use natural body movements, riding forces a person to make use of the entire body to control the horse while at the same

time maintaining balance. Because these animals require not only physical skill but also cognitive skill for achievement, riding reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the rider." Proven physical benefits include improved balance and muscle strength, improved coordination, faster reflexes, increased muscular control, improved posture, decreased spasticity, increased range of motion in joints, stretching of tight or spastic muscles, increased endurance and improved cardiovascular function. There have also been documented cases of major advancements in both the major and minor motor skills. Besides the physical benefits, horse riding also has a positive effect on self-confidence, self-esteem, development of patience, improved risk-taking abilities and stress reduction.

“To dance is to be out of yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful...” – Agnes De Mille. It is this heartening sentiment that has placed Rythm Image Dance Studio securely onto Nelspruit’s social radar. Under the guidance of nationally acclaimed teacher and examiner, Tanya Edwards, this studio has become a cornerstone of the local arts and culture scene. They have produced 11 Rising Star South African champions and boast 22 full South African championship winners in just the last decade. Furthermore she has successfully coached teams into victory at the South African A-Division and mini-team competitions including bringing home an international team championship. Tanya Edwards is a qualified examiner with 29 experience in both the professional and amateur arenas which adds credentials to her love and passion for the performing arts. It’s not all about the show Dance is a fantastic way to keep your children fit and supple. It improves confidence and co – ordination and studies have shown that even ADD or ADHD children have benefitted greatly from dance. Dancing focuses their attention, improves their mind-body connection and trains them to become more aware of their own selves. Parents will agree their little munchkins love dancing – and that they will pretty much show off their moves anywhere. Teaching them how to thoroughly appreciate and enjoy that instinctive behaviour will bring both mom and little one fulfilment. 26
At Rythm Image Dance Studio we teach all ages from four years to 104 years and pay careful attention to every individual. An added benefit is that the little ones will now have a conduit to get rid of all that excess energy – and mommy will have an early night’s rest. A dance is a dance is a dance? Well not exactly. We split our dance styles into various categories namely Solo Energy, Bhangra, Slow Style, Hip Hop, Solo Latin (which covers all Latin styles danced without a partner) and Solo Classic (which covers Contemporary, Jazz, Ballet and Spanish). Rythm Image Dance Studio is affiliated to Solo Dança Latina by Mark Dooley. Although we teach 26 different styles of dance we focus on 14 styles for children. For mommies, we have Latino-Cise dance classes which is a fantastic way to get back into shape or stay fit. We like to keep classes fun and whether you or your child wishes to dance competitively or socially we have an awesome syllabus that allows for both. Take that first step Give Tanya a call and enrol your little dancing princess for the 2014 classes which are available in both Nelspruit and White River. Little Cooks Club At School Programme is a derivative of the original Little Cooks Club programme, and is endorsed by occupational therapists. It creates an opportunity for parents that work full time to expose their children to the Little Cooks Club principles through their extra-mural activities at school. Children learn to cook in teams, which is a great way for them to make friends and build their confidence. There's no pressure involved in our cooking lessons, the emphasis is on having fun while discovering a few basic kitchen techniques and the fundamentals of cooking.
Register your child for the At School Programme by completing an enrolment and indemnity form, which is obtainable at your child's school or at your local Little Cooks Club Franchise.
For our full range of our cooking programmes please contact: Lee Henwood Cell: 082 455 0731 Email: leeh@littlecooksclub.co.za
Open classes are held once a term, giving the children an opportunity to showcase the skills they have learnt. Parents are encouraged to attend the open classes as the children will be presented with a certificate.
Little Cooks Club started as a programme to introduce children between the ages of 2 and 15 years to the basic principles of cooking and nutrition. The main aim of this is to encourage an awareness of healthy eating by having fun while learning an important life skill. Most parents, with busy schedules, don't have the time to cook with their children at home and are even more discouraged when facing the mess that follows. Little Cooks Club allows parents the opportunity to get back-to-basics with their child, spending an hour a week having fun and being creative in the kitchen.

