YOUR CHILD’S TEETH
AWARENESS ARTICLES SEPTEMBER ORAL HEALTH AWARENESS September is Oral Health Month, and Dr. Zoli Grimbeek discusses some basics around "haasbekkies", big teeth and oral health.
Losing their milk teeth marks an important part of growing up for any child. Adult teeth need to last a lifetime so this is the time to keep an eye on tooth development and any potential problems that may occur. Between the ages of 6-13 is a busy time in your child’s mouth as their 20 milk teeth are lost and replaced by 28 adult teeth. A further four molars will erupt –known as the wisdom teeth – in their late teens. Spot early problems with regular dental check-ups. Many children don’t visit the dentist until they need to have treatment or they are in pain. A routine check-up every 6 months from an early age will help your child get used to the surroundings of the surgery and enable your dentist to monitor the development of their permanent teeth and spot any potential problems.
Here is a checklist for healthy teeth:

YOUR CHILD'S VISION & WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Sight is not just about how well a child can see, it is how all the components of the visual system work together in a structured manner to ensure clear comfortable vision. Although the importance of an annual visual system analysis for your child cannot be underestimated, there are many aspects of your child's eyes you as a parent can monitor. SQUINT (STRABISMUS) This is a condition where one eye tends to be deviated from the intended line of sight. This condition can indicate the presence of an unusually high prescription or in some cases quite serious pathology. All children I\LMFMXMRK WSQI JSVQ SJ WUYMRX QYWX FI carefully assessed and the appropriate form of treatment must be undertaken sooner rather than later. SHORT SIGHTEDNESS (MYOPIA) Myopic children can comfortably see anything that is relatively close, however they will tend to struggle in the classroom as they cannot see the board clearly or read presentations on Powerpoint or overhead projectors. ASTIGMATISM (IRREGULAR CORNEAL CURVATURE) Children, who have astigmatism, will tend to battle both with distance and near vision. They may struggle with poor slanted handwriting, or abnormal head posture, all to reduce the effect of the astigmatism.
PATHOLOGIES: Always be well aware as to what the normal appearance of a healthy eye is. Anything that deviates from the norm like red eyes, itchy eyes, burning eyes, headaches, keeping one eye closed, unequal pupil sizes and any form of discharge be it watery, mucous or purulent must all be investigated immediately. In most cases there is no need for alarm, and the sooner treatment is initiated, the better the prognosis will be. NUTRITION 0EGXSWI MRXSPIVERGI MW JVIUYIRXP] GSRJYWIH with milk allergy, but the two conditions are not the same. LACTOSE INTOLERANCE: Lactose intolerance happens when the body cannot digest and absorb lactose. Lactose is the sugar found in milk and milk products and is often called 'milk sugar'. The inability to digest lactose is due to a lack of or reduced production of lactase enzyme in the digestive system. Lactase enzyme breaks down the lactose (milk sugar), into two smaller sugars to be absorbed in the bloodstream. Lactose has several applications in the food industry; it is used in sweets, confectionery, bread and sausages. LACTOSE INTOLERANCE SYMPTOMS: %FHSQMREP TEMR FPSEXMRK ¾EXYPIRGI HMEVVLSIE ZSQMXMRK REYWIE ERH [IMKLX PSWW Symptoms vary from person to person. They may start within 15 minutes after consumption or only after a few hours. The severity of symptoms varies depending on the amount of lactose a child can tolerate. Some of the symptoms may be confused with those of milk allergy but, milk allergies can cause the body to react quicker, often within a few minutes. MILK ALLERGY: Milk allergy is caused when the immune system reacts against one or more of the proteins found in milk. Every time milk is ingested the immune system is falsely alerted that a harmful substance has entered the body and tries to eliminate it as if it were bacteria, a virus or a harmful chemical. The immune system releases toxins, which make a child experience the symptoms associated with milk allergy. There are many protein allergens in cow's milk that cause allergic reactions. Casein and whey are the two main components. Milk allergy and lactose intolerance have very similar symptoms. ]

TREATMENT FOR MILK ALLERGIES: The only 100% successful treatment for milk allergies is total avoidance of milk proteins. Milk substitutes include soya milk and rice milk which can be used. Dietary changes: For children, lactose intolerance is usually treated by avoiding or limiting milk or products containing milk or milk sugar. Dairy products have varying levels of lactose, which affects how much lactase is required for proper digestion. Milk, ice cream, and yoghurt contain WMKRM½GERX EQSYRXW SJ PEGXSWI EPXLSYKL JSV GSQTPI\ reasons yoghurt may not trigger symptoms in some lactose-intolerant people. A small amount of yoghurt and buttermilk are worth trying. They are both low in lactose and also low in fat and calories. Cheeses have less lactose than milk, especially the naturally aged cheeses. Lactose free cheeses are also available. Parmalat’s EasyGest is a low fat, lactose free milk that has been formulated for people with lactose intolerance. With EasyGest, people who are lactose intolerant can still enjoy real milk without experiencing any unpleasant symptoms.