WHAT IS "DANCE MOUSE? DANCE MOUSE is a comprehensive, dance related syllabus currently being introduced in most Pre-Primary and Primary Schools in South Africa through a franchise opportunity. Our curriculum gives young children the opportunity to be introduced to approximately six different dance forms per year. The syllabus teaches children the following techniques: Hip Hop, Breakdance, Latin American Basics, Freestyle, Rock and Roll, Gymnastic Basics , Silk Fabric training, Body Conditioning, Pilates techniques, Ballet and Modern basics. The aim envelops the technical training of a child’s body in order to safely strengthen, stretch and mobilize the body through exercise and dance. The rewards to the child being coordination and dance balanced skills. Once strength is accomplished, any form of dance or any other physically challenging activity is easy to attain. 38
Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
THE BENEFITS OF DANCE MOUSE ARE SIMPLY
ENOR'MOUSE! teaching children technique and rhythm, and increasing their overall self-confidence. offering each child access to a broad dance base from which they can then choose going forward. dancers are exposed to proprioception skills and various other activities that enhance their sensory, vestibular (balance) and gross motor skills at a steady and controlled pace. offers a solid foundation of dance, body and spatial awareness. Dancer becomes very aware of their own body, its limitations and strengths. at the same time enhancing a child’s performance in any other physically demanding sport. a great emotional release and cardio workout for both boys and girls offering them an overall sense of well being.
Dancers achieve all of the above while dancing to the latest music and most importantly having loads of FUN! The primary aim of DANCE MOUSE is to encourage children to enjoy dance expression and to increase their passion and love of dance. Should children only want to dance for fun (whether talented or not) or to do exams and competitions they have the freedom to choose. DANCE MOUSE uses an array of equipment: Hedgehogs, wobble boards, silk, scarves, hula hoops, cheerleader shakers, ribbon sticks etc. Techniques are presented in such a way as to make it fun. We are opposed to any form of stress or pressure being placed on children in order to achieve results.
For more information please contact Maryke du Toit Cell: 082 818 0913 nelspruit@dancemouse.co.za www.dancemouse.co.za

Lees is méér as ‘n fees! Haar stories is groot in aanvraag, by kinders, ouers, skole en terapeute.
Plaas jou bestelling vandag! MAKE LEARNING FUN &
EASY!
With January well and truly over and you and your family settling into the school run routine, reality is setting in. A new school year brings great new possibilities and opportunities, but also new worries, for both you and your children. Not only is there fretting over school fees and peer pressure, but like so many other families the matter of whether or not your child will pass to the next grade weighs heavily on your mind… As a mom, you want the best for your children (especially an excellent education) - but what do you do when little Mpho just can’t seem to grasp that “c” stands for “k”? Or when Stefan comes home with another 33% on his Maths test? How will they ever get past those hurdles?
Who are we?
No need to worry - the solution is easy and just a phone call or a mouse click away! Kip McGrath Education Centres has proved its worth through twenty years of experience (and success), after originating in Australia. The programme has been adapted to comply with the South African Education system and our centres are staffed with experienced, qualified teachers. At our Nelspruit centre, we understand the challenges of 30+ classrooms, continuous curriculum changes and children who just can’t seem to grasp certain concepts and therefore, have succumbed to low selfesteem and just about given up. 42
Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
What do we do?
The Kip McGrath system is a “back to basics” approach which starts out with a FREE assessment to ascertain each individual child’s learning obstacles. We also take into consideration things such as children’s learning disabilities, emotional upsets, whether the child has moved schools or if they have been ill. At Kip McGrath, we not only care about education, we care – full stop.
How does it work?
A remedial programme is designed for each individual child, whether in Mathematics, Reading, English or Afrikaans. Each child attends a weekly lesson of 80 minutes which runs on a rotation system between computers, reading and written tasks, making it much easier for children who struggle to concentrate. With each completed task, the child has a sense of accomplishment, and so their confidence grows. Also, reinforcement of class work is done with homework through audio CD’s or short written activities. The classes are small (six learners to one teacher), which makes it easier to identify and resolve individual mistakes and hurdles. Each child also has time set apart with the teacher where specific learning obstacles are tackled. The simple approach is that each child is
placed on a level that he or she can cope with, and our supportive teachers lead them through the graded programme to more complex work, until they reach the correct level. Each child is encouraged to work at their own pace, which aids in re-building their self-esteem and confidence in their own abilities. Our classes are presented in both English and Afrikaans medium to make your child feel as comfortable and at home as possible.
A decade of excellence
Kip McGrath Education Centre Nelspruit is now in its tenth year of operation and as we continue to grow and evolve, so does our passion for what we do. We have established relationships with many of the schools in our locality, and our system is one of a combined effort between us, you as parents and your child’s school. We all work together to improve not only your child’s marks, but also his or her confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
A new era
The Kip approach is an established system that really works, but continuous evolution is also part and parcel of success. Our computer programmes have undergone a facelift, which makes it much easier for the children to navigate and understand.
We are introducing a new Afrikaans programme this year, which has a broader and more modern approach that is guaranteed to make both teachers and learners excited! Also, our new maths enrichment programme, Maths Expert, stimulates children who already excel to reach even higher standards.
Learning excellence
Here at Kip Nelspruit, our learners are our pride and joy – and we love to boast with their achievements (www.facebook.com/ KipMcgrathEducationCentreNelspruit).
Learning is fun!
At Kip Nelspruit, we make teaching and learning fun. Not only are our books colourful, our computer programs encouraging and our teachers friendly, we also know that an ice-cream puts a smile on a child’s face and a cup of hot chocolate warms up a tummy in the winter months! Of course, when Aunty Nicci (our centre director) celebrates her birthday – its cake for everyone! What a way to end a lesson! At Kip, we know that education is no laughing matter – but we are sure to put a smile on your child’s (and your) face again!

Advice from a dear friend recently went something along the lines of: "colour your hair man, your grey is starting to show". Shock. Horror. Dismay. Denial. Then reality took over, holding hands with reason and followed by their kids content, nous and fortunate. Being male in your early 40's, Caucasian and within reasonable health, you hardly give any thought to the perception around going grey. According to the life vs colour spectrum, grey is perceived to be the colour of 'balance’, 'belonging', 'conservative', 'neutral', 'reliable' and 'secure' to which you inherently want to compare your own personality. Fact: 1. The amount of melanin in your hair follicle determining the colour strength of your hair and with a shortage of melanin your hair will become grey of colour. 2. Vitamin B-12 is one of the vital components of healthy hair and a shortage there of could also result in reduction of colour, hence going grey. 3. Grey is genetic. It is in your DNA. Stress is a major health factor, attacking the human body and if not neutralised, could increase the ageing process, hence the reference to “going grey because of stress”. However, it is a natural thing, as you get older everybody will at some stage have a grey hair or two. Some ethnic groups tend to go grey in their 30's, other in their 40's but by the age of 50 at least 60% of the population has grey hair, whether you show it or not. Nearly 40% of all females colour their hair and at least 15% of men (willing to admit it) also try to hide the grey bits. I look over to my grade eight daughter, grooming herself in front of the mirror (for the last hour) and I think that if she'd spent half the time on her homework and use that dedication to beauty, on learning her maths, we would have.....less grey hair!
The thought of boyfriends waiting outside at my gate, my little spring chicken's hormones spiralling out of control on a scale of highs and lows only psychiatrists would understand, the 'miss know-it-all' attitude and the agonizing thought of letting her go to the 'gees vang' (all by herself), gives me....grey hair! Acknowledgement: I am now part of the 'Grey Movement'. I'm sexy and I know it. We have been brainwashed to think that ladies going grey are aged, has-been, over-the-wall, ‘on the wrong side of 40’, where men feel in control of their lives, satisfied and wiser or more experienced. Off course it is all hogwash. Although it has its advantages. Grey is not black nor white. It is a perfect background for other colours. Grey is a quiet colour, but the backbone, the supporter and the enhancer. The number of men taking care of their physical appearance is growing (no longer seen as vain or feminine) and even history has shown that grey hair is a sign of greater hardiness and increased power. Think about the Colonial European men wearing grey (or white) wigs to enhance their patriarchal appearance. We tend to live longer. There are more women, at higher levels of authority with added power and influence in the workplace, than ever before. We can't let a grey hair stand in our way. We embrace the feeling of conquering and we make a proactive style-statement about being grey. People want to have grey in their lives. We affectionately refer to it as 'salt & pepper'. No wonder the book ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ is so popular, it is all about being grey? Join the Grey Movement - colour your hair - grey! (I have yet to find a hairdresser that stocks a shade of grey hair colour - and the look on their faces when asked to colour your hair grey is well......priceless.) Now, to get my daughter away from the mirror and in front of her books.