A South African MRC report shows that childhood obesity has negative health implications with approximately 60% of overweight 5-10-year-old children presenting with at least one associated cardiovascular risk factor and 25% presenting with two or more risk factors. For example, a tremendous increase in type 2 diabetes in children and teenagers has been documented. Excess weight can put strain on the heart as it tries to pump blood through the body at an increased rate, burdening the heart, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Obesity also lends itself to other major risk factors such as stroke, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels and diabetes. Parents can play an important role in preventing and treating obesity in their children. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that parent intervention in getting children to lose excess weight had greater results than when children worked alone with a dietician.

HELEN MANGANE
According to her mother—Anna—Helen has always had health issues, from birth. She was always tired and pale in colour and it got to a point, when she was 12 years old, that she could not see a full day through without being completely exhausted. Anna, a domestic worker, worried that Helen's condition was getting worse and eventually took her to Pretoria Academic Hospital, where Helen was diagnosed as having an Arterial Septal Defect and needed surgery as soon as possible. Because Helen's father passed away, coming up with the money to pay for the surgery was a huge challenge for her mother. But help was at hand thanks to the WSPCF, which paid for her surgery to be performed at the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in 2008. Since her surgery, Helen has fully recovered, but still needs to visit the hospital every few years to replace the battery in the pacemaker that was installed on her heart. BUSY BODIES INTRODUCING YOUR CHILD TO 8/;E<@AE&3AFAEG & MENTAL AND PHYSIC AL PREPARATION Don't assume that BMX skills are enough for mountain biking. It's different. The bikes and the riding position are different, and picking your way down a rough steep rock face is ver y different than "taking a run" at the dirt bumps RI\X HSSV % OMH [LS W KSSH EX &1< [MPP SJXIR be over-confident, and that can be dangerous.
THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT:
Let the child be part of the decision process. They're more likely to enjoy the bike if they helped to pick it out. At Cycle Lab Nelspruit we will tell you and your child which bike suits the child best by listening to their wishes and needs and of course your budget.
SIZE THE BIKE CORRECTLY:
Choose the biggest wheels he can handle on a frame that fits his size . Most 20-inch-wheeled bikes are not good and the small wheels make life difficult off-road.
GET SOLID QUALITY: If you can afford it, choose a top-of-the-line range. Quick-release skewers, trigger shifters, light frame . On kids' bikes, grip shifters are the usual, but they're hard for kids to twist while tr ying to stay on a bumpy trail. If your budget is limited, consider a good frame with cheaper components. Upgrade the components later.
GETTING STARTED:
Get ready for that first ride carefully. Spend some time riding on the lawn. A nearby park with rolling grass hills is perfect for getting used to that "off-road" feel. Go to the church parking lot and set up a steering course using cones, so he can practise tight turns. When he's ready, tr y rolling down a spot on the sidewalk where there are 2-3 steps. Riding as a family in nature is another way of spending good quality time together and developing the skills and fitness level of your child(ren).

TIPS WHEN FLYING WITH CHILDREN:
BUSY BODIES
CHECK IN When possible , check in and secure your seat assignment online before you leave for the airport. AIRPORT SECURITY WITH KIDS Ensure that you have not packed any toy guns or toys with sharp objects as these will be confiscated by airpor t security. FLIGHT DELAYS WITH KIDS Even though you’re frustrated, tr y not to let your kids know it. They’ll pick up on your mood. Resist the temptation to keep your kids (temporarily) quiet with juice or sugar y treats, it will only make them harder to manage later. High protein snacks (especially ones that take a while to eat) are a great choice though. TAKEOFF To reduce the pressure in their ears during take off and landing, for older children, gum is a good aid but for babies, a bottle or dummy will work. IN FLIGHT You need to make your travel toys last, so tr y not to bring them out until your child asks for them or gets bored. LANDING After landing, it is easiest to wait until the other passengers have disembarked before gathering your belongings and children.

TUIN PRET REGTE STOKVIS ... Benodighede:
Stokkies, blare , borrel ogie , gom geweer, kar ton, sker. Hierdie is 'n eenvoudige , goedkoop aktiwiteit!

SWIMMING POOLS
Swimming pools must be properly fenced off and have a childproof lock on the gate. The gate must never be left open. To protect a child fully, add a professionally installed pool safety net to cover your pool. Even then, know where your child is. Is the neighbour's pool adequately fenced? And the gate always closed? Remember to empty paddling pools when not in use

SECURITY LIGHTING TIPS
SS
1. Ensure that the entrance to your property and the areas around the house are lit at night. The lights do not have to be bright, just enough to ensure visibility. 2. Install bright motion sensor lighting in vulnerable places. If you have external beams arrange for the lighting to be linked so that if the beams are broken, these lights will go on. 3. Consider motion lighting: a) On the border of your property overlooking the street or adjacent vacant land/park, especially if the street lighting is inadequate. b) At the bottom or in dark corners of your garden.