Love & financial
harmony
The way we earn, spend and save money is a practical expression of our most fundamental beliefs. When our priorities are out of sync, money can become the great divide in an otherwise harmonious relationship. By working together toward financial freedom, money can cease being a source of conflict and become a way to express our highest values, while providing comfort and security to those we love most. Around Valentine’s Day, with romance in the air, what couple could imagine that they would ever fight about money? Finance is as fundamental to married life as the birds and the bees.
How to manage money together In our lives, we are pulled in many directions. We both fear and desire the power of money. Many of us have problems harnessing the positive power of money through regular saving and investing. But that doesn’t have to hold you back. Here are 10 things you and your partner can do to foster good money management habits and get your savings on track: 1.Decide together what you want: Many people live from day to day. Unfortunately, they also spend from day to day and build no financial nest egg. To make progress in saving for the future, approach the future one step at a time. 2.Build your future together.: Take serious steps toward providing for your own financial future, beginning right now to create goals based on your current income and financial situation. 3.Make a financial commitment to each other and your marriage: Many people tell themselves that they will begin to save when their income rises, but few ever do. Unless you put yourself first, when you make more, your expenses will inevitably rise to meet your income and nothing will be left for you. 4.Learn about finances together: Most people learn little at school or at home about money, investment and personal finance. Begin by learning about your personal income and expenses. 5.Start right now: Work together to develop financial knowledge and confidence, and soon you will find yourself gliding painlessly into the world of finance, and you will be ready to take control.

Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
6.Explore your money issues together: Carefully examine your early teachings about money to see if you can find clues that are sabotaging you financially. As you work to build a financial future together, it is important that each of you understand your deep rooted attitudes toward money, and the attitudes of your partner. 7.Balance the money power in your relationship: Discuss together the roles that each of you will play in earning, managing and spending money. Don’t shy away from discussing the power and freedom that money brings. 8.Take action – one step at a time Some people have no interest in dealing with their personal finances. They know little about money, and find the subject uninteresting and boring. To deal with money matters, when you haven’t the time or the interest, break your financial tasks into manageable portions. 9.Understand the risks and rewards: Assess your personal risk tolerance and follow your intuitions. By learning about investment risk and reward, you can invest wisely for your financial future. 10.Accept your imperfections and those of your partner. Some people want to pin down every detail before making any decision about money. Emphasize action: begin saving now!
The bottom line, make a joint appointment with a financial planner, for a personal financial plan and peace of mind.

A community - so loved! To feel part of a community is an important way for children to feel secure and valued. Why not make this year the year of doing more in, and for, your community? It is a wonderful opportunity to spend time together as a family too! Here are some ideas on how to become, or feel, more connected to your community. 1. Join in the fun. Every community has unique ways (or occasions) it celebrates. Jump in and contribute to the celebration. Consider becoming more involved with the school fair, church fete or even a fundraiser for a worthy local charity. 2. Say hello to your neighbours. It’s easy to live completely isolated lives, even in a close-proximity security complex. Knowing who your neighbours are isn’t just healthy for your family’s sense of community, but for your safety too. Read more about Naybers Community Initiative on page 60. 3. Stop complaining. It’s difficult to cultivate a sense of community in your children if you are constantly focusing on the noisy lawnmower next door, or the inconvenience of doing a shift at the school sport day. 4. Stay active. Family fun-runs, sport events in your town and even sport events held by your school is a great way to connect to your (and your child’s) community. 54

Try something new on a regular basis. Break the routine. Go to different restaurants. Travel different roads. Attend a new festival. Hang out with a different crowd. You may find a group of people that share your family’s interests in the most surprising places! 7. Try a new hobby. Every town has an array of sport and special interest clubs. Joining a local club is a wonderful way to connect to other like-minded families. See our list of local clubs:

If the exchange rate is anything to go by South Africans in general are in for a gruelling ride in the first quarter of 2014. Property owners in recent years have been through the worst and best times as the cycle continues to go through its phases. We are now in a 'spring cleaning' period and re-evaluating your investments is paramount. Whether you own property or considering buying your first home in this economy, the word 'save' should be your number one goal in 2014, (according to Ronel de Beer from Ronel de Beer Property Brokers). First Decision When it comes to interest rate negotiations you will have an edge if you have a larger deposit to start your house buying journey with.Your first priority, after the decision to buy a property, especially for first time buyers, starts by saving for a bigger deposit. It is the utmost important tick on your todo-list even if it takes you a bit longer to get to signing on the dotted line. Bond Every little bit of extra income pumped in to your bond will have a positive effect on your interest rate in the long run. After your transaction has been clinched and you have adjusted your 56

income to comfortably afford the bond, the 'saving'-skill acquired in the beginning of your journey should be continued through to the paying off of your bond. It is amazing to realise how many years just a couple of hundred rand extra on a regular basis, could reduce the settlement period. Interest Rates & Insurance Policy The same applies to interest rates. Every little extra helps you achieve your dream of owning that new property in a shorter term than originally expected. It all starts with learning and sticking to the term 'saving'. Do not see the regular interest rate negotiations with your bank as a huge mountain to climb. Soon you'll get the hang of it and dividends will pay off at the end. Always keep the amount covered for in case of an emergency, updated, especially when making improvements. As much as you would like to get 'top dollar' for your property when you are selling, you would like to be paid out to the maximum when disaster strikes. Understand that saving on your insurance premium is like losing on your investment in case of an unforeseen expense.
Maintenance Always keep your property in tip top shape. It is true that a small errand repaired could save you loads if attended to promptly. Not only will it save you on long term maintenance cost but come day of sale you'll see the return on investment. One of the benefits derived from a weaker Rand is the interest shown by international investors in property stock in South Africa. If we could keep the risk to a minimum and continue saving, the future of our property market is surely looking bright. Leaders and Trendsetters in the Property Industry Are you ready to buy? Buying a new home is such an exciting experience, but it can be timeconsuming and expensive as well. We understand that your time and money matter to you, and so it matters to us. When you choose Ronel de Beer and her team to help you find a home, rest assured we will navigate you efficiently through the maze of real estate information to help you find the home that best suits your needs. In addition, we use our knowledge and experience to negotiate the best possible price. Using an Agent to help you find a home costs you nothing. It will not only streamline the process, but also expose you to information you would otherwise not have access to. It will provide you with invaluable expertise and experience to help you make a more informed decision, and protect your interests in the transaction.

Become a
Handy Mandy
this year It’s back to work for 2014, and we know that many of you moms will be spending the day at home without your hubbies to give you that manly helping hand. Whether you’re a stay-at-home-mom or a busy businesswoman, why not clue yourself up on household maintenance this year with some tips from superwoman Lasea Swift and her team at Swift Group? It’s bound to save you money and drop more than a few masculine jaws. Lasea has identified a few areas around the house where minimal effort is required to keep everything in tip-top shape. We start at your gate: the entrance to your property and the first port of call for inquisitive visitors to your home. Swift Group recommends that electric gate tracks be cleaned out regularly to prevent the gate motor from working too hard and possibly burning out. Decrease wear and tear on the gate and motor by removing grime and dirt build-up. “It is also vital to choose the correct size motor for your gate size. When the motor is too small, it won’t be able to handle the strain put on it and will burn out quickly and expensively,” says Lasea. Roof leaks and gutters: To keep the precious roof over your head in top form, investigate it regularly for damage and keep it clean. Innocent looking leaves and other vegetation can quickly wash into your gutters, causing obstructions and excess water build-up. “Excess water can eventually seep through walls, causing indoor leaks and damaging structural integrity,” Lasea explains.
Tiles: A simple tap of your tiles can reveal whether they have been installed correctly. “If the tile gives a hollow sound when you tap on it, there’s something wrong,” Lasea warns. Incorrect tiling installation is almost guaranteed to cause cracks in the tile and very costly future expenses. Missing grout between the tiles is also an alarm signal, causing water build up and spreading damage to all tiles in the area. So tap on your tiles and tap your tiling installer on the back if you notice anything untoward. Wooden doors and frames Doors need regular maintenance and are more complicated than they might seem at first. Unless you really can't spend the money to let the pros do it, don't fix one yourself. They have to seal properly, need to be balanced so they don't swing open and smash holes in your wall or rip the hinges off, and they need to be painted and sized properly. Maintenance can prevent a cracked door frame, which is impossible to fix and needs replacement, at huge expense.
So, ladies, make a resolution in 2014 to dig out your old clothes, roll up your sleeves and become Handy Mandys.

Key members of the community needed People around the world live behind high walls and fences and have, more than likely, never met their immediate neighbours, not to mention the families that are living in their street. According to Huntley Fyvie, CEO of the Naybers Group, they are cutting themselves off from one of their biggest support groups. For the past six years, Fyvie has made it his goal to get neighbours connected through an SMS service called ‘SMS Naybers’. “Communication is the vital ingredient in getting communities organised and safe” says Fyvie, who has identified key areas missing in the usual communication structures amongst communities. According to Fyvie, there are many sms based type systems available, but what makes SMS Naybers unique is its two way communication and its multiple level groupings, with the fact that the system is purely built with the community in mind. Now with its new Community Reporting Application (COMuniCOM), it’s a must for all.

COMMuni-COM activates when you send a message to the system. SMS Naybers will send you a sms with a link to the report, with your details to complete. Making your report formal will give the security companies and the community at large all the information. An effective reporting system will give South Africans the reality of crime and service delivery issues.
How to join and costs: Joining is free and will always be. Go to www.naybers.info or www.smsnaybers.co.za. Simply complete the online form to join. The only cost involved is R7.50 when you send a sms to create your COMMuni COM report. ‘’The SMS Naybers service has been developed to add a critical dimension to community safety in their fight against crime, and that is one of awareness and support before, during and after an event. It is, however, not just limited to safety issues’’, continues Fyvie, ‘’we have had great stories of communities coming together for social events, lost and found situations, fixing potholes, and even assisting a neighbour in need during a medical emergency”. SMS Naybers is used to share, exchange, interact, communicate and organise your community and the first step starts with someone coming forward to become a key member of the community or a Naybers Community Anchor.

We are so excited to tell you all about The Veranda, our brand new decorating studio and shop of all things fabulous! Our doors opened in early September last year in an old White River landmark namely “Die Stoep” shed on the way to Casterbridge. Many hours of scrubbing, remodeling and painting finally resulted in an airy lofty space encompassing a studio workspace and consulting area, all surrounded by beautiful interior items for sale that showcase our diverse offerings. With years of experience under our belts we thought it was high time to become more accessable. Both being lovers of all things bespoke and crafty, we felt that there was a huge gap in the market for individually made items.
This has been achieved through having an in house upholstery factory that can tackle anything from crazy one offs to recovering your existing linen sofa that the dog ate. A full range of fabrics from well known fabric houses are kept in our showroom as well as flooring and curtaining. A full menu of paint effects is also available, from walls to furniture and floors.Your old ball and claw suite or outdated hand-me-downs can be totally transformed into something fabulous, whether it be gilded, distressed or antiqued. Walls can be aged, papered or enhanced with a mural. We are your go-to girls, whether it be for a furniture re-arrange in your home for a fresh look or decorating your home from the floors up. We look forward to you popping in or alternatively contact us for a get together! Hope to see you very soon.
